What is the utility of measuring gaseous HgII dry deposition using Aerohead samplers?: A review

The most efficient way to quantify HgII inputs to ecosystems is to measure wet and dry deposition. Wet deposition of HgII is determined by measuring Hg concentrations and the volume of precipitation. Dry deposition of HgII is determined through direct measurement and/or determined indirectly by measuring air concentrations and using model-generated deposition velocities. Here, data collected using an Aerohead sampler holding cation exchange membranes are summarized, and the utility of this method for understanding dry deposition, and other measurements and processes is discussed. This analysis includes information from publications, and recent data collected at Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Texas, USA, and Amsterdam Island, Southern Indian Ocean. This method primarily measures gaseous HgII and little particulate-bound Hg. The Aerohead method is useful for looking at large-scale trends in deposition, verifying Hg depletion events, calculating dry deposition velocities for compounds with specific chemistry, and identification of sources of HgII. At numerous locations in the western USA, deposition rates were greater at higher elevations due to elevated concentrations associated with long-range transport of atmospheric pollution. When used in tandem with the Reactive Mercury Active System or a dual-channel system, more accurate deposition velocities - that vary as a function of GOM compound chemistry - can be calculated.

A decadal synthesis of atmospheric emissions, ambient air quality, and deposition in the oil sands region

This review is part of a series synthesizing peer-reviewed literature from the past decade on environmental monitoring in the oil sands region (OSR) of northeastern Alberta. It focuses on atmospheric emissions, air quality, and deposition in and downwind of the OSR. Most published monitoring and research activities were concentrated in the surface-mineable region in the Athabasca OSR. Substantial progress has been made in understanding oil sands (OS)-related emission sources using multiple approaches: airborne measurements, satellite measurements, source emission testing, deterministic modeling, and source apportionment modeling. These approaches generally yield consistent results, indicating OS-related sources are regional contributors to nearly all air pollutants. Most pollutants exhibit enhanced air concentrations within ~20 km of surface-mining activities, with some enhanced >100 km downwind. Some pollutants (e.g., sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides) undergo transformations as they are transported through the atmosphere. Deposition rates of OS-related substances primarily emitted as fugitive dust are enhanced within ~30 km of surface-mining activities, whereas gaseous and fine particulate emissions have a more diffuse deposition enhancement pattern extending hundreds of kilometers downwind. In general, air quality guidelines are not exceeded, although these single-pollutant thresholds are not comprehensive indicators of air quality. Odor events have occurred in communities near OS industrial activities, although it can be difficult to attribute events to specific pollutants or sources. Nitrogen, sulfur, polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs), and base cations from OS sources occur in the environment, but explicit and deleterious responses of organisms to these pollutants are not as apparent across all study environments; details of biological monitoring are discussed further in other papers in this special series. However, modeling of critical load exceedances suggests that, at continued emission levels, ecological change may occur in future. Direct Measurement of Mercury Deposition at Rural and Suburban Sites in Washington State, USA

Because of mercury’s (Hg) capacity for long-range transport in the atmosphere, and its tendency to bioaccumulate in aquatic biota, there is a critical need to measure spatial and temporal patterns of Hg atmospheric deposition. Dry deposition of Hg is commonly calculated as the product of a measured atmospheric concentration and an assumed deposition velocity. An alternative is to directly assess Hg deposition via accumulation on surrogate surfaces. Using a direct measurement approach, this study quantified Hg deposition at a rural site (Pullman) and suburban site (Puyallup) in Washington State using simple, low-cost equipment. Dry deposition was measured using an aerodynamic “wet sampler” consisting of a Teflon plate, 35 cm in diameter, holding a thin layer (2.5 mm) of recirculating acidic aqueous receiving solution. In addition, wet Hg deposition was measured using a borosilicate glass funnel with a 20-cm-diameter opening and a 1 L Teflon sampling bottle. Hg deposition was estimated based on changes in total Hg in the aqueous phase of the samplers. Dry Hg deposition was 2.4 ± 1.4 ng/m2·h (average plus/minus standard deviation; n = 4) in Pullman and 1.3 ± 0.3 ng/m2·h (n = 6) in Puyallup. Wet Hg deposition was 7.0 ± 4.8 ng/m2·h (n = 4) in Pullman and 1.1 ± 0.2 ng/m2·h (n = 3) in Puyallup. Relatively high rates of Hg deposition in Pullman were attributed to regional agricultural activities that enhance mercury re-emission and deposition including agricultural harvesting and field burning. Hg concentration in precipitation negatively correlated with precipitation depth, indicating that Hg was scavenged from the atmosphere during the beginning of storm events. Because of their relative simplicity and robustness, direct measurement approaches such as those described in this study are useful in assessing Hg deposition, and for comparing results to less direct estimates and model estimates of Hg deposition.

An updated review of atmospheric mercury

The atmosphere is a key component of the biogeochemical cycle of mercury, acting as a reservoir, transport mechanism, and facilitator of chemical reactions. The chemical and physical behavior of atmospheric mercury determines how, when, and where emitted mercury pollution impacts ecosystems. In this review, we provide current information about what is known and what remains uncertain regarding mercury in the atmosphere. We discuss new ambient, laboratory, and theoretical information about the chemistry of mercury in various atmospheric media. We review what is known about mercury in and on solid- and liquid-phase aerosols. We present recent findings related to wet and dry deposition and spatial and temporal trends in atmospheric mercury concentrations. We also review atmospheric measurement methods that are in wide use and those that are currently under development.
