Environmental significance of lubricant oil: A systematic study of photooxidation and its consequences

Lubricant (lube) oil discharge from ships has been widely considered as normal "operational consumption", but is now deemed to be oil pollution. Despite the chronic contamination of the marine environment by lube oil, the number of studies related to its environmental impact, characteristics, and toxicity is limited. This study is the first attempt to investigate the environmental fate of lube oil subjected to photooxidation using in situ mesocosms. A tiered approach using thin-layer chromatography-flame ionization detection (TLC-FID), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) demonstrated compositional changes in lube oil and the water-soluble fraction (WSF). Total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (ΣPAHs) in lube oil after 96 h of photooxidation were measured at 79.8 and 41 μg/g in the control (Con) and exposure (Exp) groups, respectively. Meanwhile, the ΣPAHs concentration in WSF after 96 h was very low, at 0.25 and 0.45 μg/L in Con and Exp, respectively. FTIR and GC-MS helped identify bond changes and photoproducts in WSF. A wide range of photoproducts, including carboxylic acids, esters, anhydrides, aldehydes and ketones, were identified in WSF. Toxic effects of WSF in both the Con and Exp groups obtained after 96 h of photooxidation were evaluated on olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) embryos. Morphological defects, especially tail fin fold defects, were found to be significantly elevated in both the Con and Exp groups, with marginally higher frequency in Exp. The results of this study demonstrate the need for further research on lube oil weathering, including monitoring over prolonged periods of time.

Occurrence and distribution of selected antibiotics in the surface waters and ecological risk assessment based on the theory of natural disaster

With increasing population growth and resource depletion, ecological health is a hotspot and urgent topic. Our study investigated the occurrence and distribution of five antibiotics, i.e., metronidazole (MET), sulfamethoxazole (SMZ), ciprofloxacin (CFX), norfloxacin (NFX), and enrofloxacin (EFX), in the surface water from Erlong Lake, China. With the seasonal and spatial variations of antibiotics, this study developed an interdisciplinary approach for the ecological risk of antibiotics considering the natural, human, and socioeconomic elements of watershed based on the risk theory of natural disaster. This approach integrates the geographic information system (GIS) spatial analysis tool, natural disaster theory, "driving force"-"pressure"-"state"-"impact"-"response" (DPSIR) model, and ordered weighted averaging (OWA) operators in terms of various environmental factors, representing a new ecological risk paradigm for environmental managers or decision-makers to identify environmental change. A total of 69 samples were collected in wet, dry, and normal seasons from 2017 to 2018, and laboratory analyses revealed that four antibiotics (MET, SMZ, CFX, and NFX) were widely detected in the lake. The mean concentrations decreased in the order of MET (1041.7 ng L^-1) > SMZ (771.4 ng L^-1) > CFX (646.4 ng L^-1) > NFX (179.0 ng L^-1) > EFX (15.3 ng L^-1), with their levels in natural surface waters higher than those in other studies. Antibiotic concentrations were higher in dry seasons than in other seasons, and the concentrations were strongly correlated with EC (electrical conductivity), pH, DOC (dissolved organic carbon), and TP (total phosphorus) according to redundancy analysis (RDA). Significant seasonal variations were found in CFX and EFX (ANOVA, p < 0.001). For the whole watershed, the ecological extremely and heavily vulnerable levels were concentrated in the central and northwest regions of the watershed, i.e., Changling county and Lishu county. Hence, the ecological distributions of extreme risk and heavy risk posed by the five selected antibiotics were assessed by using the mixture hazard quotient methods and DPSIR model which were also located in these counties in different seasons. The antibiotic results of ecosystem risk assessment can support decision-makers in identifying and prioritizing the necessary taking of specific measures and different risk attitudes to preserve the quality of ecological health for a city or multiple counties.

The occurrence, composition and partitioning of phthalate esters (PAEs) in the water-suspended particulate matter (SPM) system of Lake Chaohu, China

The occurrence, composition, and partitioning of six phthalate esters (PAEs) (dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP) and di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP)) in the water-suspended particulate matter (SPM) system of Lake Chaohu were investigated in this study. Our results showed that PAEs were ubiquitous contaminants in Lake Chaohu. The concentration of the Σ₆ PAEs in dissolved and particulate phases ranged from 0.370 to 13.2 μg·L^-1 and from 14.4 to 7129 μg·L^-1, respectively. The Σ₆ PAEs in water and SPM phases exhibited different seasonal trends. PAEs with different degrees of hydrophobicity demonstrated different temporal distributions in the dissolved phase. In particulate phase, all PAEs exhibited the same temporal distribution. Regarding the occurrence of PAEs, significant spatial differences exist between lake and estuary. However, there were no specific differences in PAEs across lake zones and river types of Lake Chaohu. River input should be considered an important source of PAEs in Lake Chaohu. DIBP and DBP were the most abundant PAEs in Lake Chaohu, and DIBP should attract more attention in the future. The organic carbon normalized partitioning coefficient (logKoc) ranged from an average of 2.38 ± 0.86 L·g^-1 for BBP to 3.98 ± 0.66 L·g^-1 for DEHP, and approximately 2 to 3 unit variations of logKoc existed for the individual PAEs. It was difficult to ascertain whether the partitioning of PAEs was in, near or far from the equilibrium. No linear relationship was found between logKoc and the octanol-water partitioning coefficient (logKow) for PAEs. Koc might not be suitable for describing the partitioning of PAEs in the water-SPM system. The hydrophobicity of PAEs may have little impact on their partitioning in the complex environmental system, and the Kow model may be inappropriate to predict the partitioning of PAEs in natural large lakes.
