The Release of Antimony from Mine Dump Soils in the Presence and Absence of Forest Litter

Managing antimony pollution: Insights into Soil-Plant system dynamics and remediation Strategies

Researchers are increasingly concerned about antimony (Sb) in ecosystems and the environment. Sb primarily enters the environment through anthropogenic (urbanization, industries, coal mining, cars, and biosolid wastes) and geological (natural and chemical weathering of parent material, leaching, and wet deposition) processes. Sb is a hazardous metal that can potentially harm human health. However, no comprehensive information is available on its sources, how it behaves in soil, and its bioaccumulation. Thus, this study reviews more than 160 peer-reviewed studies examining Sb's origins, geochemical distribution and speciation in soil, biogeochemical mechanisms regulating Sb mobilization, bioavailability, and plant phytotoxicity. In addition, Sb exposure effects plant physio-morphological and biochemical attributes were investigated. The toxicity of Sb has a pronounced impact on various aspects of plant life, including a reduction in seed germination and impeding plant growth and development, resulting from restricted essential nutrient uptake, oxidative damages, disruption of photosynthetic system, and amino acid and protein synthesis. Various widely employed methods for Sb remediation, such as organic manure and compost, coal fly ash, biochar, phytoremediation, microbial-based bioremediation, micronutrients, clay minerals, and nanoremediation, are reviewed with a critical assessment of their effectiveness, cost-efficiency, and suitability for use in agricultural soils. This review shows how plants deal with Sb stress, providing insights into lowering Sb levels in the environment and lessening risks to ecosystems and human health along the food chain. Examining different methods like bioaccumulation, bio-sorption, electrostatic attraction, and complexation actively works to reduce toxicity in contaminated agricultural soil caused by Sb. In the end, the exploration of recent advancements in genetics and molecular biology techniques are highlighted, which offers valuable insights into combating Sb toxicity. In conclusion, the findings of this comprehensive review should help develop innovative and useful strategies for minimizing Sb absorption and contamination and thus successfully managing Sb-polluted soil and plants to reduce environmental and public health risks.

Antimony release and volatilization from organic-rich and iron-rich submerged soils

Antimony (Sb) is an poorly understood, increasingly common pollutant, especially in soils susceptible to waterlogging. We investigated the impact of waterlogging on Sb release, methylation, and volatilization from an organic-rich wetland soil and an iron (Fe)-rich floodplain soil in a 27-day microcosm experiment. The release of Sb into the porewaters of the organic-rich soil was environmentally relevant and immediate with waterlogging (3.2 to 3.5 mg L-1), and likely associated with a complex interplay of sulfide precipitation, sorption with organic matter and manganese (Mn) (oxyhydr)oxides in the soil. The release of Sb from the Fe-rich soil was likely associated with Fe-(oxyhydr)oxide reduction and immobilized due to co-precipitation with Fe-sulfides or as Sb-sulfides. Volatile Sb was produced from the soils after waterlogging. The organic-rich soil produced more volatile Sb (409 to 835 ng kgsoil-1), but the Fe-rich soil volatilized Sb more efficiently. The negligible association of Sb volatilization with soil parameters indicates a more complex underlying, potentially microbial, mechanism and that antimony volatilization could be ubiquitous and not dependent on specific soil properties. Future works should investigate the microbial and physiochemical drivers of Sb volatilization in soils as it may be an environmentally relevant part of the biogeochemical cycle.

Influence mechanism of plant litter mediated reduction of iron and sulfur on migration of potentially toxic elements from mercury-thallium mine waste

The decomposition of plant litter in soil changes soil nutrient content and plays an important role in regulating soil pH and availability of potentially toxic elements (PTEs). However, there remains limited studies on the mechanism under which litter influences the transport of PTEs in the process of ecological restoration. This study examined the effect of plant litter decomposition mediated reduction of iron and sulfur components on migration of PTEs from mercury-thallium mine waste. The results showed that the four kinds of litter alleviated the acidity of the waste, especially the Bpa and Tre litter. The nitro and nitroso groups produced by the decomposition of the litter were adsorbed onto the waste, thereby providing an electron transfer medium for iron reducing microorganisms, such as Geobacter. This promoted the reduction and release of Fe³⁺ to Fe²⁺ and reduced the electronegativity (El) value of waste. The reduced El promoted the adsorption of metal cations such as Hg and Tl to maintain electrical neutrality. However, it was not conducive to the adsorption of oxygen containing anions of As and Sb. An increase in litter resulted in an increase in reductivity of mercury-thallium mine waste. This maintained the reduction of Fe³⁺ to Fe²⁺ and changed or destroyed the structure of silicate minerals. PTEs, such as Tl, Hg, As, and Sb, were released, resulting in reductions in their residual fraction. However, the strong reduction conditions, especially the decomposition of Bpa, caused part of the released Hg(II) combining with S^2- produced by the reduction of SO₄^2- to form insoluble HgS, thereby reducing its migration. The findings could provide a theoretical basis to guide the situ-control and ecological restoration of PTEs in waste slag site.

Evaluation of Pollution Level, Spatial Distribution, and Ecological Effects of Antimony in Soils of Mining Areas: A Review

The first global-scale assessment of Sb contamination in soil that was related to mining/smelting activities was conducted based on 91 articles that were published between 1989 and 2021. The geographical variation, the pollution level, the speciation, the influencing factors, and the environmental effects of Sb that were associated with mining/smelting-affected soils were analyzed. The high Sb values mainly occurred in developed (Poland, Italy, Spain, Portugal, New Zealand, Australia) and developing (China, Algeria, Slovakia) countries. Sb concentrations of polluted soil from mining areas that were reported in most countries significantly exceeded the maximum permissible limit that is recommended by WHO, except in Turkey and Macedonia. The soil Sb concentrations decreased in the order of Oceania (29,151 mg/kg) > North Africa (13,022 mg/kg) > Asia (1527 mg/kg) > Europe (858 mg/kg) > South America (37.4 mg/kg). The existing extraction methods for Sb speciation have been classified according to the extractant, however, further research is needed in the standardization of these extraction methods. Modern analytical and characterization technologies, e.g., X-ray absorption spectroscopy, are effective at characterizing chemical speciation. Conditional inference tree (CIT) analysis has shown that the clay content was the major factor that influenced the soil Sb concentration. Non-carcinogenic risks to the public from soil Sb pollution were within the acceptable levels in most regions. An Sb smelter site at the Endeavour Inlet in New Zealand, an abandoned open-pit Sb mine in Djebel Hamimat, Algeria, an old Sb-mining area in Tuscany, Italy, and Hillgrove mine in Australia were selected as the priority control areas. Cynodon dactylon, Boehmeria, Pteris vittata, and Amaranthus paniculatus were found to be potential Sb accumulators. All of the values of bioaccumulation factors for the crops were less than one. However, ingestion of Sb through crop consumption posed potential non-carcinogenic health risks, which should not be neglected. The soil variables (pH, Eh, total sulfur, carbon nitrogen ratio, total organic carbon, and sulfate), the total Sb and the bioavailable Sb, and heavy metal(loid)s (As, Pb, and Fe) were the major parameters affecting the microbial community compositions.

Antimony release and volatilization from rice paddy soils: Field and microcosm study

The fate of antimony (Sb) in submerged soils and the impact of common agricultural practices (e.g., manuring) on Sb release and volatilization is understudied. We investigated porewater Sb release and volatilization in the field and laboratory for three rice paddy soils. In the field study, the porewater Sb concentration (up to 107.1 μg L^-1) was associated with iron (Fe) at two sites, and with pH, Fe, manganese (Mn), and sulfate (SO₄^2-) at one site. The surface water Sb concentrations (up to 495.3 ± 113.7 μg L^-1) were up to 99 times higher than the regulatory values indicating a potential risk to aquaculture and rice agriculture. For the first time, volatile Sb was detected in rice paddy fields using a validated quantitative method (18.1 ± 5.2 to 217.9 ± 160.7 mg ha^-1 y^-1). We also investigated the influence of two common rice agriculture practices (flooding and manuring) on Sb release and volatilization in a 56-day microcosm experiment using the same soils from the field campaign. Flooding induced an immediate, but temporary, Sb release into the porewater that declined with SO₄^2-, indicating that SO₄^2- reduction may reduce porewater Sb concentrations. A secondary Sb release, corresponding to Fe reduction in the porewater, was observed in some of the microcosms. Our results suggest flooding-induced Sb release into rice paddy porewaters is temporary but relevant. Manuring the soils did not impact the porewater Sb concentration but did enhance Sb volatilization. Volatile Sb (159.6 ± 108.4 to 2237.5 ± 679.7 ng kg^-1 y^-1) was detected in most of the treatments and was correlated with the surface water Sb concentration. Our study indicates that Sb volatilization could be occurring at the soil-water interface or directly in the surface water and highlights that future works should investigate this potentially relevant mechanism.

Removal of antimonate (Sb(V)) from aqueous solutions and its immobilization in soils with a novel Fe(III)-modified montmorillonite sorbent

Over the past decades, contamination of terrestrial environments with antimony (Sb) has aroused a great deal of public concern. In this research, the efficacy of Fe(III)-modified montmorillonite (Mt) (Fe-Mt) for the removal of Sb(V) from aqueous solutions with Sb(V) concentration in the range of 0.2-1 mmol L^-1 and immobilization of Sb(V) in soils spiked with 250 mg Sb(V) kg^-1 was investigated. The immobilizing mechanisms of the modified clay were assessed by fitting the experimental sorption data with the Langmuir and Freundlich sorption models and a series of single and sequential extraction studies. The results showed that the adsorption data had a better fit with the Langmuir equation (R²: 0.99) and Fe-Mt could efficiently remove up to 95% of Sb(V) at lower concentration ranges. The concentrations of Sb(V) in exchangeable fraction of modified Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) sequential extraction and distilled water extracts of the amended soils decreased dramatically by up to 60% and 92%, respectively. Furthermore, the bioaccessibility of Sb(V) in simulated human gastric juice reduced remarkably by 52% to 60%, depending upon the soil fraction sizes. The results confirmed that Fe-Mt could be a promising candidate for the removal of Sb(V) from aqueous solutions and immobilization of Sb(V) in terrestrial environments.

Antimony contamination and its risk management in complex environmental settings: A review

Antimony (Sb) is introduced into soils, sediments, and aquatic environments from various sources such as weathering of sulfide ores, leaching of mining wastes, and anthropogenic activities. High Sb concentrations are toxic to ecosystems and potentially to public health via the accumulation in food chain. Although Sb is poisonous and carcinogenic to humans, the exact mechanisms causing toxicity still remain unclear. Most studies concerning the remediation of soils and aquatic environments contaminated with Sb have evaluated various amendments that reduce Sb bioavailability and toxicity. However, there is no comprehensive review on the biogeochemistry and transformation of Sb related to its remediation. Therefore, the present review summarizes: (1) the sources of Sb and its geochemical distribution and speciation in soils and aquatic environments, (2) the biogeochemical processes that govern Sb mobilization, bioavailability, toxicity in soils and aquatic environments, and possible threats to human and ecosystem health, and (3) the approaches used to remediate Sb-contaminated soils and water and mitigate potential environmental and health risks. Knowledge gaps and future research needs also are discussed. The review presents up-to-date knowledge about the fate of Sb in soils and aquatic environments and contributes to an important insight into the environmental hazards of Sb. The findings from the review should help to develop innovative and appropriate technologies for controlling Sb bioavailability and toxicity and sustainably managing Sb-polluted soils and water, subsequently minimizing its environmental and human health risks.

Validation and deployment of a quantitative trapping method to measure volatile antimony emissions

Microbial-mediated Sb volatilization is a poorly understood part of the Sb biogeochemical cycle. This is mostly due to a lack of laboratory and field-deployable methods that are capable of quantifying low-level emissions of Sb from diffuse sources. In this study, we validated two methods using a H₂O₂ -HNO₃ liquid chemotrap and an activated coconut shell charcoal solid-phase trap, achieving an absolute limit of detection of 4.6 ng and below 2.0 ng Sb, respectively. The activated charcoal solid-phase trapping method, the most easily operated method, was then applied to contaminated shooting range soils. Four treatments were tested: 1) flooded, 2) manure amended + flooded, 3) 70 % water holding capacity, and 4) manure amendment +70 % water holding capacity, since agricultural practices and flooding events may contribute to Sb volatilization. Volatile Sb was only produced from flooded microcosms and manure amendment greatly influenced the onset and amount of volatile Sb produced. The highest amount of volatile Sb produced, up to 62.1 ng kg^-1 d^-1, was from the flooded manure amended soil. This suggests that anaerobic microorganisms may potentially be drivers of Sb volatilization. Our results show that polluted shooting range soils are a source of volatile Sb under flooded conditions, which may lead to an increase in the mobility of Sb. Some of these volatile Sb species are toxic and genotoxic, highlighting the role of Sb volatilization on environmental health, especially for individuals living in contaminated areas exposed to wetlands or flooded conditions (e.g., rice paddy agriculture surrounding mining areas). This work paves way for research on Sb volatilization in the environment.

Total and Leached Arsenic, Mercury and Antimony in the Mining Waste Dumping Area of Abbadia San Salvatore (Mt. Amiata, Central Italy)

Total and leached Arsenic, Mercury and Antimony were determined in the topsoils developed on the mining waste dumping area of Le Lame (Mt. Amiata, central Italy) where the post-processing Hg-rich ore deposits from the mining area of Abbadia San Salvatore were stored. The concentrations of As, Hg and Sb were up to 610, 1910 and 1610 mg kg−1, respectively, while those in the leachates (carried out with CO2-saturated MilliQ water to simulate the meteoric water conditions) were up to 102, 7 and 661 μg·L−1, respectively. Most aqueous solutions were characterized by Hg content <0.1 μg·L−1. This is likely suggesting that the mine wastes (locally named “rosticci”) were possibly resulting from an efficient roasting process that favored either the removal or inertization of Hg operated by the Gould furnaces and located in the southern sector of Le Lame. The highest values of total and leachate mercury were indeed mostly found in the northern portion where the “rosticci”, derived by the less efficient and older Spirek-Cermak furnaces, was accumulated. The saturation index was positive for the great majority of leachate samples in Fe-oxy-hydroxides, e.g., ferrihydrite, hematite, magnetite, goethite, and Al-hydroxides (boehmite and gibbsite). On the other hand, As- and Hg-compounds were shown to be systematically undersaturated, whereas oversaturation in tripuhyte (FeSbO4) and romeite (Ca2Sb2O7) was evidenced. The Eh-pH diagrams for the three chalcophile elements were also constructed and computed and updated according to the recent literature data.

The influence of different antimony (Sb) compounds and ageing on bioavailability and fractionation of antimony in two dissimilar soils

Assessing the bioavailability of various Sb substances plays a crucial role in human health and the ecological risk assessment of contaminated soils. However, fate, behaviour and bioavailability of different Sb compounds in soils are insufficiently known. Therefore, in this present study, the effects of soil properties and ageing on bioavailability of four different Sb compounds (C₈H₄K₂O₁₂Sb₂, Sb₂S₃, Sb₂O₃ and Sb₂O₃ nanoparticles) were evaluated during 120 days ageing time. A black soil (BS) with approximately 12% organic matter (OM) and a red soil (RS) with less than 1% OM were amended with 1000 mg Sb kg^-1 of different Sb compounds and subjected to single extractions with distilled (DI) water, 2M HNO₃, Simplified Bioaccessibility Extraction Test (SBET) and a modified Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) sequential extraction method. The results revealed that there are substantial variations in dissolution rate of various Sb sources, depending upon soil type and Sb compound. The amounts of DI water extractability of Sb during the incubation time varied between <1% and 2%, whereas HNO₃ extractable fractions and Sb bioaccessibility at the end of ageing time ranged between about 1%-3% and <1%-9% of the total Sb, with maximum bioaccessibility observed in BS contaminated with C₈H₄K₂O₁₂Sb₂. The residual and labile fractions accounted for 77-93% and 0.1-4% of the total Sb, respectively, indicating that Sb is mostly associated with recalcitrant fractions of the soils. The results of single and sequential extraction studies revealed that source of Sb, ageing time and soil properties can greatly affect the bioavailability of Sb in soils. The findings of this research provide a deeper understanding of the potential risks associated with Sb compounds and highlights the role of site-specific considerations for improving the robustness of toxicity guidelines and long-term management of Sb contaminated sites.
