The Satisfaction with Life Scale and the Subjective Well-Being Inventory in the General Korean Population: Psychometric Properties and Normative Data

An empirical test of the chronic illness quality of life model: the prominent role of barrier to health care and social support

The Chronic Illness Quality of Life (CIQOL) model highlights satisfaction with life in individuals with a chronic illness (i.e., HIV-related diseases) determined by factors such as barriers to health care, AIDS-related discrimination, social support, physical well-being, and engagement coping. Despite the empirical evidence supporting the CIQOL model, its validation in the Iranian population has not yet been conducted. This study aimed to validate the CIQOL model among Iranian patients with HIV-related diseases. Four hundred fifty-two patients completed the study questionnaire including Barriers to Care Scale (BACS), Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), Chronic Illness Anticipated Stigma Scale (CIASS), Social Provision Scale (SPS), The Functional Assessment of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infection (FAHI), and the Brief COPE Scale. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to analyze the data. The assumed model demonstrated an acceptable level of fit to study data. Findings showed that this model could explain 39% of variances in life satisfaction in Iranian patients with HIV-related diseases. Therefore, in psychological interventions aimed at enhancing life satisfaction, the CIQOL model factors especially barriers to health care and social support can be taken into consideration.

A Network Analysis Study on the Structure and Gender Invariance of the Satisfaction with Life Scale among Spanish University Students

INTRODUCTION

The psychometric properties of the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) have been evaluated across numerous languages and population groups, primarily from a factor analysis perspective. In some studies, inconsistencies in structural invariance have been identified.

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to analyze the properties and gender invariance of the SWLS from a network analysis perspective.

METHOD

A total of 857 Spanish university students were obtained through a stratified random cluster sampling method in a cross-sectional survey design study. Descriptive analysis of the items, partial-correlation network, Bayesian network model estimation, and invariance analysis by gender were conducted.

RESULTS

The instrument did not exhibit any floor or ceiling effects. Each item can be considered univariately normally distributed, and all items clustered in a single and stable community. The partial-correlation network model and centrality measures were stable in the full sample and invariant across genders. Item 3 emerged as the most central node in the network with the highest predictability. The Bayesian network indicated that items 2 and 4 initiate the process, while item 5 acts as the sink, and items 1 and 3 act as mediators.

CONCLUSIONS

The SWLS can be used as a unidimensional measure, and the total score and relationships among items are stable and reliable. Any potential differences among genders cannot be associated with the functioning of the instrument. The predictability of every item was high, and the Bayesian network clearly identified different roles among the items.

Life Satisfaction Among Diverse Participants

INTRODUCTION

Mental health (MH) conditions are among the most common chronic health conditions in the United States. Previous studies suggested decreased in life satisfaction post-COVID-19 in other populations outside the United States. This study explored the correlations between life satisfaction and MH among diverse community post-COVID-19 pandemic.

METHODS

A cross-sectional, non-experimental, retrospective study. The primary outcome was the Satisfaction with Life Scale total score (SWLS_TS) and the characteristics of the cases from self-reported information. Statistical software SPSS was used for descriptive and inferential analyses.

RESULTS

About 218 cases were included for analysis. Many of the cases were Asian Americans (n = 185, 84.1%). The multiple linear regression model significantly predicted 5.2% of the variance in SWLS_TS. Three out of 6 predictors significantly contributed to the model (age β = .172, t = 2.42, P = .017, ethnicity β = .148, t = 2.07, P = .039, and no history of MH β = .248, t = 3.31, P = .001).

CONCLUSION

A diverse population was examined post-COVID-19 pandemic, and the findings suggest a positive correlation with age, ethnicity, and no history of MH with SWLS_TS.

Relationship of Momentary Volition to Occupational Experience and Life Perspective in Undergraduate Students

Our lives are comprised of moment-to-moment activities and experiences. According to the Model of Human Occupation, our occupational experiences can be affected by volition, which consists of personal causation, values, and interests. This study investigated how momentary volition could affect activity satisfaction and mind-wandering while performing occupations. This study also examined the relationship of momentary volition with overall life perspectives on life satisfaction and life balance. Undergraduate students participated in this cross-sectional study. The experience sampling method (ESM), which repeatedly collects real-time data in everyday life, was applied in this study to measure students' momentary states such as activity, volition, activity satisfaction, and mind-wandering. After completing the ESM, participants' life satisfaction and life balance were measured using the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) and the Life Balance Inventory (LBI), respectively. Forty-two participants and 1092 sampling data points were included in the analysis. At the event level, regression analysis was performed to identify volition elements to contribute to activity satisfaction and mind-wandering. At the personal level, correlation analysis was used to determine the relationship of momentary volition to life satisfaction and life balance. Momentary personal causation, values, and interests contributed to activity satisfaction. Mind-wandering was predicted negatively by interests but positively by personal causation. Momentary interests were positively correlated with SWLS and LBI scores. This study demonstrated that momentary volition was associated with activity satisfaction and engagement, as well as life satisfaction and balance in undergraduate students. Momentary volition, especially interests, contributed to positive occupational experiences and life perspectives. This study suggests that occupational therapy practitioners need to consider momentary interests to provide occupation-centered interventions for undergraduate students.

Culturally tailored group Qigong exercise in older Chinese immigrants: A feasibility study

BACKGROUND

Culturally tailored group exercise bridges health disparities among new immigrants, particularly older adults. We designed a Chinese Qigong (Baduanjin) exercise intervention testing the feasibility and acceptability among older Chinese at a senior daycare center in Philadelphia, PA, US.

METHODS

10-week Qigong group in-person exercise was delivered 5 days a week, using a 12-minute video tutorial under trained research assistants' guidance. Daily attendance and attrition was recorded. Participants completed baseline self-report assessments on physical and mental health, and two computerized cognitive tests, the psychomotor vigilance test and a memory test.

RESULTS

53 older adults participated (mean age: 78, female: 88.7%). Average daily attendance was 65.28%. Stratification analysis on age groups <80 and ≥80 shows no significant differences on key variables.

CONCLUSIONS

Recruitment for Baduanjin Qigong exercise was feasible in senior daycare centers, and older adults could easily learn and safely follow exercise movements. Preliminarily findings call for further research.

Life Satisfaction and Self-Esteem in Older Adults Engaging in Formal Volunteering: A Cross-Sectional Study in Taiwan

Previous research has reported an association between life satisfaction, self-esteem, and volunteering. However, it is unclear whether self-esteem is associated with life satisfaction in older adults who are already engaged in volunteering. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the association between life satisfaction and self-esteem in older adults who were formally volunteering at a non-governmental organization in Taiwan. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 186 formal volunteers aged ≥ 65 years who were recruited from the Keelung chapter of the Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation in Taiwan. A hierarchical stepwise linear regression was used to examine the association between scores on the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) with the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) and the Hedonic and Eudaimonic Motives for Activities-Revised (HEMA-R) scale. The results showed that SWLS was significantly associated with RSES score (standardized beta (std. β) = 0.199, p = 0.003), the eudaimonic subscale score of the HEMA-R (std. β = 0.353, p < 0.001), a vegetarian diet (std. β = 0.143, p = 0.027), and volunteering for five days or more a week (std. β = 0.161, p = 0.011). In conclusion, improving self-esteem and promoting eudaimonic motives in older adults who are formally volunteering could be effective strategies for enhancing their levels of life satisfaction.

Deriving Meaning from Chaos: The Mediating Role of the Sense of Coherence in the Serial Relationships among Fear of COVID-19, Indices of Psychological Distress, and Life Satisfaction

The current study focused on the role of the sense of coherence (SOC) in the serial relationships among the fear of COVID-19, indices of psychological distress, and life satisfaction. It examined the hypothesis that an SOC would mitigate the impact of the fear of COVID-19 on psychological distress, which in turn would positively impact life satisfaction. Participants were school teachers (N = 355) who completed the Fear of COVID-19 Scale, the trait scale of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, the Beck Hopelessness Scale, the short form of the Sense of Coherence Scale, and the Satisfaction with Life Scale. A path analysis confirmed the mediating role of the dimensions of the SOC in the relationships among the fear of COVID-19, indices of psychological distress, and life satisfaction. Specifically, comprehensibility, meaningfulness, and manageability were found to mediate the associations between the fear of COVID-19 and anxiety, and the fear of COVID-19 and hopelessness, which in turn were associated with higher levels of life satisfaction. The findings confirmed that an SOC is an important source of resilience. Interventions that facilitate the re-appraisal of stressors as challenges and enhance the awareness of practical coping strategies can build an SOC and promote mental health.

Association of health asset value with subjective well-being, depression, health management strategy and habits in South Korea

This study aims to measure the monetary value of health asset based on the self-reported health status and rate of health asset value (HAV), and to evaluate its application to the subjective well-being and health competency of a representative sample of South Korea. From March to April 2021, 1000 participants were randomly sampled nationwide in South Korea and administered questionnaires including self-reported rate of health asset value and health status, the Subjective Well-Being Index (SWBI), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), Smart Management Strategy for Health Assessment Tool (SAT), and 11 health habits. In multiple stepwise logistic regression model adjusted for basic demographic variables (age, sex, region, monthly income level, and comorbidity), current HAV was independently associated positively with SWBI (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 4.32; confidence interval [CI] 2.27-8.23) and negatively with PHQ-9 (aOR 0.68; 95% CI 0.51-0.90). Core (aOR 1.66; CI 1.25-2.19), Preparation (aOR 1.79; CI 1.24-2.59), and Implementation Strategy scores of SAT (aOR 1.79; CI 1.26-2.55) were independently associated positively with current HAV. All 11 health habits were independently associated positively with current HAV (aOR range from 1.80 to 3.19). The HAV approach offers a new monetary value of health that can be used in making individual or political decisions of improving health or reducing health inequity.

The effects of survey mode on self-reported psychological functioning: Measurement invariance and latent mean comparison across face-to-face and web modes

Despite the increasing popularity of mixed-mode approaches to data collection, studies examining measurement equivalence across different survey modes in representative samples of the general population, particularly focusing on measures of socially sensitive psychological constructs, are sparse. In this study, we used data from a large representative sample of the Slovenian population (N = 9,900) collected as part of the third wave of the European Health Interview Survey (EHIS) to examine mode-inherent effects (i.e., measurement effects that cannot be neutralized by clever survey design) of the traditional interviewer-mediated face-to-face mode and the increasingly popular self-administered web mode on three measures of psychological functioning, namely the Patient Health Questionnaire Depression Scale (PHQ-8), the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), and the Mental Health Continuum - Short Form (MHC-SF). After controlling for self-selection propensities, our results showed strict measurement invariance for all three scales across the two survey modes, but statistically significant and notable differences in latent means, suggesting that individuals who respond face-to-face systematically report better psychological functioning than individuals who respond over the web. These results suggest significant mode inherent effects that cannot be attributed to measurement non-invariance of the scales between face-to-face and web survey modes, but most likely to social desirability bias in responses achieved in the presence of an interviewer. Administration mode effects must be considered when interpreting and comparing results obtained through different survey modes, particularly interviewer-mediated versus self-administered modes, especially when using measures of culturally desirable traits and behaviors, such as mental health and well-being.

The Satisfaction with Life Scale in breast cancer patients: Psychometric properties

Background/Objective

This study aims to analyze the psychometric properties of the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), examining the reliability of scale scores and providing validity evidence for its use with breast cancer patients. We provide validity evidence based on internal structure and on relationships with positive psychological variables and other variables indicative of psychological adjustment.

Method

Participants were 222 Spanish women with a diagnosis of breast cancer. They completed the SWLS and a battery of questionnaires measuring positive and negative affect, self-esteem, resilience, emotional intelligence, flourishing, optimism, depression, anxiety, and stress.

Results

Confirmatory factor analysis supported a single-factor structure for the SWLS, S-B χ²(5) = 7.36, p = .19, CFI = .99, NNFI = .99, RMSEA = .046. The reliability of test scores estimated with McDonald's omega yielded a value of .80. Validity evidence was provided by a positive correlation between SWLS scores and positive affect, self-esteem, resilience, emotional intelligence (specifically, clarity and repair), flourishing, and optimism (range: .24, .69), and by a negative correlation with negative affect, pessimism, depression, anxiety, and stress (range: -.25, -.59).

Conclusions

The Spanish version of the SWLS showed satisfactory psychometric properties and it is an appropriate measure for use in the breast cancer context.

A network analysis of suicidal ideation, depressive symptoms, and subjective well-being in a community population

Although the relationship between subjective well-being (SWB) and suicidal ideation (SI) has been illustrated in previous research, few studies have conceptualized SWB as a comprehensive measure of life satisfaction in multiple domains, nor have they considered possible mediators such as depressive symptoms. Therefore, the present study aimed to identify dimensions of SWB correlated with SI, and to analyze associations among SWB sub-domains, depressive symptoms, and SI in a community population. A total of 1200 community adults in South Korea, aged 20-86 years, completed self-report questionnaires on demographics, depressive mood (Patient Health Questionnaire-9 [PHQ-9]), SI (item 9 of the PHQ-9), and 14 SWB sub-domains (Subjective Well-Being Inventory). Factors associated with SI, and interactions among SI, depressive mood, and SWB, were identified by logistic regression and phenotype network analyses, respectively. The five main factors influencing the regularized partial correlation network were life satisfaction, self-blame, job, hopelessness, and fatigue. Pathways were observed from work-life balance and life satisfaction to hopelessness; from self-blame and fatigue to safety and health; and from sleep disturbance, concentration difficulties, self-blame, and hopelessness to SI. Making job activities more emotionally rewarding, the potential for career progression and regular work hours could address anhedonia, hopelessness and sleep disturbance, respectively, thus enhancing SWB and reducing SI in the community population.

The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Future Nursing Career Turnover Intention Among Nursing Students

Introduction

A shortage of nurses has been a major global concern, particularly during pandemics. Nursing students turning away from the nursing profession upon graduation may exacerbate nursing workforce shortfalls. The main objective of this study was to assess perceived occupational turnover intention among nursing students and associated factors (fear of COVID-19 and life satisfaction). Students were also asked to provide suggestions that could enhance their intention to join the nursing profession.

Methods

An online survey was sent to all registered undergraduate nursing students at Fujian Medical University, China. The partial least squares structural equation model (PLS-SEM) was used to investigate key factors influencing turnover intention.

Results

A total of 1020 complete responses were received (response rate: 86.2%). Nearly half (49.1%) reported that they would choose not to be on a nursing course if given a choice, 45.4% often think of not going into the nursing profession in the future, and 23.7% would consider entering a healthcare industry that has zero contact with patients. The total turnover intention score range was 3 to 15, and the mean ± standard deviation (SD) was 9.2 (SD ± 2.5). PLS-SEM path analysis revealed that fear of COVID-19 (β = 0.226, p < 0.001) had a positive effect on turnover intention. Satisfaction with life (β = −0.212, p < 0.001) had a negative effect on turnover intention. Analysis of open-ended survey data on students’ perspectives on how to encourage nursing students to enter the nursing workforce revealed five central themes: 1) professional role, respect, and recognition; 2) higher wages; 3) reduce workload; 4) enhance occupational health and safety; and 5) career advancement opportunities.

Conclusion

Factors influencing turnover intention and suggestions to reduce students’ apprehension towards joining the nursing profession found in this study should be seriously taken into consideration in initiatives to address the nurse shortages.

The Mediating Effect of Life Satisfaction on Relation between Perceived Physical Attractiveness and Health-Promoting Lifestyle in Korean Adults

Physical attraction, perceived in terms of satisfaction with body image and interpersonal relationships, can be an essential factor in an individual's emotional and social well-being. However, empirical studies that link physical attraction to health are limited. This study explores the mediating effect of life satisfaction on the relation between perceived physical attractiveness and lifestyle of health, making an effort to reach an optimal state in physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and intellectual domains in Korean adults. Four hundred fifty-nine adults in a community setting participated in this cross-sectional study. The results showed positive associations among physical attractiveness, life satisfaction, and health-promoting lifestyle after adjusting for age, gender, marital status, education, and job status. Life satisfaction partially mediated the relationship between perceived physical attractiveness and a higher lifestyle of health (z = 2.80, p = 0.005). For health promotion and disease prevention, positive psychology can be a suitable strategy. Physical attractiveness and life satisfaction can be important keys to maintain health-promoting lifestyle behavior.

[Psychometric properties of the Satisfaction with Life Scale in young Brazilian adults]

The Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) was originally proposed in the English language to measure the individual's overall perception in relation to life. The study aims to evaluate the psychometric properties of SWLS when applied to young adults and estimate the influence of demographic characteristics on life satisfaction, in a non-probabilistic sample of young adult individuals (18 to 35 years) of both sexes in Araraquara, São Paulo State, Brazil. We assessed the fit of SWLS to the data by confirmatory analysis, using the comparative fit index (CFI), Tucker-Lewis index (TLI), and standardized root mean square residual (SRMR). Reliability was estimated by the alpha ordinal coefficient and omega. Factor invariance was estimated by multigroup analysis, with CFI test of statistical difference (ΔCFI). Comparison of the mean scores on satisfaction with life according to sex, age, economic stratum, and employment status was performed with analysis of variance (ANOVA). Participation included 2,170 individuals (females: 67.8%; age: 22.09 years). The model's fit to the different samples was adequate (CFI = 0.981-0.998; TLI = 0.962-0.996; SRMR = 0.026-0.040; omega = 0.842-0.869; alpha = 0.862-0.889). Strict invariance was seen for the target variables. Life satisfaction was greater among individuals in higher economic strata. The data obtained with SWLS were valid, reliable, and invariant between samples with different sex, age, economic strata, and employment status. Life satisfaction was greater among individuals from higher economic strata and did not differ by sex, age, or employment status.

Influence of healthy lifestyle behaviors on life satisfaction in the aging population of Thailand: a national population-based survey

BACKGROUND

Understanding the influence of healthy lifestyle behaviors on population-level life satisfaction is few known in the aging population, especially in low- and middle-income countries in Asia. The objective of our study was to analyse the association of lifestyle behaviors with life satisfaction in a nationally-representative sample of older persons in Thailand.

METHODS

The sample was obtained from a baseline phase of a nationally-representative, longitudinal survey of the Thai population. The study employed a multistage sampling technique to recruit study participants age 60 years or older from the five geographic regions of Thailand. In this study, 1460 adults age 60 years or older from 3670 households successfully completed face-to-face interviews by trained staff with a structured questionnaire. Information on self-reported life satisfaction, lifestyle behaviors, and sociodemographic characteristics were collected via survey questionnaire. Life satisfaction was assessed using the Scale with Life Satisfaction (SWLS) [1 to 7] response. Binary logistic regression analysis was used in investigating the association between lifestyle behaviors and life satisfaction.

RESULTS

The median age of the participants was 68.1 (60-93 years). The overall mean life satisfaction score was 24.2 ± 5.6. Regular physical activity (at least 30 min per day) and sufficient fruit and vegetable (FV) intake (at least 400 g per day) were significantly associated with older people's life satisfaction (p ≤ 0.001 and p ≤ 0.10, respectively) after controlling all sociodemographic variables. Participants who had regular physical activity were 1.7 times as likely to be satisfied as those with less physical activity (95% CI 1.284-2.151). Participants with sufficient daily FV intake were 1.3 times as likely to be satisfied with life as those with insufficient daily FV (95% CI 0.994-1.723). Life satisfaction score also differed significantly by sociodemographic characteristics (sex, age, marital status, educational attainment) and presence of chronic disease.

CONCLUSIONS

To improve the life satisfaction of older persons, taking into account sociodemographic characteristics of the population and absence of chronic disease, the need for promotion of healthy lifestyle behaviors, especially regular physical activity and sufficient FV intake, must be recommended.

Perceived Stress and Life Satisfaction Among Chinese Clinical Nursing Teachers: A Moderated Mediation Model of Burnout and Emotion Regulation

Our previous study indicated that clinical teaching nurses in China suffered high levels of perceived stress and burnout, mainly because they were taking double responsibilities of nursing and teaching at the same time. The study aimed to investigate the underlying mechanisms of how and when perceived stress increased the risk of burnout and decreased life satisfaction among clinical teaching nurses. Questionnaires about perceived stress, burnout, emotion regulation, and life satisfaction were self-administered to 1,372 teaching nurses from eight tertiary military hospitals in China. Correlation and hierarchical multiple regressions were employed for data analysis. The results revealed that perceived stress had direct and indirect impacts on life satisfaction, with the principal element of burnout-emotional exhaustion-acting as a mediator. Moreover, the association between perceived stress and emotional exhaustion was moderated by emotion suppression-a key emotion regulation strategy. The negative impact of perceived stress on burnout was stronger among teaching nurses with high emotion suppression than among those with low emotion suppression. The present study contributed to a deeper understanding of the relationship between perceived stress and life satisfaction and also suggested further research into emotion regulation interventions to alleviate or eliminate the impact of perceived stress on burnout and eventually improve the life satisfaction for Chinese clinical nursing teachers.

Parenting Warmth and Strictness across Three Generations: Parenting Styles and Psychosocial Adjustment

Recent emergent research is seriously questioning whether parental strictness contributes to children’s psychosocial adjustment in all cultural contexts. We examined cross-generational differences in parental practices characterized by warmth and practices characterized by strictness, as well as the relationship between parenting styles (authoritative, indulgent, authoritarian, and neglectful) and psychosocial adjustment in adulthood. Parenting practices characterized by warmth (affection, reasoning, indifference, and detachment) and strictness (revoking privileges, verbal scolding, and physical punishment) were examined. Psychosocial adjustment was captured with multidimensional self-concept and well-being (life satisfaction and happiness). Participants were 871 individuals who were members of three generations of Spanish families: College students (G3), their parents (G2), and their grandparents (G1). Results showed two different cross-generational patterns in parenting practices, with an increased tendency toward parental warmth (parents use more affection and reasoning but less indifference across generations) and a decreased tendency toward parental strictness (parents use revoking privileges, verbal scolding, and physical punishment less across generations). Interestingly, despite cross-generational differences in parenting practices, a common pattern between parenting styles and psychosocial adjustment was found: indulgent parenting was related to equal or even better self-concept and well-being than authoritative parenting, whereas parenting characterized by non-warmth (authoritarian and neglectful) was related to poor scores.

Exploring the Role of Malaysian Student’s Intrapreneurial Self-Capital in the Relationship between Satisfaction with Life, Academic Performance, and Flourishing

Intrapreneurial self-capital is the construct coined by Di Fabio as a core of individual resources used to cope with career and life construction challenges. In this study, we used the model of Individual Differences in Evaluating Life Satisfaction (IDELS) to examine the mediating role of intrapreneurial self-capital in the relationship between life satisfaction and flourishing among Malaysian undergraduate students. The Intrapreneurial Self-Capital Scale (ISCS), Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), and Flourishing Scale were administered to 665 undergraduate students from one of the public universities in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. The results reported a significant direct effect of student satisfaction with life to flourishing. A significant path coefficient was also found from satisfaction with life and student academic performance to intrapreneurial self-concept providing the support that student satisfaction with life and academic performance has a positive effect on their intrapreneurial self-concept. The coefficients from intrapreneurial self-concept to flourishing was also significant. This provides initial support that an intrapreneurial self-concept may have a positive mediating effect on the relationship between satisfaction with life, academic performance, and flourishing. We found that the indirect effects of satisfaction with life and academic performance on flourishing through intrapreneurial self-concept were significant. These results provided further support for the mediating effect of intrapreneurial self-concept. The analysis also that revealed satisfaction with life was significantly and positively related to flourishing. However, the finding showed no significant direct effect of student academic performance on flourishing.
