Study of the Spatio-Temporal Differentiation of Factors Influencing Carbon Emission of the Planting Industry in Arid and Vulnerable Areas in Northwest China

From Agricultural Green Production to Farmers' Happiness: A Case Study of Kiwi Growers in China

Happiness is the ultimate goal of everyone working and earning wealth. At present, in the vast rural areas of China, the excessive and unscientific application of chemical fertilizers and pesticides is raising serious concerns for environmental protection. The Chinese government has strongly promoted agricultural green production as an alternative to the previous agricultural paradigm that sacrificed the environment. A shift towards agricultural green production has become imperative. However, will it bring "happiness" to farmers who partake in this shift? Using data from 1138 farmers in Shanxi, Northwest China, throughout 2022, this article examines the relationship between the adoption of agricultural green production and farmers' happiness. The empirical findings indicate that the adoption of agricultural green production can considerably increase farmers' happiness and that the more types of agricultural green technologies that are implemented, the greater the happiness of farmers. Further mediating effect analysis suggests that this mechanism occurs through raising the absolute and relative income, mitigating agricultural pollution, and elevating the social status. The findings shed new light on the effect of farmers' economic behavior on their happiness and underline the necessity of implementing relevant policies.

Spatial and Temporal Characteristics and Drivers of Agricultural Carbon Emissions in Jiangsu Province, China

Scientific measurement and analysis of the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of agricultural carbon emissions (ACEs) and the influencing factors are important prerequisites for the formulation of reasonable ACEs reduction policies. Compared with previous studies, this paper fully considers the heterogeneity of rice carbon emission coefficients, measures and analyzes the spatial and temporal characteristics of ACEs in Jiangsu Province from three carbon sources, including agricultural land use, rice cultivation, and livestock and poultry breeding, and explores spatial clustering patterns and driving factors, which can provide a reference for agricultural low-carbon production. The results indicate that from 2005 to 2020, Jiangsu's ACEs showed a decreasing trend, with an average annual decrease of 0.32%, while agricultural carbon emission density (ACED) showed an increasing trend, with an average annual increase of 0.16%. The area with the highest values for ACEs is concentrated in the northern region of Jiangsu, while the areas with the highest values for ACED are distributed in the southern region. The spatial clustering characteristics of ACEs have been strengthening. The "H-H" agglomeration is mainly concentrated in Lianyungang and Suqian, while the "L-L" agglomeration is concentrated in Zhenjiang, Changzhou, and Wuxi. Each 1% change in rural population, economic development level, agricultural technology factors, agricultural industry structure, urbanization level, rural investment, and per capita disposable income of farmers causes changes of 0.112%, -0.127%, -0.116%, 0.192%, -0.110%, -0.114%, and -0.123% in Jiangsu's ACEs, respectively. To promote carbon emission reduction in agriculture in Jiangsu Province, we should actively promote the development of regional synergistic carbon reduction, accelerate the construction of new urbanization, and guide the coordinated development of agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry, and fisheries industries.

Short and long-run causal effects of agriculture, forestry, and other land use on greenhouse gas emissions: evidence from China using VECM approach

Climate change caused by different anthropogenic activities is a subject of attention globally. There is a concern on how to maintain a clean environment and at the same time achieve optimal use of land. To this end, this study examines the causal effects of land use including agricultural, forestry, and other land categories on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The data for China is collected over the period 1990 to 2012 for the empirical examination. By employing vector error correction model (VECM), it is found that there is significant long-run causality among variables. However, in the short run expectedly, only land under agriculture has strong causality with the GHG emissions. The results in case of variance decomposition analysis highlight that land under agriculture and other use significantly causes the GHG emissions in the long run. Further, impulse responses of variables are also measured with the Cholesky one standard deviation. The results are robust and support the argument that different land uses cause GHG emissions in China. The study provides insights for policy makers to improve the activities occurring on agricultural and other land uses. Assessment of overall potential, including bio energy, needs to include analysis of trade-offs and feedbacks with land-use competition. Many positive linkages with sustainable development and with adaptation exist but are case and site specific as they depend on scale, scope, and pace of implementation.

Spatial–Temporal Evolution Characteristics and Influencing Factors of Agricultural Water Use Efficiency in Northwest China—Based on a Super-DEA Model and a Spatial Panel Econometric Model

Improving agricultural water use efficiency (AWUE) is an important way to solve the shortage of water resources in arid and semi-arid regions. This study used the Super-DEA (data envelopment analysis) to measure the AWUE of 52 cities in Northwest China from 2000 to 2018. Based on spatial and temporal perspectives, it applied Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis (ESDA) to explore the dynamic evolution and regional differences of AWUE. A spatial econometric model was then used to analyze the main factors that influence the AWUE in Northwest China. The results showed firstly that the overall AWUE in Northwest China from 2000 to 2018 presented a steady upward trend. However, only a few cities achieved effective agricultural water usage by 2018, and the differences among cities were obvious. Secondly, AWUE showed an obvious spatial autocorrelation in Northwest China and showed significant high–high and low–low agglomeration characteristics. Thirdly, economic growth, urbanization development, and effective irrigation have significant, positive effects on AWUE, while per capita water resource has a significant, negative influence. Finally, when improving the AWUE in arid and semi-arid regions, plans should be formulated according to local conditions. The results of this study can provide new ideas on the study of AWUE in arid and semi-arid regions and provide references for the formulation of regional agricultural water resource utilization policies as well.
