Adsorption of Lead (II) from Aqueous Solution with High Efficiency by Hydrothermal Biochar Derived from Honey

Na/N Co-doped Seaweed Biochar Composite for Efficient Removal of Aqueous Pb(II) and Cu(II)

Pollution from harmful heavy metal ions such as Pb(II) and Cu(II) is causing serious environmental and health problems. In this study, Sodium and nitrogen co-doped porous carbon material (Na/NABc) was successfully prepared from seaweed, sodium hydroxide, and dicyandiamide. The experimental results showed that Na/NABc is an excellent adsorbent for the effective removal of Pb(II) and Cu(II) from water bodies. Specifically, 99.8% of Pb(II) and 64.6% Cu(II) (100 mg/L) were removed within 12 h using 10 mg Na/NABc(10%) at 25 °C. The adsorption of Pb(II) and Cu(II) in aqueous solution by Na/NABc(10%) was efficient and rapid in the first stage. The theoretical maximum removal capacities of Na/NABc for Pb(II) and Cu(II) were 959.6 and 299.1 mg/g, respectively. Pb(II) and Cu(II) ions were adsorbed quickly in the first 60 min, and the kinetics data were generally consistent with a pseudo-second-order model. Na/NABc(10%) had a large distribution coefficient for Pb(II) (8.38 L/mg) and Cu(II) (1.17 L/mg). The possible mechanisms were precipitation, Ion exchange, and surface complexation. The removal rate can reach about 70% after five cycles, and the release of sodium meets the standard. The results of this study demonstrate the potential applicability of Na/NABc(10%) for adsorption of heavy metals from aqueous solution.

The effect of biochar prepared at different pyrolysis temperatures on microbially driven conversion and retention of nitrogen during composting

Aerobic composting is one of the most economical ways to produce organic fertilizer from agricultural wastes. In this research, we independently developed a simple composting simulation reactor. The effects of biochar pyrolysised at different pyrolysis temperatures (B1-450 °C; B2-550 °C; and B3-650 °C) on nitrogen conversion (Total nitrogen (TN), ammonium nitrogen (NH₄ ⁺-N), nitrate nitrogen (NO₃ ^--N), cumulative amount of ammonia (CEA) and nitrous oxide (CEN) emission, nitrogen loss rate (NLR), etc.) and functional microbial community (cbbL, cbbM and nifH) structure in the composting system were studied. Results showed that the addition of biochar significantly improved the efficiency of composting, increased the NO₃ ^--N concentration and reduced the NLR (%) in the composting system (B3 (31.4 ± 2.73)<B2=B1 (41.7 ± 3.29)<B0 (54.5 ± 3.34), p ≤ 0.05), while the loss rate of nitrogen positively correlated with compost pH. Denitrifying bacterial genera such as Pseudomonas, Alcaligenes, Paracoccus, Bacillus, Citrobacter, Mesorhizobium, Thiobacillus and Rhodococcus in this study was an important reason for nitrogen loss during composting, and the abundance of autotrophic microorganisms (such as Sulfuritalea, Hydrogenophaga, Thiobacillus, Thiomonas and Candidatus_Thioglobus) in treatments with biochar (B1, B2 and B3) were higher than that in B0. Besides, the community structure in the treatments B2 and B3 was similar at the end of composting and clearly distinguished from that in B1. Moreover, the five functions predicted by OTUs in this study with the highest proportions were chemoheterotrophy, nitrate reduction, fermentation, aerobic chemoheterotrophy and nitrogen respiration. The study provided a theoretical basis for the application of biochar to improve the compost-related processes.

Low Temperature One-Pot Hydrothermal Carbonization of Corn Straw into Hydrochar for Adsorbing Cadmium (II) in Wastewater

Corn straw, a typical agricultural waste, was directly converted into hydrochar with a yield of 77.56% by hydrothermal carbonization at 140–230 °C for 2 h with a solid–liquid ratio of 1:20. The morphology and surface properties were characterized by elemental analysis, specific surface area and pore size analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results showed that with the increase of hydrothermal reaction temperature, some physical and chemical properties such as the increase of hydrocarbon content, crystallinity, and specific surface area of hydrochar changed significantly. A series of chemical reactions such as dehydration, decarboxylation, and aromatization occurred in the hydrothermal carbonization process so that the prepared hydrochar had rich oxygen-containing functional groups (-HO, C-O-C, C=O) and unique porous structure made the hydrochar prepared at 170 °C had the best removal effect on Cd2+ in solution (5.84 mg/g). These specific conditions could remove Cd2+ and greatly improve the adsorption performance. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Freundlich isotherm model could better describe the adsorption behavior of Cd2+. Therefore, corn straw hydrochar as a potential adsorbent for removing Cd2+ from water.

A Mild Method for Preparation of Highly Selective Magnetic Biochar Microspheres

We report the use of biochar and Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles as co-stabilizers for oil-in-water (o/w) Pickering emulsion. The emulsion is subsequently used to prepare magnetic tetracycline-imprinted biochar composite microspheres (MMIPMs) with good uniformity and high selectivity. The MMIPMs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunner-Emmet-Teller (BET) measurements, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and thermogravimetry analysis (TGA). The adsorption properties of tetracycline to the MMIPMs were investigated using different adsorption experiments including adsorption kinetic experiment, equilibrium binding experiment, selectivity evaluation and competitive adsorption tests. The theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of the MMIPMs (15.45 mg g⁻¹) was greater than that of the raw biochar (2.10 mg g⁻¹) and non-imprinted biochar composite microspheres (3.39 mg g⁻¹) for tetracycline. Further, the MMIPMs were used as adsorbent for magnetic solid phase extraction (SPE) for the extraction of tetracycline present in drinking water, milk, fish and chicken samples. Under optimal conditions, the results showed good recovery yield ranging from 88.41% to 106.29% with a relative standard deviation (RSD) ranging from 0.35% to 6.83%, respectively.
