Perceived Barriers to Rural Elderly Women's Health-Promoting Behaviors: An Ecological Perspective

Loneliness, Psychological Well-being, Depression, and Social Participation in the Older Persons: Rural and Urban Differences

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this study is to compare the loneliness, psychological well- being, depression, and social participation of elderly people living in Turkish society between rural and urban areas. The sample group of the study, in which a correlational survey model was used, consisted of 610 elderly adults.

METHOD

The study population consists of two groups: the first group consists of individuals over 65 years of age living in the city (Istanbul) (n= 291), and the second group consists of individuals over 65 years of age living in rural areas (rural areas of Ordu) (n= 319). Socio-demographic Information Form, Loneliness in the Elderly Scale, Geriatric Depression Scale, Psychological Well-Being in the Elderly Scale, and Social Inclusion Scale were applied online. Statistical analyses of the study were conducted using SPSS 27.00, and the Independent Samples t-test and ANOVA test were used.

RESULTS

According to the findings of this study, statistically significant results were found in psychological well-being, social inclusion, social relations, loneliness and depression, and place of residence. It was observed that the social isolation and social acceptance levels of those living in urban areas were higher than those living in rural areas. Social, loneliness, and depression scores of those living in the village/town were found to be higher than those living in the city centre. Furthermore, the social relationship scores of those living in the village/town were found to be higher than those living in the city centre.

CONCLUSION

The increasing elderly population worldwide has become an issue that requires global measures. Place of residence is one of the factors thought to affect older people's health and well- being. It is thought that the study data will contribute to new policies that will ensure the protection and promotion of elderly health and those working in this field. In addition, the study, which provides information about Turkish culture, will also enable intercultural comparisons.

Ageing in Context: An Ecological Model to Understand Social Participation Among Indigenous Adults in Chile

The social participation of older adults occupies a central position in international discourse regarding ageing, the ecological model makes it possible to examine and assess the different factors that influence the understanding of what encourages social participation by older adults. This study used the ecological model to analyse how personal, community and environmental factors are related to satisfaction with social participation among Chilean older adults, a majority of whom are indigenous, living in rural areas (n = 800). The results confirmed that satisfaction with social participation was related to personal factors (feelings of depression, functioning into basic activities of daily living (ADL) and autonomy), community factors (perceived social support from social group) and environmental factors (accessibility of physical setting within the village). Our findings confirmed a high level of social participation among indigenous adults, with rural and indigenous surroundings appearing to be a factor that protects and promotes social integration.

Older People's Perception and Experience Regarding Health Promotion in Turkey: A Qualitative Study

The aim of this study is to examine the perceptions and experiences of older people regarding health promotion. Using a phenomenological design, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 22 older people. Data analysis was carried out according to the Colaizzi's method. The analysis revealed five themes (health-promoting activities, outcome expectations, triggers for activities, supporting factors, perceived obstacles). Older people emphasized healthy eating, walking, avoiding stress, and having health checkups as health-promoting behaviors. It was determined that the older people made efforts to display health-promoting behaviors, but they performed the activities insufficiently. The study findings show that interventions to be developed to improve the health of older people should aim at both cognitive and behavioral changes. Nurses should plan multidisciplinary and community-based interventions to reduce the socioeconomic and environmental factors that prevent older people from participating in health-promoting activities.

Effect of Health Promotion Interventions in Active Aging in the Elderly: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Background

Active aging has been the paradigm of the old-age lifestyle. Integrated aging care interventions in health centers primarily focus on diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, depression, and cardiovascular diseases, and there is no program or training regarding active aging. This study was carried out from September to December 2021 to determine the effectiveness of an intervention program to promote active aging in the elderly referred to Mashhad health centers.

Methods

This randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted on 60 elderly individuals without disabling diseases and cognitive impairment who presented to the Daneshamooz health center in Mashhad in 2021. Through a simple block allocation scheme, those who met the inclusion criteria were randomly divided into the intervention and control groups. The intervention group received the health promotion program during 6 sessions (one session per week) about nutrition, physical activity, responsibility, stress management, communications, and spiritual aspects. The data were gathered using the active aging questionnaire and analyzed using the SPSS software version 25; independent and paired t-test, Wilcoxon, and Mann-Whitney U tests were utilized. P value< 0.05 was considered statistically significant.

Results

The results of this study demonstrated that after the intervention, the total active aging score in the intervention group increased significantly (68.5±3 to 85±8.25) (P<0.001) and there was a significant difference between the control and intervention groups (68±3.25 to 85±8.25) (P<0.001).

Conclusion

According to the results, training based on a health-enhancement approach can effectively promote active aging in the elderly. Therefore, more attention should be paid to strategic planning for active aging in health centers.Trial Registration Number: IRCT20210308050639N.

Understanding perspectives on health-promoting behaviours among older adults with hypertension

Purpose

Health-promoting behaviours (HPBs) are considered the key to determining health among older adults with hypertension. Increasing our understanding of older adults’ views on HPBs could facilitate the development of interventions aimed at improving their quality of life. This study aims to describe the perceptions of older adults with high blood pressure concerning their HPBs and associated factors.

Methods

Semi-structured interviews with 40 individuals in Thailand were used to collect the data, which were analysed using thematic analysis.

Results

The results were categorized into five main themes related to personal, social, and environmental factors. Older adults explained that their experiences with HPBs involve taking responsibility for controlling blood pressure by following a doctor’s prescription, modifying their lifestyles to be healthier, sustaining social relationships, and experiencing spiritual growth through religious practices for inner peace. Older adults also identified environmental factors that influenced their engagement in HPBs depending on their residential areas.

Conclusions

The findings of this study highlight the importance of practices in which professionals support and encourage older adults to perform HPBs to maintain health and improve their well-being.

Multi-Dimensional Accessibility Barriers in Care Services for the Rural Elderly with Disabilities: A Qualitative Study in China

This research covers a multi-dimensional investigation into accessibility barriers in care services for older people with disabilities in rural China. In-depth interviews with 13 rural disabled older people in China were conducted using qualitative methods. Based on a welfare pluralism approach, the results showed that in comparison with urban areas, care services for disabled older populations in rural areas are more subject to social barriers. This can be seen in the limited state (lack of resources, rigorous eligibility qualifications, uneven distribution, and irregular implementation); the absent market (low levels of consumption, high cost pressures, self-exclusion, and traditional cultural constraints); absent NGOs and volunteers (difficulties in access for NGOs and volunteers outside the area and formation difficulties of local NGOs and volunteers); as well as low-quality care in households and communities (unprofessional care from the spouse, unsustainable care from children, and unavailable community-based care). A multi-subject support network should be established to remove accessibility barriers to care services for older people with disabilities in rural areas through active intervention and interaction. The results of the research provide insights that will aid in the formulation of future social care service plans and health policies for rural older people with disabilities.
