Socioemotional Skills in the Teaching-Learning Process Mediated by Medium- and High-Fidelity Clinical Simulation in Nursing Students: Protocol for a Scoping Review

BACKGROUND

In nursing education, contact with real scenarios implies the design of favorable experiences to develop prioritization, reasoning, critical thinking, and management skills that support future practice. In the context of the teaching-learning process, simulation emerges as a support strategy, but its use and management require the knowledge and appropriation of teachers. Clinical simulation during education promotes growth in technical skills and aptitudes such as critical thinking, emotional management, organization, delegation, and teamwork. The culmination positively impacts the student, reflecting on their confidence, security, and adaptability to unexpected or unknown situations and risks.

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this scoping review is to determine the socioemotional skills described during the teaching-learning process mediated by medium- and high-fidelity clinical simulation in nursing students.

METHODS

The main concepts and limits of the research area will be determined according to the 5 phases of a scoping review proposed by Arksey and O'Malley. Research articles and postgraduate theses published between 2010 and 2023 in English and Spanish will be considered. Dissertation-type documents, book chapters, editorials, abstracts, and articles focused on clinical simulation among nursing professionals will be excluded. The articles will be retrieved from databases available at the Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia, along with CINAHL, Scielo, and PubMed. The search strategy will be based on the Population-Concept-Context framework. Article selection will be carried out by 2 independent evaluators who will review titles and abstracts in stage 1 and the full text in stage 2. A database of retrieved articles will be built with the variables of interest. A qualitative thematic analysis will be conducted by 5 independent reviewers to provide an overview of the literature, focusing on identifying similarities and contrasts between studies and contributions related to the aspects of social skills described in nursing students.

RESULTS

The investigation has not yet started. The findings aim to focus on variables within the academic environment that, when correlated with the clinical simulation experience, may determine student learning. The working hypothesis is that students who experience greater satisfaction or possess better communication skills also demonstrate superior performance during high-fidelity simulation activities. The most relevant results will be contrasted considering the stated objective and knowledge gaps. Key aspects will also be compared with other reviews addressing related topics such as communication, self-efficacy, and self-confidence. Skills described by other authors that were not considered in the initial literature review will also be mentioned.

CONCLUSIONS

Educational institutions are responsible for including learning experiences in controlled environments such as medium- and high-fidelity simulation to ensure the acquisition of technical capabilities and additional socioemotional skills. Recognizing and managing emotions is necessary to provide adequate care for users of health care services and for the increased effectiveness of professionals.

Knowledge Acquisition and Retention in a Flipped Nursing Course: A Quasiexperimental Study

BACKGROUND

Student knowledge acquisition and retention are essential in nursing training. This study examined differences in content knowledge acquisition and retention between traditional and flipped classroom (FC) formats.

METHOD

A pretest-posttest quasiexperimental design with a follow-up test was used for this study of associate degree nursing students in a Hong Kong community college. The control group (n = 141) included nursing students in a traditional classroom (TC) setting before COVID-19 compared with nursing students in an FC (n = 130) setting during the pandemic. The effects were evaluated before the course, postcourse, and 3 months after the course.

RESULTS

Content knowledge scores for both groups improved after the course. Students in the FC performed better in the short-term (posttest immediately after the course) and long-term (follow-up-test 3 months later) than students in the TC.

CONCLUSION

Implementing the FC method effectively promoted students' knowledge acquisition and retention. [J Nurs Educ. 2024;63(8):501-506.].

The effect of simulation-based flipped classroom on acquisition of cardiopulmonary resuscitation skills: A simulation-based randomized trial

BACKGROUND

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an essential skill required by critical care nurses. Evidence has shown that the use of a novel method called simulation-based flipped classroom (SBFC) can save training time in nursing laboratories and, to some extent, enhance social distancing during the current COVID-19 pandemic.

AIM

To evaluate the effects of SBFC on nursing students' acquisition of CPR skills.

STUDY DESIGN

A two-parallel prospective, single-centre, simulation-based, randomized, controlled trial.

METHODS

The total sample size was 326 students. A CPR video was recorded and uploaded on Microsoft Teams channel for the SBFC group only. Thereafter, both groups demonstrated and redemonstrated the CPR procedure. Both groups were then compared according to the simulation experience satisfaction scale and CPR skills acquisition checklist.

RESULTS

Two equally randomly selected groups of 163 undergraduate nursing students completed the study. The SBFC group had a significantly better satisfaction with the simulation experience than the traditional simulation (TS) group (p = 0.03). As regards the mean score of the CPR checklist after simulation, the SBFC group had a significantly higher score than TS group (p = 0.01).

CONCLUSIONS

SBFC using a pre-recorded video can be an effective method that can reduce the time needed for CPR clinical simulation and can be used for the CPR simulation among critical care nurses.

RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE

This study provides critical care nursing educators with a deep understanding regarding the benefits and value of utilizing the SBFC method in the clinical training of CPR skills. SBFC can be used to increase critical care nurses' satisfaction and skill acquisition during CPR training.

The Role of Fundamental Nursing Practices Simulation on Students’ Competencies and Learning Satisfaction: Repeated Measured Design

Few studies have examined the simulation of fundamental nursing practices regarding nursing competencies and learning satisfaction via repeated measured methods. Objectives: To evaluate a simulation of fundamental nursing practices on nursing students’ competencies and learning satisfaction in three time points: before (T1), immediately after (T2), and one month after simulation (T3), and to examine nursing students’ competency predictors to learning satisfaction, immediately after conducting the simulation and one month after. Methods: The study design was a one-group, repeated measures study. Ninety-three undergraduate nursing students were convenience sampled and conducted a simulation of fundamental nursing practices. The students completed a questionnaire at T1, T2, and T3. The Competency Inventory for Registered Nurses questionnaire was distributed, and question about the level of learning satisfaction were asked. Results: All nursing competencies and learning satisfactions increased significantly. Only the legal/ethical practice competency succeeded in predicting the learning satisfaction in T2 and in T3 after conducting simulations. Conclusions: This study has established that a simulation of fundamental nursing practices is effective not just immediately after performing the simulation but also one month after the simulation. Therefore, it is recommended to implement a pedagogical structure of simulations of fundamental nursing practices in other nursing education areas.

The effect of Flipped Classroom through Near Peer Education (FC through NPE) on patient safety knowledge retention in nursing and midwifery students: a solomon four-group design

INTRODUCTION

Selecting an appropriate teaching methodology is one of the key stages in education. This study is an attempt to delve into the effect of FC through NPE on patient safety knowledge retention in nursing and midwifery students.

METHODS

A randomized controlled trial, using the Solomon design, was conducted in 2019 on 82 nursing and midwifery students enrolled from Bushehr nursing and midwifery school. The Subjects were then allocated to four groups via block randomization. The Subjects in both intervention groups studied the educational content online for 2 weeks and subsequently attended the FC through NPE. Both control groups merely received education based on conventional method. The post-test was once administered to the four study groups immediately after completing the program and once again 2 months after it.

RESULTS

The posttest mean scores of knowledge retention in both intervention groups remained the same (P = 0.1), while they were higher in the control groups (P < 0.05). The changes in the mean scores of the post-test in the intervention and follow-up groups did not demonstrate a statistically significant difference between the four study groups (P = 0.130, F = 1.941).

CONCLUSION

The use of the FC through NPE increased the knowledge mean scores; however, it failed to affect knowledge retention. Given the infancy of this pedagogical approach, further studies are needed to investigate its effects on various learning outcomes.

Meta-Analysis of Flipped Learning Effects in Nursing Education

Background: This study is a meta-analysis confirming the effect size of clinical competence, critical thinking ability, self-directedness, and learning satisfaction, the outcome variables of flipped learning applied to nursing education. Methods: We selected 18 related studies that analyzed data using CMA (Comprehensive Meta-Analysis 2.2). Results: The effect size of the entire study was Hedges’ g = 0.68 (95% CI = 0.43~0.92). The heterogeneity of the overall effect size was I² = 90.7% (Q = 246.67, p < 0.001); critical thinking ability had an effect size of Hedges’ g = 0.87, learning satisfaction of Hedges’ g = 0.79, clinical competence of Hedges’ g = 0.53, and self-directedness of Hedges’ g = 0.37. The differences were statistically significant. Conclusion: Flipped learning can effectively improve nursing students’ clinical competence, critical thinking ability, self-direction, and learning satisfaction.

Effects of a Clinical Simulation Course about Basic Life Support on Undergraduate Nursing Students' Learning

Training in basic life support (BLS) using clinical simulation improves compression rates and the development of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills. This study analyzed the learning outcomes of undergraduate nursing students taking a BLS clinical simulation course. A total of 479 nursing students participated. A pre-test and post-test were carried out to evaluate theoretical knowledge of BLS through questions about anatomical physiology, cardiac arrest, the chain of survival, and CPR. A checklist was used in the simulation to evaluate practical skills of basic CPR. The learning outcomes showed statistically significant differences in the total score of the pre-test and after completing the BLS clinical simulation course (pre-test: 12.61 (2.30), post-test: 15.60 (2.06), p < 0.001). A significant increase in the mean scores was observed after completing the course in each of the four parts of the assessment protocol (p < 0.001). The increase in scores in the cardiac arrest and CPR sections were relevant (Rosenthal’s r: −0.72). The students who had prior knowledge of BLS scored higher on both the pre-test and the post-test. The BLS simulation course was an effective method of teaching and learning BLS skills.
