Short-Term Effects of Atmospheric Pollution on Daily Mortality and Their Modification by Increased Temperatures Associated with a Climatic Change Scenario in Northern Mexico

Nursing students' conceptualization of environmental problems: a descriptive cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

The significant challenges of the twenty-first century revolve around environmental issues. Knowing individuals' environmental attitudes and what they see as environmental problems is crucial to mobilizing them to action. Nurses hold a significant responsibility in addressing and combating environmental challenges.

RESEARCH AIM

This study had two objectives: understanding how nursing students classify environmental issues and examining the effects of gender, economic status, school district, family environmental awareness, and perception of global responsibility on their conceptualization of environmental issues.

DESIGN

A descriptive cross-sectional study using a questionnaire.

SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS

The sample consisted of 1466 nursing students from four faculties of two public universities in Turkiye. The study was conducted between January and April 2023.

METHODS

Data were collected using a form that included 19 issues ranging from ecological problems to social problems related to the environment, as well as the Global Social Responsibility Scale (GSRS). The data were analyzed using explanatory factor analysis, multiple regression, and mediator analysis.

RESULTS

Participants classified the environmental issues as eco-social-oriented and human-oriented. First-year students (B = -0.201), male students (B = -0.263), those studying in rural schools (B = -0.123), and those who rarely discuss environmental issues in the family (B = -0.197) describe the problems in the eco-social oriented dimension as less "environmental." The increase in the action-oriented responsibility (B = 0.014) and ecological responsibility (B = 0.077) scores of The Global Social Responsibility Scale leads to an increase in recognizing the problems in this area as environmental issues. Similarly, first-year students (B = -0.340), male students (B = -0.293), and those who rarely discussed environmental issues in the family (B = -0.243) led to a decrease in recognizing problems as environmental in the human-oriented issues dimension. In contrast, poor socioeconomic perception (B = 0.245), negative perception of the future (B = 0.145), and increased action-oriented responsibility (B = 0.024) and ecological responsibility (B = 0.042) led to an increase in recognition of human-oriented issues. The increase in the national responsibility score decreased the score of environmental assessment of the problems in this area (B = -0.017). In addition, the perception of global responsibility partially mediates between students' sociodemographic characteristics and environmental issues recognition scores in both sub-dimensions.

CONCLUSION

This study presents results that point to individual differences among nursing students in addressing environmental issues, reveal the impact of family on these differences, and finally show the importance of curricula to increase students' global social responsibility during their education.

Low ambient temperature and hospitalization for cardiorespiratory diseases in Brazil

Studies have shown that larger temperature-related health impacts may be associated with cold rather than with hot temperatures. Although it remains unclear the cold-related health burden in warmer regions, in particular at the national level in Brazil. We address this gap by examining the association between low ambient temperature and daily hospital admissions for cardiovascular and respiratory diseases in Brazil between 2008 and 2018. We first applied a case time series design in combination with distributed lag non-linear modeling (DLNM) framework to assess the association of low ambient temperature with daily hospital admissions by Brazilian region. Here, we also stratified the analyses by sex, age group (15-45, 46-65, and >65 years), and cause (respiratory and cardiovascular hospital admissions). In the second stage, we performed a meta-analysis to estimate pooled effects across the Brazilian regions. Our sample included more than 23 million hospitalizations for cardiovascular and respiratory diseases nationwide between 2008 and 2018, of which 53% were admissions for respiratory diseases and 47% for cardiovascular diseases. Our findings suggest that low temperatures are associated with a relative risk of 1.17 (95% CI: 1.07; 1.27) and 1.07 (95% CI: 1.01; 1.14) for cardiovascular and respiratory admissions in Brazil, respectively. The pooled national results indicate robust positive associations for cardiovascular and respiratory hospital admissions in most of the subgroup analyses. In particular, for cardiovascular hospital admissions, men and older adults (>65 years old) were slightly more impacted by cold exposure. For respiratory admissions, the results did not indicate differences among the population groups by sex and age. This study can help decision-makers to create adaptive measures to protect public health from the effects of cold temperature.

Exploring the impact of particulate matter on mortality in coastal Mediterranean environments

Air pollution is one of the most important problems the world is facing nowadays, adversely affecting public health and causing millions of deaths every year. Particulate matter is a criteria pollutant that has been linked to increased morbidity, as well as all-cause and cause-specific mortality. However, this association remains under-investigated in smaller-size cities in the Eastern Mediterranean, which are also frequently affected by heat waves and dust storms. This study explores the impact of particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤ 10 μm (PM₁₀) and ≤ 2.5 μm (PM_2.5) on mortality (all-cause, cardiovascular, respiratory) in two coastal cities in the Eastern Mediterranean; Thessaloniki, Greece and Limassol, Cyprus. Generalized additive Poisson models were used to explore overall and gender-specific associations, controlling for long- and short-term patterns, day of week and the effect of weather variables. Moreover, the effect of different lags, season, co-pollutants and dust storms on primary associations was investigated. A 10 μg/m³ increase in PM_2.5 resulted in 1.10 % (95 % CI: -0.13, 2.34) increase in cardiovascular mortality in Thessaloniki, and in 3.07 % (95 % CI: -0.90, 7.20) increase in all-cause mortality in Limassol on the same day. Additionally, significant positive associations were observed between PM_2.5 as well as PM₁₀ and mortality at different lags up to seven days. Interestingly, an association with dust storms was observed only in Thessaloniki, having a protective effect, while the gender-specific analysis revealed significant associations only for the males in both cities. The outcome of this study highlights the need of city- or county-specific public health interventions to address the impact of climate, population lifestyle behaviour and other socioeconomic factors that affect the exposure to air pollution and other synergistic effects that alter the effect of PM on population health.

A New Combined Air Quality and Heat Index in Relation to Mortality in Monterrey, Mexico

The negative synergistic effects of air pollution and sensible heat on public health have been noted in numerous studies. While separate, simplified, and public-facing indices have been developed to communicate the risks of unhealthful levels of air pollution and extreme heat, a combined index containing elements of both has rarely been investigated. Utilizing air quality, meteorology, and mortality data in Monterrey, Mexico, we investigated whether the association between the air quality index (AQI) and mortality was improved by considering elements of the heat index (HI). We created combined indices featuring additive, multiplicative, and either/or formulations and evaluated their relationship to mortality. Results showed increased associations with mortality for models employing indices that combined the AQI and the HI in an additive or multiplicative manner, with increases in the interquartile relative risk of 3-5% over that resulting from models employing the AQI alone.

Time series analysis of short-term effects of particulate matter pollution on the circulatory system disease mortality risk in Lishui District, China

Epidemiological evidence has shown a significant association between short-term exposure to air pollution and mortality risk for circulatory system diseases (CSD). However, informative insights on the significance and magnitude of its relationship in the process of government interventions on abating air pollution are still lacking, particularly in a burgeoning Chinese city. In this study, we conducted a time series study in Lishui District, Nanjing, to examine the effect of ambient particulate matter (PM), e.g., PM_2.5 and PM₁₀, on daily death counts of CSD which included cardiovascular disease (CVD), cerebrovascular disease (CEVD), and arteriosclerotic heart disease (ASHD) mortality from January 1, 2015, to December 31, 2019. The results revealed that each 10 μg/m³ increase in PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ concentration at lag0 day was associated with an increase of 1.33% (95% confidence interval, 0.08%, 2.60%) and 1.12% (0.43%, 1.82%) in CSD mortality; 2.42% (0.44%, 4.43%) and 1.43% (0.32%, 2.55%) in CVD mortality; 1.20% (- 0.31%, 2.73%) and 1.21% (0.38%, 2.05%) in CEVD mortality; and 2.78% (0.00%, 5.62%) and 1.66% (0.14%, 3.21%) in ASHD mortality, respectively. For cumulative risk, the corresponding increase in daily mortality for the same change in PM_2.5 concentration at lag03 day was significantly associated with 1.94% (0.23%, 3.68%), 3.17% (0.58%, 5.84%), 2.38% (0.17%, 4.63%), and 4.92% (1.18%, 8.81%) for CSD, CVD, CEVD, and ASHD, respectively. The exposure-response curves were approximately nonlinear over the entire exposure range of the PM concentrations. We also analyzed the effect modifications by season (warm or cold), age group (0-64 years, 65-74 years, or ≥ 75 years), and sex (male or female). Although not statistically significant, stratified analysis showed greater vulnerability to PM exposure for cold season, population over 65 years of age, and female group.

Control Models and Spatiotemporal Characteristics of Air Pollution in the Rapidly Developing Urban Agglomerations

This paper systematically summarizes the hierarchical cross-regional multi-directional linkage in terms of air pollution control models implemented in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration, including the hierarchical linkage structure of national-urban agglomeration-city, the cross-regional linkage governance of multiple provinces and municipalities, the multi-directional linkage mechanism mainly involving industry access, energy structure, green transportation, cross-regional assistance, monitoring and warning, consultation, and accountability. The concentration data of six air pollutants were used to analyze spatiotemporal characteristics. The concentrations of SO₂, NO₂, PM₁₀, PM_2.5, CO decreased, and the concentration of O₃ increased from 2014 to 2017; the air pollution control has achieved good effect. The concentration of O₃ was the highest in summer and lowest in winter, while those of other pollutants were the highest in winter and lowest in summer. The high pollution ranges of O₃ diffused from south to north, and those of other pollutants decreased significantly from north to south. Finally, we suggest strengthening the traceability and process research of heavy pollution, increasing the traceability and process research of O₃ pollution, promoting the joint legislation of different regions in urban agglomeration, create innovative pollution discharge supervision mechanisms, in order to provide significant reference for the joint prevention and control of air pollution in urban agglomerations.
