Normative Hand Strength of Healthcare Industry Workers in Central Taiwan

Exploring anthropometric and functional factors that influence working adult's handgrip strength in north Australia

BACKGROUND

Handgrip strength (HGS) is a reliable assessment of hand function. Interpretation of HGS is commonly done using normative data. Normative HGS data HGS considers the influence of age and gender without adjustment for anthropometric measurements or functional factors known to influence HGS.

OBJECTIVE

To determine the potential relationship of select anthropometric measurements (height, weight, hand length and width, forearm length and circumference) and functional factors (hand dominance, work and lifestyle category) to HGS.

METHODS

This study included a sample of 119 males and 96 female workers from North Queensland. HGS and six anthropometric measurements were obtained using calibrated instruments and reliable measurement protocols. Age and gender along with three functional factors were documented by self-report.

RESULTS

Right and left mean HGS was greater for individuals who performed heavy/very heavy work (58.1±10.1 kg and 54.1±10.9 kg respectively) compared to light (38.5±12.3 kg and 35.5±11.8 kg) or medium work (44.1±10.8 kg and 40.0±12.9 kg). Mean HGS was greater for individuals who performed heavy/very heavy activity (right 48.5±13.6 kg and left 44.5±13.7 kg) compared to light activity (right 36.3±11.2 kg and left 33.9±11.3 kg) within their lifestyle. HGS positively correlated with gender (p = 0.0001), work (p = 0.001) and anthropometric measurements of forearm circumference (p = 0.001), hand length (p = 0.006) and hand width (p = 0.052).

CONCLUSIONS

Easy to measure anthropometric measurements of forearm circumference, hand length and width are the strongest predictors of HGS in addition to an individual's physical activity at work and in their lifestyle. Consideration of these factors could lead to improved evaluation of HGS scores.

[Using Quantitative Computed Tomography to Study the Correlation Between Physical Composition and Grip Strength in Young People]

Objective

To study with quantitative computed tomography (QCT) the correlation between grip strength and physical composition and waist and hip circumferences in young people with different body mass indexes (BMIs).

Methods

A total of 1310 young people who came to West China Hospital, Sichuan University for physical checkups and underwent chest QCT at our hospital from April to July 2021 were included in the study. Their data were collected and their BMIs were calculated. The subjects were divided according to their BMIs into 4 groups, underweight group (BMI<18.5 kg/m 2), normal-weight group (18.5 kg/m 2≤BMI<24 kg/m 2), overweight group (24 kg/m 2≤BMI<28 kg/m 2), and obesity group (BMI≥28 kg/m 2). The raw data were uploaded to QCT Mindways Pro 6.1 software to be processed for measurement of the fat content (area) of the physical components of the L2 vertebral body, including total adipose tissue (TAT), visceral adipose tissue (VAT), subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), and abdominal fat ratio, or VAT/SAT. Grip strength was measured with CAMRY EH101 digital grip dynamometer. Statistical analysis of the data was performed, and the correlations between grip strength and various physical components, waist circumference, and hip circumference in subjects of different BMIs were examined. In addition, stratified analysis of normal-weight and overweight subjects of different age groups was conducted.

Results

In the normal-weight group, height, body mass, hip circumference and grip strength were positively correlated with grip strength in males aged 21-40 years, SAT was negatively correlated with grip strength in males aged 36-40 years, and VAT/SAT was positively correlated with grip strength in males aged 36-40 years. In normal-weight females aged 21-25 years, SAT was negatively correlated with grip strength, while VAT and VAT/SAT were positively correlated with grip strength. In normal-weight females aged 26-40 years, height, body mass, and hip circumference were positively correlated with grip strength. In normal-weight females aged 36-40 years, VAT/SAT was positively correlated with grip strength. In overweight males aged 21-25 years, hip circumference and body mass were positively correlated with grip strength. In overweight males aged 26-30 years, TAT, waist-to-hip ratio, and waist-to-height ratio were negatively correlated with grip strength. In overweight males aged 31-40 years, height and body mass were positively correlated with grip strength, while waist-to-hip ratio and waist-to-height ratio were negatively correlated with grip strength. In addition, hip circumference was positively correlated with grip strength in overweight males aged 31-35 years. In overweight females aged 21-25 years, waist circumference, hip circumference, and waist-to-height ratio were positively correlated with grip strength. In overweight females aged 26-30 years, height and body mass were positively correlated with grip strength. In overweight females aged 31-35 years, TAT, SAT, waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, and waist-to-height ratio were negatively correlated with grip strength. In overweight females aged 36-40 years, SAT and waist-to-height ratio were negatively correlated with grip strength, while VAT, VAT/SAT, height and body mass were positively correlated with grip strength. The height and body mass of males and females in the underweight group were positively correlated with grip strength, and the hip circumference of females in the underweight group was also positively correlated with grip strength. In the obesity group, TAT, VAT, and waist-to-height ratio were negatively correlated with grip strength in males, but no such correlation was observed in females.

Conclusion

There is a close association between abdominal fat content and grip strength in young people with different BMIs, indicating that young people should control abdominal fat content and hip fat content in order to maintain the strength of corresponding muscles.

Horticulture therapy affected the mental status, sleep quality, and salivary markers of mucosal immunity in an elderly population

Horticultural therapy (HT) has been reported to be beneficial to mental and physical health. This study investigated the effects of HT on the psychological status and mucosal immunity of elderly individuals. Twenty-four participants aged 70-93 were recruited from residential facilities and adult day-care services. Six different HT activities were designed and guided by licensed instructors who performed saliva collection and helped the participants complete the questionnaires before and after each activity. The sleep quality scores were collected during the 6 weeks of HT activities. Saliva was collected and analyzed to determine the concentrations of immunoglobulin A (IgA), lactoferrin, chromogranin A (CgA), α-amylase (AA) and total protein (TP). Comparisons of the questionnaire scores between preactivity and postactivity showed that feelings of satisfaction and happiness were significantly enhanced after each activity. In addition, sleep quality was significantly improved after the 6-week course of HT activities. Regarding mucosal immunity, the preactivity IgA and IgA/TP were significantly increased at week 3 and week 6; in addition, the ratio of lactoferrin/TP was significantly decreased at week 6 compared to week 1. The postactivity AA and CgA levels were significantly enhanced at weeks 2, 3 and 5 compared to the corresponding preactivity levels. In conclusions, HT activities significantly improved the happiness, satisfaction, well-being and sleep quality of the elderly. Moreover, mucosal immunity proteins, including IgA, lactoferrin, CgA and AA, were significantly increased.

Investigation into the Effects of Backrest Angle and Stick Location on Female Strength

OBJECTIVES

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of backrest angle and hand maneuver direction on maximum hand strength and to recommend a strength value for the hand-controlled stick of an aircraft.

METHODS

Forty-eight female subjects were recruited to perform simulated forward-backward and adduction-abduction maneuvers using control sticks. Each subject was free from musculoskeletal disorders and pain. The independent variables included four control maneuvers (forward, backward, adduction, abduction), two right-hand control stick locations (central, side), and three backrest angles (90°, 103°, 108°). The dependent variable was maximum hand strength.

RESULTS

The maximum strength for forward maneuvers with both central and side sticks was strongest at a 90° backrest angle (p < 0.001). The maximum strength for adduction maneuvers with both central and side sticks was also strongest at a 90° backrest angle (p < 0.001). On the other hand, the highest strength was observed at a 108° backrest angle when pulling the stick backward (p < 0.001). The abduction strength was significantly stronger than the adduction strength with a central stick (p < 0.001), but the adduction strength was significantly stronger than the abduction strength with a side stick (p < 0.001-p = 0.017). The forward and abduction strength were significantly different in different locations (p < 0.001). The recommended strength in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) by the US FAA is higher than the strength values observed in this study.

CONCLUSIONS

The backrest angle, directions, and location affected the muscular strength. The recommended values should be reevaluated and adjusted for Taiwanese pilots.
