Spatial Accessibility Analysis of Medical Facilities Based on Public Transportation Networks

Aiming to look at the problems of the unreasonable layout of medical facilities and low coverage of primary medical services. This paper selects tertiary grade A hospitals, general hospitals, specialized hospitals, community-level hospitals, clinics, and pharmacies in the main urban areas of Chongqing as research objects. The nearest analysis, kernel density, mean center, and standard deviational ellipse method were used to analyze the spatial differentiation characteristics of medical facilities and public transportation stations. Spatial accessibility was assessed from the perspective of service area ratios and service population ratios by constructing multiple modes of transportation (pedestrian systems, bus lines, rail lines). The results show that (1) the spatial layout of medical facilities in the main urban area of Chongqing is unbalanced; and the spatial distribution of medical facilities is characterized by "large agglomeration, small dispersion" and "multi-center group"; (2) the sub-core circle is centered on the Southwest University Area in Beibei District, the University Town Area in Shapingba, the Yudong Area and Lijiatuo Area in Banan District, the Pingan Light Rail Station Area in Dadukou District, the Chongqing No. 8 Middle School Area in Jiulongpo District, the Tea Garden Area in Nanan District, and the Jiangbei Airport Area in Yubei District; (3) the medical facilities with the weakest average accessibility are tertiary grade A hospitals, and the strongest are pharmacies; (4) the areas with vital average accessibility are Yuzhong District, Shapingba District, Dadukou District, and Nanan District.

Evaluation of Medical Carrying Capacity for Megacities from a Traffic Analysis Zone View: A Case Study in Shenzhen, China

Sustainable Development Goals propose to build inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities and human settlements, which requires us to scientifically evaluate the carrying capacity of current urban public service facilities, but there is still a lack of in-depth exploration of urban public medical service facilities. Therefore, this paper, within the mobile phone signaling data, improved the potential model and carrying capacity evaluation model of public medical facilities, explored the spatial pattern distribution of public medical resources in Shenzhen, and analyzed the current situation of carrying capacity of public medical resources. The study showed that: (1) the overall spatial distribution of public medical resources in Shenzhen is uneven, showing a pattern of multicenter aggregation and multilevel development; (2) the service potential of public medical facilities has obvious spatial variations, with Futian District, Dapeng New District, and Nanshan District showing more obvious high-gravitational-value aggregation centers; (3) medical facilities in Shenzhen are never empty, but the problems of medical underloading and overloading are severe, and spatial allocation and utilization efficiency need to be further optimized. The research results can provide a scientific basis for the research on the allocation and sustainable construction of medical resources in megacities.

Modeling Health Seeking Behavior Based on Location-Based Service Data: A Case Study of Shenzhen, China

Understanding residents’ health seeking behavior is crucial for the planning and utilization of healthcare resources. With the support of emerging location-based service (LBS) data, this study proposes a framework for inferring health seeking trips, measuring observed spatial accessibility to healthcare, and interpreting the determinants of health seeking behavior. Taking Shenzhen, China as a case study, a supply–demand ratio calculation method based on observed data is developed to explore basic patterns of health seeking, while health seeking behavior is described using a spatial analysis framework based on the Huff model. A total of 95,379 health seeking trips were identified, and their analysis revealed obvious differences between observed and potential spatial accessibility. In addition to the traditional distance decay effect and number of doctors, the results showed health seeking behavior to be determined by hospital characteristics such as hospital scale, service quality, and popularity. Furthermore, this study also identified differences in health seeking behavior between subgroups with different ages, incomes, and education levels. The findings highlight the need to incorporate actual health seeking behavior when measuring the spatial accessibility of healthcare and planning healthcare resources. The framework and methods proposed in this study can be applied to other contexts and other types of public facilities.

The Research Development of Hedonic Price Model-Based Real Estate Appraisal in the Era of Big Data

In the era of big data, advances in relevant technologies are profoundly impacting the field of real estate appraisal. Many scholars regard the integration of big data technology as an inevitable future trend in the real estate appraisal industry. In this paper, we summarize 124 studies investigating the use of big data technology to optimize real estate appraisal through the hedonic price model (HPM). We also list a variety of big data resources and key methods widely used in the real estate appraisal field. On this basis, the development of real estate appraisal moving forward is analyzed. The results obtained in the current studies are as follows: First, the big data resources currently applied to real estate appraisal include more than a dozen big data types from three data sources; the internet, remote sensing, and the Internet of things (IoT). Additionally, it was determined that web crawler technology represents the most important data acquisition method. Second, methods such as data pre-processing, spatial modeling, Geographic information system (GIS) spatial analysis, and the evolving machine learning methods with higher valuation accuracy were successfully introduced into the HPM due to the features of real estate big data. Finally, although the application of big data has greatly expanded the amount of available data and feature dimensions, this has caused a new problem: uneven data quality. Uneven data quality can reduce the accuracy of appraisal results, and, to date, insufficient attention has been paid to this issue. Future research should pay greater attention to the data integration of multi-source big data and absorb the applications developed in other disciplines. It is also important to combine various methods to form a new united evaluation model based on taking advantage of, and avoiding shortcomings to compensate for, the mechanism defects of a single model.

A Vector Field Approach to Estimating Environmental Exposure Using Human Activity Data

Environmental exposure of people plays an important role in assessing the quality of human life. The most existing methods that estimate the environmental exposure either focus on the individual level or do not consider human mobility. This paper adopts a vector field generated from the observed locations of human activities to model the environmental exposure at the population level. An improved vector-field-generation method was developed by considering people’s decision-making factors, and we proposed two indicators, i.e., the total exposure indicator (TEI) and the average exposure indicator (AEI), to assess various social groups’ environmental exposure. A case study about the risky environmental exposure of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was conducted in Guangzhou, China. Over 900 participants with various socioeconomic backgrounds were involved in the questionnaire, and the survey-based activity locations were extracted to generate the vector field using the improved method. COVID-19 pandemic exposure (or risk) was estimated for different social groups. The findings show that people in the low-income group have an 8% to 10% higher risk than those in the high-income group. This new method of vector field may benefit geographers and urban researchers, as it provides opportunities to integrate human activities into the metrics of pandemic risk, spatial justice, and other environmental exposures.
