Occupational noise-induced hearing loss among dental personnel: a scoping review

Introduction Dental personnel are being exposed to noisy equipment on a daily basis and there are indications that dental professionals are at a higher risk of developing occupational noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). Therefore, this study aims to assess the available research on NIHL among dental professionals.Methods A total of 452 publications were identified through searches on PubMed and Web of Science. These studies were screened on title and abstract for studies that investigated NIHL among dental professionals using objective or subjective parameters for hearing loss. The remaining publications were then searched for relevant data, such as research type, parameters used for measuring hearing loss and authors' conclusions.Results In total, 28 publications were finally included in the selection. Of this selection, 23 used objective criteria for NIHL, three used subjective criteria and two used both. From the 12 studies with objective measurements that also included a control group in their studies, eight reported a significant higher hearing loss among dental personnel than in the control groups. From the 13 studies with objective measurement without a control group, seven reported significant hearing loss among dental personnel. All five studies with subjective measurements reported significant hearing loss in dental personnel.Conclusions Hearing loss seems to be more prevalent among dental personnel than in most control groups.

Systematic review of hearing loss in dental professionals

BACKGROUND

Hearing loss leads to increased irritability and disengagement in social activities and conversations, which may impact quality of life. Dental professionals are at risk of developing hearing loss through daily exposure to noise from a wide range of equipment that produces significantly high decibels and noise frequencies.

AIMS

The aim of this systematic review was to investigate the risk of hearing loss in dental professionals, including dentists, dental specialists, dental hygienists and dental assistants.

METHODS

This review was conducted following the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews. PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Cochrane, Science Direct, Google Scholar and ProQuest were searched up to March 2023. Seventeen of 416 studies met the inclusion criteria. Quality assessment was performed according to the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale for cohort and case-control studies, and a modified version of this tool for cross-sectional studies.

RESULTS

The majority of included studies (82%) found a positive association with hearing loss for dentists and dental specialists, with years of clinical experience identified as a prominent risk factor. Dental hygienists and dental assistants were less commonly reported in the literature. Difference between the left and right ears was found in 71% of studies, with the left ear more affected in both dentists and dental assistants due to proximity to the noise-inducing equipment.

CONCLUSIONS

Dental professionals are at risk of hearing loss in their workplace, especially linked to years of clinical experience, which highlights the need for prevention and appropriate ear-protective devices.

Tinnitus Prevalence and Associated Factors among Dental Clinicians in the United Arab Emirates

Dental clinicians are at increased risk for developing tinnitus due to exposure to high levels of occupational noise. This study aimed to determine tinnitus prevalence and associated factors among dental clinicians. Interviews were conducted with 150 randomly selected dental clinicians using a questionnaire. Noise levels were measured at three points of time at the operating area. Tinnitus was reported in 19.33% of the participants. The average noise level was significantly higher among participants with tinnitus compared to those without the condition. More participants complained of intermittent tinnitus and the rest had the constant type, with the latter being significantly more bothersome. The weekly average time of using high-speed handpieces, suction and electric handpieces, age and experience had a significant effect on the presence of tinnitus. Only 2.7% of the participants reported the use of a hearing protection device. Tinnitus is a common finding among dental clinicians especially those with higher levels of occupational noise and more frequent use of noise-generating equipment. Knowledge of tinnitus prevalence aids in realizing the extent of its impact and making informed decisions. These results call for improved awareness of the negative impact of clinically-generated noise and emphasize the importance of preventive measures and periodic audiometry exams.

The Effect of Sound in the Dental Office: Practices and Recommendations for Quality Assurance-A Narrative Review

Sound is inextricably linked to the human senses and is therefore directly related to the general health of the individual. The aim of the present study is to collect data on the effect of two dimensions of sound, music, and noise from an emotional and functional point of view in the dental office and to perform a thorough review of the relevant literature. We collected articles from the databases PubMed and Google Scholar through keywords that were related to noise and music in healthcare. Important information was also extracted from articles on the web and official websites. Screening of the relevant literature was performed according to accuracy and reliability of the methodology tested. A total of 261 articles were associated to sound and music in healthcare. Ninety-six of them were the most well documented and were thus included in our article. Most of the articles associate noise with negative emotions and a negative impact on performance, while music is associated with positive emotions ranging from emotional state to therapeutic approaches. Few results were found regarding ways to reduce noise in a health facility. If there is a difficulty to find effective methods of reducing the daily noise-inducing sounds in the dental office, we must focus on ways to incorporate music into it as a means of relaxation and therapy.
