Adaptive Compression and Reconstruction for Multidimensional Medical Image Data: A Hybrid Algorithm for Enhanced Image Quality

Spatial regions within images typically hold greater priority over adjacent areas, especially in the context of medical images (MI) where minute details can have significant clinical implications. This research addresses the challenge of compressing medical image dimensions without compromising critical information by proposing an adaptive compression algorithm. The algorithm integrates a modified image enhancement module, clustering-based segmentation, and a variety of lossless and lossy compression techniques. Edge enhancement contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization (EE-CLAHE) and 2D adaptive anisotropic diffusion filter are employed to enhance and denoise the images, followed by adaptive expectation maximization clustering (AEMC) for segmentation into regions of interest (ROI) and non-ROI. The clustering process is optimized utilizing fuzzy c-means (FCM) and Otsu thresholding. Subsequently, distinct compression schemes are applied to ROI and non-ROI regions, such as Coiflet + Haar, Coiflet + Daubecheis, modified SPIHT Huffman, EZW, and SPIHT algorithms, to ensure effective storage and transmission while preserving diagnostic details. Experimental results demonstrate that the combination of the modified SPIHT Huffman algorithm for ROI and EZW for non-ROI yields superior reconstruction quality across various measures, enabling comprehensive analysis of multi-dimensional images from MRI, CT, and X-ray modalities.

Machine learning for urban land use/ cover mapping: Comparison of artificial neural network, random forest and support vector machine, a case study of Dilla town

The ability to accurately classify land use/cover (LULC) is critical for environmental monitoring and land use planning. This study compares three machine learning algorithms: Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Random Forest (RF) for LULC classification using Google Earth images from the years 2006, 2014, and 2022. The objective of this study is to evaluate and identify the best classifier for LULC classification and change detection. Four LULC categories (Built-up, Open area, Farmland, and Agroforestry) were identified. The evaluation criteria included overall accuracy, kappa coefficient, producer's accuracy, user's accuracy, computing time, algorithm stability, and visual quality. The results showed that the RF algorithm outperformed both SVM and ANN algorithms with an average overall accuracy of 0.97, kappa coefficient of 0.98, producer's accuracy of 0.99, and user's accuracy of 0.97, surpassing the accuracies achieved by SVM (0.96, 0.97, 0.98, and 0.97) and ANN (0.89, 0.81, 0.94, and 0.88), with corresponding computing times of 6.33, 15, and 30 s. All classifiers performed stably with different training sizes. Visual quality assessment revealed that RF had the highest precision. Consequently, the built-up change detection result shows, the net change in built-up area between 2006 and 2022 was increased by 0.74 Km2 for ANN, 1.74 Km2 for SVM, and 1.66 Km2 for RF. The comparison reveals that the RF algorithm showcasing high precision in detecting change, consistent with the data (increased by 1.65 Km2 ) obtained from Dilla town land administration office. To validate the results, the study considered field surveys, reference images, local experts, and previous studies. Based on the findings, the study concludes that using RF classifier with an object-based approach is an effective way to map LULC and detect changes in the study area over time. Future researchers are recommended to utilize this effective algorithm for addressing LULC related problems in the study area.

Lossless Medical Image Compression by Using Difference Transform

This paper introduces a new method of compressing digital images by using the Difference Transform applied in medical imaging. The Difference Transform algorithm performs the decorrelation process of image data, and in this way improves the encoding process, achieving a file with a smaller size than the original. The proposed method proves to be competitive and in many cases better than the standards used for medical images such as TIFF or PNG. In addition, the Difference Transform can replace other transforms like Cosine or Wavelet.

Prospects of Structural Similarity Index for Medical Image Analysis

An image quality matrix provides a significant principle for objectively observing an image based on an alteration between the original and distorted images. During the past two decades, a novel universal image quality assessment has been developed with the ability of adaptation with human visual perception for measuring the difference of a degraded image from the reference image, namely a structural similarity index. Structural similarity has since been widely used in various sectors, including medical image evaluation. Although numerous studies have reported the use of structural similarity as an evaluation strategy for computer-based medical images, reviews on the prospects of using structural similarity for medical imaging applications have been rare. This paper presents previous studies implementing structural similarity in analyzing medical images from various imaging modalities. In addition, this review describes structural similarity from the perspective of a family’s historical background, as well as progress made from the original to the recent structural similarity, and its strengths and drawbacks. Additionally, potential research directions in applying such similarities related to medical image analyses are described. This review will be beneficial in guiding researchers toward the discovery of potential medical image examination methods that can be improved through structural similarity index.

An Ensembled Spatial Enhancement Method for Image Enhancement in Healthcare

Most medical images are low in contrast because adequate details that may prove vital decisions are not visible to the naked eye. Also, due to the low-contrast nature of the image, it is not easily segmented because there is no significant change between the pixel values, which makes the gradient very small Hence, the contour cannot converge on the edges of the object. In this work, we have proposed an ensembled spatial method for image enhancement. In this ensembled approach, we first employed the Laplacian filter, which highlights the areas of fast intensity variation. This filter can determine the sufficient details of an image. The Laplacian filter will also improve those features having shrill disjointedness. Then, the gradient of the image has been determined, which utilizes the surrounding pixels for the weighted convolution operation for noise diminishing. However, in the gradient filter, there is one negative integer in the weighting. The intensity value of the middle pixel might be deducted from the surrounding pixels, to enlarge the difference between the head-to-head pixels for calculating the gradients. This is one of the reasons due to which the gradient filter is not entirely optimistic, which may be calculated in eight directions. Therefore, the averaging filter has been utilized, which is an effective filter for image enhancement. This approach does not rely on the values that are completely diverse from distinctive values in the surrounding due to which it recollects the details of the image. The proposed approach significantly showed the best performance on various images collected in dynamic environments.
