Characterization, Spatial Variation and Management Strategy of Sewer Sediments Collected from Combined Sewer System: A Case Study in Longgang District, Shenzhen

Effects of flow rate and wastewater concentration on the transformation of nitrogen in sediment-water system of sewage pipelines

In this work, the transformation law of nitrogen in sediment-water system under different flow rates and wastewater concentrations were investigated in a simulated sewage pipeline system. Results showed that the different flow rates and wastewater concentrations in the pipeline caused differences in microbial community in sediments and nitrogen transformation. When the flow rate increased from 0.05 to 0.2 m/s, the scouring effect was enhanced, resulting in higher concentrations of NH4 + -N and NO3 - -N in the overlying water. At 0.2 m/s, the relative abundance of Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1 in sediments was higher, resulting in a greater conversion of amino acid nitrogen (AAN) to NH4 + -N. Meanwhile, many denitrifying bacteria (Trichococcus, Dechloromonas, norank_f__norank_o__Gaiellales, Thiobacillus) had high relative abundance in the sediments, and the denitrification process was common. When the wastewater concentration was high, the nitrification reaction was great in overlying and interstitial water. Moreover, the ammoniation process was great in the sediments, and the variation flux of AAN was large (remarkably reduced). PRACTITIONER POINTS: AAN transformed to NH4 + -N in sediment under different flow rate and concentration. Scouring was enhanced at 0.2 m/s, increasing nitrogen contents in overlying water. Difference in microbial community led to more AAN conversion to NH4 + -N at 0.2 m/s. The ammoniation process was greater in sediment at a high concentration of sewage. NH4 + -N migrated from overlying water to sediment at a high concentration of sewage.

Prediction of the roughness coefficient for drainage pipelines with sediments using GA-BPNN

Accurate prediction of the roughness coefficient of sediment-containing drainage pipes can help engineers optimize urban drainage systems. In this paper, the variation of the roughness coefficient of circular drainage pipes containing different thicknesses of sediments under different flows and slopes was studied by experimental measurements. Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN) and Genetic Algorithm-Back Propagation Neural Network (GA-BPNN) were used to predict the roughness coefficient. To explore the potential of artificial neural networks to predict the roughness coefficient, a formula based on drag segmentation was established to calculate the roughness coefficient. The results show that the variation trend of the roughness coefficient with flow, hydraulic radius, and Reynolds number is consistent. With the increase of the three parameters, the roughness coefficient decreases overall. Compared to the traditional empirical formula, the BPNN model and the GA-BPNN model increased the determination factors in the testing stage by 3.47 and 3.99%, respectively, and reduced the mean absolute errors by 41.18 and 47.06%, respectively. The study provides an intelligent method for accurate prediction of sediment-containing drainage pipes roughness coefficient.

A critical review of wastewater quality variation and in-sewer processes during conveyance in sewer systems

In-sewer physio-biochemical processes cause significant variations of wastewater quality during conveyance, which affects the influent to a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and arguably the microbial community of biological treatment units in a WWTP. In wet weather, contaminants stored in sewer deposits can be resuspended and migrate downstream or be released during combined sewer overflows to the urban water bodies, posing challenges to the treatment facilities or endangering urban water quality. Therefore, in-sewer transformation and migration of contaminants have been extensively studied. The compiled results from representative research in the past few decades showed that biochemical reactions are both cross-sectionally and longitudinally organized in the deposits and the sewage, following the redox potential as well as the sequence of macromolecule/contaminant degradation. The sewage organic contents and sewer biofilm microorganisms were found to covary but more systematic studies are required to examine the temporal stability of the feature. Besides, unique communities can be developed in the sewage phase. The enrichment of the major sewage-associated microorganisms can be explained by the availability of biodegradable organic contents in sewers. The sewer deposits, including biofilms, harbor both microorganisms and contaminants and usually can provide longer residence time for in-sewer transformation than wastewater. However, the interrelationships among contaminant transformation, microorganisms in the deposits/biofilms, and those in the sewage are largely unclear. Specifically, the formation and migration of FOG (fat, oil, and grease) deposits, generation and transport of contaminants in the sewer atmosphere (e.g., H₂S, CH₄, volatile organic compounds, bioaerosols), transport and transformation of nonconventional contaminants, such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products, and wastewater quality variation during the biofilm rehabilitation period after damages caused by rains/storms are some topics for future research. Moreover, systematic and standardized field analysis of real sewers under dynamic wastewater discharge conditions is necessary. We believe that an improved understanding of these processes would assist in sewer management and better prepare us for the challenges brought about by climate change and water shortage.
