Associations between workplace bullying, psychological capital, and organizational citizenship behavior: A meta-analysis with structural equation modeling

BACKGROUND

Workplace bullying depletes psychological resources, reducing job performance and organizational citizenship behavior. According to conservation of resources theory, psychological capital functions as a as a crucial psychological resource to influence the organizational citizenship behavior of employees who experience workplace bullying.

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to construct and validate a model of the associations between workplace bullying, psychological capital, and organizational citizenship behavior.

METHODS

Meta-analysis and structural equation modeling (MASEM) was employed to analyze 40 quantitative empirical studies.

RESULTS

Psychological capital was significantly and positively correlated with organizational citizenship behavior and significantly and negatively correlated with workplace bullying. However, organizational citizenship behavior was significantly and negatively correlated with workplace bullying, indicating heterogeneity among the variables. The total effects were as follows: workplace bullying negatively influenced psychological capital, psychological capital positively influenced organizational citizenship behavior, and workplace bullying negatively influenced organizational citizenship behavior. Psychological capital mediated the association between workplace bullying and organizational citizenship behavior.

CONCLUSIONS

Enterprises must address workplace bullying by establishing regulations and complaint channels. Additionally, they should prioritize recruiting employees with high psychological capital and develop employees' psychological capital to enhance workplace contributions and organizational citizenship behavior.

Research on the configuration of factors influencing safety citizenship behavior of construction workers based on fsQCA

Objectives. How to promote the safety citizenship behavior (SCB) of construction workers has been studied in academic circles. However, most current research methods focus on the 'net effect' between the independent variable and SCB. Methods and Results. Based on the fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) method and from the perspective of 'configuration', this article proposes that the emergence of SCB not only depends on a single condition, but also depends on the interaction of safety leadership behavior (SLB), organizational safety climate (OSC), organizational safety support (OSS), safety attitude (SA), safety motivation (SM), safety risk perception (SRP) and psychological belonging (PB). Conclusion. The research shows that the emergence of construction workers' SCB can be realized through different combinations of variables, and both 'external environment-driven' and 'interpersonal relationship-driven' paths can promote the generation of SCB. This research provides a more systematic and practical explanation for how to promote the generation of SCB of construction workers, expand the research scope of safety management and play a positive role in reducing the incidence of safety accidents in the construction industry.

The Influence Mechanism of Owners' Safety Management Behavior on Construction Workers' Safety Citizenship Behavior

The safety citizenship behavior (SCB) of construction workers can improve project safety performance. This study explored how construction company owners' safety management behavior contributes to the development and encouragement of SCB. It combined the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) and Stimulus-Organism-Response (SOR) theories to propose relevant hypotheses and develop a theoretical model to examine the effect of owners' safety management behavior on construction workers' SCB. Data from 534 construction workers were collected through questionnaires. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and the Structural Equation Model (SEM) were used for empirical analysis. It was found that the owner's safety management behavior positively affected the construction workers' SCB. In particular, work engagement played an intermediary role, while power distance exhibited a moderating effect. A few noteworthy findings are that proactive safety behavior is significantly positively influenced by organization and coordination, prosocial safety behavior is significantly positively influenced by safety funding investment, and high power distance is not always bad for construction workers' safety citizenship behavior. By determining the connection between owners' safety management behavior and construction workers' SCB, this study offered a fresh perspective on promoting construction workers' proactive behavior and put forward suggestions for owners to improve project safety management.

The influence of perceived Human Resource strength on safety performance among high-speed railway drivers: The role of organizational identification and psychological capital

INTRODUCTION

Under the Chinese railway system reform background, high-speed railway drivers face continuous organizational change. As a communication channel between organizations and employees, the implementation of Human Resource Management (HRM) requires urgent attention. The present study explored the impacts of perceived Human Resource (HR) strength on safety outcomes premised on social identity theory. The relationships among perceived HR strength, organizational identification, psychological capital, and safety performance were investigated.

METHOD

This study gathered 470 sets of paired data from Chinese high-speed railway drivers and their direct supervisors.

RESULTS

The results indicated that perceived HR strength positively affects safety performance via organizational identification, directly and indirectly. The findings also revealed that psychological capital promotes the direct effect of perceived HR strength on drivers' safety performance.

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS

Railway organizations were suggested to not only focus on the HR content but also consider the HR process, especially in an organizational change context.

Association of psychological symptoms with job burnout and occupational stress among coal miners in Xinjiang, China: A cross-sectional study

Objective

The study aimed to investigate the influencing factors of psychological symptoms in relation to job burnout and occupational stress among coal miners in Xinjiang, so as to provide data support for enterprises in an effort to help them identify internal psychological risk factors and improve the mental health of coal miners.

Methods

A cross-sectional study was carried out. A total of 12 coal mines were selected using the stratified cluster random sampling method and 4,109 coal miners were investigated by means of online electronic questionnaires. The Symptoms Check List-90 (SCL-90), Chinese Maslach Burnout Inventory (CMBI), and Job Demand-Control (JDC) model were respectively used to measure the status of psychological symptoms, job burnout, and occupational stress among coal miners. The mediation analysis was performed through structural equation modeling (SEM) by using Analysis of Moment Structure (AMOS).

Results

The prevalence of psychological symptoms was higher in the occupational stress group than in the non-occupational stress group, and increased with job burnout (P < 0.05). The multivariate logistic regression analysis results showed that mild (OR = 1.401, 95% CL: 1.165, 1.685), moderate (OR = 2.190, 95% CL: 1.795, 2.672), or severe levels of burnout (OR = 6.102, 95% CL: 3.481, 10.694) and occupational stress (OR = 1.462, 95% CL: 1.272, 1.679) were risk factors for psychological symptoms in coal miners. The results of structural equation modeling indicated that occupational stress (β = 0.11, P = 0.002) and job burnout (β = 0.46, P = 0.002) had significant positive direct effects on psychological symptoms, and job burnout was an intermediate variable between occupational stress and psychological symptoms.

Conclusion

High levels of job burnout and occupational stress were risk factors for psychological symptoms. Both occupational stress and job burnout had direct effects on psychological symptoms, and occupational stress could also have an indirect effect on coal miners' psychological symptoms through the intermediate variable of job burnout.
