Short-term effects of kinesiology taping on static and dynamic balance in healthy subjects

Background

As a therapeutic tool, kinesiology taping (KT) has become increasingly popular for musculoskeletal injuries utilized by physiotherapists. KT has been found to have effects on facilitating muscle strength by generating a concentric pull on the fascia. However, little is known about KT in the improvement of dynamic and static balance. This study aims to explore whether KT on the quadriceps muscle has any immediate effects on static and dynamic balance.

Methodology

Twenty-seven healthy individuals (13 males and 14 females, aged 22 to 29) were recruited in a crossover study with two conditions: KT and no taping. KT was applied to the quadriceps muscle for the taping group, with the control receiving no taping. Pre- and post-test measurements were taken to give an indication of the effect of the tape on balance performance. Center of Pressure Excursion (COPE) and Time to Stabilization (TTS) when landing from a hop test and Y Balance test combined score (YBTCS) were used to assess a stabilizing balance activity and a dynamic balance. The pre- and post-intervention were collected, with differences explored using repeated measures ANOVA with time and condition (tape) factor analysis.

Results

We found a significant improvement (p ≤ 0.05) with a moderate to large effect size in YBTCS between KT and no taping, indicating enhanced balance performance in the KT group. However, no significant difference (p ≥ 0.05) with small to moderate effect size was found in COPE or TTS between the two conditions during landing tests, suggesting similar balance capabilities in these specific measures.

Conclusion

The use of KT shows no significant immediate effect on static balance in healthy individuals when applied to the quadriceps muscles; however, it demonstrates a positive immediate effect on dynamic balance.

Mid-term effects of two different Kinesio tape treatments in female patients with subacromial impingement syndrome: Randomized controlled ultrasonographic study

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

To evaluate the effect of Kinesio Tape (KT) applied differently in patients diagnosed with Subacromial Impingement Syndrome (SIS) on acromiohumeral distance (AHD) and supraspinatus tendon (SsT) thickness using ultrasound (US) and its effect on pain, upper limb functional status and hand grip muscle strength in the short and mid-term.

METHODS

The 90 patients diagnosed with unilateral SIS by clinical examination were randomized into 3 groups. In addition to exercise therapy, the deltoid in group 1 and the supraspinatus muscle in group 2 were taped from insertion to origin. Group 3, which was the control group, was applied 9 sessions of sham taping for 3 weeks. Cases were evaluated for AHD and SsT thickness, pain was evaluated with the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), function with the Disabilities of the arm, shoulder and hand (DASH) and the Western Ontario Rotator Cuff Index (WORC), and hand grip strength (HGS) using a dynamometer before, and 3rd week and 3rd month after the KT application.

RESULTS

There was a significant improvement in all parameters in the short and mid-term intra group comparisons in Group 1 and 2 after taping (P < .05). In intergroup comparisons, significant improvement was achieved in all parameters in Group 1 and Group 2 in the mid and short term compared to the control group (P < .05). In comparison of Group 1 and Group 2, HGS in the short term (p: 0.07) and the SsT thickness in the short and mid-term (p: 0.36, p: 0.85) did not exhibit any difference. The improvement in all other parameters in group 1 was statistically significant.

CONCLUSION

The findings of our study provide definitive evidence for the effectiveness of KT treatment depending on the method of tape application employed.

Effects of Kinesio Taping and Rigid Taping on Gluteus Medius Muscle Activation in Healthy Individuals: A Randomized Controlled Study

BACKGROUND

Gluteus medius muscle (GMed) dysfunctions may be associated with pain and functional problems in the lumbar spine and lower limbs. The study sought to assess the effects of applying kinesio taping (KT) and rigid taping (RT) on GMed in the dominant leg of healthy individuals. Furthermore, an attempt was made to indicate which of the applied exercises brought about the greatest activation of GMed.

METHODS

The study included 90 individuals, with an average age of 21.79. The participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups: kinesio tape (KT), rigid tape (RT) and placebo tape (C). GMed activation was assessed using sEMG during the performance of such exercises as glute bridge, unilateral glute bridge, clamshell, pelvic drop and lunge. Each of the participants was examined three times-before taping, immediately after and 48 h after taping.

RESULTS

Before taping, the greatest GMed activation on the dominant side was noted in clamshell (54.12 %MVIC), whereas the lowest GMed activation was observed in glute bridge (36.35 %MVIC). The comparison of results obtained before and immediately after taping in all the groups revealed a statistically significant increase in GMed activation (p < 0.05), while the comparison of results achieved before and 48 h after taping showed significant differences in glute bridge in groups KT and RT. In all the groups, the differences in results obtained in the other exercises were not significant. Taking into account each of the applied exercises, at none of the three stages of examination were the differences between the groups significant.

CONCLUSIONS

Regardless of the type of taping applied (KT, RT, C), a significant increase in GMed activation was noted in all the exercises immediately after taping. At none of the stages of examination were the differences between the groups significant.
