Abstract
OBJECTIVES Rumination is a maladaptive emotion regulation strategy. It has been associated with several psychological disorders and physical problems. This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate whether cognitive rumination is associated with periodontal disease (PD), tooth loss (TL), and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). MATERIALS AND METHODS A population-based sample from a rural area in southern Brazil was evaluated. Calibrated examiners carried out a complete periodontal examination at six sites-per-tooth. Rumination and Reflection (RRQ) and Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) questionnaires were administered. Regression modeling was used to assess the prevalence ratio (PR) between rumination and PD and to estimate the rate ratio (RR) between rumination and TL and rumination and OHIP. RESULTS Severe periodontitis prevalence of 33% was observed in the sample. In the Poisson-adjusted model (n = 587), individuals who ruminate more have 27% more periodontal disease (PR: 1.27, 95%CI:1.02 - 1.60). Regarding TL and OHIP, negative binomial regression (n = 672) showed an association with rumination, but it was not significant (RR 1.14, 95%CI 0.99 - 1.31) and (RR 1.20, 95%CI 0.98 - 1.48), respectively. CONCLUSIONS Cognitive rumination was independently associated with periodontal disease in individuals living in a rural area. Borderline non-significant estimates were observed regarding TL and OHRQoL. More research using different populations and focusing on individual's responses to psychological stress may confirm these results. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Emotional regulation is crucial to deal with stress, anxiety, and depression. Since psychopathologies are among the most prevalent diseases in the world, it is critical to understand the role of these issues in dental outcomes.

Abstract
AIM This study was undertaken to evaluate the risk factors and associated pathways for unmet dental prosthetic needs among older adult population in Central India. METHODS A total of 11,145 randomly selected older adults participated in the study; 4613 from urban region and 6532 form rural region. Oral examinations were conducted at individual households for recording dental caries, periodontal disease, prosthetic status and needs. Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) was used to examine relationship between a set of exogenous variables and unmet dental prosthetic needs with variables that remained significant in the adjusted multilevel logistic model. Path coefficients were calculated for all variables with 95% confidence interval. Goodness of fit of the model was assessed by several indices. RESULTS A total of 8433 (75.7%) participants had never visited a dentist and 9139 (82%) had unmet dental prosthetic needs. Dental caries was observed among 3207 (69.5%) and 4644 (71.1%) study participants from urban and rural regions respectively (p < .05). Low utilization of dental services was associated with high dental prosthetic needs in upper arch and lower arch (PC = -0.05, 0.001) and DMFT was associated with lower utilization of dental services (PC = -0.09, 0.001). DMFT was also associated with age, annual income, level of education, paternal education, type of family, tobacco consumption and CPI score in the hypothesized model. The fit indices used indicated that the model was adequate. CONCLUSIONS Dental prosthetic needs in the proposed pathway model was associated with low utilization of dental services, dental caries, periodontal disease and other socio-demographic factors.

Abstract
Objectives This study aimed to evaluate the agreement between self-reported and clinically measured numbers of teeth in older adults from Almadinah Almunawwarah, KSA, and to identify factors associated with self-reporting accuracy. Methods This study included 337 older adults (≥60 years). Participants completed a survey assessing sociodemographic characteristics, self-rated oral and general health, and the self-reported number of teeth. Clinical examination was conducted using the 2013 criteria published by the World Health Organization. Bland-Altman plots and correlation coefficients were used to assess the agreement between self-reported and clinically measured teeth. Results The mean age of the study participants was 67.1 (SD = 6.5) years, and the majority were males (71.2%). The self-reported teeth count was higher than the clinically measured number, and only 47.7% (n = 161) of the sample showed complete agreement between the two measures. The mean difference between the self-reported and clinically recorded number of teeth was 0.41 teeth, and almost two-thirds of the study participants reported their number of teeth within an error margin of two teeth (p < 0.001). Both Spearman's and Pearson's correlation methods revealed a significant positive correlation between the two measures. Specifically, the Spearman's rho was 0.91, while Pearson's r coefficient was 0.96. Conclusion Among Saudi older adults, the self-reported number of teeth correlated with the clinically measured numbers of teeth. This suggests that self-reports can be a reliable and cost-effective method for assessing oral health in large-scale surveys, potentially guiding health policies and interventions for older adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The obesity epidemic brought a need for accessible methods to monitor body composition, as excess adiposity has been associated with cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders, and some cancers. Recent 3-dimensional optical (3DO) imaging advancements have provided opportunities for assessing body composition. However, the accuracy and precision of an overall 3DO body composition model in specific subgroups are unknown. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to evaluate 3DO's accuracy and precision by subgroups of age, body mass index, and ethnicity. METHODS A cross-sectional analysis was performed using data from the Shape Up! Adults study. Each participant received duplicate 3DO and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans. 3DO meshes were digitally registered and reposed using Meshcapade. Principal component analysis was performed on 3DO meshes. The resulting principal components estimated DXA whole-body and regional body composition using stepwise forward linear regression with 5-fold cross-validation. Duplicate 3DO and DXA scans were used for test-retest precision. Student's t tests were performed between 3DO and DXA by subgroup to determine significant differences. RESULTS Six hundred thirty-four participants (females = 346) had completed the study at the time of the analysis. 3DO total fat mass in the entire sample achieved R2 of 0.94 with root mean squared error (RMSE) of 2.91 kg compared to DXA in females and similarly in males. 3DO total fat mass achieved a % coefficient of variation (RMSE) of 1.76% (0.44 kg), whereas DXA was 0.98% (0.24 kg) in females and similarly in males. There were no mean differences for total fat, fat-free, percent fat, or visceral adipose tissue by age group (P > 0.068). However, there were mean differences for underweight, Asian, and Black females as well as Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islanders (P < 0.038). CONCLUSIONS A single 3DO body composition model produced accurate and precise body composition estimates that can be used on diverse populations. However, adjustments to specific subgroups may be warranted to improve the accuracy in those that had significant differences. Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to show the usefulness of incorporating a community-based geographical information system (GIS) in recruiting research participants for the Asian Cohort for Alzheimer's Disease (ACAD) study for using the subgroup of Korean American (KA) older adults. The ACAD study is the first large study in the USA and Canada focusing on the recruitment of Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese older adults to address the issues of under-representation of Asian Americans in clinical research. METHODS To promote clinical research participation of racial/ethnic minority older adults with and without dementia, we used GIS by collaborating with community members to delineate boundaries for geographical clusters and enclaves of church and senior networks, and KA serving ethnic clinics. In addition, we used socioeconomic data identified as recruitment factors unique to KA older adults which was analysed for developing recruitment strategies. RESULTS GIS maps show a visualisation of the heterogeneity of the sociodemographic characteristics and the resources of faith-based organisations and KA serving local clinics. We addressed these factors that disproportionately affect participation in clinical research and successfully recruited the intended participants (N=60) in the proposed period. DISCUSSION Using GIS maps to locate KA provided innovative inroads to successful research outreach efforts for a pilot study that may be expanded to other underserved populations across the USA in the future. We will use this tool subsequently on a large-scale clinical genetic epidemiology study. POLICY IMPLICATION This approach responds to the call from the National Institute on Aging to develop strategies to improve the health status of older adults in diverse populations. Our study will offer a practical guidance to health researchers and policymakers in identifying understudied and hard-to-reach specific Asian American populations for clinical studies or initiatives. This would further contribute in reducing the health and research disparity gaps among older minority populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic health conditions and socioeconomic problems that affect the well-being and life expectancy of older adults are common. The objective of this cross-sectional study was to analyze the association between sociodemographic variables, oral conditions, and general health and the biomarkers of older adults using machine learning (ML). METHODS A total of 15,068 surveys from the national study of Health, Well-Being and Aging (Salud, Bienestar y Envejecimiento) data set were used for this secondary analysis. Of these, 3,128 people provided blood samples for the analysis of blood biomarkers. Sociodemographic, oral health, and general health variables were analyzed using ML and logistic regression. RESULTS The results of clustering analysis showed that dyslipidemia was associated with poor oral condition, lower socioeconomic status, being female, and low education. The self-perception of oral health in older adults was not associated with the presence of teeth, blood biomarkers, or socioeconomic variables. However, the necessity of replacing a dental prosthesis was associated with the lowest self-perception of oral health. Edentulism was associated with being female, increased age, and smoking. CONCLUSIONS Socioeconomic and educational disparities, sex, and smoking are important factors for tooth loss and suboptimal blood biomarkers in older adults. ML is a powerful tool for identifying potential variables that may aid in the prevention of systemic and oral diseases in older adults, which would improve geriatric dentistry. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS These findings can help the academic community identify critical sociodemographic and clinical factors that influence the process of healthy aging and serve as a useful guide to enhance health care policies and geriatric oral health care services.

Abstract
The proportion aged 60 years or older in the world's population is expected to double by 2050. In general, they have many complex diseases and poor oral health status. Oral health is one of the important health indicators of elderly people and it is affected by diverse factors, such as socioeconomic status. In this study, sexual difference was considered as an associated factor that is closely related to edentulism. The sexual difference might be more influential within the geriatric population because of lower economic and educational backgrounds at this stage. Edentulism was significantly higher among elderly females than males when combined with the education level. The lower the level of education, the higher the prevalence of edentulism as much as 24 ~ 28 times, especially in females (P = 0.002). These findings suggest a more complex relationship between oral health, socioeconomic status, and sexual difference.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tooth loss is a known marker of oral and systemic health, but large-scale population-based and cross-sectional multi-year comparative studies on tooth loss have yet to be much studied in China. This study explores the changing trends in tooth loss status and the associated factors influencing the prevalence of tooth loss over the past two decades in Guangdong, Southern China. METHODS Data from three cross-sectional, representative oral epidemiological surveys in Guangdong Province were analyzed, including 400 in 1995, 720 in 2005, and 288 in 2015, for a total of 1408 participants. Sample selection is based on the National Census of China published by the National Bureau of Statistics. In this study, each year, the number of missing teeth (MT) and the prevalence of tooth loss (MT > 0) were calculated. Basic demographic information, socioeconomic status, caries and periodontal status, personal lifestyle factors, and dental health care behaviors were analyzed by multivariate logistic regression to estimate their associations with tooth loss. Statistical significance was evaluated with 2-sided tests with a significance level of P < 0.05. RESULTS This study found that the mean number of missing teeth and the prevalence of tooth loss among adults aged 35-44 years in Guangdong Province did not change significantly in the first decade (1995-2005) but decreased significantly in the second decade (2005-2015) (0.94 and 40.8% in 1995, 0.99 and 42.9% in 2005, and 0.63 and 33.3% in 2015, respectively). The mean number of MT by tooth position was highest for the first and second molars, and both were larger in the mandible than in the maxilla. In 1995, populations with low educational attainment and the presence of caries or periodontal pocket (periodontal probing depth ≥ 4 mm) were associated with a higher chance of MT > 0. In 2005, those with low educational attainment, the presence of caries, and 40-44 years old were associated with a higher chance of MT > 0. Moreover, in 2015, females, rural residents, and those with caries or periodontal pocket were associated with a higher chance of MT > 0. CONCLUSIONS Although tooth retention has improved recently (2005-2015) and the preventive effect of education level on tooth loss has increased over time, efforts to prevent tooth loss in adults need to be strengthened. Particular attention should be given to preventive interventions for women, rural residents, and those suffering from caries or periodontal pocket.

Abstract
Dental calculus preserves oral microbes, enabling comparative studies of the oral microbiome and health through time. However, small sample sizes and limited dental health metadata have hindered health-focused investigations to date. Here, we investigate the relationship between tobacco pipe smoking and dental calculus microbiomes. Dental calculus from 75 individuals from the 19th century Middenbeemster skeletal collection (Netherlands) were analyzed by metagenomics. Demographic and dental health parameters were systematically recorded, including the presence/number of pipe notches. Comparative data sets from European populations before and after the introduction of tobacco were also analyzed. Calculus species profiles were compared with oral pathology to examine associations between microbiome community, smoking behavior, and oral health status. The Middenbeemster individuals exhibited relatively poor oral health, with a high prevalence of periodontal disease, caries, heavy calculus deposits, and antemortem tooth loss. No associations between pipe notches and dental pathologies, or microbial species composition, were found. Calculus samples before and after the introduction of tobacco showed highly similar species profiles. Observed interindividual microbiome differences were consistent with previously described variation in human populations from the Upper Paleolithic to the present. Dental calculus may not preserve microbial indicators of health and disease status as distinctly as dental plaque.

Abstract
Background Half of US adults aged 20–64 years have lost at least one permanent tooth; one in six adults aged 65 and over in the USA is edentulous. Tooth loss and edentulism interfere with nutritional intake and quality of life. Although selected chronic diseases (e.g., diabetes) have been identified as possible risk factors for tooth loss, data on multiple chronic diseases and on having two or more concurrent chronic diseases (multimorbidity) in relation to tooth loss are lacking. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the association between multiple chronic diseases, multimorbidity, and tooth loss in US adults. Methods We performed a secondary data analysis using the US 2012 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), a national cross-sectional telephone survey studying health conditions and health behaviors among US adults (≥18 years) who are non-institutionalized residents. Variables were derived from the BRFSS Standard Core Questionnaire. Descriptive analysis including means, standard deviations (SDs), and percentages was calculated. Sample weights were applied. The stepwise multinomial logistic regression method was used to examine the relationship between several chronic diseases and tooth loss. Separate multinomial logistic regression models were used to examine the relationship between multimorbidity and tooth loss among all adults aged more than 18 years, adults aged 18–64 years, and adults aged more than 65 years, respectively. Results Among the samples (n = 471,107, mean age 55 years, 60% female), 55% reported losing no tooth loss, 30% reported losing one to five teeth, 10% reported losing six or more but not all teeth, and 5% reported losing all teeth. After adjusting for demographic characteristics, socioeconomic status, smoking, BMI, and dental care, chronic diseases that were associated with edentulism were chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) [adjusted risk ratio (adj. RR) 2.18, 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.08–2.29]; diabetes (adj. RR 1.49, 95% CI 1.44–1.56); arthritis (adj. RR 1.49, 95% CI 1.44–1.54); cardiovascular disease (adj. RR 1.38, 95% CI 1.30–1.45); stroke (adj. RR 1.31, 95% CI 1.24–1.40); kidney disease (adj. RR 1.16, 95% CI 1.08–1.25); cancer (adj. RR 1.05, 95% CI 1.01–1.11); and asthma (adj. RR 1.07, 95% CI 1.02–1.12). For those who reported losing six or more teeth, the association remained significant for all the chronic diseases mentioned, albeit the magnitude of association appeared to be comparative or smaller. In addition, adults with multimorbidity were more likely to have tooth loss (loss of one to five teeth: adj. RR 1.17, 95% CI 1.14–1.19; loss of six or more teeth: adj. RR 1.78, 95% CI 1.73–1.82; edentulous: adj. RR 2.03, 95% CI 1.96–2.10). Conclusions Multiple chronic diseases were associated with edentulism and tooth loss. People with multimorbidity are more likely to be edentulous than those with one or no chronic disease. The findings from this study will help to identify populations at increased risk for oral problems and nutritional deficits, thus the assessment of oral health should be evaluated further as an important component of chronic illness care.
