Subjective Changes in Tobacco Product Use among Korean Adults during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Assessment of toxicological validity using tobacco emission condensates: A comparative analysis of emissions and condensates from 3R4F reference cigarettes and heated tobacco products

The tobacco emission condensate, henceforth referred to as "tobacco condensate," plays a critical role in assessing the toxicity of tobacco products. This condensate, derived from tobacco emissions, provides an optimized liquid concentrate for storage and concentration control. Thus, the validation of its constituents is vital for toxicity assessments. This study used tobacco condensates from 3R4F cigarettes and three heated tobacco product (HTP) variants to quantify and contrast organic compounds (OCs) therein. The hazard index (HI) for tobacco emissions and condensates was determined to ascertain the assessment validity. The total particulate matter (TPM) for 3R4F registered at 17,667 μg cig-1, with its total OC (TOC) at 3777 μg cig-1. HTPs' TPM and TOC were 9342 ± 1918 μg cig-1 and 5258 ± 593 μg stick-1, respectively. 3R4F's heightened TPM likely arises from tar, while HTPs' OC concentrations are influenced by vegetable glycerin (2236-2688 μg stick-1) and propylene glycol (589-610 μg stick-1). During the condensation process, a substantial proportion of OCs in 3R4F smoke underwent significant concentration decreases, in contrast to HTPs, where fewer than half of the examined OCs exhibited notable concentration declines. The HI for tobacco emissions exhibited a marginally higher value compared to tobacco condensate, with variations ranging from 7.92% (HTPs) to 18.6% (3R4F), denoting a minimal differential. These observations emphasize the importance of accurate OC recovery techniques to maintain the validity and reliability of toxicity assessments based on tobacco condensates. This study not only deepens the comprehension of chemical behaviors in tobacco products but also establishes a novel benchmark for their toxicity evaluation, with profound implications for public health strategies and consumer protection.

Comparison of attempts and plans to quit tobacco products among single, dual, and triple users

INTRODUCTION

Tobacco users are categorized as single, dual, and triple users based on the number of tobacco products (cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and heated tobacco products) used. This study addressed a literature gap by examining how adult Korean tobacco users' quit attempts/plans differed based on the user type, and the associated psychosocial and subjective health-related factors.

METHODS

We used a questionnaire to examine participants' self-reported health, stress, health concerns, health behavior, tobacco addiction, intentions/plans to quit, and demographic characteristics. Data were analyzed using chi-squared tests, one-way analysis of variance, and multiple linear regression.

RESULTS

Of the 1288 tobacco users, 55.4%, 28.3%, and 16.4% were single, dual, and triple users, respectively. Self-rated health and stress were lowest among single users and highest among triple users. Most user types had intentions/plans to quit, especially triple users. Quit attempts and plans increased with increasing health behaviors and time elapsed before first tobacco use in the morning, but decreased with higher stress and self-rated addiction.

CONCLUSIONS

Intentions/plans to quit tobacco use varied based on the type of tobacco user. Multiple users had higher self-rated health, plans to quit, and self-reported addiction; they considered themselves healthy or engaged in healthy behaviors to offset problems from tobacco use and used multiple tobacco products to quit smoking. Highly stressed users had fewer plans to quit and used tobacco for stress relief. Thus, the provision of accurate information about tobacco products and stress management is important to promote successful quitting.

Factors affecting tobacco, nicotine, and cannabis product use among California young adults during the COVID-19 pandemic: A qualitative study

The effects of COVID-19 on tobacco use and cannabis has been variable, and it is unclear the extent to which factors affecting changes in tobacco and cannabis use differ. The purpose of this study was to identify the COVID-19-related factors that affect changes in tobacco and cannabis use during the pandemic. Focus groups with 114 young adults in California in April 2021 were held to discuss tobacco and cannabis use patterns, adverse events, and the effect of COVID-19 on tobacco and cannabis product use. Factors affecting changes in use were largely similar between tobacco products and cannabis products. Drivers of increased cannabis use distinct from tobacco or nicotine product use included feeling greater freedom to disengage and perceptions of less harm. Increases in product use were a result of changing social environment, coping with emotional and psychological distress, and product related factors. Decreases in product use were a result of social isolation, COVID-19-related health concerns, disruptions in daily patterns of living, and reduced access. Improved understanding of how the pandemic has affected tobacco and cannabis use can inform tailored interventions to both support those who have decreases or quit and assist those who have increased use during the pandemic to reduce or cease their consumption.

The Frequency of Tobacco Smoking and E-Cigarettes Use among Primary Health Care Patients-The Association between Anti-Tobacco Interventions and Smoking in Poland

The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of smoking and e-cigarette use among primary care patients during the COVID-19 pandemic and to assess the frequency of minimal anti-tobacco interventions by family doctors. A cross-sectional study was conducted from January 2020 to December 2021 encompassing 896 patients over 18 years of age who used primary health care in the city of Lodz, Poland. In total, 21.2% of the respondents were smokers, 11.6% were e-cigarette users, and 7.3% dual users. In addition, 68.4% of smokers had been asked about smoking, while 62.9% of non-smokers and 33.7% of smokers were advised to quit smoking; furthermore, 71.1% of e-cigarette users and 72.3% of dual users were asked about tobacco use, and 17.3% and 21.5%, respectively, had been advised to quit smoking. Multivariate logistic regression analysis found men and alcohol users to receive more minimal anti-tobacco advice than women and non-alcohol users (OR = 1.46; p < 0.05 and OR = 1.45; p < 0.05), socio-demographic and health correlates did not increase the chances of obtaining minimal anti-tobacco interventions among smokers. People with a medium level of education had a higher chance of receiving minimal anti-tobacco intervention from their family doctor when using e-cigarettes and when they were dual users (OR = 2.06; p < 0.05 and OR = 2.51; p < 0.05). Smokers were less likely to receive minimal anti-tobacco interventions than reported in previous studies. Measures should be implemented to increase the minimum interventions provided by GPs in their daily work among all patients, not only those who use tobacco. Non-smokers should be encouraged to abstain.
