Interrelationship between subjective wellbeing and health

BACKGROUND

Subjective wellbeing (SWB) and health are important facets of any person's life, and they tend to influence each other. This importance is reflected in the vastness of literature aiming to explore this association. However, most of this literature is based on sampling national population which may present different population characteristics to those of a province. Thus, the paper aims to investigate if the association between perceived health and SWB is moderated by population characteristics at a provincial level. We intend to add value to subjective wellbeing and health literature by reviewing the relationship between SWB and health in the Eastern Cape stratified by age, gender, rural and urban and different income classifications.

METHODS

Different population characteristics tend to associate to subjective wellbeing and health differently, therefore influencing how these two variables influence each other. Thus, the paper aims to investigate if the association between perceived health and SWB is moderated by population characteristics at a provincial level. Utilising the South African National Income Dynamics Survey from 2008 to 2017, this study examined the relationship between subjective wellbeing and health using a random effects model stratified according to aforementioned population characteristics.

RESULTS

A better perceived health status is associated with higher subjective wellbeing. A better subjective wellbeing is also associated with a higher health status. Determinants of subjective wellbeing and health associate with these variables differently besides income and employment which led to higher subjective wellbeing and health. Health associates to subjective wellbeing different across populations characteristics.

CONCLUSION

Subjective wellbeing and health are interdependent as reflected in the World Health Organisation (WHO) and United Nation (UN) statements. Higher income and level of education and being employed is associated with both higher SWB and health. Therefore, improving these economic outcomes maybe associated with an improvement in well-being and health as desired by WHO and UN. Provinces differ, and different population characteristics tend to associate with subjective wellbeing and health differently, therefore influencing how these two variables influence each other. Health improvement policies must consider subjective wellbeing. Well-being improvement policies need to be cognisant of the differences in provincial and population characteristics.

Role of subjective well-being and resilience in the relationship between hopelessness and suicidal ideation among older adults with moderate to severe ADL limitations in Chinese nursing homes

PURPOSE

Hopelessness is a risk factor for suicidal ideation, whereas subjective well-being and resilience are protective factors. Nevertheless, the complicated mechanism underlying these factors has not been fully investigated among older people with moderate to severe ADL limitations in nursing homes. This cross-sectional study investigated the potential role of resilience in mediating the relationship between hopelessness and suicidal ideation as well as whether subjective well-being can moderate this mediating effect.

METHODS

Older individuals (N = 332; aged ≥ 65 years; 158 males, 174 females) with moderate to severe ADL limitations from 10 nursing homes in Chongqing, China, completed this cross-sectional study from July to December 2022. Hopelessness, resilience, subjective well-being and suicidal ideation were measured. The mediating and moderating effects were explored via regression analysis with bootstrap methods.

RESULTS

A total of 32.8 % (109/332) of the participants reported current suicidal ideation. The relationship between suicidal ideation and hopelessness was partly influenced by resilience (indirect effect = 0.13, 95 % CI = 0.07∼.20). Subjective well-being moderated the impact of resilience on suicidal ideation (moderating effect = 0.01, 95 % CI = 0.00∼.01) and indirectly impacted the effect of hopelessness on suicidal ideation.

CONCLUSION

These results emphasize the importance of resilience and subjective well-being in mitigating suicidal ideation, which is a prevalent issue among older adults residing in nursing homes with moderate to severe ADL limitations in China.

Does Subjective Well-Being Improve Self-Rated Health from Undergraduate Studies to Three Years after Graduation in China?

The health status of emerging adults is at risk. Although subjective well-being is one of the factors closely associated with health, their longitudinal relationship is not clear among emerging adults. The study aimed to investigate the prospective relationship between self-rated health and subjective well-being in emerging adults. The study collected longitudinal data from a total of 1021 Chinese college students (537 males and 484 females) for five years, including two years in college and three years after graduation. In the baseline survey, the average age of the sample was 21.57 years old. Descriptive statistics indicated that both self-rated health and subjective well-being significantly decreased from the senior year of college to the year after graduation. Correlation analysis revealed that self-rated health and subjective well-being had a significant positive relationship. In the five-wave random intercept cross-lagged panel model, subjective well-being unidirectionally predicted self-rated health. In other words, the subjective well-being in the previous year could positively predict self-rated health in the following year, but the previous self-rated health could not predict subsequent subjective well-being. Given the significance of emerging adulthood to individual development, more attention and care should be dedicated to improving subjective well-being so as to maintain good health and engagement in work.

Inflammatory myopathy in adults, health-related quality of life, and wellbeing: a round trip between immune disease and wellness

INTRODUCTION

Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and wellbeing are poorer in patients with chronic conditions than in the general population, and this is the case of individuals with myositis. Research has shown a negative relationship between this disease and wellbeing, but there is little data on the effect that enhanced wellbeing has on the disease course.

AREAS COVERED

HRQoL, wellbeing, and other related concepts are examined here with special emphasis on the benefits of positive status in the physical, environmental, psychological, and social function areas for reducing the severity of the clinical course and organ damage in a chronic condition such as myositis. The factors affecting HRQoL, and wellbeing are analyzed to delineate specific strategies that will lead to improvements in the life of adult patients with myositis. The mechanisms implicated in these changes are also discussed.

EXPERT OPINION

Myositis refers to a heterogeneous group of chronic systemic autoimmune diseases. HRQoL and wellbeing are poor in these patients, and evidence suggests that improvements in this line can have positive repercussions on the course and outcome of the disease. Strategies to improve HRQoL and wellbeing should be designed for adults with myositis.

Multi-Dimensional Comparison of the Impact Mechanism of the Self-Rated Health Status of Urban and Rural Residents in Chinese Social Environments

Self-rated health status (SRHS) reflects individuals' social environment, and the difference between urban and rural areas in China further highlights the impact of social environment on health. This paper aimed to systematically analyze and compare the impact mechanism of the SRHS of urban and rural residents from multiple dimensions, i.e., time, space, and scale. Drawing on data from the Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS) and China Statistical Yearbook, we used spatial, cross, and HLM analyses. Results indicate that: (1) From 2010 to 2017, the overall SRHS level of Chinese residents gradually declined; the gradient pattern of east, middle, and west became more marked, and the health level in rural areas generally fell behind that of urban areas. (2) The focus of SRHS moved toward mental health, and people's perceptions of the social environment gradually became a key factor affecting health. (3) In the long term, the gradient allocation of medical service resources could narrow the gap between urban and rural areas to comprehensively improve regional health levels.
