The dynamic relationship among green logistics, technological innovation and green economy: Evidence from China

Under the background of "double carbon", exploring the growth path of green logistics and enhancing the driving force of technological innovation is the urgent need of our country to comply with the green transformation of its economy and realize high-quality economic growth. Taking the panel data of 30 Chinese provinces from 2010 to 2020 as the sample, the green logistics index evaluation system is constructed based on the driver-press-state-impact-response (DPSIR) theoretical framework, and the green economic efficiency of each province in the sample period is measured by using the non-expected output Super- Slacks-based measure (SBM) model, and by constructing the panel vector autoregressive (PVAR) model including technological innovation is used to systematically elaborate the dynamic influence paths among the three. The study found that: China's green economy, technological innovation, and green logistics all have their own mechanisms for growth, which will gradually diminish over time. In the near and long term, green logistics will promote technological innovations and the evolution of a green economy, but there is a lag in the long-term benefits of green logistics on technological progress. In the short term, technological innovation does not lend support to the growth of a green economy, but over time, the impact of technological innovation on the growth of that economy will shift from negative to positive. This shows that improving technological innovation capability is an important path for green logistics to promote green economic efficiency. The findings of the study provide a basis for decision making to achieve the emission reduction target and improve the efficiency of the green economy.

Innovation, advertising, personal selling, and sustainability in the industries massively benefited from major public health emergencies: paradoxical evidence from China

Background

While major public health emergencies have severe socio-economic impacts, they may also present many opportunities for certain industries. For these industries that have benefited significantly (e.g., China' s healthcare industry), the traditional emphasis on improving business performance through increased investment in innovation, marketing and sustainability may face contextual applicability challenges.

Methods

We used the data of healthcare industry in China during Covid-19 and the methods of hierarchical regression, moderating effect test to analyze the impact of innovation, advertising, personal selling, and sustainability on healthcare firms' profitability. Three kinds of robust test including increasing the measurement range of variables, changing the data source and parameter estimation method, and Quantile regression are used.

Results

This paper finds that innovation, advertising, and environmental sustainability have significant negative impacts on profitability, while personal selling, social sustainability, and governance sustainability have significant positive impacts on profitability in the industries massively benefited from major public health emergencies. Besides, social sustainability can significantly moderate the relationship between innovation and profitability.

Conclusion

On one hand, for companies in industries that have benefited greatly from major public health emergencies, a shift in resource allocation from innovation, advertising, and environmental sustainability to personal selling, social sustainability, and governance sustainability may be more conducive to improving their profitability. On the other hand, for public health regulatory authorities, it is necessary to strengthen the supervision of sales representatives of health care enterprises, hospitals, public health organizations, etc., and appropriately subsidize the innovation of enterprises to enhance their innovation motivation.

Ecological Civilization and High-Quality Development: Do Tourism Industry and Technological Progress Affect Ecological Economy Development?

The tourism industry is considered a smokeless industry or green economy. Under the circumstances of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, it is essential and urgent to explore whether the tourism industry and technological progress can promote ecological economy development. Based on the panel data of 30 provinces in mainland China from 2007-2019, this paper, for the first time, incorporates the tourism industry, technological progress, and ecological economy development into the analytical framework by constructing a PVAR model. In addition, this paper calculates the indicator weights of each variable using the entropy weighting method. This paper utilizes GMM tests, impulse response analysis, Monte Carlo simulation, and variance decomposition to empirically investigate the dynamic impact mechanism of variables interacting with each other. The conclusions are as follows. First, the tourism industry always contributes positively to ecological economy development, while technological progress can facilitate ecological economy development in the long run rather than in the short term. Second, the tourism industry also positively contributes to technological progress. Third, ecological economy development has a "crowding out effect" on the tourism industry. Fourth, the tourism industry in developed eastern regions has a more powerful impact on ecological economy development than in underdeveloped middle and western regions. Based on the empirical results, we provide practical implications: first, the assessment system of the regional economy should include ecological development indicators; second, the tourism industry should accelerate the use of clean energy and the transformation of green technological innovation.

Evaluating Spatial Identity Based on Climate Adaptation in Small Cities

Urban spatial identity is declining in Chinese cities overall due to urbanization, which is attracting increasing attention from the government. Research gaps include systematically comparing urban identities based on causes and manifestations in small cities. We developed a framework for estimating spatial identity from the perspective of climate adaptation, which is based on the relationship between regional climate and spatial form. Five small cities were selected in China: Wu'an, Qingcheng, Jintang, Changxing, and Lianjiang. Our findings suggest that (1) typical indicators include impervious surface rate, green coverage rate, water surface rate, average story number, and total gross floor area, contributing to morphological characteristics influenced by climate drivers; (2) for the hot humid climate zones, the city with the highest level of spatial identity is in Jintang, followed by Lianjiang and Changxing; and for the cold climate zones, the level of spatial identity in Qingcheng was higher than in Wu'an. This can contribute to the understanding and methodology of spatial identity based on climate adaptation in small cities.

Towards Sustainable Development: How Digitalization, Technological Innovation, and Green Economic Development Interact with Each Other

Green technological innovation is one of the endogenous drivers of green economic growth, and digitalization can promote green economic development in the form of industrial empowerment. The interactive relationship and the degree of influence between digitalization, technological innovation, and green economic development is thus an urgent issue to be addressed. Based on the panel data of 30 Chinese provinces from 2011 to 2019, we measured digitalization, technological innovation, and green economic development for the first time using the entropy method and included them in the same analytical framework by constructing a PVAR model to empirically test their interrelationship and degree of influence. Our findings suggest that: (1) There is an inertial development and self-reinforcing mechanism among the three variables. (2) The impact of digitalization on green economic development has a positive promotion effect, while the impact of technological innovation on green economic development is not significant. (3) The impact of green economic development on technological innovation has a positive promotion effect in the short term, but this effect gradually declines and tends to zero in the long term. Finally, based on the findings, several practical suggestions are made.
