Abstract
Automatic extraction of built-up areas from very high-resolution (VHR) satellite images has received increasing attention in recent years. However, due to the complexity of spectral and spatial characteristics of built-up areas, it is still a challenging task to obtain their precise location and extent. In this study, a patch-based framework was proposed for unsupervised extraction of built-up areas from VHR imagery. First, a group of corner-constrained overlapping patches were defined to locate the candidate built-up areas. Second, for each patch, its salient textures and structural characteristics were represented as a feature vector using integrated high-frequency wavelet coefficients. Then, inspired by visual perception, a patch-level saliency model of built-up areas was constructed by incorporating Gestalt laws of proximity and similarity, which can effectively describe the spatial relationships between patches. Finally, built-up areas were extracted through thresholding and their boundaries were refined by morphological operations. The performance of the proposed method was evaluated on two VHR image datasets. The resulting average F-measure values were 0.8613 for the Google Earth dataset and 0.88 for the WorldView-2 dataset, respectively. Compared with existing models, the proposed method obtains better extraction results, which show more precise boundaries and preserve better shape integrity.

Abstract
The urbanization level in China has increased rapidly since beginning of the 21st century, and the monitoring and analysis of urban expansion has become a popular topic in geoscience applications. However, problems, such as inconsistent concepts and extraction standards, low precision, and poor comparability, existing in urban monitoring may lead to wrong conclusions. This study selects 337 cities at the prefecture level and above in China as research subjects and uses high-resolution images and geographic information data in a semi-automatic extraction method to identify urban areas in 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2015. City size distribution patterns, urban expansion regional characteristics, and expansion types are analyzed. Results show that Chinese cities maintained a high-speed growth trend from 2000 to 2015, with the total area increasing by 115.79%. The overall scale of a city continues to expand, and the system becomes increasingly complex. The urban system is more balanced than the ideal Zipf distribution, but it also exhibited different characteristics in 2005. Urban areas are mostly concentrated in the eastern and central regions, and the difference between the east and the west is considerable. However, cities in the western region continuously expand. Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, and Guangzhou are the four largest cities in China. Approximately 73.30% of the cities are expanding in an extended manner; the urban form tends to be scattered, and land use efficiency is low. The new urban areas mainly come from cultivated land and ecological land.

A Comprehensive Evaluation of Approaches for Built-Up Area Extraction from Landsat OLI Images Using Massive Samples. REMOTE SENSING 2018. Abstract
Detailed information about built-up areas is valuable for mapping complex urban environments. Although a large number of classification algorithms for such areas have been developed, they are rarely tested from the perspective of feature engineering and feature learning. Therefore, we launched a unique investigation to provide a full test of the Operational Land Imager (OLI) imagery for 15-m resolution built-up area classification in 2015, in Beijing, China. Training a classifier requires many sample points, and we proposed a method based on the European Space Agency’s (ESA) 38-m global built-up area data of 2014, OpenStreetMap, and MOD13Q1-NDVI to achieve the rapid and automatic generation of a large number of sample points. Our aim was to examine the influence of a single pixel and image patch under traditional feature engineering and modern feature learning strategies. In feature engineering, we consider spectra, shape, and texture as the input features, and support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF), and AdaBoost as the classification algorithms. In feature learning, the convolutional neural network (CNN) is used as the classification algorithm. In total, 26 built-up land cover maps were produced. The experimental results show the following: (1) The approaches based on feature learning are generally better than those based on feature engineering in terms of classification accuracy, and the performance of ensemble classifiers (e.g., RF) are comparable to that of CNN. Two-dimensional CNN and the 7-neighborhood RF have the highest classification accuracies at nearly 91%; (2) Overall, the classification effect and accuracy based on image patches are better than those based on single pixels. The features that can highlight the information of the target category (e.g., PanTex (texture-derived built-up presence index) and enhanced morphological building index (EMBI)) can help improve classification accuracy. Abstract
Very high spatial resolution (VHR) satellite images possess several advantages in terms of describing the details of ground targets. Extracting built-up areas from VHR images has received increasing attention in practical applications, such as land use planning, urbanization monitoring, geographic information database update. In this study, a novel method is proposed for built-up area detection and delineation on VHR satellite images, using multi-resolution space-frequency analysis, spatial dependence modelling and cross-scale feature fusion. First, the image is decomposed by multi-resolution wavelet transformation, and then the high-frequency information at different levels is employed to represent the multi-scale texture and structural characteristics of built-up areas. Subsequently, the local Getis-Ord statistic is introduced to model the spatial patterns of built-up area textures and structures by measuring the spatial dependence among frequency responses at different spatial positions. Finally, the saliency map of built-up areas is produced using a cross-scale feature fusion algorithm, followed by adaptive threshold segmentation to obtain the detection results. The experiments on ZY-3 and Quickbird datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method through comparisons with existing algorithms.

Abstract
The road networks provide key information for a broad range of applications such as urban planning, urban management, and navigation. The fast-developing technology of remote sensing that acquires high-resolution observational data of the land surface offers opportunities for automatic extraction of road networks. However, the road networks extracted from remote sensing images are likely affected by shadows and trees, making the road map irregular and inaccurate. This research aims to improve the extraction of road centerlines using both very-high-resolution (VHR) aerial images and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) by accounting for road connectivity. The proposed method first applies the fractal net evolution approach (FNEA) to segment remote sensing images into image objects and then classifies image objects using the machine learning classifier, random forest. A post-processing approach based on the minimum area bounding rectangle (MABR) is proposed and a structure feature index is adopted to obtain the complete road networks. Finally, a multistep approach, that is, morphology thinning, Harris corner detection, and least square fitting (MHL) approach, is designed to accurately extract the road centerlines from the complex road networks. The proposed method is applied to three datasets, including the New York dataset obtained from the object identification dataset, the Vaihingen dataset obtained from the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) 2D semantic labelling benchmark and Guangzhou dataset. Compared with two state-of-the-art methods, the proposed method can obtain the highest completeness, correctness, and quality for the three datasets. The experiment results show that the proposed method is an efficient solution for extracting road centerlines in complex scenes from VHR aerial images and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data.
