A Modeling Method for Automatic Extraction of Offshore Aquaculture Zones Based on Semantic Segmentation

Extraction of Aquaculture Pond Region in Coastal Waters of Southeast China Based on Spectral Features and Spatial Convolution

To control the negative effects resulting from the disorderly development of aquaculture ponds and promote the development of the aquaculture industry, rapid and accurate identification and extraction techniques are essential. An aquaculture pond is a special net-like water body divided by complex roads and dikes. Simple spectral features or spatial texture features are not sufficient to accurately extract it, and the mixed feature rule set is more demanding on computer performance. Supported by the GEE platform, and using the Landsat satellite data set and corresponding DEM combined with field survey data, we constructed a decision-making model for the extraction of aquaculture ponds in the coastal waters, and applied this method to the coastal waters of Southeast China. This method combined the image spectral information, spatial features, and morphological operations. The results showed that the total accuracy of this method was 93%, and the Kappa coefficient was 0.86. The overlapping proportions of results between the automated extraction and visual interpretation for test areas were all more than 90%, and the average was 92.5%, which reflected the high precision and reliability of this extraction method. Furthermore, in 2020, the total area of coastal aquaculture ponds in the study area was 6348.51 km2, which was distributed primarily in the cities of Guangdong and Jiangsu. Kernel density analysis suggested that aquaculture ponds in Guangdong and Jiangsu had the highest degree of concentration, which means that they face higher regulatory pressure in the management of aquaculture ponds than other provinces. Therefore, this method can be used to extract aquaculture ponds in coastal waters of the world, and holds great significance to promote the orderly management and scientific development of fishery aquaculture.

Measuring Waste Recyclability Level Using Convolutional Neural Network and Fuzzy Inference System

This paper presents a hybrid model that is used to measure the waste recyclability level using a convolutional neural network (CNN) and fuzzy inference system (FIS; WRL-CNNFIS). The proposed system uses waste images to train a multilayer convolutional neural network to extract the most relevant features that were used in a rule-based fuzzy system to give an accurate percentage of the recyclability level of these images. The proposed model did overcome many challenges in transfer learning models alone, like overfitting and low accuracy. The use of fuzzy rules, improved the performance even with a small data set, Results have shown the effectiveness of the proposed model in terms of all four metrics: accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score. The performance was measured under two testing scenarios. For all evaluation measurement, in all experiments the validation was conducted using the cross validation in the last step. The proposed approach is a robust and consistent approach for classifying organic and recyclable waste types. WRL-CNNFIS has achieved accuracy rate of more than 98%.

Extraction of Offshore Aquaculture Areas from Medium-Resolution Remote Sensing Images Based on Deep Learning

It is important for aquaculture monitoring, scientific planning, and management to extract offshore aquaculture areas from medium-resolution remote sensing images. However, in medium-resolution images, the spectral characteristics of offshore aquaculture areas are complex, and the offshore land and seawater seriously interfere with the extraction of offshore aquaculture areas. On the other hand, in medium-resolution images, due to the relatively low image resolution, the boundaries between breeding areas are relatively fuzzy and are more likely to ‘adhere’ to each other. An improved U-Net model, including, in particular, an atrous spatial pyramid pooling (ASPP) structure and an up-sampling structure, is proposed for offshore aquaculture area extraction in this paper. The improved ASPP structure and up-sampling structure can better mine semantic information and location information, overcome the interference of other information in the image, and reduce ‘adhesion’. Based on the northeast coast of Fujian Province Sentinel-2 Multispectral Scan Imaging (MSI) image data, the offshore aquaculture area extraction was studied. Based on the improved U-Net model, the F1 score and Mean Intersection over Union (MIoU) of the classification results were 83.75% and 73.75%, respectively. The results show that, compared with several common classification methods, the improved U-Net model has a better performance. This also shows that the improved U-Net model can significantly overcome the interference of irrelevant information, identify aquaculture areas, and significantly reduce edge adhesion of aquaculture areas.

Inversion of the Thickness of Crude Oil Film Based on an OG-CNN Model

In recent years, marine oil spill accidents have occurred frequently, seriously endangering marine ecological security. It is highly important to protect the marine ecological environment by carrying out research on the estimation of sea oil spills based on remote sensing technology. In this paper, we combine deep learning with remote sensing technology and propose an oil thickness inversion generative adversarial and convolutional neural network (OG-CNN) model for oil spill emergency monitoring. The model consists of a self-expanding module for the oil film spectral feature data and an oil film thickness inversion module. The feature data self-expanding module can automatically select spectral feature intervals with good spectral separability based on the measured spectral data and then expand the number of samples using a generative adversarial network (GAN) to enhance the generalization of the model. The oil film thickness inversion module is based on a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN). It extracts the characteristics of the spectral feature data of oil film with different thicknesses, and then accurately inverts the oil film’s absolute thickness. In this study, emulsification was not a factor considered, the results show that the absolute oil thickness inversion accuracy of the OG-CNN model proposed in this paper can reach 98.12%, the coefficient of determination can reach 0.987, and the mean deviation remains within ±0.06% under controlled experimental conditions. In the model stability test, the model maintains relatively stable inversion results under the interference of random Gaussian noise. The accuracy of the oil film thickness inversion result remains above 96%, the coefficient of determination can reach 0.973, and the mean deviation is controlled within ±0.6%, which indicates excellent robustness.

Detection of Tailings Dams Using High-Resolution Satellite Imagery and a Single Shot Multibox Detector in the Jing–Jin–Ji Region, China

The timely and accurate mapping and monitoring of mine tailings dams is crucial to the improvement of management practices by decision makers and to the prevention of disasters caused by failures of these dams. Due to the complex topography, varying geomorphological characteristics, and the diversity of ore types and mining activities, as well as the range of scales and production processes involved, as they appear in remote sensing imagery, tailings dams vary in terms of their scale, color, shape, and surrounding background. The application of high-resolution satellite imagery for automatic detection of tailings dams at large spatial scales has been barely reported. In this study, a target detection method based on deep learning was developed for identifying the locations of tailings ponds and obtaining their geographical distribution from high-resolution satellite imagery automatically. Training samples were produced based on the characteristics of tailings ponds in satellite images. According to the sample characteristics, the Single Shot Multibox Detector (SSD) model was fine-tuned during model training. The results showed that a detection accuracy of 90.2% and a recall rate of 88.7% could be obtained. Based on the optimized SSD model, 2221 tailing ponds were extracted from Gaofen-1 high resolution imagery in the Jing–Jin–Ji region in northern China. In this region, the majority of tailings ponds are located at high altitudes in remote mountainous areas. At the city level, the tailings ponds were found to be located mainly in Chengde, Tangshan, and Zhangjiakou. The results prove that the deep learning method is very effective at detecting complex land-cover features from remote sensing images.

A New Method for Extracting Laver Culture Carriers Based on Inaccurate Supervised Classification with FCN-CRF

Timely monitoring of marine aquaculture has considerable significance for marine ecological protection and maritime safety and security. Considering that supervised learning needs to rely on a large number of training samples and the characteristics of intensive and regular distribution of the laver aquaculture zone, in this paper, an inaccurate supervised classification model based on fully convolutional neural network and conditional random filed (FCN-CRF) is designed for the study of a laver aquaculture zone in Lianyungang, Jiangsu Province. The proposed model can extract the aquaculture zone and calculate the area and quantity of laver aquaculture net simultaneously. The FCN is used to extract the laver aquaculture zone by roughly making the training label. Then, the CRF is used to extract the isolated laver aquaculture net with high precision. The results show that the k a p p a coefficient of the proposed model is 0.984, the F 1 is 0.99, and the recognition effect is outstanding. For label production, the fault tolerance rate is high and does not affect the final classification accuracy, thereby saving more label production time. The findings provide a data basis for future aquaculture yield estimation and offshore resource planning as well as technical support for marine ecological supervision and marine traffic management.
