Abstract
BACKGROUND Limited data on immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI)-induced pruritus per se and efficacy of different therapeutic modalities in its management exist. OBJECTIVE To study the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of ICI-induced pruritus per se and to assess the efficacy of the therapeutic modalities usually applied. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the records of 91 patients who were under treatment with ICIs for any kind of neoplasia and developed pruritus during treatment. RESULTS Twenty out of 91 individuals (22.0%) with ICI-induced pruritus had pruritus as the only symptom, while 71/91 (78.0%) presented with pruritus coexisting with an additional cutaneous toxicity. Pruritus was treated with antihistamines (18/20, 90.0%) and/or topical regimens, as first-line choice. In resistant cases, as a second therapeutic intervention, narrow-band UVB (NBUVB), oral steroids and GABA analogs were added (70.0%). Statistical analysis revealed a significant difference in mean pruritus Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) scores between baseline and sequential visits. Moreover, subgroup analysis revealed a significant reduction in mean NRS scores in those treated with phototherapy. LIMITATIONS Retrospective design, low number of patients and survivorship bias. CONCLUSION Pruritus per se was present in a substantial portion of our cohort (22.0%). Our study confirms the efficacy of current treatment strategies and suggests NBUVB as a potential steroid-sparing therapeutic alternative.

Abstract
Y0.9(GdxBi1-x)0.1BO3 phosphors (x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, and 1.0, YGB) were obtained via high-temperature solid-state synthesis. Differentiated phases and micro-morphologies were determined by adjusting the synthesis temperature and the activator content of Gd3+ ions, verifying the hexagonal phase with an average size of ~200 nm. Strong photon emissions were revealed under both ultraviolet and visible radiation, and the effectiveness of energy transfer from Bi3+ to Gd3+ ions was confirmed to improve the narrow-band ultraviolet-B (UVB) (6PJ→8S7/2) emission of Gd3+ ions. The optimal emission was obtained from Y0.9Gd0.08Bi0.02BO3 phosphor annealed at 800 °C, for which maximum quantum yields (QYs) can reach 24.75% and 1.33% under 273 nm and 532 nm excitations, respectively. The optimal QY from the Gd3+-Bi3+ co-doped YGB phosphor is 75 times the single Gd3+-doped one, illustrating that these UVB luminescent phosphors based on co-doped YBO3 orthoborates possess bright UVB emissions and good excitability under the excitation of different wavelengths. Efficient photon conversion and intense UVB emissions indicate that the multifunctional Gd3+-Bi3+ co-doped YBO3 orthoborate is a potential candidate for skin treatment.

Abstract
Skin photoaging is a complicated pathological process and is mainly due to UV irradiation, especially UVB irradiation. Damage induction by UVB is a complex process, involving intricate molecular mechanisms. The formation of bulky photoproducts in the DNA globally affects transcription and splicing and results in the dysfunction of keratinocytes. In this study, we show that δ-catenin is predominantly distributed in keratinocytes of the skin epidermis and functionally accelerates cell proliferation and DNA repair. Ex vivo protein profiling reveals that δ-catenin upregulates the phosphorylation of RSK2Ser-227 by enhancing the interaction between PDK1 and RSK2 and thereby induces the nuclear accumulation of YB1 to promote proliferation and DNA repair. Moreover, δ-catenin overexpression induces in vivo keratinocyte proliferation and DNA repair in UVB-irradiated mouse skin. Notably, acidic fibroblast GF/FGFR1 is identified as one of the key upstream signalings of δ-catenin by inducing δ-catenin stabilization. The involvement of δ-catenin in keratinocyte proliferation and DNA repair may suggest δ-catenin as a target for the treatment of UVB damage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Reduced sirtuin 1 (Sirt1) expression in psoriasis was previously reported, and its activation was associated with disease improvement. Narrow-band ultraviolet B (NB-UVB) downregulates several pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interferon-γ (IFN-γ) and influences keratinocyte differentiation in psoriasis. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to study the in vivo influence NB-UVB treatment on Sirt1 expression in psoriatic skin in relation to disease improvement and IFN-γ expression. METHODS Twenty-six patients with chronic plaque psoriasis were evaluated, and psoriasis area severity index (PASI) was calculated. Skin biopsies were taken from lesional skin of the patients before and after 3 months of treatment with NB-UVB and from 26 controls, where the distribution and immunohistochemistry (IHC) scores of Sirt1 and IFN-γ were determined. RESULTS After 3 months of treatment, Sirt1 distribution and epidermal IHC score were significantly higher, whereas Sirt1 dermal IHC score and IFN-γ distribution, epidermal and dermal IHC scores were significantly lower than the pre-treatment values. Before and after 3 months of NB-UVB therapy, PASI showed a significant negative correlation with Sirt1 distribution and epidermal IHC score; and a significant positive correlation with interferon-γ distribution and epidermal IHC score. Moreover, Sirt1 distributions were negatively correlated with the corresponding interferon-γ distributions. Conclusions The detected upregulation of epidermal Sirt1 following NB-UVB therapy possibly represents another mechanism by which NB-UVB can act in psoriasis and also highlights the role of Sirt1 upregulation in psoriasis treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cutaneous adverse events (AEs) following cancer immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and chemotherapy have been well-documented in the literature. A number of case reports have identified phototherapy, a form of light therapy that mimics sunlight exposure, as a noninvasive treatment modality for these cutaneous toxicities. By inducing local suppression of the immune system, phototherapy is a skin-directed treatment with minimal effect on tumor response. Phototherapy may therefore be a viable treatment option for cutaneous AEs from cancer therapies. METHODS We reviewed the literature for patients treated with phototherapy for cutaneous AEs following cancer immunotherapy, targeted therapy, or chemotherapy. We also included three previously unpublished cases from our own institution. RESULTS We identified 24 patients (80% male, mean age 67 years, range 49-75 years). Patients received the following phototherapy types: NB-UVB (n = 17), PUVA (n = 6), or PDT (n = 1). A topical steroid was used in conjunction with phototherapy in seven patients. At phototherapy onset, cancer treatment was either continued, temporarily discontinued, or discontinued (n = 9, 6, 7, respectively; in two cases, the cancer treatment course was unknown). Improvement of cutaneous AEs was observed in 96% of patients. CONCLUSIONS Phototherapy resulted in full or partial improvement in all but one patient. A topical steroid was used in nearly a third of patients, suggesting some oncodermatologists co-administer topicals to further boost response. Continuation of cancer therapy in the majority of patients highlights an additional advantage of phototherapy. We believe phototherapy may be an effective adjunctive treatment to topical steroids when treating these cutaneous toxicities.

Abstract
Background Mycosis fungoides (MF) is one of the primary cutaneous T-cell lymphomas and is considered to be the most common extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphomas. MF is characterized by different subtypes based on clinical presentation and immunophenotyping studies. We aimed to study the clinical patterns and treatment response in cases of MF among the patients attending a tertiary referral hospital in Saudi Arabia. Methodology A retrospective study, case record-based study was done to review all the patients diagnosed with MF from January 2011 to May 2016. All cases with histopathological confirmation and immunophenotyping were included in the study. Treatment follow-up was reviewed for 9 months in all cases. Treatment response was graded based on a global physician assessment-complete response, good response, moderate response, and minimal or no response. Results Out of 34 cases of MF included in the study, 11 were hyperpigmented MF, 21 were hypopigmented MF, and there was one case each of poikilodermatous MF and pagetoid reticulosis. Of the total, fourteen (66.7%) of hypopigmented MF patients showed a complete response to phototherapy Narrowband UVB (NB-UVB) in combination with topical corticosteroids. Nine (81.8%) of hyperpigmented MF patients showed partial to the phototherapy NB-UVB in combination with the topical corticosteroid. Among the other types; one case of poikilodermatous MF (2.9%) showed a moderate response to phototherapy NB-UVB with topical corticosteroid and systemic acitretin. Conclusions The most common type of MF seen in our study was the hypopigmented type, affecting a younger age group, and the same showed a good response to phototherapy NB-UVB combined with topical corticosteroids.

Abstract
For the treatment of patients with atopic dermatitis of moderate and heavy severity level, narrow-band medium-wave ultraviolet therapy (narrow-band phototherapy) can be used. An analysis of the results of studies of the efficacy and safety of narrow-band medium-wavelength ultraviolet therapy in patients with atopic dermatitis is presented, and a characteristic of the regimens of the phototherapy carried out is given. It has been shown that narrow-band phototherapy is an effective and safe method of treating patients with atopic dermatitis, but its effectiveness varies widely. Data were obtained on the absence of an increase in the effect during therapy with higher doses of radiation, about the higher efficiency of narrow-band phototherapy with concurrent medication, with an increase in the number of irradiation procedures, as well as in patients with a higher minimum erythemal dose, which indicates the possible existence of factors characterizing the individual characteristics of the response of patients to narrow-band phototherapy.

Abstract
Phototherapy is widely used to treat various chronic skin diseases. One of the most effective methods of treatment is narrow-band medium-wave ultraviolet radiation with a wavelength of 311 nm (UVB-311). UVB-311 is used for such immune-mediated diseases as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, vitiligo, mycosis fungoides and others. Despite the fact that the method was developed more than 30 years ago, the exact mechanism of its therapeutic action remains insufficiently studied. To date, most of the effects of UVB-311 are explained by its effect on the immune cells of the skin. This review examines data on the effects on the main molecular targets, including T-lymphocytes, keratinocytes, Langerhans cells, cytokine profile, epidermal barrier proteins. Data on the features of the pathogenetic effect of UVB-311 on the immune mechanisms of pathogenesis in atopic dermatitis were obtained. The issues of dosing by determining the minimum erythemic dose (MED) or skin phototype, methodology of procedures are discussed. Prospects for further study of photobiological aspects of UVB-311 action are determined.

Abstract
Of all the therapeutic options available in Dermatology, few of them have the history, effectiveness, and safety of phototherapy. Heliotherapy, NB-UVB, PUVA, and UVA1 are currently the most common types of phototherapy used. Although psoriasis is the most frequent indication, it is used for atopic dermatitis, vitiligo, cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, and cutaneous sclerosis, among others. Before indicating phototherapy, a complete patient assessment should be performed. Possible contraindications should be actively searched for and it is essential to assess whether the patient can come to the treatment center at least twice a week. One of the main method limitations is the difficulty that patients have to attend the sessions. This therapy usually occurs in association with other treatments: topical or systemic medications. Maintaining the regular monitoring of the patient is essential to identify and treat possible adverse effects. Phototherapy is recognized for its benefits and should be considered whenever possible.

Abstract
UV phototherapy is an essential and efficient therapeutic option in the treatment of dermatological diseases. Due to the difficult revenue situation, the market for ready-to-use products of psoralen and UV therapy devices is constantly changing.

Abstract
We recently demonstrated that advanced cooling composition (ACC) has effective ingredients that exhibit anti-inflammatory effects in RAW 264.7 cells stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and exhibit strong antimicrobial effects on Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), Candida albicans, and Streptococcus mutans. To further investigate whether ACC has beneficial effects in ultraviolet B (UVB)-irradiated human keratinocytes (HaCaT cells), HaCaT cells were pretreated with ACC prior to UVB irradiation. Our data showed that ACC, which is effective at 100 µg/mL, is nontoxic and has an antioxidative effect against UVB-induced intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) in HaCaT cells. In addition, ACC exerts cytoprotective effects against UVB-induced cytotoxicity in HaCaT cells by inhibiting abnormal inflammation and apoptosis through the regulation of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signals, such as jun-amino-terminal kinase (JNK), p38, and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK). Therefore, these results indicate that ACC is a potentially beneficial raw material that possesses antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and antiapoptotic effects against UVB-induced keratinocytes and may have applications in skin health.

Abstract
Sphingolipids (SLs), are structural components of the skin that contribute to the regulation of the proliferation and differentiation of keratinocytes as well as regulation of the skin epidermal barrier. A prospective cross sectional comparative controlled study was designed to evaluate the serum level of sphingosine 1 phosphate (S1P) and ceramide (CER) before and after narrow band ultraviolet B (NBUVB) in psoriatic patients. The study included 32 patients presented with psoriasis and 32 healthy age and sex matched control volunteers. (S1P and CER) levels were measured before and after NBUVB sessions for psoriatic patients and their levels were correlated to psoriasis area and severity index (PASI) improvements. PASI scores and serum values of the studied sphingolipids demonstrated a significant difference between the baseline and at the end of the 12 weeks NBUVB treatment. A statistically significant positive correlation was established between psoriasis severity and S1P serum levels before and after treatment while no correlation was observed between psoriasis severity and CER serum levels. Decreased total CER and increased S1P serum levels reflect altered sphingolipid metabolism in psoriasis and can be predictors of disease severity.

Abstract
Intermediate ultraviolet (UVB) therapy is considered a relatively safe method of treating skin diseases with an autoimmune component in development compared to medical drug methods, including PUVA therapy. This is due to the small depth of penetration of the rays of this wavelength range into skin, which provides a purely local effect on the human body. Excimer lamps are an alternative to the expensive excimer laser for phototherapy of psoriasis or vitiligo. However, for effective phototherapy using UVB lamps, the distance from an emitter to a patient’s skin must be considered. In this paper, we report on treatment of patients using an excimer lamp, the control unit of which is equipped with an optical system for controlling of ultraviolet radiation dose, which allows automatically calculating the time for a set UVB dose. The article describes the results of phototherapy using an excimer lamp of several cases of psoriasis, vitiligo and other forms of dermatitis with a good therapeutic and cosmetic effect. When using an excimer lamp, not a single case of exacerbation of dermatological diseases was established.

Abstract
Verruca plana is a kind of benign proliferative skin disease that generally occurs in exposed parts, but the treatment of warts poses a therapeutic challenge for physicians, as there is no method, among numerous approaches, that has been proven effective for completely curing this disease. We report a case of verruca plana cured by narrow-band ultraviolet B (NB-UVB), which provides a new treatment of verruca plana.

Abstract
Background Baicalin, a natural product isolated from Scutellaria radix, has been reported to exert anti-oxidant and anti-apoptotic effects on skin, but the underlying mechanism remains poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the possible mechanism of anti-UVB effect of baicalin in human skin fibroblasts. Methods Cell proliferation was estimated by CCK-8 Kit. Apoptotic incidence was detected by flow cytometry with Annexin V-PE/PI apoptosis detection kit. Autophagy was determined by the evaluation of fluorescent LC3 puncta and Western blotting. Cell signalling was analysed by Western blotting. Results Baicalin exerted cytoprotective effects in UVB-induced HSFs. Moreover, baicalin increased autophagy and suppressed UVB-induced apoptosis of HSFs. Pretreatment with 3-MA, an autophagy inhibitor, attenuated baicalin-induced HSFs autophagy and promoted apoptosis. Baicalin activated AMPK, which leads to suppression of basal mTOR activity in cultured HSFs. Administration of compound C, an AMPK inhibitor, abrogated AMPK phosphorylation and increased mTOR phosphorylation and apoptosis compared with baicalin alone. Conclusion Taken together, these results indicate the important role of mTOR inhibition in UVB protection by baicalin and provide a new target and strategy for better prevention of UV-induced skin disorders.

Abstract
Extensive exposure to UVB (280–320 nm) is the major risk responsible for various skin injuries. Numerous reports have shown that natural products could demonstrate photochemopreventive efficacy against UVB damage. We investigated the preventive effects and associated molecular mechanisms of red raspberry extract upon UVB-caused damage in human epidermal keratinocytes and a nude mouse model. The protein profiles and immunohistological study on a nude mouse skin indicated that red raspberry extract could prevent UVB-caused cell death and protect the skin against UVB-exposed injury manifested by wrinkling, scaling, tanning, and water loss as well as epidermal thickening. In addition, red raspberry extract application effectively abolished oxidative damage in DNA and attenuated the carbonylation level of proteins, which attributed to the activation of SOD, Nrf2 and its target genes, and HO-1. Red raspberry extract also altered the cells' apoptotic signaling pathways including caspase-3 as well as the inflammatory cascade such as c-jun and attenuated UVB-induced activation of NF-κB and COX-2. Red raspberry extract could alleviate direct photodamage to the skin caused by UVB exposure through the ROS scavenger and protection against inflammatory responses, which may allow the development of novel strategies in protecting the skin subjected to UVB radiation.

Abstract
Immune checkpoint inhibitors targeting the programmed cell death receptor 1 (PD-1) are increasingly used to treat several malignancies, with the most common adverse event being cutaneous toxicity. We report the case of a 68-years-old man with stage IV non-small cell lung cancer treated with nivolumab who developed a pruritic, lichenoid eruption refractory to treatment with topical or systemic steroids, who was started on narrow band ultraviolet B therapy which resolved the reaction.

Abstract
Hypopigmented interface T-cell dyscrasia (HITCD) is a distinct form of lymphoid dyscrasia that may progress to hypopigmented mycosis fungoides (HMF). We compared both diseases as regards their CD4/CD8 phenotype and expression of granzyme B and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and how these are affected by narrow-band UVB (nb-UVB). The study included 11 patients with HITCD and 9 patients with HMF. They received nb-UVB thrice weekly until complete repigmentation or a maximum of 48 sessions. Pretreatment and posttreatment biopsies were stained using anti CD4, CD8, TNF-α, and granzyme B monoclonal antibodies. Epidermal lymphocytes were CD8 predominant in 54.5% and 66.7% of HITCD and HMF cases, respectively, whereas dermal lymphocytes were CD4 predominant in 63.6% and 66.7%, respectively. Significantly, more dermal infiltrate was encountered in HMF (P = 0.041). In both diseases, granzyme B was only expressed in the dermis, whereas TNF-α was expressed both in the epidermis and dermis. No difference existed as regards the number of sessions needed to achieve repigmentation or cumulative nb-UVB dose reached at end of study. (P > 0.05). Narrow-band UVB significantly reduced only the epidermal lymphocytes in both diseases (P ≤ 0.05) with their complete disappearance in 8 (72.7%) HITCD and 6 (66.7%) HMF cases. In both diseases, nb-UVB did not affect granzyme B or TNF-α expression (P > 0.05). In conclusion, both diseases share the same phenotype, with HITCD being a milder form of T-cell dysfunction. In both diseases, epidermal lymphocytes are mainly CD8-exhausted cells lacking cytotoxicity, whereas dermal cells are mostly reactive cells exerting antitumor cytotoxicity. Tumor necrosis factor-alpha mediates hypopigmentation in both diseases and prevents disease progression. Repigmentation after nb-UVB in both diseases occurs before and independently from disappearance of the dermal infiltrate.

Abstract
We report on the synthesis, characterization, and radioluminescence quantification of several new varieties of nanoparticles with the general composition β-NaLnF4, incorporating known luminescent activator/sensitizer pairs. Using Monte Carlo modeling to complement luminescence measurements, we have calculated the radioluminescence yields and intrinsic conversion efficiencies of colloidally-dispersed nanoparticles by comparison to an organic liquid scintillator. While five of the compositions had low to modest radioluminescence yields relative to bulk materials, colloidal β-Na(Lu0.65Gd0.2Tb0.15)F4 displayed a strong output of 39 460 photons per MeV absorbed, comparable to some of the best non-hygroscopic bulk crystal scintillators and X-ray phosphors such as Gd2O2S:Tb. Measurements of β-Na(Lu0.65Gd0.2Tb0.15)F4 powder samples revealed persistent luminescence as well as stable charge trapping, warranting further investigation.

Abstract
PURPOSE To define the efficacy and safety of narrowband ultraviolet A1 (UVA1) for the treatment of dermal fibrosis in bleomycin-induced mouse model of scleroderma. MATERIALS AND METHODS 42 DBA/2 strain mice were included in the study: healthy mice and mice with established scleroderma, treated with high or medium dose of UVA1. Non-treated groups served as control. The equipment emitting 365±5nm UVA1 radiation was used in the study. The average cumulative doses were 1200J/cm2 for high and 600J/cm2 for medium dose course. Histological analysis was performed for the evaluation of the dermal thickness and mast cells density. The expressions of p53 and Ki-67 proteins were assessed by immunohistochemical analyses. RESULTS Skin thickness of mice with scleroderma, treated with high and medium dose of UVA1, were lower (272.9±113.2μm and 394±125.9μm, respectively) in comparison to the dermal thickness of non-treated animals (599±55.7μm). The dermal mast cells count in mice with scleroderma was reduced after high and medium dose treatment to 11±1.7 and 13±2.2, respectively, as compared to that in non-treated mice (23±3.0). No significant upregulation of p53 nor Ki-67 proteins was observed in the skin of healthy mice and mice with scleroderma after high- and medium-dose of UVA1. CONCLUSIONS The results of this study indicate that 365nm UVA1 with the cumulative doses of 1200J/cm2 and 600J/cm2 is safe and effective for the dermal fibrosis treatment.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Matrix metalloproteinase-12 (MMP-12) may play an important role in the pathogenesis and spread of psoriatic disease. AIM To investigate plasma levels of the selected enzyme in plaque psoriasis patients before and after the course of narrowband UVB (NBUVB) therapy with respect to disease advancement. MATERIAL AND METHODS The cohort included 49 patients suffering from plaque psoriasis, divided into groups according to severity of the disease. The control group consisted of 40 healthy volunteers. Plasma levels of MMP-12 were determined using immunoenzyme assay (ELISA), while the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) was used to define disease advancement. RESULTS The results have shown a significantly decreased plasma level of MMP-12 in the total psoriasis patient group compared to healthy individuals, declining with the increase in disease advancement. The NBUVB therapy caused a decrease in the concentration of the analyzed enzyme, but this change was not statistically significant in the total group of psoriatic patients, while a significant change was detected in patients with a mild advancement of the disease. CONCLUSIONS Decreased synthesis of MMP-12 may lead to the stimulation of the epidermal angiogenesis process, which results in the appearance and spread of psoriatic scales. Based on the obtained results, macrophage metalloelastase seems to be a negatively reacting plasma biomarker of the studied disease.

Abstract
Background Ultraviolet (UV) light is used for phototherapy in dermatology, and UVB light (around 310 nm) is effective for treatment of psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. In addition, it is known that UVC light (around 265 nm) has a bactericidal effect, but little is known about the bactericidal effect of UVB light. In this study, we examined the bactericidal effects of UVB-light emitting diode (LED) irradiation on oral bacteria to explore the possibility of using a 310 nm UVB-LED irradiation device for treatment of oral infectious diseases. Methods We prepared a UVB (310 nm) LED device for intraoral use to examine bactericidal effects on Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sauguinis, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Fusobacterium nucleatum and also to examine the cytotoxicity to a human oral epithelial cell line (Ca9–22). We also examined the production of nitric oxide and hydrogen peroxide from Ca9–22 cells after irradiation with UVB-LED light. Results Irradiation with the 310 nm UVB-LED at 105 mJ/cm2 showed 30–50% bactericidal activity to oral bacteria, though 17.1 mJ/cm2 irradiation with the 265 nm UVC-LED completely killed the bacteria. Ca9–22 cells were strongly injured by irradiation with the 265 nm UVC-LED but were not harmed by irradiation with the 310 nm UVB-LED. Nitric oxide and hydrogen peroxide were produced by Ca9–22 cells with irradiation using the 310 nm UVB-LED. P. gingivalis was killed by applying small amounts of those reactive oxygen species (ROS) in culture, but other bacteria showed low sensitivity to the ROS. Conclusions Narrowband UVB-LED irradiation exhibited a weak bactericidal effect on oral bacteria but showed low toxicity to gingival epithelial cells. Its irradiation also induces the production of ROS from oral epithelial cells and may enhance bactericidal activity to specific periodontopathic bacteria. It may be useful as a new adjunctive therapy for periodontitis. Methods Plasma samples of 49 patients suffering from plaque psoriasis and 40 healthy volunteers were evaluated. Concentrations of MMP-3, MMP-9 and TIMP-3 were determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, while Psoriasis Area and Severity Index was used to define disease advancement. Results Plasma levels of MMP-3, MMP-9 and TIMP-3 were significantly elevated in psoriasis patients compared to healthy individuals. A course of ultraviolet B narrowband treatment resulted in a significant decline in the studied metalloproteinases. Furthermore, the concentration of selected tissue inhibitors was negatively correlated with baseline Psoriasis Area and Severity Index score. Conclusion Our research highlights the meaningful role of MMP-3, MMP-9 and TIMP-3 in psoriasis pathogenesis and clearance of disease symptoms. Furthermore, plasma levels of the analyzed metalloproteinases seem to be a valuable psoriasis biomarker.

Abstract
Epidermal cells are an important regenerative source for skin wound healing. Aged epidermal cells have a low ability to renew themselves and repair skin injury. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation, particularly UVB, can cause photo-aging of the skin by suppressing the viability of human epidermal cells. A chorion-derived stem cell conditioned medium (CDSC-CNM) is thought to have regenerative properties. This study aimed to determine the regenerative effects of CDSC-CNM on UVB-induced photo-aged epidermal cells. Epidermal cells were passaged four times and irradiated with quantitative UVB, and non-irradiated cells served as a control group. Cells were then treated with different concentrations of CDSC-CNM. Compared to the non-irradiated group, the proliferation rates and migration rates of UVB-induced photo-aged epidermal cells significantly decreased (p < 0.05) with increasing intracellular radical oxygen species (ROS) generation and DNA damage. After treatment with CDSC-CNM, photo-aged epidermal cells significantly improved their viability, and their ROS generation and DNA damage decreased. The secretory factors in CDSC-CNM, including epidermal growth factor (EGF), transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β), interleukin (IL)-6, and IL-8 and the related signaling pathway protein levels, increased compared to the control medium (CM). The potential regenerative and reparative effects of CDSC-CNM indicate that it may be a candidate material for the treatment of prematurely aged skin. The functions of the secretory factors and the mechanisms of CDSC-CNM therapy deserve further attention.

This study aims to analyze plasma levels of MMP-2 and TIMP-2 in plaque psoriasis patients before and after the course of narrowband ultraviolet-B (NBUVB) therapy with respect to disease advancement. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 49 patients suffering from plaque psoriasis and 40 healthy volunteers were enrolled into the study. Plasma levels of MMP-2 and TIMP-2 were determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, while Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) was used to define the disease advancement. RESULTS The results showed increased plasma levels of MMP-2 and TIMP-2, but this change was significant only in case of MMP-2 in total psoriatic group compared to healthy subjects. Moreover, there was an increase in the concentrations of chosen factors with an increase in the severity of the disease. The NBUVB therapy causes a decline in the concentration of the analyzed enzyme and its inhibitor, although this change was statistically significant in the total psoriatic group only in case of MMP-2. There was also a positive correlation between MMP-2, TIMP-2, and PASI score value. CONCLUSION Our study highlights a possible important role of MMP-2 in the activity of psoriasis and clearance of disease symptoms. Moreover, plasma MMP-2 seems to be a valuable psoriasis biomarker.

Abstract
Phototherapy has been the mainstay of vitiligo therapy for several decades. A variety of wavelengths and modalities are available, but narrowband ultraviolet B remains the safest and most commonly used treatment. Acting on multiple steps in vitiligo pathogenesis, narrowband ultraviolet B is one of the few therapies that can effectively induce stabilization and stimulate repigmentation. Achievement of optimal results involves using a combination of appropriate treatment protocols, careful patient selection, and patient education to set expectations. Individual patient characteristics, including disease activity, vitiligo phenotype, lesion location, and skin phototype, should all be considered, along with combination therapies.

Abstract
Narrowband ultraviolet B (NB-UVB) has been widely used in dermatological phototherapy. As for the application of NB-UVB phototherapy to graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), we previously reported that it was highly efficacious for cutaneous lesions of acute GVHD (aGVHD) and that expansion of regulatory T (Treg) cells induced by NB-UVB might be one of the mechanisms. In order to examine whether NB-UVB irradiation through expansion of Treg cells is effective for the treatment of not only cutaneous aGVHD but also aGVHD of inner organs such as the intestine or liver, we conducted experiments in which a murine lethal aGVHD model, characterized by severe involvement of the intestine, was irradiated with NB-UVB. We found that NB-UVB irradiation improved the clinical score and survival rate. The pathological score of aGVHD was improved in all affected organs: intestine, liver, and skin. In the serum of mice irradiated with NB-UVB, the levels of Treg cells-associated cytokines such as transforming growth factor beta (TGFβ) and interleukin-10 (IL-10) were elevated. The numbers of infiltrating Treg cells in inflamed tissue of the intestine and those in spleen were increased in mice treated with NB-UVB. This is the first report demonstrating that NB-UVB phototherapy has the ability to ameliorate intestinal aGVHD through the expansion of Treg cells.

Abstract
Seborrheic Dermatitis (SD) and dandruff are of a continuous spectrum of the same disease that affects the seborrheic areas of the body. Dandruff is restricted to the scalp, and involves itchy, flaking skin without visible inflammation. SD can affect the scalp as well as other seborrheic areas, and involves itchy and flaking or scaling skin, inflammation and pruritus. Various intrinsic and environmental factors, such as sebaceous secretions, skin surface fungal colonization, individual susceptibility, and interactions between these factors, all contribute to the pathogenesis of SD and dandruff. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge on SD and dandruff, including epidemiology, burden of disease, clinical presentations and diagnosis, treatment, genetic studies in humans and animal models, and predisposing factors. Genetic and biochemical studies and investigations in animal models provide further insight on the pathophysiology and strategies for better treatment.

Abstract
The goal of the current study was to review a cohort of Asian children with atopic dermatitis (AD) treated using phototherapy at a tertiary dermatologic center in Singapore. We performed a retrospective review of patients younger than 16 years old with a clinical diagnosis of AD treated with phototherapy at the National Skin Center, Singapore, over a 5-year period from 2004 to 2008. Twenty-five patients were identified who were ages 7 to 15 years at the time they underwent phototherapy, with equal sex distribution. The duration of disease ranged from 2 to 14 years. Most patients had extensive disease involving more than 70% of their body surface area. Fifteen patients were treated with narrowband ultraviolet B (NBUVB) phototherapy, with 10 (66%) showing improvement of symptoms. The duration of therapy was 3 to 30 months (mean 11 mos), with a mean of 60 treatment sessions (range 12-104). Nine patients were treated with combined ultraviolet A (UVA) and NBUVB phototherapy. Five patients (55%) improved, with four having good response and one having mild improvement. The duration of therapy was 1-6 months (mean 3.6 mos), with an average of 22 treatment sessions (range 10-44). Two patients underwent combined UVA/broad-band UVB (BBUVB) phototherapy. Both had worsening of disease requiring cessation of treatment. Phototherapy is a useful adjunct in the treatment of moderate to severe AD in children. More than half of the patients treated with NBUVB or combined UVA and NBUVB improved with phototherapy, but the usefulness of combined UVA and BBUVB requires further evaluation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Atopic dermatitis (AD) is the most common inflammatory disease. Evolving disease models link changes in epidermal growth and differentiation to T(H)2/T(H)22 cytokine activation. However, these models have not been tested by in vivo suppression of T-cell cytokines. Cyclosporine (CsA) is an immunosuppressant that is highly effective for severe disease, but its mechanism in AD skin lesions has not been studied. OBJECTIVE We sought to establish the ability of a systemic immunosuppressant to modulate immune and epidermal alterations that form the pathogenic disease phenotype and to correlate changes with clinical improvement. METHODS CsA's effects on AD skin pathology were evaluated by using gene expression and immunohistochemistry studies in baseline, week 2, and week 12 lesional and nonlesional biopsy specimens from 19 patients treated with 5 mg/kg/d CsA for 12 weeks. RESULTS After 2 and 12 weeks of treatment, we observed significant reductions of 51% and 72%, respectively, in SCORAD scores. Clinical improvements were associated with significant gene expression changes in lesional but also nonlesional skin, particularly reductions in levels of T(H)2-, T(H)22-, and some T(H)17-related molecules (ie, IL-13, IL-22, CCL17, S100As, and elafin/peptidase inhibitor 3), and modulation of epidermal hyperplasia and differentiation measures. CONCLUSIONS This is the first study that establishes a relationship between cytokine activation and molecular epidermal alterations, as well as correlations between disease biomarkers in the skin and clinical improvement. The reversal of the molecular phenotype with CsA and the associated biomarkers can serve as a reference for the successful modulation of tissue inflammation with specific immune antagonists in future studies, contributing to the understanding of the specific cytokines involved in epidermal pathology.
