Interaction between Cd and Zn on Metal Accumulation, Translocation and Mineral Nutrition in Tall Fescue (Festuca arundinacea)

Integrated cell wall and transcriptomic analysis revealed the mechanism underlying zinc-induced alleviation of cadmium toxicity in Cosmos bipinnatus

Plant growth is severely harmed by cadmium (Cd) contamination, while the addition of zinc (Zn) can reduce the toxic effects of Cd. However, the interaction between Cd and Zn on the molecular mechanism and cell wall of Cosmosbipinnatus is unclear. In this study, a transcriptome was constructed using RNA-sequencing. In C. bipinnatus root transcriptome data, the expression of 996, 2765, and 3023 unigenes were significantly affected by Cd, Zn, and Cd + Zn treatments, respectively, indicating different expression patterns of some metal transporters among the Cd, Zn, and Cd + Zn treatments. With the addition of Zn, the damage to the cell wall was reduced, both the proportion and content of polysaccharides in the cell wall were changed, and Cd accumulation was decreased by 32.34%. In addition, we found that Cd and Zn mainly accumulated in pectins, the content of which increased by 30.79% and 61.4% compared to the CK treatment. Thus, Zn could alleviate the toxicity of Cd to C. bipinnatus. This study revealed the interaction between Cd and Zn at the physiological and molecular levels, broadening our understanding of the mechanisms of tolerance to Cd and Zn stress in cosmos.

Influences of earthworm activity and mucus on Cd phytoremediation based on harvesting different leaf types of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea)

To explore cost-effective and efficient phytoremediation strategies, this study investigated the distinct roles of earthworm activity and mucus in enhancing Cd phytoextraction from soils contaminated by Festuca arundinacea, focusing on the comparative advantages of selective leaf harvesting versus traditional whole-plant harvesting methods. Our study employed a horticultural trial to explore how earthworm activity and mucus affect Festuca arundinacea' s Cd phytoremediation in soils using control, earthworm, and mucus treatments to examine their respective effects on plant growth and Cd distribution. Earthworm activity increased the dry weight of leaves by 13.5% and significantly increased the dry weights of declining and senescent leaves, surpassing that of the control by more than 40%. Earthworm mucus had a similar, albeit less pronounced, effect on plant growth than earthworm activity. This study not only validated the significant role of earthworm activity in enhancing Cd phytoextraction by Festuca arundinacea, with earthworm activity leading to over 85% of Cd being allocated to senescent tissues that comprise only approximately 20% of the plant biomass, but also highlighted a sustainable and cost-effective approach to phytoremediation by emphasizing selective leaf harvesting supported by earthworm activity. By demonstrating that earthworm mucus alone can redistribute Cd with less efficiency compared to live earthworms, our findings offer practical insights into optimizing phytoremediation strategies and underscore the need for further research into the synergistic effects of biological agents in soil remediation processes.

Early-stage growth and elemental composition patterns of Brassica napus L. in response to Cd-Zn contamination

Soil contamination caused by the presence of Cd and the excess amount of Zn is a widespread concern in agricultural areas, posing significant risks to the growth and development of crops. In this paper, the early-stage development and metal (Cd and Zn) accumulation potential of rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) grown under different metal application schemes were assessed by determining radicle and hypocotyl length and the micro- and macro elemental composition of plantlets after 24, 72, and 120 h. The results indicated that the single and co-application of Cd and Zn significantly reduced the radicle and hypocotyl lengths. Accumulation intensity for Cd and Zn was affected by Cd and the combination of Cd and Zn in the solution, respectively. In addition, both metals significantly influenced the tissue Mn and had a minor effect on Cu and Fe concentrations. Both Cd and Zn significantly affected macro element concentrations by decreasing tissue Ca and influencing K and Mg concentrations in a dose- and exposure time-dependent manner. These findings specify the short-term and support the long-term use of rapeseed in remediation processes. However, interactions of metals are crucial in determining the concentration patterns in tissues, which deserves more attention in future investigations.

Transfer and transformation characteristics of Zn and Cd in soil-rotation plant (Brassica napus L and Oryza sativa L) system and its influencing factors

Rice-rape rotation is a widely practiced cropping system in China. However, changes in soil properties and management could change the bioavailability of Cd, In order to explore the occurrence state, transportation and transformation characteristics of heavy metals Cd and Zn in rice-rape rotation system in Guizhou karst area with high background value of Cd. In the karst rice-rape rotation area, the physical and chemical properties of soil, chemical specifications and activities of Cd and Zn at different soil depths and during various crop growth stages, and the bioaccumulation of Cd and Zn in different tissues of rice and rape were studied by field experiment and laboratory analysis. The bioaccumulation of Cd and Zn and the effects of physical and chemical soil properties on the activities and bioavailabilities of Cd and Zn during rice-rape rotation were explored. The findings revealed that soil particle size, composition, pH, redox potential, soil organic matter, and Cd and Zn contents varied dramatically, especially in deep soils. The physical and chemical properties of the deep and surface soils were significantly related to the bioaccumulation of Cd and Zn. Cd and Zn are activated during crop rotation. Cd was easier to be enriched in rice, while Zn was easier to be enriched in rape. The correlation between Cd and Zn contents in Brassica campestris L and their enrichment abilities were not significant, but that in Oryza sativa L were significant. During rice-rape rotation, the chemical speciations and activities of Cd and Zn changed with the changes of soil properties and waterlogging environment. This study had important basic guiding significance for the evaluation, prevention and control of heavy metal pollution, and improving soil quality in different rotation systems in karst areas, and was conducive to promoting the safe production of rape and rice.

Interaction of Lead and Cadmium Reduced Cadmium Toxicity in Ficus parvifolia Seedlings

Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) pollution occurs widely in soils due to various anthropogenic activities. Lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) coexist in soil frequently, threatening plant growth. To explore the interaction effect between Pb and Cd in Ficus parvifolia and the response of plant physiological characteristics to Pb and Cd stress, we designed a soil culture experiment. The experiment demonstrated that Pb stress improved leaf photosynthesis ability, while Cd stress inhibited it. Furthermore, Pb or Cd stress increased malonaldehyde (MDA) content, but plants were able to reduce it by increasing antioxidant enzyme activities. The presence of Pb could alleviate Cd phytotoxicity in plants by inhibiting Cd uptake and accumulation as well as increasing leaf photosynthesis and antioxidant ability. Pearson correlation analysis illustrated that the variability of Cd uptake and accumulation between Pb and Cd stress was related to plant biomass and antioxidant enzyme activities. This research will offer a new perspective on alleviating Cd phytotoxicity in plants.

Lithium Accumulation in Salvinia natans Free-Floating Aquatic Plant

The new context of the intensive use of lithium-based batteries led to increased production of Li and Li-containing wastes. All these activities are potential sources of environmental pollution with Li. However, the negative impact of Li on ecosystems, its specific role in the plants' development, uptake mechanism, and response to the induced stress are not fully understood. In this sense, the Li uptake and changes induced by Li exposure in the major and trace element contents, photosynthetic pigments, antioxidant activity, and elemental composition of Salvinia natans were also investigated. The results showed that Salvinia natans grown in Li-enriched nutrient solutions accumulated much higher Li contents than those grown in spring waters with a low Li content. However, the Li bioaccumulation factor in Salvinia natans grown in Li-enriched nutrient solutions was lower (13.3-29.5) than in spring waters (13.0-42.2). The plants exposed to high Li contents showed a decrease in their K and photosynthetic pigments content, while their total antioxidant activity did not change substantially.

Influence of magnetized water irrigation on characteristics of antioxidant enzyme, ferritin, and Cd excretion in Festuca arundinacea during phytoextraction

The magnetic field can alter the hydrogen-bond structure and polarity characteristics of water; therefore, we hypothesize that magnetized water can affect plant physiological functions, including metal detoxification and excretion. In this study, the amount of Cd excreted on the leaves of Festuca arundinacea was estimated using magnetized water and normal water irrigation patterns. Irrigation with magnetized water improved the shoot dry weight and Cd content in F. arundinacea by 13.6% and 52.8%, respectively, compared to the control. Magnetized water irrigation also increased antioxidant enzyme activities in plant leaves, thereby alleviating the oxidative damage. The concentration of ferritin was 0.91 folds higher than that of the control, increasing the Fe sequestration and detoxification capacity of F. arundinacea. The amount of Cd excreted was significantly higher under magnetized water irrigation, thereby increasing the annual Cd removal by 109.7% from soil by leaf washing compared with that of the control. In contrast, F. arundinacea irrigated with magnetized water excreted 38.1% less Fe owing to the increase in ferritin levels, compared with that of the control. This study suggests a novel pathway of Cd phytoremediation by rinsing excreted Cd from the leaf surface without harvesting and replanting F. arundinacea.

Changes in the Serum Concentrations of Essential Trace Metals in Patients with Benign and Malignant Breast Cancers

Essential trace metals (ETMs) may play important roles in the pathophysiology of benign and malignant breast cancers. Our study aimed to find associations between ETMs and benign and malignant breast cancers. We recruited 146 patients with benign (n = 73) and malignant (n = 73) breast tumors and 95 healthy controls (HCs) from Peking University Third Hospital, Beijing, China. The serum concentrations of seven ETMs (Zn, Mn, Cu, Fe, Co, Ni, and Mo) were evaluated using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The serum concentrations of Zn were significantly lower in the malignant group than in the HC group, whereas the concentrations of Cu (p < 0.001) were significantly higher in the malignant group. The concentrations of Fe were significantly lower in both malignant and benign groups than in the HC group (p < 0.05). We observed that the Fe/Cu ratio was lower and the Cu/Ni ratio was higher in the malignant group than in the HCs, as well as in the benign group than in the HCs. The serum concentration of Fe (OR = 0.454; 95% CI, 0.263, 0.784; p = 0.005) was negatively associated with breast tumors after adjusting for potential confounders, including age, BMI, and smoking, drinking and menopause statuses; that of Cu (OR = 2.274; 95% CI, 1.282, 4.031; p = 0.005) was positively associated. Changes in the concentrations of ETMs (Zn, Cu, Fe, and Ni) may be involved in the development of malignant breast cancer. The findings provide foundations for further exploration of ETMs in the prevention and treatment of breast tumors.

Excess Zinc Supply Reduces Cadmium Uptake and Mitigates Cadmium Toxicity Effects on Chloroplast Structure, Oxidative Stress, and Photosystem II Photochemical Efficiency in Salvia sclarea Plants

Salvia sclarea L. is a Cd2+ tolerant medicinal herb with antifungal and antimicrobial properties cultivated for its pharmacological properties. However, accumulation of high Cd2+ content in its tissues increases the adverse health effects of Cd2+ in humans. Therefore, there is a serious demand to lower human Cd2+ intake. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the mitigative role of excess Zn2+ supply to Cd2+ uptake/translocation and toxicity in clary sage. Salvia plants were treated with excess Cd2+ (100 μM CdSO4) alone, and in combination with Zn2+ (900 μM ZnSO4), in modified Hoagland nutrient solution. The results demonstrate that S. sclarea plants exposed to Cd2+ toxicity accumulated a significant amount of Cd2+ in their tissues, with higher concentrations in roots than in leaves. Cadmium exposure enhanced total Zn2+ uptake but also decreased its translocation to leaves. The accumulated Cd2+ led to a substantial decrease in photosystem II (PSII) photochemistry and disrupted the chloroplast ultrastructure, which coincided with an increased lipid peroxidation. Zinc application decreased Cd2+ uptake and translocation to leaves, while it mitigated oxidative stress, restoring chloroplast ultrastructure. Excess Zn2+ ameliorated the adverse effects of Cd2+ on PSII photochemistry, increasing the fraction of energy used for photochemistry (ΦPSII) and restoring PSII redox state and maximum PSII efficiency (Fv/Fm), while decreasing excess excitation energy at PSII (EXC). We conclude that excess Zn2+ application eliminated the adverse effects of Cd2+ toxicity, reducing Cd2+ uptake and translocation and restoring chloroplast ultrastructure and PSII photochemical efficiency. Thus, excess Zn2+ application can be used as an important method for low Cd2+-accumulating crops, limiting Cd2+ entry into the food chain.

Elevated atmospheric CO2 enhances the phytoremediation efficiency of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) in Cd-polluted soil

With the economic development of society, concentrations of atmospheric CO₂ and heavy metals in soils have been increasing. The physiological responses of plants to the interaction between soil pollution and climatic change need to be understood. Pot experiments were designed to assess variations in Festuca arundinacea dry weight, leaf type, chlorophyll content, antioxidase activities, and Cd accumulation ability, under different atmospheric CO₂ treatments. The results showed that the total dry weights increased with increasing CO₂, and Cd concentrations in falling leaf tissues increased with raised atmospheric CO₂, before reaching a peak at 600 ppm, above which they remained constant. Compared with the control (400 ppm), 600, 650, and 700 ppm CO₂ treatments increased the proportions of the falling tissues by 1.7%, 3.3%, and 4.5%, respectively. Antioxidant enzyme activities in plant leaves increased with increasing atmospheric CO₂ levels. The concentration of H₂O₂ in leaf tissues increased with increasing CO₂, reaching a peak at 600 ppm, and then decreased significantly as the CO₂ content increased further, to 700 ppm. The results in this study suggest that F. arundinacea could be regarded as a potential candidate for phytoremediation of Cd-polluted soil; especially if senescent and dead leaf tissues could be harvested, and that raised atmospheric CO₂ levels could improve its soil remediation efficiency.Novelty statement Extrapolation of results from experiments of environmental impacts in greenhouse to real scale field requires to be considered cautiously. External factors such as water, temperature, humidity, and pollution are variable in real field. Plants will face a lot of beneficial or detrimental conditions which will influence the magnitude of the results. However, the elevation of CO₂ is an inevitable phenomenon in future. Therefore, findings from experiments under artificial conditions are sometime a good choice to obtain knowledge about elevated CO₂ related impacts on phytoremediation efficiency of a specific plant. The final goal of this work is to find a suitable CO₂ fumigation strategy optimized for soil remediation. We report on that elevated atmospheric CO₂ can increase the phytoremediation efficiency of Festuca arundinacea for Cd. This is significant because the combined influences of elevated atmospheric CO₂ and metal pollution in terms of biomass yield, pollutant uptake, and phytoremediation efficiency would be more complex than the effects of each individual factor.

Should I GROW or should I SLOW: A meta-analysis of fast-growing tree-species grown in cadmium perturbed environment

Variations in soil chemical composition may lead to disturbances in plant growth and survival. Which strategies of biomass allocation fast-growing species acquire to overcome the disturbances in the rhizosphere remains an open research challenge. We conducted a series of greenhouse pot experiments to collect enough experimental evidence to elucidate the answer. A tiered analytical approach was applied to collected data to fingerprint both the intraspecies and interspecies differences. We investigated the biomass allocation patterns in Robinia pseudoacacia L., Populus × euramericana, Populus deltoides, Salix alba, Salix matsudana Koidz., and Salix viminalis L. (18 fast-growing genotypes in total) under cadmium-free and cadmium-perturbed soil conditions. Further, we explored the intraspecific and interspecific differences between tested plants and looked for different strategies employed under perturbed conditions. We show that fast-growing species tend to strengthen their roots toward the Cd triggered perturbances in the rhizosphere and allocate more biomass to that plant organ/part. Intraspecies analyses pointed to differences in resource use efficiency and acquisition strategy based on specific leaf area, pointing toward P. deltoides genotypes PE19/66 and PD3, and S. alba B44 as strong, fast-growing oriented genotypes. Others exhibited more or less a conservative resource use and acquisition strategy under perturbed conditions. Our study highlights the intraspecies and interspecies specificity of fast-growing species to Cd occurrence in the rhizosphere. Association of growth traits and Cd-related traits tested with structural equation model highlighted the shoots bioconcentration index as a proxy-trait which directly interplay with the functional traits performance and modify the biomass shift.

Transcriptome Profiling of Cu Stressed Petunia Petals Reveals Candidate Genes Involved in Fe and Cu Crosstalk

Copper (Cu) is an essential element for most living plants, but it is toxic for plants when present in excess. To better understand the response mechanism under excess Cu in plants, especially in flowers, transcriptome sequencing on petunia buds and opened flowers under excess Cu was performed. Interestingly, the transcript level of FIT-independent Fe deficiency response genes was significantly affected in Cu stressed petals, probably regulated by basic-helix-loop-helix 121 (bHLH121), while no difference was found in Fe content. Notably, the expression level of bHLH121 was significantly down-regulated in petals under excess Cu. In addition, the expression level of genes related to photosystem II (PSII), photosystem I (PSI), cytochrome b₆/f complex, the light-harvesting chlorophyll II complex and electron carriers showed disordered expression profiles in petals under excess Cu, thus photosynthesis parameters, including the maximum PSII efficiency (F_V/F_M), nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ), quantum yield of the PSII (ΦPS(II)) and photochemical quenching coefficient (qP), were reduced in Cu stressed petals. Moreover, the chlorophyll a content was significantly reduced, while the chlorophyll b content was not affected, probably caused by the increased expression of chlorophyllide a oxygenase (CAO). Together, we provide new insight into excess Cu response and the Cu–Fe crosstalk in flowers.

Overexpression of FaHSP17.8-CII improves cadmium accumulation and tolerance in tall fescue shoots by promoting chloroplast stability and photosynthetic electron transfer of PSII

Genetic improvement could play a significant role in enhancing the Cd accumulation, translocation and tolerance in plants. In this study, for the first time, we constructed transgenic tall fescue overexpressing a class II (CII) sHSP gene FaHSP17.8-CII, which enhanced Cd tolerance and the root-to-shoot Cd translocation. After exposed to 400 μM CdCl₂, two FaHSP17.8-CII overexpressing lines (OE#3 and OE#7) exhibited 30% and 40% more shoot fresh weight, respectively, relative to the wild-type (WT). Both transgenic lines showed higher tolerance to Cd, as evidenced by lower levels of electrolyte leakage and malondialdehyde compared to the WT plants under Cd stress. FaHSP17.8-CII overexpression increased shoot Cd contents 49-59% over the WT plants. The Cd translocation factor of root-to-shoot in OE grasses was 69-85% greater than WT under Cd stress. Furthermore, overexpression of FaHSP17.8-CII reduced Cd-induced damages of chloroplast ultra-structure and chlorophyll synthesis, and then improved photosystem II (PSII) function under Cd stress, which resulted in less reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation in OE grasses than that in WT exposed to Cd stress. The study suggests a novel FaHSP17.8-CII-PSII-ROS module to understand the mechanisms of Cd detoxification and tolerance, which provides a new strategy to improve phytoremediation efficiency in Cd-stressed grasses.

Zinc promotes cadmium leaf excretion and translocation in tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea)

Phytoexcretion is a novel strategy to remediate cadmium (Cd) pollution by leaf excretion in tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea), which involves the processes of Cd leaf excretion, root-to-leaf translocation, and root uptake. A hydroponic experiment was designed to investigate a series of 11 zinc (Zn) concentrations on Cd leaf excretion in tall fescue under 75 μM Cd stress. The results showed that the promotions of Zn on Cd leaf excretion, root-to-leaf translocation, and leaf accumulation were concentration-dependent in tall fescue. Zn treatments at 90 and 135 μM resulted in the highest Cd leaf excretion with 118.1 and 123.6 mg/kg of Cd excretion amount and 27.0 and 26.6% of excretion ratio, which were 2.6 and 2.7 fold of the control (15 μM of Zn), respectively. Cd leaf excretion was decreased when Zn treatments reached 180 μM, which could be toxic to plants as indicated by the decline of plant biomass. Zn also promoted leaf Cd accumulation and Cd translocation from roots to leaves and reached the highest at 90 and 180 μM respectively. Root Cd accumulation decreased with the increase of Zn concentrations, but the total plant Cd uptake did not decrease significantly until Zn concentration reached 90 μM. Our results indicate that 90 μM of Zn treatment can be served as the threshold to promote Cd leaf excretion and improve the efficiency of Cd phytoexcretion in tall fescue.

Influence of elevated atmospheric CO2 levels on phytoremediation effect of Festuca arundinacea intercropped with Echinochloa caudata

Atmospheric CO₂ levels have been increasing with increasing industrialization. Studies have shown the growth response of various plant species to climate change and increasing CO₂ levels, but variations in phytoremediation caused by elevated CO₂ levels, especially in intercropping systems, have rarely been reported. The current study therefore revealed variations in the phytoremediation effect of Festuca arundinacea intercropped with Echinochloa caudata, a pernicious annual weed, exposed to various CO₂ levels (280, 400, and 550 ppm). The biomass yield and Cd uptake capacity of monocultured F. arundinacea were found to increase with increasing atmospheric CO₂ level, highlighting the promoted phytoremediation efficiency of this species under elevated CO₂ levels. Elevated CO₂ levels also significantly increased the dry weight of monocultured E. caudata but did not change the Cd content in various parts of the plant. However, the intercropping system decreased the biomass yield of belowground and aerial parts of F. arundinacea under all treatments, since E. caudata competed with it for water and nutrients. The weight reduction of F. arundinacea in the intercropping system increased with increasing CO₂ level, because elevated CO₂ significantly increased the competitiveness of the weed. Therefore, the Cd phytoremediation efficiency of F. arundinacea intercropped with E. caudata exposed to 280, 400, and 550 ppm CO₂ decreased by 46.1%, 81.5%, and 215.0%, respectively, as evidenced by the decreased dry weight of F. arundinacea. Therefore, elevated CO₂ levels could decrease the phytoremediation effect of F. arundinacea in fields where weed growth is unavoidable.

Effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi on the growth and toxic element uptake of Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud under zinc/cadmium stress

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) play an important role in improving plant tolerance and accumulation of zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd). The growth, physiology and absorption of elements and transport in Phragmites australis (P. australis) were investigated under Zn and Cd stress to identify the transport mechanisms of toxic trace elements (TE) under the influence of AMF. Thus, AMF were observed to alleviate the toxic effects of Zn and Cd on P. australis by increasing plant biomass and through different regulatory patterns under different TE concentrations. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) increased under Zn stress, and the activities of SOD, catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), and APX significantly increased under high concentrations of Cd. AMF differ in their strategies of regulating the transport of different metals under TE stress. Under Zn stress, the concentration of Zn in P. australis decreased by 10-57%, and the effect on Zn translocation factor (TF_Zn) was concentration-dependent. AMF increased the TF_Zn under low concentration stress, but decreased under high concentration stress. Under Cd stress, the concentration of Cd increased by as much as 17-40%, and the TF_Cd decreased. AMF were also found to change the interaction of Zn×Cd. In the absence of AMF, Cd exposure decreased the Zn concentrations in P. australis at Zn_100 mg/L and Zn_300 mg/L, while it increased the contents of Zn at Zn_700 mg/L. The opposite trend was observed following treatment with AMF. However, regardless of the concentration of Cd, the addition of Zn decreased the concentration of Cd in both treatments in both the presence and absence of AMF. Under different TE stress conditions, the regulation of metal elements by AMF in host plants does not follow a single strategy but a trade-off between different trends of transportations. The findings of our study are important for applying AMF-P. australis systems in the phytoremediation of Zn-Cd co-contaminated ecosystems.

Phytoremediation of soil heavy metals (Cd and Zn) by castor seedlings: Tolerance, accumulation and subcellular distribution

Cd and Zn pollution was observed to often occur simultaneously in soils. However, previous studies focused on single heavy metal instead of Cd and Zn combined pollution. Castor (Ricinus communis) is considered to have great potential for contaminated soil remediation. The resistance of castor seedlings to heavy metals and the mechanism behind it remain unknown. In this study, the tolerance and accumulation ability of castor seedlings to Cd and Zn were investigated, and the accumulation mechanism involving the subcellular distribution in different tissues was further explored. The results on biomass and chlorophyll revealed that castor seedlings have good tolerance to the pollution with 0-5 mg/kg Cd and 380 mg/kg Zn, while not to the heavy pollution with 25 mg/kg Cd and 380 mg/kg Zn. The maximum accumulation concentrations of Cd and Zn, 175.3 mg Cd/kg and 386.8 mg/kg Zn, appeared in castor seedling root instead of stem and leaf, indicating that root played a significant part in accumulating Zn and Cd. The relative low dosage of Cd (0-5 mg/kg) promoted the accumulation of Zn in the subcellular component, while high dosage (25 mg/kg) inhibited the accumulation of Zn. In subcellular accumulation and distribution of castor seedlings, Cd (27.1%-69.4%) and Zn (39.6%-66.6%) in the cell wall was the highest. With the increase of Cd addition, the accumulation of Cd increased in cell wall while decreased in organelle and soluble fraction. Hydroxyl, amino, amides and carboxyl functional groups on cell wall might provided the main binding sites for Cd and Zn.

Cadmium and lead mixtures are less toxic to the Chinese medicinal plant Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort. Than either metal alone

Agricultural production of Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort. is often affected by heavy metal pollution in soil, especially mixtures of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb). We assessed metal-induced phytotoxicity in L. chuanxiong by exposing the plants to soil treated with Cd, Pb, or Cd/Pb mixtures. A combined Cd/Pb treatment alleviated the inhibition in plant growth, photosynthesis, and secondary metabolite generation seen in single-metal exposures in three of the four combinations. Most combined Cd/Pb treatments resulted in preferential uptake of magnesium, copper, and nitrogen in underground plant parts and accumulation of phosphorus and calcium in aboveground plant parts, thereby leading to improvements in photosynthetic potential. Compared with single-metal exposures, combined Cd/Pb treatment significantly decreased the contents of Cd by 16.67%-40.12% and Pb by 10.68%-21.70% in the plant, respectively. At the subcellular level, the Pb presence increased the Cd percentage associated with cell wall from 64.79% to 67.93% in rhizomes and from 32.76% to 45.32% in leaves, while Cd reduced Pb contents by 9.36%-46.39% in the subcellular fractions. A combined Cd/Pb treatment decreased the contents of water- and ethanol-extractable metal forms and increased the contents of acetic acid- and hydrochloric acid-extractable forms. The lower toxic effects of the Cd/Pb mixture in L. chuanxiong were associated with photosynthetic potential, subcellular distribution, the chemical forms of Cd and Pb, and synthesis of secondary metabolites. These findings are useful for plant production strategies in soils contaminated by heavy metals.
