Rational Design and Fabrication of ZnONPs Functionalized Sericin/PVA Antimicrobial Sponge

Development of basil seed mucilage (a heteropolysaccharide) - Polyvinyl alcohol biopolymers incorporating zinc oxide nanoparticles

The effect of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) on various properties of basil seed mucilage (a heteropolysaccharide)-polyvinyl alcohol (BSM-PVA) films was investigated. Increasing concentration of ZnONPs in BSM-PVA films reduced moisture content (from 24.73 to 17.09 %), water solubility (from 36.36 to 27.65 %), water vapor permeability (from 4.66 × 10-7 to 2.55 × 10-7 g·m/m2·Pa·h), oxygen permeability (from 2.96 to 2.13 cm3 μm/m2 d kPa), and elongation at break (from 40.34 to 29.44 %), and increased ultimate tensile strength (from 16.81 to 21.48 MPa). Color and light transmission were affected by ZnONPs concentrations. The lack of formation of new peaks, along with the displacement of peaks, indicated the formation of hydrogen bonds between ZnONPs and the film matrix. Dynamic mechanical-thermal analysis showed that storage modulus and glass transition temperature increased with the concentration of ZnONPs. Scanning electron microscopy images illustrated that the addition of ZnONPs improved film integrity. X-ray diffraction pattern showed that the crystal shape of nanoparticles was preserved in the film matrix. Films containing ZnONPs showed good antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (reductions ≥ 3 log CFU/cm2) and Escherichia coli (reductions ≥ 4 log CFU/cm2). Films containing ZnONPs also showed a suitable antifungal activity during the storage of wheat bread.

Dietary nitrate accelerates the healing of infected skin wounds in mice by increasing microvascular density

As skin injuries resulting from acute trauma, burns, and chronic diseases present significant challenges to healthcare systems worldwide, the promotion of skin wound healing remains an unmet therapeutic area. Dietary nitrate serves as a crucial pathway for the production of nitric oxide, which plays various physiological roles in the body, including vasodilation, increased blood flow, and antioxidant activity. However, the impact of dietary nitrate on skin wound healing remains uncertain. This study aimed to investigate the role of dietary nitrate in infected skin wound healing using a mouse model. We created a full-thickness wound infection model in mice and examine the effects of dietary nitrate (0.5 mmol/kg/d and 1 mmol/kg/d) on wound healing. The results demonstrated that dietary nitrate significantly increased serum nitrate and nitrite levels, leading to accelerated wound healing by increasing microvascular density, promoting collagen deposition and re-epithelialization. Moreover, nitrate supplementation exhibited a certain degree of reduction in inflammatory factors within the body. Our study also found that 1 mmol/kg/d nitrate has a more effective therapeutic effect and can increase blood perfusion and expedite the formation of new blood vessels, thereby promoting skin wound healing. These results indicate that dietary nitrate presents a novel therapeutic approach for infected skin wound healing.

Silk fibroin/polyvinyl alcohol composite film loaded with antibacterial AgNP/polydopamine-modified montmorillonite; characterization and antibacterial properties

In this study, a kind of nanocomposite film was fabricated via combining silk fibroin, polyvinyl alcohol (SF/PVA) and AgNP/polydopamine-modified Montmorillonite (AgNP/PDA-Mt). The structural characteristics and properties of the SF/PVA/AgNP/PDA-Mt nanocomposites films were identified using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Thermal gravimetric analyzer (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), EDS-mapping analyses and Scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results indicated enhanced thermal performance of SF/PVA/AgNP/PDA-Mt nanocomposites with increased AgNP/PDA-Mt weight. The nanocomposite film exhibited excellent antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus. The 2 % SF/PVA/AgNP/PDA-Mt film showed the highest zone of inhibition with an average inhibition circle diameter of 26.1 mm against E. coli and 20.61 mm against S. aureus. Cytotoxicity test results indicated that the nanocomposites films were biocompatible with L929 cells with a 100 % survival rate, which can be considered as one of the advantages of new nanocomposites films. These findings suggest that SF/PVA/AgNP/PDA-Mt films have potential clinical applications in wound dressing and antibacterial biomedical applications.

Bio-based antimicrobial food packaging films based on hydroxypropyl starch/polyvinyl alcohol loaded with the biosynthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles

In the last decades, bio-based active food packaging materials have received much attention. It is known that the utilization of traditional materials for food packaging applications lack some critical characteristics such as resistance to the harmful microbes that cause a damage to the preserved foods. Therefore, the current study aimed to find an alternative packaging films comprises an efficient biopolymers. This research work was designed to prepare film mats using hydroxypropyl starch (HPS), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), palmitic acid (PA) and biosynthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs). The fabricated films were coded as 1H, 2H, 3H and 4H based on the utilized concentration of ZnONPs. The biosynthesized ZnONPs and the bio-based films loaded with ZnONPs were characterized. The results revealed that ZnONPs exhibited nearly spherical shape and size ∼40 nm. The surface structure of the produced bioactive packaging films exhibited smooth with homogeneous features, excellent mechanical and thermal stability properties. The prepared bioactive packaging film loaded with ZnONPs (4H) exhibited superior antibacterial activity among other films against Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 with inhibition zones 15.1 ± 0.76 and 12.1 ± 0.71 mm respectively. Correspondingly, packing film 4H exhibited potential antifungal activity toward Aspergillus niger RCMB 02724, A. flavus RCMB 02782, Penicillium expansum IMI 89372 and Fusarium oxysporum RCMB 001004 with inhibition zones (16 ± 1.0, 22 ± 0.90, 18.0 ± 1.1 and12.3 ± 0.57 mm respectively). Moreover, all prepared films did not show cytotoxicity on the normal cell line (Wi38) and recorded biodegradability properties that reached around 85 % after four weeks in soil. Based on these results, the antimicrobial films comprising HPS/PVA and loaded with the biosynthesized ZnONPs can be considered as a suitable film for food packaging purposes.

Characterization and Evaluation of Silk Sericin-Based Hydrogel: A Promising Biomaterial for Efficient Healing of Acute Wounds

The present study was aimed to prepare the potent silk sericin-based hydrogels in combination with plant extracts (curcumin and banana peel powder) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) to accelerate the acute wound healing process. Experimental excision wounds were created in mice by biopsy puncture, and the wound healing potential of silk sericin (2%)-based hydrogel and its combinations with curcumin (2%), banana peel powder (2%), and AgNPs (2%) was estimated by calculating the percent wound contraction, healing time, histology of skin tissues, and different biochemical tests. The results showed that the mice treated with sericin-based hydrogels showed significantly (P < 0.001) high percent wound contraction as compared to negative control, and wounds were healed in 11 days. The histological evaluation also showed that wounds covered with hydrogels were healed more than the uncovered wounds. Furthermore, the results of biochemical tests revealed that the treatment groups showed a significant (P < 0.001) decrease in the serum level of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6). A significant (P < 0.001) increase in anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-10) and anti-oxidant enzymes was observed in treatment groups. The highest wound healing potential was observed by sericin-based hydrogel containing banana peel powder, leaving behind the commercially available ointment polyfax (positive control). It can be concluded that the silk sericin-based hydrogels in combination with plant extract and AgNPs can be used as natural biomaterials in wound dressing for the rapid healing of acute wounds.

Bactericidal potential of different size sericin-capped silver nanoparticles synthesized by heat, light, and sonication

Present study was aimed to assess the bactericidal potential of sericin-capped silver nanoparticles (Se-AgNPs) synthesized by heat, light, and sonication. Se-AgNPs were characterized by size analyzer, UV spectrophotometry, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Average size of Se-AgNPs synthesized by heat, light and sonication was 53.60, 78.12, and 7.49 nm, respectively. All (10) bacterial strains were exposed to Se-AgNPs prepared from different methods to compare their antibacterial potentials. Largest zone of inhibition (13 ± 1.15 mm) was observed for sonication-based nanoparticles (NPs) against Klebseilla pneumoniae while the smallest zone of light assisted NPs against Serratia rubidaea (5 ± 1 mm). Bacterial strains were also exposed to different concentrations (0.2%, 0.3%, and 0.6%) of Se-AgNPs which showed largest zone (12 ± 1 mm) of inhibition for 0.4% of Se-AgNPs against Protius mirabilis and smallest zone (5 ± 1.154 mm) for 0.3% of Se-AgNPs against Escherichia coli. Furthermore, effect of different temperatures (5°C, 37°C, and 60°C) and pH (3, 7, and 12) on the efficacy and stability of Se-AgNPs was also evaluated against different bacterial strains. Sonication mediated NPs showed highest bactericidal results against K. pneumoniae (F3,8  = 6.154; p = 0.018) with smallest size NPs (7.49 nm) while lowest bactericidal results against S. rubidaea (5 ± 1 mm) were shown with largest size (78.12 nm) NPs prepared by natural light. These variations of bactericidal activities of NPs with difference size endorse that the Se-AgNPs with smallest size have highest antibacterial activity than larger size NPs. Moreover, Se-AgNPs maintain their bactericidal potency at wide range of temperature and pH, hence seemed stable.

Natural biomarocmolecule-based antimicrobial hydrogel for rapid wound healing: A review

Antibacterial hydrogels are a type of hydrogel that is designed to inhibit the growth of bacteria and prevent infections. These hydrogels typically contain antibacterial agents that are either integrated into the polymer network or coated onto the surface of the hydrogel. The antibacterial agents in these hydrogels can work through a variety of mechanisms, such as disrupting bacterial cell walls or inhibiting bacterial enzyme activity. Some examples of antibacterial agents that are commonly used in hydrogels include silver nanoparticles, chitosan, and quaternary ammonium compounds. Antibacterial hydrogels have a wide range of applications, including wound dressings, catheters, and medical implants. They can help to prevent infections, reduce inflammation, and promote tissue healing. In addition, they can be designed with specific properties to suit different applications, such as high mechanical strength or controlled release of antibacterial agents over time. Hydrogel wound dressings have come a long way in recent years, and the future looks very promising for these innovative wound care products. Overall, the future of hydrogel wound dressings is very promising, and we can expect to see continued innovation and advancement in this field in the years to come.

Immunomodulatory zinc-based materials for tissue regeneration

Zinc(Zn)-based materials have contributed greatly to the rapid advancements in tissue engineering. The qualities they possess that make them so beneficial include their excellent biodegradability, biocompatibility, anti-bacterial activity, among and several others. Biomedical materials that act as a foreign body, will inevitably cause host immune response when introduced to the human body. As the osteoimmunology develops, the immunomodulatory characteristics of biomaterials have become an appealing concept to improve implant-tissue interaction and tissue restoration. Recently, Zn-based materials have also displayed immunomodulatory functions, especially macrophage polarization states. It can promote the transformation of M1 macrophages into M2 macrophages to enhance the tissue regeneration and reconstruction. This review covers mainly Zn-based materials and their characteristics, including metallic Zn alloys and Zn ceramics. We highlight the current advancements in the type of immune responses, as well as the mechanisms, that are induced by Zn-based biomaterials, most importantly the regulation of innate immunity and the mechanism of promoting tissue regeneration. To this end, we discuss their applications in biomedicine, and conclude with an outlook on future research challenges.

Heparin-based sericin hydrogel-encapsulated basic fibroblast growth factor for in vitro and in vivo skin repair

The treatment of full-thickness cutaneous wounds remains a significant challenge in clinical therapeutics. Exogenous growth factor (GF) has been applied in clinics to promote wound healing. However, the retention of GF on the wound bed after its direct application to the wound surface is difficult. Moreover, growth factors (GFs) are always inactivated in the complex wound healing microenvironment due to various factors, which significantly decrease the therapeutic effect. Sericin hydrogel (S) can be used as an effective carrier for GFs owing to its low immunogenicity, good biocompatibility, and good healing-promoting ability. Here, we designed a heparin-based sericin hydrogel (HS) -encapsulated basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF-HS) to facilitate wound healing and skin regeneration. The hydrogel exhibited a three-dimensional (3D) microporous structure, excellent biodegradability, good adhesiveness, and low cytotoxicity. In vitro release of bFGF from bFGF-HS coacervates revealed that bFGF-HS might control the release of bFGF within 25 days through heparin regulation. bFGF-HS significantly promoted vascularization and re-epithelialization and improved collagen deposition, ultimately accelerating wound healing in vivo in mice. bFGF-HS treated wounds were also found to have more hair follicles and milder inflammatory reactions. Overall, this study provides a new therapeutic approach for full-thickness skin defect wounds using bFGF-HS.

Silk proteins in reconstructive surgery: Do they possess an inherent antibacterial activity? A systematic review

The field of reconstructive surgery encompasses a wide range of surgical procedures and regenerative approaches to treat various tissue types. Every surgical procedure is associated with the risk of surgical site infections, which are not only a financial burden but also increase patient morbidity. The surgical armamentarium in this area are biomaterials, particularly natural, biodegradable, biocompatible polymers, including the silk proteins fibroin (SF) and sericin (SS). Silk is known to be derived from silkworms and is mainly composed of 60-80% fibroin, which provides the structural form, and 15-35% sericin, which acts as a glue-like substance for the SF threads. Silk proteins possess most of the desired properties for biomedical applications, including biocompatibility, biodegradability, minimal immunogenicity, and tunable biomechanical behaviour. In an effort to alleviate or even prevent infections associated with the use of biomaterials in surgery, antibacterial/antimicrobial properties have been investigated in numerous studies. In this systematic review, the following question was addressed: Do silk proteins, SF and SS, possess an intrinsic antibacterial property and how could these materials be tailored to achieve such a property?

Fabrication of mechanically advanced polydopamine decorated hydroxyapatite/polyvinyl alcohol bio-composite for biomedical applications: In-vitro physicochemical and biological evaluation

In this study, polydopamine (PDA) coated hydroxyapatite (HA) reinforced polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) films were produced to be used in biomedical applications such as bone tissue regeneration. pDA is coated not only to prevent the agglomeration of HA when encountering interstitial fluids but also to strongly bind the PVA for the interaction between materials so that the mechanical performance becomes more stabilized. pDA was coated on the hydroxyapatite surface using a radical polymerization technique, and the reinforced PVA were produced with pDA-coated HA (pDA-HA/PVA) nanoparticles. Fundamental characteristic properties of pDA-HA/PVA nanocomposite films were examined by morphological/chemical (SEM-EDS), microstructural (XRD, Ft-IR, and Raman), thermodynamic (TGA and TM), mechanical performance (Vickers microhardness) and biological activity analysis (MTT, genotoxicity and antimicrobial efficacy investigations). Physicochemical analysis showed that all the samples studied exhibited homogeneous mineral distributions through the main structures. According to TGA, TMA and hardness tests, the new composite structure possessed higher mechanical properties than neat PVA. Further, pDA-HA/PVA nanocomposites exhibited high antibacterial capacities against Acinetobacter Baumannii (A.Baumannii), Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), and Streptococcus mutans (S.mutans). Moreover, the new nanocomposites were noted to present good biocompatibility for fibroblast (L929) cells and to support remarkably MCS cells. All in all, this comprehensive work shows that the thermo-mechanically improved pDA-HA/PVA films will increase the application fields of PVA in biomedical fields especially tooth-bone treatments for coating, filling, or occlusion purposes.

Silk Sericin: A Promising Sustainable Biomaterial for Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Applications

Silk is a natural composite fiber composed mainly of hydrophobic fibroin and hydrophilic sericin, produced by the silkworm Bombyx mori. In the textile industry, the cocoons of B. mori are processed into silk fabric, where the sericin is substantially removed and usually discarded in wastewater. This wastewater pollutes the environment and water sources. However, sericin has been recognized as a potential biomaterial due to its biocompatibility, immunocompatibility, biodegradability, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant and photoprotective properties. Moreover, sericin can produce hydrogels, films, sponges, foams, dressings, particles, fibers, etc., for various biomedical and pharmaceutical applications (e.g., tissue engineering, wound healing, drug delivery, cosmetics). Given the severe environmental pollution caused by the disposal of sericin and its beneficial properties, there has been growing interest in upcycling this biomaterial, which could have a strong and positive economic, social and environmental impact.

Multifunctional dual cross-linked poly (vinyl alcohol)/methacrylate hyaluronic acid/chitooligosaccharide-sinapic acid wound dressing hydrogel

Wound dressing hydrogel with multifunctional properties, including antioxidant and antimicrobial properties and appropriate mechanical, biological, and physical properties is of great interest in wound healing application and it is still a challenge. In the present study, chitooligosaccharides (COS)/ sinapic acid (SA) conjugate (COS-SA) was synthesized using H₂O₂-induced grafting polymerization, and photo cross-linkable hyaluronic acid was synthesized using methacrilation (HAMA). The synthesis of COS-SA and HAMA was confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, ultraviolet spectroscopy, and polyphenol assay. Subsequently, we developed duel cross-linked polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/HAMA composite hydrogel encapsulated with COS-SA as an antioxidant and antimicrobial dressing for full-thickness wound healing application. The chemical, physical, mechanical, antioxidant, antimicrobial, in vitro biocompatibility, and in vivo wound healing properties of hydrogels were subsequently investigated. The results showed that the fabricated composite hydrogel had a uniform porous architecture, excellent fluid absorbability, and appropriate mechanical stability. The introduction of COSs-SA conjugate remarkably enhanced the in vitro biocompatibility, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties of the hydrogel, leading to the significant promotion of in vivo full-thickness wound closure, re-epithelization, granulation tissue formation, and collagen deposition indicating that COSs-SA incorporated PVA/HAMA hydrogel wound dressing has significant potential for chronic wound healing application.

Silk sericin stabilized proanthocyanidins for synergetic alleviation of ulcerative colitis

Silk sericin (SS) has become a noticeable drug nanocarrier due to its excellent biocompatibility and bioactivity. To further extend the application of SS, a facile one-step process was constructed to fabricate SS-stabilized-drug composites. Various insoluble drugs can be encapsulated into SS with high loading amount, and showed good dispersity in aqueous solution. For example, proanthocyanidins (PAC), a natural polyphenol with initial antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, can be loaded on SS to form SS/PAC composites. The SS/PAC can disperse uniformly in aqueous solution with an average particle diameter of ~136 nm, and showed high drug loading amount of 1767 mg/g. The SS/PAC exhibited high antioxidant efficiency and excellent biocompatibility (non-irritant, non-hemolysis, and non-cytotoxicity), could remarkably alleviate the symptoms of dextran sulfate sodium-induced ulcerative colitis by decreasing the disease activity index scores, inhibiting the shortening of colon length, regulating oxidative stress, suppressing inflammation, and reversing the histopathological injuries. This work provides a simple method to fabricate SS-stabilized-drug composites, promises high potential in therapeutic and pharmaceutical applications.

Vanillin enhances the antibacterial and antioxidant properties of polyvinyl alcohol-chitosan hydrogel dressings

Wound management requires the preparation of controllable, safe and effective dressings to isolate the wound from the external environment. Currently, widely used commercial dressings focus on the isolation effect rather than an environment conducive to wound healing. To provide the dressing with beneficial properties such as wetting and antioxidant and antibacterial activity, this study used polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel as the base material and introduced chitosan (CS) and vanillin (V) to design a PVA/CS/V three-phase hydrogel dressing. The dressings were prepared using a freeze-thaw cycle to achieve properties. We conducted a comparative analysis of PVA/V and PVA/CS two-phase hydrogels. The PVA/CS/V (PCV) hydrogel dressing maintaining an elastic modulus at >5 kPa at 15-40 °C. An in vitro antibacterial assay showed the potent antibacterial ability of hydrogels against gram-positive and -negative bacteria, and cells in some PCV groups showed higher activity. The antioxidant results showed that PCV hydrogel had a potent scavenging effect on DPPH, ABTS⁺, and PTIO free radical. The antibacterial and antioxidant properties of three-phase hydrogel showed the best performance in all experimental groups. These results suggest that PCV hydrogel has value in commercial applications due to its simple preparation process and excellent biological properties.

An injectable gelatin/sericin hydrogel loaded with human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells for the treatment of uterine injury

Abnormal endometrial receptivity is a major cause of the failure of embryo transplantation, which may lead to infertility, adverse pregnancy, and neonatal outcomes. While hormonal treatment has dramatically improved the fertility outcomes in women with endometriosis, a substantial unmet need persists in the treatment. In this study, methacrylate gelatin (GelMA) and methacrylate sericin (SerMA) hydrogel with human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (HUMSC) encapsulation was designed for facilitating endometrial regeneration and fertility restoration through in situ injection. The presented GelMA/10%SerMA hydrogel showed appropriate swelling ratio, good mechanical properties, and degradation stability. In vitro cell experiments showed that the prepared hydrogels had excellent biocompatibility and cell encapsulation ability of HUMSC. Further in vivo experiments demonstrated that GelMA/SerMA@HUMSC hydrogel could increase the thickness of endometrium and improve the endometrial interstitial fibrosis. Moreover, regenerated endometrial tissue was more receptive to transfer embryos. Summary, we believed that GelMA/SerMA@HUMSC hydrogel will hold tremendous promise to repair or regenerate damaged endometrium.

Zinc Oxide and Copper Chitosan Composite Films with Antimicrobial Activity

The role of the oral microbiome and its effect on dental diseases is gaining interest. Therefore, it has been sought to decrease the bacterial load to fight oral cavity diseases. In this study, composite materials based on chitosan, chitosan crosslinked with glutaraldehyde, chitosan with zinc oxide particles, and chitosan with copper nanoparticles were prepared in the form of thin films, to evaluate a new alternative with a more significant impact on the oral cavity bacteria. The chemical structures and physical properties of the films were characterized using by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR,) Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), elemental analysis (EDX), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and contact angle measurements. Subsequently, the antimicrobial activity of each material was evaluated by agar diffusion tests. No differences were found in the hydrophilicity of the films with the incorporation of ZnO or copper particles. Antimicrobial activity was found against S. aureus in the chitosan film crosslinked with glutaraldehyde, but not in the other compositions. In contrast antimicrobial activity against S. typhimurium was found in all films. Based on the data of present investigation, chitosan composite films could be an option for the control of microorganisms with potential applications in various fields, such as medical and food industry.

Precise Control of the Surface and Internal Morphologies of Porous Particles Prepared Using a Spontaneous Emulsification Method

Porous particles with controllable surface and internal morphologies were successfully prepared by a "one-step mechanical emulsification" technique via the control of spontaneous emulsification where self-emulsification is followed by mechanical emulsification. The morphological changes in the porous particles were determined not by the preparation conditions of the water-in-oil-in-water (w/o/w) emulsion but by the proportion of solvents that favors the stabilization of the spontaneously prepared water-in-oil (w/o) emulsion droplets acting as porogens. The proposed method for controlling the morphology of the porous particles could be applied to all particle-preparation systems based on emulsion-solvent evaporation using organic solvents. The methodology for the morphological control of porous particles independent of the concentration or composition of the polymer is considered valuable for future investigations into the aerodynamic performance and drug-release behavior of biomedical porous particles with complex shapes.

Rational Design of Ag/ZnO Hybrid Nanoparticles on Sericin/Agarose Composite Film for Enhanced Antimicrobial Applications

Silver-based hybrid nanomaterials are receiving increasing attention as potential alternatives for traditional antimicrobial agents. Here, we proposed a simple and eco-friendly strategy to efficiently assemble zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on sericin-agarose composite film to impart superior antimicrobial activity. Based on a layer-by-layer self-assembly strategy, AgNPs and ZnO were immobilized on sericin-agarose films using the adhesion property of polydopamine. Scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray powder diffraction spectroscopy were used to show the morphology of AgNPs and ZnO on the surface of the composite film and analyze the composition and structure of AgNPs and ZnO, respectively. Water contact angle, swelling ratio, and mechanical property were determined to characterize the hydrophilicity, water absorption ability, and mechanical properties of the composite films. In addition, the antibacterial activity of the composite film was evaluated against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The results showed that the composite film not only has desirable hydrophilicity, high water absorption ability, and favorable mechanical properties but also exhibits excellent antimicrobial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It has shown great potential as a novel antimicrobial biomaterial for wound dressing, artificial skin, and tissue engineering.

Pharmaceutical applications of silk sericin

Silk sericin is an applicable protein extracted from dried silk cocoons, which are composed of a polar amino acid chain with hydroxyl, carboxyl, and amino functional groups. It anticipated that the functionality present in sericin provides excellent assets such as stability, release-modifying capacity, interaction with molecules, etc. It has various significant properties like biocompatibility, biodegradability, non-toxicity, hydrophilicity, etc. Besides, sericin exhibits the capability to form gels, nanoparticles, micro-particles, and keen bioengineered materials. Sericin also offers stability by strong affinity to the drug substance/molecules. Currently, sericin reconnoitered for a variety of pharmaceutical applications including solubility enhancement, release modifications, formulation stabilization, and as a drug carrier, etc. The focus of the review is to deliver an impression of the sericin based pharmaceutical applications including nanocrystal and nanoparticle stabilization, inhibition of devitrification, solubility enhancement, controlled and the extended-release formulation, targeted drug delivery, wound healing applications and as a suitable carrier.
