Abstract
OBJECTIVES Polygenic scores (PGS) for sleep disturbances and depressive symptoms in an epidemiological cohort were contrasted. The overlap between genes assigned to variants that compose the PGS predictions was tested to explore the shared genetic bases of sleep problems and depressive symptoms. METHODS PGS analysis was performed on the São Paulo Epidemiologic Sleep Study (EPISONO, N = 1042), an adult epidemiological sample. A genome wide association study (GWAS) for depression grounded the PGS calculations for Beck Depression Index (BDI), while insomnia GWAS based the PGS for Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) and Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Pearson's correlation was applied to contrast PGS and clinical scores. Fisher's Exact and Benjamin-Hochberg tests were used to verify the overlaps between PGS-associated genes and the pathways enriched among their intersections. RESULTS All PGS models were significant when individuals were divided as cases or controls according to BDI (R2 = 1.2%, p = 0.00026), PSQI (R2 = 3.3%, p = 0.007) and ISI (R2 = 3.4%, p = 0.021) scales. When clinical scales were used as continuous variables, the PGS models for BDI (R2 = 1.5%, p = 0.0004) and PSQI scores (R2 = 3.3%, p = 0.0057) reached statistical significance. PSQI and BDI scores were correlated, and the same observation was applied to their PGS. Genes assigned to variants that compose the best-fit PGS predictions for sleep quality and depressive symptoms were significantly overlapped. Pathways enriched among the intersect genes are related to synapse function. CONCLUSIONS The genetic bases of sleep quality and depressive symptoms are correlated; their implicated genes are significantly overlapped and converge on neural pathways. This data suggests that sleep complaints accompanying depressive symptoms are not secondary issues, but part of the core mental illness.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Epilepsy and depression have complicated bidirectional relationships. Our study aimed to explore the field of epilepsy comorbid with depression in a bibliometric perspective from 2014-2023.
AIM To improve our understanding of epilepsy and depression by evaluating the relationship between epilepsy and depression, bibliometric analyses were performed.
METHODS Epilepsy and depression-related publications from the last decade were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection. We conducted bibliometric and visual analysis using VOSviewer and CiteSpace, examining authorships, countries, institutions, journals of publication, co-citations of references, connections between keywords, clusters of keywords, and keywords with citation bursts.
RESULTS Over the past ten years, we collected 1045 research papers focusing on the field of epilepsy and comorbid depression. Publications on epilepsy and depression have shown a general upward trend over time, though with some fluctuations. The United States, with 287 articles, and the University of Melbourne, contributing 34 articles, were the top countries and institutions, respectively. In addition, in the field of epilepsy and depression, Professor Lee, who has published 30 articles, was the most contributing author. The hot topics pay attention to the quality of life in patients with epilepsy and depression.
CONCLUSION We reported that quality of life and stigma in patients with epilepsy comorbid with depression are possible future hot topics and directions in the field of epilepsy and depression research.

Abstract
Currently, there is a major challenge in distinguishing between unipolar and bipolar major depressive episode. A significant body of research has been dedicated to identifying biomarkers that can aid in this differentiation due to its crucial implications, particularly for therapeutic and prognostic purposes. Among the biomarkers of interest, markers related to sleep and circadian rhythms show promise and could potentially aid in making this distinction. Nevertheless, no study has simultaneously examined sleep-wake disorders, circadian rhythms, and seasonal patterns using both subjective and objective measures. This study aims to characterize and compare the sleep-wake and rhythm disorders including patients with unipolar major depressive episode (n = 72) and with bipolar major depressive episode (n = 43) using both subjective markers (using self-report questionnaires and sleep complaints) and objective markers (using actigraphy). Patients with unipolar major depressive episode seem to experience significantly poorer quality of sleep, more symptoms of insomnia and lower sleep efficiency compared to patients with bipolar major depressive episode. On the other hand, patients with bipolar major depressive episode exhibit significantly more symptoms of motor retardation and hypersomnia compared to patients with unipolar disorder. These results hold significant implications for identifying individuals with unipolar major depressive episode or bipolar major depressive episode using sleep and circadian markers, and for developing recommended and personalized therapeutic strategies.

Abstract
Sleep disorders have become increasingly prevalent, with many adults worldwide reporting sleep dissatisfaction. Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and Bipolar Disorder (BD) are common conditions associated with disrupted sleep patterns such as insomnia and hypersomnolence. These sleep disorders significantly affect the progression, severity, treatment, and outcome of unipolar and bipolar depression. While there is evidence of a connection between sleep disorders and depression, it remains unclear if sleep features differ between MDD and BD. In light of this, this narrative review aims to: (1) summarize findings on common sleep disorders like insomnia and hypersomnolence, strongly linked to MDD and BD; (2) propose a novel psychometric approach to assess sleep in individuals with depressive disorders. Despite insomnia seems to be more influent in unipolar depression, while hypersomnolence in bipolar one, there is no common agreement. So, it is essential adopting a comprehensive psychometric protocol for try to fill this gap. Understanding the relationship between sleep and MDD and BD disorders are crucial for effective management and better quality of life for those affected.

Abstract
Cognitive dysfunction was a common symptom of major depressive disorder (MDD). In previous studies, psychological stress leads to activation and proliferation of microglial cells in different brain regions. Quercetin, a bioflavonoid derived from vegetables and fruits, exerts anti-inflammatory effects in various diseases. To demonstrate the role of quercetin in the hippocampal inflammatory response in depress mice. The chronic unpredictable stress (CUS) depressive mice model built is used to explore the protective effects of quercetin on depression. Neurobehavioral test, protein expression of NOD-like receptor thermal protein domain associated protein 3 (NLRP3) and heat shock protein 90 (HSP90), and cytokines (IL-6, IL-1β, MCP-1, and TNF-α) were assessed. Quercetin ameliorated depressive-like behavior and cognitive impairment, and quercetin attenuates neuroinflammation and by targeting HSP90 to inhibit NLRP3 inflammasome activation. Quercetin inhibited the increase of HSP90 levels in the hippocampus and reverses inflammation-induced cognitive impairment. Besides, quercetin inhibited the increased level of cytokines (IL-6, IL-1β, MCP-1, and TNF-α) in the hippocampus of the depressive model mouse and the increased level of cytokines (IL-6, IL-1β, and MCP-1) in microglia. The current study indicated that quercetin mitigated depressive-like behavior and by targeting HSP90 to inhibit NLRP3 inflammasome activation in microglia and depressive mice model, meanwhile ameliorated cognitive impairment in depression. Quercetin has huge potential for the novel pharmacological efficacy of antidepressant therapy.

Abstract
Single-channel EEG based sleep staging is of interest to researchers due to its broad application prospect in daily sleep monitoring recently. We proposed using contextual scalograms as input and developed a convolutional neural network with attention modules named Co-ScaleNet for sleep staging. The contextual scalograms were obtained by combining the same color channels of three original RGB scalograms from consecutive epochs, and a simple and efficient data augmentation was designed according to their various forms. The Co-ScaleNet consists of two main parts. Firstly, three parallel convolutional branches with attention modules correspondingly extract and fuse features from contextual scalograms at the top layers. The remaining part is a stack of lightweight blocks. We achieved an overall accuracy of 87.0% for healthy individuals, 84.7% for depressed patients. And we obtained comparable performance on the public Sleep-EDFx (82.8%), ISRUC (84.6%) and SHHS datasets (87.7%), including a high recall of N1. The contextual scalograms of R channel as input achieved the best performance, which conform to the features of interest in visual scoring. The attention modules improved the recall of N1 and N3. Overall, the contextual scalograms provided a novel scheme for both contextual information extraction and data augmentation. Our study successfully expanded its application to depression datasets, as well as patients with sleep apnea, demonstrating its wide applicability.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depressive disorder is a chronic mental illness characterized by persistent low mood as its primary clinical symptom. Currently, psychotherapy and drug therapy stand as the primary treatment modalities in clinical practice, offering a certain degree of relief from negative emotions for patients. Nevertheless, sole reliance on drug therapy exhibits a delayed impact on neurotransmitters, and long-term usage often results in adverse side effects such as nausea, drowsiness, and constipation, significantly impeding medication adherence. This study aims to investigate the impact of combining transcranial magnetic stimulation with sertraline on the cognitive level, inflammatory response, and neurological function in patients with depressive disorder who engage in non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) behavior. METHODS A total of 130 depressive patients NSSI behavior, who were admitted to our hospital from December 2020 to February 2023, were selected as the subjects for this research. The single-group (65 cases) received treatment with oral sertraline hydrochloride tablets, while the combination group (65 cases) underwent repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in conjunction with sertraline. The Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) was utilized to assess the depression status and cognitive function levels of both groups. Additionally, the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was employed to measure serum levels of inflammatory factors, including tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and interleukin-6 (IL-6). Furthermore, serum levels of neurotransmitters (norepinephrine (NE), dopamine (DA), 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)) and neuro-cytokines (brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), nerve growth factor (NGF), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP)) were assessed. The clinical effects of the interventions on both groups were then evaluated. RESULTS Following the treatment, the combination group exhibited significantly higher levels of immediate memory, delayed memory, attention, visual function, and language function compared to the single group, with statistically significant differences (p < 0.05). Additionally, the serum levels of TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and GFAP in the combination group were lower than those in the single group, while the levels of BDNF and NGF were higher in the combination group compared to the single group. These differences were also statistically significant (p < 0.05). Simultaneously, the total clinical effective rate in the combination group reached 95.38%, surpassing the 84.61% observed in the single group, and the disparity between the two groups was statistically significant (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The combined use of rTMS and sertraline in treating patients with depressive disorder exhibiting NSSI behavior has proven to be effective in enhancing cognitive function, mitigating inflammatory responses, and elevating levels of neurotransmitters and nerve cytokines in the patients.

Abstract
Insomnia represents a significant public health burden, with a 10% prevalence in the general population. Reduced sleep affects social and working functioning, productivity, and patient's quality of life, leading to a total of $100 billion per year in direct and indirect healthcare costs. Primary insomnia is unrelated to any other mental or medical illness; secondary insomnia co-occurs with other underlying medical, iatrogenic, or mental conditions. Epidemiological studies found a 40-50% comorbidity prevalence between insomnia and psychiatric disorders, suggesting a high relevance of mental health in insomniacs. Sleep disturbances also worsen the outcomes of several psychiatric disorders, leading to more severe psychopathology and incomplete remission, plausibly contributing to treatment-resistant conditions. Insomnia and psychiatric disorder coexistence can lead to polypharmacy, namely, the concurrent use of two or more medications in the same patient, regardless of their purpose or rationale. Polypharmacy increases the risk of using unnecessary drugs, the likelihood of drug interactions and adverse events, and reduces the patient's compliance due to regimen complexity. The workup of insomnia must consider the patient's sleep habits and inquire about any medical and mental concurrent conditions that must be handled to allow insomnia to be remitted adequately. Monotherapy or limited polypharmacy should be preferred, especially in case of multiple comorbidities, promoting multipurpose molecules with sedative properties and with bedtime administration. Also, non-pharmacological interventions for insomnia, such as sleep hygiene, relaxation training and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy may be useful in secondary insomnia to confront behaviors and thoughts contributing to insomnia and help optimizing the pharmacotherapy. However, insomnia therapy should always be patient-tailored, considering drug indications, contraindications, and pharmacokinetics, besides insomnia phenotype, clinical picture, patient preferences, and side effect profile.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Poor sleep is common in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and may be associated with overall worse disease outcomes. While the sleep/IBD literature is growing, the data are often self-reported. Further, much of the research using objective measures of sleep architecture, or the overall pattern of sleep depth, rely on single-night assessments, which can be of questionable validity. DESIGN Participants with IBD and healthy controls were recruited from Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center as part of a two-phase clinical trial. Sleep architecture was assessed using three nights of in-home electroencephalographic monitoring and scored according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine guidelines. RESULTS Our sample included 15 participants with IBD and 8 healthy controls. Participants with IBD were more psychiatrically complex, with more self-reported insomnia, anxiety and depression. Participants with IBD evidenced greater microarousals than healthy controls. In participants with IBD, microarousals were associated with lower insomnia and greater depression scores. Within IBD, participants with clinically significant insomnia evidenced trend towards lower sleep efficiency, while self-reported disease activity did not significantly impact findings. CONCLUSIONS The methodology of past research may have impacted findings, including the reliance on single-night assessments and limited generalisability. Future research that uses robust, multinight assessments of sleep architecture in large, diverse samples is clearly warranted, as is research exploring the impact of cognitive and behavioural factors on sleep architecture and arousal. Abstract
Subjective-objective discrepancies in sleep onset latency (SOL), which is often observed among psychiatric patients, is attributed partly to the definition of sleep onset. Recently, instead of SOL, latency to persistent sleep (LPS), which is defined as the duration from turning out the light to the first consecutive minutes of non-wakefulness, has been utilized in pharmacological studies. This study aimed to determine the non-awake time in LPS that is most consistent with subjective sleep onset among patients with psychiatric disorders. We calculated the length of non-awake time in 30-s segments from lights-out to 0.5-60 min. The root mean square error was then calculated to determine the most appropriate length. The analysis of 149 patients with psychiatric disorders showed that the optimal non-awake time in LPS was 12 min. On the other hands, when comorbid with moderate or severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), the optimal length was 19.5 min. This study indicates that 12 min should be the best fit for the LPS non-awake time in patients with psychiatric disorders. When there is comorbidity with OSA, however, a longer duration should be considered. Measuring LPS minimizes discrepancies in SOL and provides important clinical information.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and insomnia symptoms are common in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), which might lead to a poor prognosis and an increased risk of depression relapse. The current study aimed to investigate the prevalence, and sociodemographic and clinical correlates of EDS and insomnia symptoms among adolescents with MDD. METHODS The sample of this cross-sectional study included 297 adolescents (mean age=15.26 years; range=12-18 years; 218 females) with MDD recruited from three general and four psychiatric hospitals in five cities (Hefei, Bengbu, Fuyang, Suzhou, and Ma'anshan) in Anhui Province, China between January and August, 2021. EDS and insomnia symptoms, and clinical severity of depressive symptoms were assessed using Epworth sleepiness scale, Insomnia Severity Index, and Clinical Global Impression-Severity. RESULTS The prevalence of EDS and insomnia symptoms in adolescents with MDD was 39.7% and 38.0%, respectively. Binary logistic regression analyses showed that EDS symptoms were significantly associated with higher body mass index (odds ratio [OR]=1.097, 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.027-1.172), more severe depressive symptoms (OR=1.313, 95% CI=1.028-1.679), and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors use (OR=2.078, 95% CI=1.199-3.601). And insomnia symptoms were positively associated with female sex (OR=1.955, 95% CI=1.052-3.633), suicide attempts (OR=1.765, 95% CI=1.037-3.005), more severe depressive symptoms (OR=2.031, 95% CI=1.523-2.709), and negatively associated with antipsychotics use (OR=0.433, 95% CI=0.196-0.952). CONCLUSION EDS and insomnia symptoms are common among adolescents with MDD. Considering their negative effects on the clinical prognosis, regular screening and clinical managements should be developed for this patient population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Since insomnia and depression are interrelated, improved sleep early in antidepressant pharmacotherapy may predict a positive treatment outcome. We investigated whether early insomnia improvement (EII) predicted treatment outcome in psychotic depression (PD) and examined if there was an interaction effect between EII and treatment type to assess if findings were treatment-specific. METHODS This study is a secondary analysis of a randomized trial comparing 7 weeks treatment with the antidepressants venlafaxine, imipramine and venlafaxine plus the antipsychotic quetiapine in PD ( n = 114). Early insomnia improvement, defined as ≥20% reduced insomnia after 2 weeks, was assessed by the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-D-17). Associations between EII and treatment outcome were examined using logistic regressions. Subsequently, we added interaction terms between EII and treatment type to assess interaction effects. The predictive value of EII was compared with early response on overall depression (≥20% reduced HAM-D-17 score after 2 weeks). RESULTS EII was associated with response (odds ratio [OR], 7.9; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.7-23.4; P = <0.001), remission of depression (OR, 6.1; 95% CI, 1.6-22.3; P = 0.009), and remission of psychosis (OR, 4.1; 95% CI, 1.6-10.9; P = 0.004). We found no interaction effects between EII and treatment type on depression outcome. Early insomnia improvement and early response on overall depression had a comparable predictive ability for treatment outcome. CONCLUSIONS Early insomnia improvement was associated with a positive outcome in pharmacotherapy of PD, regardless of the medication type. Future studies are needed to confirm our findings and to examine the generalizability of EII as predictor in treatment of depression.

Abstract
The relationship between depression and insomnia is bidirectional and both conditions need to be treated adequately, especially in a vulnerable neurodevelopmental stage of adolescence. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of antidepressant treatment using vortioxetine (VOR) on the sleep architecture of depressed adolescents by using video-polysomnography (v-PSG), which has not been researched before. The v-PSG was performed on 30 adolescent in-patients (mean age of 15.0 years ± 1.5 SD, 21 girls) treated with VOR (dosage of 10/15/20 mg/day) administered orally once a day, before and after VOR treatment. The evaluated parameters were conventional sleep parameters, sleep fragmentation parameters, and selected spectral power indices. Symptoms of depression and insomnia before and after the treatment period were evaluated using valid and reliable questionnaires (the Children´s Depression Inventory and the Athens Insomnia Scale). Depressed adolescents showed higher REM latency and decreased REM sleep percentage after treatment than before the treatment period (p = 0.005, p = 0.009, respectively). Our study revealed REM suppression (increased REM latency and reduced REM sleep percentage), indicating altered sleep architecture as a potential result of VOR treatment, which seems to be dose-dependent.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Sleep-related adverse effects during acute treatment with antidepressants undermine adherence and impede remission. We aimed to address subtypes of sleep-related adverse effects and depict the relationship between dose and sleep-related adverse events. METHODS We searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Web of Science for double-blind randomized controlled trials of depression published before April 30th, 2023. Eligible studies reporting sleep-related adverse effects during short-term monotherapy were included. The odds ratios (ORs) for sleep-related adverse effects were addressed with network meta-analysis. A Bayesian approach was used to depict the dose-effect relationship. Heterogeneity among studies was assessed using the τ2 and I2 statistics. Sensitivity analyses were performed without studies featuring high risk of bias. RESULTS Studies with 64 696 patients were examined from 216 trials. Compared to placebo, 13 antidepressants showed higher ORs for somnolence, of which fluvoxamine (OR = 6.32; 95% CI: 3.56 to 11.21) ranked the top. Eleven had higher risks for insomnia, reboxetine ranked the top (OR = 3.47; 95% CI: 2.77 to 4.36). The dose-effect relationships curves between somnolence or insomnia and dose included linear shape, inverted U-shape, and other shapes. There was no significant heterogeneity among individual studies. The quality of evidence for results in network meta-analyses was rated as very low to moderate by Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation. CONCLUSIONS Most antidepressants had higher risks for insomnia or somnolence than placebo. The diverse relationship curves between somnolence or insomnia and dose of antidepressants can guide clinicians to adjust the doses. These findings suggest clinicians pay more attention to sleep-related adverse effects during acute treatment with antidepressants.

Abstract
Siraitia grosvenorii (SG) is an edible medicinal plant found mainly in Guangxi, China, and Mogroside V (MGV) is the main component of SG extract. Previous research has shown that SG and MGV exert anti-inflammatory, antioxidative and neuroprotective effects. However, it is not clear whether MGV has anti-depression-like effect. In this study, we evaluated the neuroprotective effects and anti-depression-like effect of MGV both in vitro and in vivo. By performing in vitro tests, we evaluated the protective effects of MGV on PC12 cells with corticosterone-induced injury. In vivo tests, we used the chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) depression model. Fluoxetine (10 mg/kg/day) and MGV (10 or 30 mg/kg/day) were administered by gavage for 21 days, and the open field test (OFT), novelty suppressed feeding test (NSFT), Tail suspension test (TST), and forced Swimming test (FST) were used to evaluate the depressive-like behaviors. In addition, we investigated the role of proinflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α) and anti-inflammatory cytokine (IL-4) in the hippocampal and cortex tissues. The levels of Superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX) in hippocampal and cortex tissues were also measured. Pathological changes in the hippocampal dentate gyrus and cortex regions were detected by immunofluorescence and Western blotting was used to measure the protein expression of BDNF, TrkB, TNF-α, and AKT. The results showed that MGV had a protective effect on PC12 cells with corticosterone-induced incurred injury. In addition, MGV treatment relieved the depressive symptoms and significantly reduced inflammatory levels (IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α). MGV also significantly reduced oxidative stress damage and reduced the levels of apoptosis in hippocampal nerve cells. These results suggested that the anti-depressive effect of MGV may occur through the inhibition of inflammatory and oxidative stress pathways and the BDNF/TrkB/AKT pathway. These findings provide a new concept for the identification of new anti-depressive strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cognitive impairment experienced by people with bipolar disorders (BD) or major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with impaired psychosocial function and poorer quality of life. Sleep disturbance is another core symptom of mood disorders which may be associated with, and perhaps worsen, cognitive impairments. The aim of this systematic review was to critically assess the relationship between sleep disturbance and cognitive impairment in mood disorders. METHODS In this systematic review, relevant studies were identified using electronic database searches of PsychINFO, MEDLINE, Embase and Web of Science. FINDINGS Fourteen studies were included; eight investigated people with BD, five investigated people with MDD, and one included both people with MDD and people with BD. One study was an intervention for sleep disturbance and the remaining thirteen studies used either a longitudinal or cross-sectional observational design. Ten studies reported a significant association between subjectively measured sleep disturbance and cognitive impairment in people with MDD or BD after adjusting for demographic and clinical covariates, whereas no such association was found in healthy participants. Two studies reported a significant association between objectively measured (actigraphy or polysomnography) sleep abnormalities and cognitive impairment in mood disorders. One study of cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia modified for BD (CBTI-BD) found an association between improvements in sleep and cognitive performance in BD. INTERPRETATION There is preliminary evidence to suggest a significant association between sleep disturbance and cognitive impairment in mood disorders. These findings highlight the need for further research of sleep disturbances and cognitive impairment in people with mood disorders.

Abstract
Aim: In patients followed up with sleep disorders and receiving antidepressant treatment, the choice of antidepressant should be appropriate to the characteristics of the patient and the drug. The aim of this study is to show the effects of antidepressant drug selection on polysomnography results.
Material and Method: This study was planned retrospectively and was conducted by scanning patient files. Between 01.06.2018 and 01.06.2022, the files of patients who underwent polysomnography in the sleep laboratory of our hospital and were using antidepressants were scanned. Differences between antidepressant groups and polysomnography results were analyzed with IBM SPSS v23.
Results: 103 patients (43 women/60 men) were included in the study. It was determined that 56 of these patients used selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and 47 of them used serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors. Yates correction was used in the comparison of gender according to the groups, and there was no statistically significant difference between the distributions of gender according to the groups (p=0.248). According to the drug groups, the results of the polysomnography examined in the study do not differ according to the groups.
Conclusion: It was shown that the antidepressant groups examined in the study did not differ in terms of affecting the results of polysomnography. Other clinical characteristics of the patient can be taken into account in the selection of antidepressants in these groups.

Abstract
Sleep is an essential physiological activity, accounting for about one-third of our lives, which significantly impacts our memory, mood, health, and children's growth. Especially after the COVID-19 epidemic, sleep health issues have attracted more attention. In recent years, with the development of wearable electronic devices, there have been more and more studies, products, or solutions related to sleep monitoring. Many mature technologies, such as polysomnography, have been applied to clinical practice. However, it is urgent to develop wearable or non-contacting electronic devices suitable for household continuous sleep monitoring. This paper first introduces the basic knowledge of sleep and the significance of sleep monitoring. Then, according to the types of physiological signals monitored, this paper describes the research progress of bioelectrical signals, biomechanical signals, and biochemical signals used for sleep monitoring. However, it is not ideal to monitor the sleep quality for the whole night based on only one signal. Therefore, this paper reviews the research on multi-signal monitoring and introduces systematic sleep monitoring schemes. Finally, a conclusion and discussion of sleep monitoring are presented to propose potential future directions and prospects for sleep monitoring.

Abstract
Background: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is the clinical manifestation of traumatic events and is associated with sleep disturbances. Sleep disturbances, if left untreated, may perpetuate or even worsen symptoms of PTSD. Previous studies of other PTSD populations show a higher incidence of sleep impairments and sleep disorders compared to healthy controls (HCs); however, this has never been investigated in trauma-affected refugees diagnosed with PTSD.Objectives: To examine subjective sleep quality, measure sleep architecture, and identify latent sleep disorders in refugees diagnosed with PTSD compared to HCs.Method: This comparative study included 20 trauma-affected refugees diagnosed with PTSD and 20 HC matched on age, sex, and body mass index. All participants completed self-report questionnaires assessing sleep quality, insomnia severity, and disturbing nocturnal behaviour, and all took part in a one-night polysomnography (PSG) assessment.Results: Patients reported significantly poorer subjective sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep duration, and sleep efficiency compared to HCs. Subjective reports on hours spent in bed were not significantly different between patients and HCs. Patients reported significantly higher nightmare frequency and severity compared to HCs. PSG measures showed that patients had significantly reduced sleep efficiency, more awakenings, and longer REM sleep latency, and spent more time awake, whereas there was no significant differences regarding total time in bed, total sleep time, or sleep latency. The prevalence of sleep disorders was equal between groups.Conclusions: The study identified significant impairments in several sleep domains, with a preponderance of disturbed regulation of sleep resulting in awakenings. These results indicate a need for more focus on hyperarousal and nightmares as key elements of disturbed sleep in PTSD. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the prevalence and patterns of multimorbidity in population with different genders and age ranges. DESIGN A cross-sectional study. SETTING National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys database. PARTICIPANTS 12 576 patients. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES The prevalence and patterns of multimorbidity. RESULTS High cholesterol had the highest prevalence in all population (33.4 (95% CI: 32.0 to 34.9)) and males. In females <65 years, the most prevalent disease was sleep disorder (32.1 (95% CI: 29.6 to 34.5)) while in females ≥65 years, hypertension was the most prevalent disease (63.9 (95% CI: 59.9 to 67.9)). Hypertension and high cholesterol were associated with the highest support (occur together most frequently) in all population regardless of genders. Hypertension displayed the highest betweenness centrality (mediating role in the network) followed by high cholesterol and arthritis in all population. For males aged <65 years, hypertension and high cholesterol presented the highest betweenness centrality. In males ≥65 years, hypertension, high cholesterol and arthritis were the top three diseases of degree centrality (direct association with other conditions). As for females ≥65 years, hypertension showed the highest betweenness centrality followed by high cholesterol and arthritis. The associations of hypertension, arthritis and one other item with high cholesterol presented the highest support in all population. In males, the associations of depression, hypertension with sleep disorders had the highest lift (the chance of co-occurrence of the conditions and significant association). Among females, the associations of depression, arthritis with sleep disorders had the highest lift. CONCLUSION Hypertension and high cholesterol were prevalent in all population, regardless of females and males. Hypertension and high cholesterol, arthritis and hypertension, and diabetes and hypertension were more likely to coexist. The findings of this study might help make plans for the management and primary care of people with one or more diseases.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Chronic Insomnia in Outpatients with Major Depression-A Randomised Controlled Trial. J Clin Med 2022; 11:jcm11195845. Abstract
The aim of this randomised controlled assessor-blinded trial was to examine the effect of cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia on sleep variables and depressive symptomatology in outpatients with comorbid insomnia and moderate to severe depression. Forty-seven participants were randomized to receive one weekly session in 6 weeks of cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia or treatment as usual. The intervention was a hybrid between individual and group treatment. Sleep scheduling could be especially challenging in a group format as patients with depression may need more support to adhere to the treatment recommendations. The primary outcome measure was the Insomnia Severity Index. Secondary measures were sleep diary data, the Dysfunctional Beliefs and Attitudes about Sleep Questionnaire, the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, and the World Health Organization Questionnaire for Quality of Life and polysomnography. Compared to treatment as usual, cognitive behavioural therapy significantly reduced the insomnia severity index (mean ISI 20.6 to 12.1, p = 0.001) and wake after sleep onset (mean 54.7 min to 19.0 min, p = 0.003) and increased sleep efficiency (mean SE 71.6 to 83.4, p = 0.006). Total sleep time and sleep onset latency were not significantly changed. The results were supported by analyses of the other rating scales and symptom dimensions. In conclusion, cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia as add-on to treatment as usual was effective for treating insomnia and depressive symptoms in a small sample of outpatients with insomnia and major depression. Abstract
Low vitamin D is linked to major depressive disorder (MDD) through affecting the brain. Gender difference is apparent in MDD and vitamin D level. We aimed to examine the association between gender, vitamin D, clinical presentations, and brain functional connectivity in a large cohort of MDD patients and comparison subjects. Resting-state functional MRI data from 122 patients and 119 controls were collected to perform a combined analysis of functional connectivity density (FCD) and seed-based functional connectivity (FC). Peripheral venous blood samples were obtained to measure serum concentration of vitamin D (SCVD). Clinical presentations (symptoms profiles and cognition) were also assessed. We found an interaction of group and gender on SCVD in which MDD patients demonstrated lower SCVD than controls in females rather than males. Concurrently, lower SCVD was associated with worse cognitive performance (prospective memory and sustained attention). Compared with controls, female MDD patients showed reduced FCD and FC of the left middle frontal gyrus, which were related to lower SCVD. Importantly, these FCD and FC changes mediated the relationship between lower SCVD and cognitive dysfunction. Our findings suggest that functional connectivity abnormalities may serve as neural substrates underlying the associations between low vitamin D and cognitive impairments in female MDD patients, providing unique insight into treatment and prevention of MDD and its related cognitive dysfunction from the perspective of regulating circulating vitamin D.

Abstract
Chronic distress-induced hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis deregulations have been associated with the development of neuropsychiatric disorders such as anxiety and depression. Currently available drugs treating such pathological conditions have limited efficacy and diverse side effects, revealing the need of new safer strategies. Aromatic plant-based compounds are largely used in herbal medicine due to their therapeutic properties on mood, physiology, and general well-being. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of 2-phenylethyl alcohol (PEA), one of the pharmacologically active constituents of rose essential oil, on chronic corticosterone (CORT)-induced behavioral and neurobiological changes in female mice. Animals followed a prolonged PEA inhalation exposure (30 min per day) for 15 consecutive days prior to behavioral evaluation with open-field, forced swim and novelty-suppressed feeding tests. CORT treatment induced an anxio-depressive-like phenotype, evidenced by a reduced locomotor activity in the open-field, and an increased latency to feed in the novelty-suppressed feeding paradigms. To elucidate the neural correlates of our behavioral results, immunohistochemistry was further performed to provide a global map of neural activity based on cerebral cFos expression. The altered feeding behavior was accompanied by a significant decrease in the number of cFos-positive cells in the olfactory bulb, and altered functional brain connectivity as shown by cross-correlation-based network analysis. CORT-induced behavioral and neurobiological alterations were reversed by prolonged PEA inhalation, suggesting a therapeutic action that allows regulating the activity of neural circuits involved in sensory, emotional and feeding behaviors. These findings might contribute to better understand the therapeutic potential of PEA on anxio-depressive symptoms.

Abstract
The sleep-wake cycle is the result of the activity of a multiple neurobiological network interaction. Dreaming feature is one interesting sleep phenomena that represents sensorial components, mostly visual perceptions, accompanied with intense emotions. Further complexity has been added to the topic of the neurobiological mechanism of dreams generation by the current data that suggests the influence of drugs on dream generation. Here, we discuss the review on some of the neurobiological mechanism of the regulation of dream activity, with special emphasis on the effects of stimulants on dreaming.

Abstract
Sleep disturbances and changes of activity patterns are not uncommon in anxiety disorders, but they are rarely the object of attention. Actigraphic monitoring of day and night activity patterns could provide useful data to detect symptom worsening, prevent risk periods, and evaluate treatment efficacy in those disorders. Thus, we have conducted a systematic search of the scientific literature to find any original study using actigraphic monitoring to investigate activity and sleep patterns in patients affected by any type of anxiety disorder according to the definition of the DSM-5. We found only six studies fulfilling these criteria. Three studies report significant findings in patients suffering from anxiety disorders. Overall, the samples and methods are heterogeneous. Although the authors support the interest of actigraphic monitoring in anxiety disorders, the evidence to date is very limited.

Abstract
PURPOSE Nightmare is common and is also independently implicated in suicide risk among the adolescent population. Adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD) are at an increased risk of suicide. Therefore, comorbid nightmares may amplify suicide risk among this clinical population. This study aimed to explore the effects of nightmares on suicide risk among adolescents with MDD. PATIENTS AND METHODS Subjects were 499 outpatients aged 12-18 in four large psychiatric hospitals clinic of China, from January 1 to October 31, 2021. Simultaneously, we matched 499 healthy controls according to gender and age. All participants underwent affective state (depressive and anxiety symptoms) and sleep variable (nightmare frequency/distress, insomnia symptoms, and daytime sleepiness) evaluation as well as MDD diagnoses and determination of suicide risk by a fully structured diagnostic clinical interview. RESULTS Adolescents with MDD reported a higher incidence of frequent nightmares (at least one night per week) and level of nightmare distress than healthy controls (22.0% vs 6.1%; 28.85 ± 11.92 vs 17.30 ± 5.61). Over half of the patients with suicide risk (51.6%) experienced frequent nightmares compared with approximately one-third of those at a risk for suicide (30.7%). Patients with suicide risk scored scientifically higher on sleep variables, depressive and anxiety symptoms than those without the risk. Further logistic regression analysis indicated that female gender, junior grade, recurrent depressive episode, severe nightmare distress and severe depressive symptoms were independently and significantly associated with suicide risk. CONCLUSION Our study provided evidence that adolescents with MDD experienced a higher prevalence of frequent nightmares and suffered more nightmare distress. Nightmare distress is an independent risk factor for suicide risk.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Recent studies have shown that sleep problems occur in migraineurs and poor sleep causes chronification, but the mechanisms by which chronic migraine affects sleep quality are still unknown. This review aims to analyze commonly reported sleep disturbances in chronic migraine (CM) and determine the effect of CM on sleep quality. MATERIALS AND METHODS We conducted a comprehensive review of all published articles on CM and sleep quality from inception to March 2022 in the literature. Clinical trials, observational studies, and case series (≥20 cases) were included. Two reviewers and a supervisor reviewed the titles and abstracts of all search results with predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. PubMed search for randomized controlled trials and open studies on CM and sleep quality reported in English between 1983 and 2022 was conducted using the keywords including chronic migraine, sleep, insomnia, sleep quality, polysomnography, and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. RESULTS A total of 535 potentially relevant articles were found. A total of 455 articles and reviews, meta-analyses published in any language other than English, with other exclusion criteria, were excluded from the review. In the remaining articles, 36 clinical studies, reviewing sleep quality and its association with migraine, were identified and reviewed. Evidence from this review shows that poor sleep and migraine chronicity are intertwined with other accompanying comorbidities and dysregulation of circadian rhythm that innovative treatments promise to bring relief to both poor sleep as well as migraine. CONCLUSION Sleep disorders are common in CM and the association between migraine chronification and sleep quality is bidirectional. Comorbid conditions with accompanying frequent attacks in migraine may impair sleep quality. While the maladaptive pain process worsens sleep, poor sleep quality also negatively affects migraine pain. Sleep disturbance, which is affected by worsening migraine attacks, causes deterioration in the quality of life, loss of workforce, and economic burden.

Abstract
Only survey studies have linked specific individual psychiatric disorders such as anxiety, depression and schizophrenia to Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS), Periodic Limb Movements in Sleep (PLMS) or both. We therefore aim to polysomnographically characterize sleep in a sample of physician-based, newly diagnosed cases of RLS with various ICD-10 psychiatric diagnoses. Retrospective analysis of data from a convenience sample of psychiatric patients (n = 43) per standard clinical sleep disorder cut-offs was conducted. Next, a cluster analysis was performed on the sleep data, taking into account the psychiatric diagnosis, comorbid non-psychiatric somatic problems and medication. We found that 37.2% of our sample showed clinically significant PLMS ≥ 15 and 76.5% exhibited an apnea hypopnea index (AHI) ≥ 5. Sleep structure was unaltered apart from the PLMS-related parameters. Two clusters were statistically identified: Cluster 1 primarily representing recurrent major depressive issues and Cluster 2 representing present but not predominant mood symptomatology as well as mixed disorders with personality problems. The known confounders were controlled. A PLMS index ≥ 15 was differentially distributed among the two clusters with Cluster 1: 10 out of 17 with PLMS index ≥ 15; Cluster 2: 1 out of 16 with PLMS index ≥15; whilst AHI was not different. Patients in Cluster 1 have a higher rate of periodic leg movements than patients in Cluster 2. This suggests that the high association with PLMS is primarily driven by affective disorders. Our findings warrant questioning of RLS symptomatology in patients with psychiatric conditions.

Abstract
Migraine and sleep disorders are common chronic diseases in the general population, with significant negative social and economic impacts. The association between both of these phenomena has been observed by clinicians for years and is confirmed by many epidemiological studies. Despite this, the nature of this relationship is still not fully understood. In recent years, there has been rapid progress in understanding the common anatomical structures of and pathogenetic mechanism between sleep and migraine. Based on a literature review, the authors present the current view on this topic as well as ongoing research in this field, with reference to the key points of the biochemical and neurophysiological processes responsible for both these disorders. In the future, a better understanding of these mechanisms will significantly expand the range of treatment options.
