Chitosan Nanocomposite Coatings Containing Chemically Resistant ZnO-SnOx Core-shell Nanoparticles for Photocatalytic Antifouling

Antifouling activity of PEGylated chitosan coatings: Impacts of the side chain length and encapsulated ZnO/Ag nanoparticles

PEGylation is regarded as a common antifouling strategy and the effect is normally linked with surface hydrophilicity of the coatings. Herein, the biopolymer chitosan (CS) was grafted by polyethylene glycol (PEG) of different chain lengths (molecular weight 200, 4 k and 100 k Da) to verify if the hydrophilicity of CS-PEG coatings is crucial in determining antifouling activities and if PEG chain length influences biofouling in marine environment. Properties of copolymers such as melting points and crystallinity are affected by grafting PEG. The water contact angle (WCA) of CS-PEG coatings increases with the chain length of grafted PEG, from 27° to 58°. Photocatalyst of zinc oxide-silver (ZnO/Ag) was also studied and its embedment (2 % to CS-PEG) renders the surface of CS-PEG coatings more hydrophobic with WCA increased from 52° to 86°. Antibacterial, anti-diatom, and anti-biofilm activities of the coatings were evaluated in natural sea water. The bacterial density on CS-PEG coatings was dramatically reduced to 4 × 104 compared to the control of 7 × 104 ind/mm2, and further to 2 × 104 for CS-PEG-ZnO/Ag coatings. CS-PEG coatings also strongly inhibit diatoms (120-200 ind/mm2), but the inclusion of ZnO/Ag did not obviously enhance such effect (50-150 ind/mm2). The findings provide useful insights for designing polymer-based antifouling coatings.

Techniques, applications and prospects of polysaccharide and protein based biopolymer coatings: A review

The growing relevance of sustainable materials has recently led to the exploration of naturally derived biopolymeric hydrogels as coating materials due to their biodegradability, biocompatibility, ease of fabrication and modification. Although many review articles exist on biopolymeric coatings, they mainly focus on a specific polysaccharide, protein biopolymer, or a particular application- biomedical engineering or food preservation. The current review first summarizes the commonly used polysaccharide and protein-based biopolymers like chitosan, alginate, carrageenan, pectin, cellulose, starch, pullulan, agarose and silk fibroin, gelatin, respectively, with a systematic description of the techniques widely used for physical coating on substrates. Then, broad applications of these biopolymeric coatings on various substrates in biomedical engineering- 3D scaffolds, biomedical implants, and nanoparticles are described in detail. It also entails the application of biopolymeric coatings for food preservation in the form of food packaging and edible coatings. A brief discussion on the newly discovered interest in exploring biopolymers for anticorrosive coating applications is also included. Finally, concluding remarks on the role of biopolymer microstructures in forming homogeneous coatings, prospective alternatives to the currently used biopolymers as coating material and the advent of computer-aided technologies to expedite experimental findings are presented.

A review of experimental Assessment Processes of material resistance to marine and freshwater biofouling

Biofouling presents hazards to a variety of freshwater and marine underwater infrastructures and is one of the direct causes of species invasion. These negative impacts provide a unified goal for both industry practitioners and researchers: the development of novel antifouling materials to prevent the adhesion of biofouling. The prohibition of tributyltin (TBT) by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 2001 propelled the research and development of new antifouling materials. However, the evaluation process and framework for these materials remain incomplete and unsystematic. This mini-review starts with the classification and principles of new antifouling materials, discussing and summarizing the methods for assessing their biofouling resistance. The paper also compiles the relevant regulations and environmental requirements from different countries necessary for developing new antifouling materials with commercial potential. It concludes by highlighting the current challenges in antifouling material development and future outlooks. Systematic evaluation of newly developed antifouling materials can lead to the emergence of more genuinely applicable solutions, transitioning from merely laboratory products to materials that can be effectively used in real-world applications.

Preparation of novel clay/chitosan/ZnO bio-composite as an efficient adsorbent for tannery wastewater treatment

This study focuses on the preparation of an activated clay/chitosan/ZnO bio-composite using solvent casting method. Clay was activated through microwave radiation using 1 M H2SO4 at a minimum liquid to solid ratio (L/S). Chitosan was extracted from waste prawn shell and ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) were synthesized from zinc acetate di-hydrate (Zn (CH3CO2)2·2H2O) using the sol-gel method. The produced bio-composite were characterized using FT-IR, TGA, XRD and SEM. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used for experimental design to find out the optimum conditions, e.g., pH of the solution, dosage of adsorbent and contact time for the removal of methylene blue (MB) and Cr (VI) using MINITAB 18.1 software. The optimum conditions obtained for the highest removal of MB were pH 9.57, dosage 55.44 mg and contact time 114.09 min. Similarly, for the highest removal of Cr (VI) the optimum conditions were pH 3.75, dosage 67.42 mg and contact time 111.27 min. Applying these optimum conditions, the highest removal efficiency for MB and Cr (VI) was obtained at 84.21 % and 82.67 % with 9.57 mg g-1 and 10.45 mg g-1 of adsorption capacity respectively. The adsorption data were studied for both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm. The value of maximum Langmuir sorption was (qm) 17.346 mg g-1 and 17.621 mg g-1 for MB and Cr (VI) respectively.

Chitosan-based composite films containing eugenol nanoemulsion, ZnO nanoparticles and Aloe vera gel for active food packaging

Biopolymer-based food packaging films are gaining increasing popularity, as consumers' demands for sustainable alternatives and environmental concerns associated with synthetic plastic packaging grow. In this research work, chitosan-based active antimicrobial films reinforced with eugenol nanoemulsion (EuNE), Aloe vera gel, and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) were fabricated and characterized for their solubility, microstructure, optical properties, antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. The rate of release of EuNE from the fabricated films was also evaluated to determine active nature of the films. The EuNE droplet size was about 200 nm, and they were uniformly distributed throughout the film matrices. Incorporation of EuNE in chitosan drastically improved UV-light barrier property of the fabricated composite film by 3 to 6 folds, while maintaining their transparency. The XRD spectra of the fabricated films showed good compatibility between the chitosan and the incorporated active agents. The incorporation of ZnONPs significantly improved their antibacterial properties against foodborne bacteria and tensile strength about 2-folds, whereas incorporation of EuNE and AVG improved DPPH scavenging activities of the chitosan film up to 95 %, respectively.

Composite beads from chitosan and zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 for the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of reactive red 141

This study describes the fabrication of composite beads comprising chitosan and zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) as a natural biodegradable dye adsorbent and support for ZnO photocatalyst. Chitosan beads were cross-linked with trisodium citrate dihydrate to enhance the adsorption capacity for the reactive red 141 dye (RR141). The ability was further improved by adding ZIF-8. The optimum loading was 2.5%, and the adsorption equilibrium was reached within 2 h. The maximum adsorption capacity of the composite beads was 6.51 mg g-1 at pH 4 when an initial concentration of 1000 mg L-1 was used. The pseudo-second-order kinetics model and the Langmuir isotherm model best described the adsorption process. The composite beads could also adsorb dyes like reactive black, Congo red, direct yellow, reactive orange, rhodamine B, crystal violet, and methylene blue (MB). Thermal stability was significantly improved after coating the surface of the 2.5% ZIF beads with a ZnO photocatalyst. After UV irradiation for 5 h, the photocatalytic beads containing 2.59 weight percent of ZnO could decolorize 99% of MB and 90% of RR141 dyes with a degradation rate of 0.6032 h-1 and 0.3198 h-1, respectively. Furthermore, the photocatalytic beads remained effective for at least ten consecutive cycles.

Chitosan modified with bio-extract as an antibacterial coating with UV filtering feature

Benzophenone-3 grafted chitosan (CS-BP-3) was successfully synthesized and applied as an antibacterial coating for the first time. The grafting mechanism is based on the reaction between ketone and primary amine to form imine derivatives and the chemical structure of grafted chitosan was studied by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Water solubility of BP-3 is enhanced after covalently grafted on chitosan and consequently renders the chitosan coating with UV blocking property. Results of thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) further confirmed the thermal stability of BP-3 modified chitosan is enhanced. The CS-BP-3 coating was applied on a variety of substrates of glass, plastics, wood, and metal. The surface features of the coatings such as morphology, water contact angle (WCA), and surface roughness were investigated. The optical and thermal stabilities of the coatings under UV irradiation were studied for 16 h. Antibacterial activity of CS-BP-3 was evaluated against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. And the results of bacterial inhibition by CS-BP-3 coating indicate its potential for future application in food packaging.

Nanotechnology: the Alternative and Efficient Solution to Biofouling in the Aquaculture Industry

Biofouling is a global issue in aquaculture industries. It adversely affects marine infrastructure (ship's hulls, mariculture cages and nets, underwater pipes and filters, building materials, probes, and sensor devices). The estimated cost of managing marine biofouling accounts for 5-10% of production cost. Non-toxic foul-release coating and biocide-based coating are the two current approaches. Recent innovation and development of a surface coating with nanoparticles such as photocatalytic zinc oxide nanocoating on fishing nets, copper oxide nanocoating on the water-cooling system, and silver nanoparticle coating to inhibit microalgal adhesion on submerged surfaces under natural light (photoperiod) could present meaningful anti-biofouling application. Nanocoating of zinc, copper, and silver oxide is an environmentally friendly surface coating strategy that avoid surface adhesion of bacteria, diatoms, algal, protozoans, and fungal species. Such nanocoating could also provide a solution to strains tolerant to Cu, Zn, and Ag. This draft of the special issue demonstrates the anti-biofouling potential of various metal and metal oxide nanoparticle coating to combat aquaculture industry biofouling problems.

Synthesis of Bimetallic BiPO4/ZnO Nanocomposite: Enhanced Photocatalytic Dye Degradation and Antibacterial Applications

Multidrug-resistant strains (MDRs) are becoming a major concern in a variety of settings, including water treatment and the medical industry. Well-dispersed catalysts such as BiPO₄, ZnO nanoparticles (NPs), and different ratios of BiPO₄/ZnO nanocomposites (NCs) were synthesized through hydrothermal treatments. The morphological behavior of the prepared catalysts was characterized using XRD, Raman spectra, PL, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-DRS), SEM, EDX, and Fe-SEM. MDRs were isolated and identified by the 16s rDNA technique as belonging to B. flexus, B. filamentosus, P. stutzeri, and A. baumannii. The antibacterial activity against MDRs and the photocatalytic methylene blue (MB) dye degradation activity of the synthesized NPs and NCs were studied. The results demonstrate that the prepared BiPO₄/ZnO-NCs (B1Z4-75:300; NCs-4) caused a maximum growth inhibition of 20 mm against A. baumannii and a minimum growth inhibition of 12 mm against B. filamentosus at 80 μg mL^-1 concentrations of the NPs and NCs. Thus, NCs-4 might be a suitable alternative to further explore and develop as an antibacterial agent. The obtained results statistically justified the data (p ≤ 0.05) via one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). According to the results of the antibacterial and photocatalytic study, we selected the best bimetallic NCs-4 for the photoexcited antibacterial effect of MDRs, including Gram ve⁺ and Gram ve^- strains, via UV light irradiation. The flower-like NCs-4 composites showed more effectiveness than those of BiPO₄, ZnO, and other ratios of NCs. The results encourage the development of flower-like NCs-4 to enhance the photocatalytic antibacterial technique for water purification.

Green synthesis of bioinspired chitosan-ZnO-based polysaccharide gums hydrogels with propolis extract as novel functional natural biomaterials

A facile, green synthesis methodology to obtain zinc oxide nanoparticles using three polysaccharide gums (Acacia gum, Guar gum and Xanthan gum) of biological origin was developed. Subsequently, biosynthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles were incorporated into a sustainable chitosan hydrogel matrix functionalized with propolis extract. This study has revealed that the selected polysaccharides as chelates represents a suitable approach to synthesize ZnO nanoparticles of particular interest with controlled morphology. The formation of ZnO nanoparticles using polysaccharide gums was confirmed by FTIR, XRD, UV-Vis spectroscopy, thermal analysis, SEM, Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopies. The rheological behaviour of obtained hydrogels was evaluated. The AFM studies demonstrate that all synthesized chitosan incorporated ZnO composites hydrogels functionalized with propolis extract exhibit corrugated topographies. The present study highlights the possible incorporation of various guest molecules into hydrogel matrix due to its tuneable morphologies. The obtained hydrogel composites were cytocompatible in L929 fibroblast cell culture, in a range of concentrations between 50 and 1000 μg/mL, as assessed by MTT, LDH and Live/Dead double staining assays. By enhancing the biological properties, these novel green hydrogels show attractive superior performance in a wide concentration range to develop future in vivo suitable natural platforms as effective delivery systems of pharmacologic agents for biomedical applications.

Nanocoating Is a New Way for Biofouling Prevention

Biofouling is a major concern to the maritime industry. Biofouling increases fuel consumption, accelerates corrosion, clogs membranes and pipes, and reduces the buoyancy of marine installations, such as ships, platforms, and nets. While traditionally marine installations are protected by toxic biocidal coatings, due to recent environmental concerns and legislation, novel nanomaterial-based anti-fouling coatings are being developed. Hybrid nanocomposites of organic-inorganic materials give a possibility to combine the characteristics of both groups of material generating opportunities to prevent biofouling. The development of bio-inspired surface designs, progress in polymer science and advances in nanotechnology is significantly contributing to the development of eco-friendly marine coatings containing photocatalytic nanomaterials. The review mainly discusses photocatalysis, antifouling activity, and formulation of coatings using metal and metal oxide nanomaterials (nanoparticles, nanowires, nanorods). Additionally, applications of nanocomposite coatings for inhibition of micro- and macro-fouling in marine environments are reviewed.

Chitosan-Based Antimicrobial Coating for Improving Postharvest Shelf Life of Pineapple

Rapid postharvest losses and quality deteriorations in pineapple are major challenges to growers and handlers. Chitosan-based coatings on fruit surfaces have gained importance in recent years to enhance postharvest shelf life of the fruits. In this study, aloe vera gel was added as a natural antioxidant in chitosan-based composite coating containing ZnO nanoparticles. The developed formulation was applied on the surface of freshly harvested pineapple fruits. ZnO nanoparticles were used as an antimicrobial agent. Coated pineapple fruits were evaluated for weight loss, total soluble solids, titratable acidity, decay index, maturity index, and sensory attributes, including visual appearance, periodically at 5 day interval during storage. The results showed that the coating of the fruit reduced weight loss by about 5%, and also delayed ripening and oxidative decay compared to the uncoated fruit. Thus, the developed coating formulation is a promising sustainable solution to reduce postharvest losses and to extend shelf life of pineapples.

Fabrication of Paper Sheets Coatings Based on Chitosan/Bacterial Nanocellulose/ZnO with Enhanced Antibacterial and Mechanical Properties

Here, we designed paper sheets coated with chitosan, bacterial cellulose (nanofibers), and ZnO with boosted antibacterial and mechanical activity. We investigated the compositions, with ZnO exhibiting two different sizes/shapes: (1) rods and (2) irregular sphere-like particles. The proposed processing of bacterial cellulose resulted in the formation of nanofibers. Antimicrobial behavior was tested using E. coli ATCC® 25922™ following the ASTM E2149-13a standard. The mechanical properties of the paper sheets were measured by comparing tearing resistance, tensile strength, and bursting strength according to the ISO 5270 standard. The results showed an increased antibacterial response (assigned to the combination of chitosan and ZnO, independent of its shape and size) and boosted mechanical properties. Therefore, the proposed composition is an interesting multifunctional mixture for coatings in food packaging applications.
