Facile Synthesis and Characterization of Palm CNF-ZnO Nanocomposites with Antibacterial and Reinforcing Properties

Cellulosic Textiles-An Appealing Trend for Different Pharmaceutical Applications

Cellulose, the most abundant biopolymer in nature, is derived from various sources. The production of pharmaceutical textiles based on cellulose represents a growing sector. In medicated textiles, textile and pharmaceutical sciences are integrated to develop new healthcare approaches aiming to improve patient compliance. Through the possibility of cellulose functionalization, pharmaceutical textiles can broaden the applications of cellulose in the biomedical field. This narrative review aims to illustrate both the methods of extraction and preparation of cellulose fibers, with a particular focus on nanocellulose, and diverse pharmaceutical applications like tissue restoration and antimicrobial, antiviral, and wound healing applications. Additionally, the merging between fabricated cellulosic textiles with drugs, metal nanoparticles, and plant-derived and synthetic materials are also illustrated. Moreover, new emerging technologies and the use of smart medicated textiles (3D and 4D cellulosic textiles) are not far from those within the review scope. In each section, the review outlines some of the limitations in the use of cellulose textiles, indicating scientific research that provides significant contributions to overcome them. This review also points out the faced challenges and possible solutions in a trial to present an overview on all issues related to the use of cellulose for the production of pharmaceutical textiles.

Property enhancement of epoxidized natural rubber nanocomposites with water hyacinth-extracted cellulose nanofibers

Cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) have been widely used as reinforcement in various polymer matrices; however, limited studies of the use of CNFs in epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) have been reported. Here, we successfully prepared CNF-reinforced ENR nanocomposites with superior mechanical performance. CNFs were disintegrated from water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) using high-pressure homogenization, and ENR nanocomposites with CNFs were fabricated by initial mixing and hot pressing. The crosslink densities of the nanocomposites with CNFs were higher than that of the neat ENR. Due to stronger interfacial interactions between the hydroxyl groups of the CNFs and the functional groups of the ENR, stress could be efficiently transferred from the ENR matrix to the stiff CNFs, resulting in a significant increase in the mechanical properties. Compared with those of the neat ENR, the tensile strength and Young's modulus of the ENR nanocomposites were improved by 80 and 39 %, respectively, with the incorporation of 2 parts per hundred rubber (phr) CNFs, whereas no loss in elongation at break was observed. The introduction of CNFs also improved the oil resistance of the nanocomposites. Therefore, CNFs could be the potential reinforcing agent in the ENR nanocomposites used in the various engineering applications of the rubber material.

Facile preparation of cellulose nanocrystals/ZnO hybrids using acidified ZnCl2 as cellulose hydrolytic media and ZnO precursor

Hybridization of nanocellulose with zinc oxide nanoparticles can improve the dispersibility of the zinc oxide and bring new functions to the bio-based products. In this study, cellulose nanocrystal/zinc oxide (CNC/ZnO) nanohybrids with reinforcing and antibacterial properties were prepared via a facile one-pot route. Microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) was first treated with acidified zinc chloride and hydrolyzed into CNCs, which then served as a stabilizing and supporting agent for the in-situ growth of ZnO nanoparticles during subsequent chemical precipitation. The acidified ZnCl₂ solution played a dual role, acting both as cellulose hydrolytic media and as ZnO precursor. By adjusting the pH of the zinc precursor solution (pH = 9-12), well-dispersed rod-like (length: 137.0-468.0 nm, width: 54.1-154.1 nm) and flower-like (average diameter: 179.6 nm) ZnO nanoparticles with hexagonal wurtzite structure were obtained. CNC/ZnO nanohybrids were incorporated into waterborne polyurethane (WPU) films. The Young's modulus and tensile strength of the nanocomposite films increased gradually from 154.8 to 509.0 MPa and from 16.5 to 29.9 MPa, respectively, with increasing CNC/ZnO nanofiller content up to 10 wt%. The 10 % CNC/ZnO composites showed inhibition rates to both E. coli and S. aureus above 88.8 %.

An Active Bio-Based Food Packaging Material of ZnO@Plant Polyphenols/Cellulose/Polyvinyl Alcohol: DESIGN, Characterization and Application

Active packaging materials protect food from deterioration and extend its shelf life. In the quest to design intriguing packaging materials, biocomposite ZnO/plant polyphenols/cellulose/polyvinyl alcohol (ZnPCP) was prepared via simple hydrothermal and casting methods. The structure and morphology of the composite were fully analyzed using XRD, FTIR, SEM and XPS. The ZnO particles, plant polyphenols (PPL) and cellulose were found to be dispersed in PVA. All of these components share their unique functions with the composite's properties. This study shows that PPL in the composite not only improves the ZnO dispersivity in PVA as a crosslinker, but also enhances the water barrier of PVA. The ZnO, PPL and cellulose work together, enabling the biocomposite to perform as a good food packaging material with only a 1% dosage of the three components in PVA. The light shielding investigation showed that ZnPCP-10 can block almost 100% of both UV and visible light. The antibacterial activities were evaluated by Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Gram-positive staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), with 4.4 and 6.3 mm inhibition zones, respectively, being achieved by ZnPCP-10. The enhanced performance and easy degradation enables the biocomposite ZnPCP to be a prospect material in the packaging industry.

Green nanocomposite: fabrication, characterization, and photocatalytic application of vitamin C adduct-conjugated ZnO nanoparticles†

Recently, the conjugation of metal oxide nanoparticles with organic moieties has attracted the attention of many researchers for various applications. In this research, the green and biodegradable vitamin C was employed in a facile and inexpensive procedure to synthesize the vitamin C adduct (3), which was then blended with green ZnONPs to fabricate a new composite category (ZnONPs@vitamin C adduct). The morphology and structural composition of the prepared ZnONPs and their composites were confirmed by several techniques: Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), UV-vis differential reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, elemental mapping, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, and zeta potential measurements. The structural composition and conjugation strategies between the ZnONPs and vitamin C adduct were revealed by FT-IR spectroscopy. The experimental results for the ZnONPs showed that they possessed a nanocrystalline wurtzite structure with quasi-spherical particles with a polydisperse size ranging from 23 to 50 nm, while the particle size appeared greater in the FE-SEM images (band gap energy of 3.22 eV); after loading with the l-ascorbic acid adduct (3), the band gap energy dropped to 3.06 eV. Later, under solar light irradiation, the photocatalytic activities of both the synthesized ZnONPs@vitamin C adduct (4) and ZnONPs, including the stability, regeneration and reusability, catalyst amount, initial dye concentration, pH effect, and light source studies, were investigated in detail in the degradation of Congo red dye (CR). Furthermore, an extensive comparison between the fabricated ZnONPs, composite (4), and ZnONPs from previous studies was performed to gain insights to commercialize the catalyst (4). Under optimum conditions, the photodegradation of CR after 180 min was 54% for ZnONPs and 95% for the ZnONPs@l-ascorbic acid adduct. Moreover, the PL study confirmed the photocatalytic enhancement of the ZnONPs. The photocatalytic degradation fate was determined by LC-MS spectrometry.

The photocatalytic efficiency of ZnO NPs is dramatically improved through the conjugation with benign l-ascorbic acid adduct.

Fabrication of ZnO@Plant Polyphenols/Cellulose as Active Food Packaging and Its Enhanced Antibacterial Activity

To investigate the efficient use of bioresources and bioproducts, plant polyphenol (PPL) was extracted from larch bark and further applied to prepare ZnO@PPL/Cel with cellulose to examine its potential as an active package material. The structure and morphology were fully characterized by XRD, SEM, FTIR, XPS and Raman spectra. It was found that PPL is able to cover ZnO and form a coating layer. In addition, PPL cross-links with cellulose and makes ZnO distribute evenly on the cellulose fibers. Coating with PPL creates a pinecone-like morphology in ZnO, which is constructed by subunits of 50 nm ZnO slices. The interactions among ZnO, PPL and cellulose have been attributed to hydrogen bonding, which plays an important role in guiding the formation of composites. The antibacterial properties against Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) were tested by the inhibition zone method. Our composite ZnO@PPL/Cel has superior antibacterial activity compared to ZnO/Cel. The antibacterial mechanism has also been elaborated on. The low cost, simple preparation method and good performance of ZnO@PPL/Cel suggest the potential for it to be applied as active food packaging.

Assessing the suitability of self-healing rubber glove for safe handling of pesticides

Rubber gloves used for protection against chemicals or hazards are generally prone to tearing or leaking after repeated use, exposing the worker to potentially hazardous agents. Self-healing technology promises increased product durability and shelf life appears to be a feasible solution to address these issues. Herein, we aimed to fabricate a novel epoxidized natural rubber-based self-healable glove (SH glove) and investigate its suitability for handling pesticides safely. In this study, breakthrough time analysis and surface morphological observation were performed to determine the SH glove's ability to withstand dangerous chemicals. The chemical resistance performance of the fabricated SH glove was compared against four different types of commercial gloves at different temperatures. Using malathion as a model pesticide, the results showed that the SH glove presented chemical resistance ability comparable to those gloves made with nitrile and NR latex at room temperature and 37 °C. The self-healing test revealed that the SH glove could be self-healed and retained its chemical resistance ability close to its pre-cut value. Our findings suggested that the developed SH glove with proven chemical resistance capability could be a new suitable safety glove for effectively handling pesticides and reducing glove waste generation.

Streptomyces sp.-A Treasure Trove of Weapons to Combat Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Biofilm Associated with Biomedical Devices

Biofilms formed by methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) are among the most frequent causes of biomedical device-related infection, which are difficult to treat and are often persistent and recurrent. Thus, new and effective antibiofilm agents are urgently needed. In this article, we review the most relevant literature of the recent years reporting on promising anti-MRSA biofilm agents derived from the genus Streptomyces bacteria, and discuss the potential contribution of these newly reported antibiofilm compounds to the current strategies in preventing biofilm formation and eradicating pre-existing biofilms of the clinically important pathogen MRSA. Many efforts are evidenced to address biofilm-related infections, and some novel strategies have been developed and demonstrated encouraging results in preclinical studies. Nevertheless, more in vivo studies with appropriate biofilm models and well-designed multicenter clinical trials are needed to assess the prospects of these strategies.
