Hybrid Nanoparticles at Fluid-Fluid Interfaces: Insight from Theory and Simulation

Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Different Nanoparticles at Substrates

We report the results of large-scale molecular dynamics simulations of adsorption nanoparticles on solid surfaces. The particles were modeled as stiff aggregates of spherical segments. Three types of particles were studied: rods, rectangles, and triangles built of the same number of segments. We show how the particle shape affects the adsorption, the structure of the surface layer, and the degree of the removal of particles from the solvent. The systems with different segment-segment and segment-surface interactions and different concentrations of particles were investigated. The ordered structures formed in adsorption monolayers were also analyzed. The results are consistent with experimental observations.

Tunable Approach to Induce the Formation of Flexible Nanofilms from Small (3 nm) Gold Nanoparticles at Oil-Water Interfaces

The self-assembly of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) into thin films at the liquid-liquid interface has promising applications in industries such as catalysis, optics, and sensors. However, precise control over their formation is complex, influenced by several factors which scale differently with core size. Due to their small free energy of adsorption, there are few examples of AuNPs with core diameters <10 nm. The present research evaluates the adsorption of ∼3 nm AuNPs from either side of the oil-aqueous interface with variations in ligand shell composition, the oil phase composition, and the structure of alcohol additives to best drive thin-film formation. Film formation and quality are evaluated, and a recent thermodynamic model is used to gain insight into the primary forces promoting this adsorption. Results demonstrate that longer-chain alcohol additives (namely, n-butanol and n-hexanol) induced adsorption more efficiently than shorter-chain alcohols (ethanol). The volume of alcohol additive needed to induce adsorption was dependent upon the ligand composition, suggesting that the mechanism for induced interfacial adsorption is via interaction with the AuNP ligand shell. Comparison with the thermodynamic model indicates that the driving force for this induced adsorption is the alteration of the three-phase contact angle. Additionally, the use of various oils demonstrates that as oil-water interfacial tension increases, more AuNPs adsorb to the interface. This relationship is also supported by the model. Insight gained for favorable conditions of adsorption for AuNPs < 10 nm as well as the underlying thermodynamic mechanism is important in working toward the ability to fine-tune such films for industrial applications.

Challenges, limitations, and applications of nanofluids in solar thermal collectors-a comprehensive review

The daily increase in the demand for energy consumption is partly caused by the global population explosion and advancements in technology. Humanity relies on energy to fulfil its daily routines, such as electricity for lighting, heating, cooling, and running electronic devices. There are continuous attempts by researchers and industry experts to optimize and enhance the efficiency of various sustainable energy generation devices. Solar collectors play a critical role in the renewable energy sector, which is vital in helping the world achieve a clean, green, and sustainable environment. Over the last two decades, researchers have made significant efforts to explore various techniques for enhancing the effectiveness of solar thermal collectors. Their effort has been centered around improving the fluid thermal properties, which act as the heat transfer medium in solar collectors. The discovery of nanofluids will help resolve some of the challenges associated with conventional fluid used in solar collectors. Enhancement through nanofluids is influenced by several factors, which include nanoparticle types, nanoparticle concentration, base fluid, and the purpose of its application. This review provides a technical summary of the application of nanofluids in the two main types of collectors: non-concentrating and concentrated thermal collectors. Findings from this study showed that TiO2 + Cu hybrid nanofluids with a mass fraction of 0.03 augment heat transfer coefficient by 21% in parabolic trough collectors. The merits of employing nanofluids as heat transfer fluids in solar collectors are examined, while also outlining the obstacles and areas where further research is needed.

Janus Ligand-Tethered Nanoparticles at Liquid-Liquid Interfaces

We investigate the structural properties of Janus ligand-tethered nanoparticles at liquid-liquid interfaces using coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. The effect of interactions between different chains and liquids is discussed. We consider the Janus particles with symmetrical interactions with the liquids which correspond to supplementary wettability and particles with uncorrelated interactions. Simulation results indicate that the Janus hairy particles trapped in the interface region have different configurations characterized by the vertical displacement distance, the orientation of the Janus line relative to the interface, and the particle shape. The Janus hairy particles present abundant morphologies, including dumbbell-like and typical core-shell, at the interface. The shape of adsorbed particles is analyzed in detail. The simulation data are compared with those predicted by a simple phenomenological approach. This work can promote the applications of Janus hairy particles in nanotechnology.
