AgCl-ZnAl Layered Double Hydroxides as Catalysts with Enhanced Photodegradation and Antibacterial Activities

In the View of Electrons Transfer and Energy Conversion: The Antimicrobial Activity and Cytotoxicity of Metal-Based Nanomaterials and Their Applications

The global pandemic and excessive use of antibiotics have raised concerns about environmental health, and efforts are being made to develop alternative bactericidal agents for disinfection. Metal-based nanomaterials and their derivatives have emerged as promising candidates for antibacterial agents due to their broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, environmental friendliness, and excellent biocompatibility. However, the reported antibacterial mechanisms of these materials are complex and lack a comprehensive understanding from a coherent perspective. To address this issue, a new perspective is proposed in this review to demonstrate the toxic mechanisms and antibacterial activities of metal-based nanomaterials in terms of energy conversion and electron transfer. First, the antimicrobial mechanisms of different metal-based nanomaterials are discussed, and advanced research progresses are summarized. Then, the biological intelligence applications of these materials, such as biomedical implants, stimuli-responsive electronic devices, and biological monitoring, are concluded based on trappable electrical signals from electron transfer. Finally, current improvement strategies, future challenges, and possible resolutions are outlined to provide new insights into understanding the antimicrobial behaviors of metal-based materials and offer valuable inspiration and instructional suggestions for building future intelligent environmental health.

Changes in Structural, Morphological and Optical Features of Differently Synthetized C3N4-ZnO Heterostructures: An Experimental Approach

C3N4 is an innovative material that has had huge success as a photocatalyst in recent years. More recently, it has been coupled to robust metal oxides to obtain more stable materials. This work is focused on the different synthesis techniques used to prepare bare C3N4 and combined C3N4/ZnO mixed systems. Different precursors, such as pure melamine and cyanuric acid-based supramolecular complexes, were employed for the preparation of the C3N4 material. Moreover, different solvents were also used, demonstrating that the use of water leads to the formation of a more stable heterojunction. Structural (XRD), morphological (FESEM) and optical (UV-vis) measurements underlined the role of the precursors used in the preparation of the materials. A clear trend can be extrapolated from this experimental approach involving different intimate contacts between the two C3N4 and ZnO phases, strictly connected to the particular preparation method adopted. The use of the supramolecular complexes for the preparation of C3N4 leads to a tighter association between the two phases at the heterojunction, resulting in much higher visible light harvesting (connected to lower band gap values).

Direct contact, dissolution and generation of reactive oxygen species: How to optimize the antibacterial effects of layered double hydroxides

Infections by pathogenic bacteria have been threatening several fields as food industries, agriculture, textile industries and healthcare products. Layered double hydroxides materials (LDHs), also called anionic clays, could be utilized as efficient antibacterial materials due to their several interesting properties such as ease of synthesis, tunable chemical composition, biocompatibility and anion exchange capacity. Pristine LDHs as well as LDH-composites including antibacterial molecules and nanoparticles loaded-LDHs were proven to serve as efficient antibacterial agents against various Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains. The achieved antibacterial effect was explained by the following mechanisms: (1) Direct contact between the materials and bacterial cells driven by electrostatic interactions between positively charged layers and negatively charged cell membranes, (2) Dissolution and gradual release over time of metallic ions or antibacterial molecules, (3) Generation of reactive oxygen species.

Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity of Zn-Al Layered Double Hydroxides for Methyl Violet and Peat Water Photooxidation

Zn-Al Layered Double Hydroxides (Zn-Al LDHs) and its calcined form were successfully prepared and utilized for the removal of methyl violet (MV) and treatment of peat water by photocatalytic oxidation. The research was aimed to evaluate the effect of calcination to Zn-Al LDHs for the effect on the physicochemical character and the capability as a photocatalyst. The characterization of the samples was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Brunauer–Emmet–Teller specific surface area (BET), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results showed that the increased BET specific surface area along with the enhanced porous structure was achieved by the calcination procedure, which is associated with the enhanced interlayer space of d₀₀₃ identified by XRD analysis. Thermal conversion showed an influence to the increased band gap energy from 3.10 eV in the uncalcined Zn-Al LDHs into 3.16 eV for the calcined material. These character changes contributed to the enhanced photocatalytic activity of the Zn-AL LDHs by calcination, which was proposed and verified by experiments. It was observed that photocatalytic activity of the material for MV gave about a 45.57% removal of MV and a 68% removal for the natural organic material of the peat water.

Overcoming Antibiotic Resistance: Playing the 'Silver Nanobullet' Card

Enhancing the antibacterial activity of old antibiotics by a multitarget approach, such as combining antibiotics with metal nanoparticles, is a valuable strategy to overcome antibacterial resistance. In this work, the synergistic antimicrobial effect of silver nanoparticles and antibiotics, immobilized on a solid support, was investigated. Nanometric layered double hydroxides (LDH) based on Zn(II) and Al(III) were prepared by the double microemulsion technique. The dual function of LDH as an anionic exchanger and support for metal nanoparticles was exploited to immobilize both silver and antibiotics. Cefazolin (CFZ), a β-lactam, and nalidixic acid (NAL), a quinolone, were selected and intercalated into LDH obtaining ZnAl-CFZ and ZnAl-NAL samples. These samples were used for the growth of silver nanoparticles with dimension ranging from 2.5 to 8 nm. Silver and antibiotics release profiles, from LDH loaded with antibiotics and Ag/antibiotics, were evaluated in two different media: water and phosphate buffer. Interestingly, the release profiles are affected by both the acceptor media and the presence of silver. The synergistic antibacterial activity of LDH containing both silver and antibiotics were investigated on gram-positives (Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae) and gram-negatives (Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and compared with the plain antimicrobials and LDH containing only antibiotics or silver.

Photodeposition of Silver on Zinc/Calcium Ferrite Nanoparticles: A Contribution to Efficient Effluent Remediation and Catalyst Reutilization

The efficient photodegradation of textile dyes is still a challenge, especially considering resistant azo dyes. In this work, zinc/calcium mixed ferrite nanoparticles prepared by the sol–gel method were coupled with silver by a photodeposition method to enhance the photocatalytic potency. The obtained zinc/calcium ferrites are mainly cubic-shaped nanoparticles sized 15 ± 2 nm determined from TEM and XRD and an optical bandgap of 1.6 eV. Magnetic measurements indicate a superparamagnetic behavior with saturation magnetizations of 44.22 emu/g and 27.97 emu/g, respectively, for Zn/Ca ferrite and Zn/Ca ferrite with photodeposited silver. The zinc/calcium ferrite nanoparticles with photodeposited silver showed efficient photodegradation of the textile azo dyes C.I. Reactive Blue 250 and C.I. Reactive Yellow 145. Subsequent cycles of the use of the photocatalyst indicate the possibility of magnetic recovery and reutilization without a significant loss of efficiency.

Layered double hydroxides are still out in the bloom: Syntheses, applications and advantages of three-dimensional flower-like structures

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have received great attention for years in numerous fields. Controlled and flexible layer composition, as well as the vast assortment of possible anionic guests, and easy adaptability for multipurpose applications, have been some of the many reasons behind their extraordinary success. However, versatility does not only involve the composition or the dimensions of the crystals but also their morphology. Aside from conventional hexagonal, flat structures, three-dimensional assemblies have been reported with architectures closely resembling those of flowers. The possibility of interconnecting the LDH nanosheets in rosette-like geometries has arisen the interest in finding new ways to control, modulate, and guide the particle growth obtaining hierarchical structures to be adapted to specific targets. This review is focused on describing the different strategies implemented to build flower-like assemblies, and on investigating their applications, looking for specific advantages of the use of a three-dimensional architecture over a bi-dimensional one.
