Abstract
Objective Thyroid cancer is the most common malignant endocrine tumor, with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) being the most prevalent type, accounting for 85% of thyroid cancer cases. Here, we conducted a bibliometric analysis of the literature in the field of microRNAs in PTC research to demonstrate current trends and research hotspots, and present a visual map of past and emerging trends. Methods We searched the Web of Scientific Core Collection (WoSCC) database for publications from 1999 to 2023 centered on this field. Next, we employed visualization tools such as VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and Microsoft Excel 2019 to present co-occurrence and co-citation analyses, trends, hotspots, and visual representations of contributions from authors, institutions, journals, and countries/regions. Results The bibliometric analysis encompassed the period from 1999 to 2023, with 994 papers from 54 countries/regions. The country with the most publications and highest total citations was the People's Republic of China, but the United States held the highest average citation rate. Among the top ten productive institutions, the Ohio State University (Ohio State Univ) was the most prominent contributor to this field. The JOURNAL OF CLINICAL ENDOCRINOLOGY & METABOLISM (J Clin Endocrinol Metab) ranked first in terms of citation counts and average citations among the top ten productive journals. In terms of keywords, "circular RNAs", "promotes", and "progression" have become prominent research areas. Conclusion This study elucidates current trends, hotspots, and emerging frontiers in miRNA research within PTC, and provides new insights and guidance for future identification of new PTC biomarkers and clinical trials.

Abstract
The relationship between preoperative miR-146b and miR-155 expression levels and postoperative pathology results in patients operated on for nodular thyroid disease and thyroid malignancy was investigated. Sixty three patients who were operated on for thyroid nodules diagnosed as benign, malignant and atypia of undetermined significance (AUS) were included in the study. Preoperative miR-146b and miR-155 expression levels of these patients were compared according to postoperative pathology results. Twenty three of the patients were male (36.5%) and 40 patients were female (63.5%). According to the results of fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) taken from the patients in the preoperative period, The number of benign patients was 26 (41.2%), the number of malignant patients was 17 (26.9%), the number of patients reported as suspicion of malignancy was 10 (15.8%), and the number of AUS patients reported was 10 (15.8%). The postoperative pathology of 58.7% (n = 37) of the patients was benign, and the postoperative pathology of 41.3% (n = 26) was malignant. Compared to the group with benign postoperative pathology results, miR-146b expression level significantly increased by 8.08-fold in the group with malignant postoperative pathology results (p < 0.01). Additionally, miR-146b expression level was significantly upregulated by 3.23-fold in AUS patients compared with benign pathology results (p < 0.01). Although a 1.88-fold increase in miR-155 expression level was detected in malignant patients compared to the benign group, it was determined that the expression level of miR-155 significantly increased by 2.36-fold in AUS patients (p < 0.001). Circulating miRNA could discriminate between patients with benign and malignant nodules. Our results suggest that both miR-146b and miR-155 expression levels increased in the group with malignant postoperative pathology results. Additionally, increased miR-155 expression level could be associated with AUS progression. Therefore, miRNAs could be used as preoperative malignancy biomarkers to determine the characteristics of nodules and the decision to undergo surgery.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the expression of microRNAs (miRNAs) -146b-3p, -221-5p, -222-3p, and -21a-3p and the methylation pattern of the thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor (TSHR) gene in blood plasma samples from papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) patients before and after thyroidectomy compared to healthy controls (HCs). This study included 103 participants, 46 PTC patients and 57 HCs, matched for gender and age. Significantly higher preoperative expression levels of miRNAs and TSHR methylation were determined in the PTC patients compared to HCs. Post-surgery, there was a notable decrease in these biomarkers. Elevated TSHR methylation was linked to larger tumor sizes and lymphovascular invasion, while increased miRNA-222-3p levels correlated with multifocality. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis showed AUCs below 0.8 for all candidate biomarkers. However, significant changes in the expression of all analyzed miRNAs and TSHR methylation levels indicate their potential to differentiate PTC patients from healthy individuals. These findings suggest that miRNAs and TSHR methylation levels may serve as candidate biomarkers for early diagnosis and monitoring of PTC, with the potential to distinguish PTC patients from healthy individuals. Further research is needed to validate these biomarkers for clinical application.

Abstract
Papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) is the most common endocrine malignancy. The incidence of PTC has increased annually worldwide. Thus, PTC diagnosis and treatment attract more attention. Noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) play crucial roles in PTC progression and act as prognostic biomarkers. Moreover, microRNAs (miRNAs) and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-associated proteins have potential biomarkers for diagnosing and treating PTC. However, the correlation of lncRNAs with miRNAs and EMT-associated proteins needs further clarification. The present review highlights the recent advances of lncRNAs in PTC. We significantly summarized the two molecular regulatory mechanisms in PTC progress, including lncRNAs-miRNAs-protein signaling axes and lncRNAs-EMT pathways. This review will help our understanding of the association between lncRNAs and PTC and may assist us in evaluating the prognosis for PTC patients. Taken together, targeting the lncRNAs regulatory network has promising applications in diagnosing and treating PTC.

Abstract
Molecular genetic events are among the numerous factors affecting the clinical course of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). Recent studies have demonstrated that aberrant expression of miRNA, as well as different thyroid-related genes, correlate with the aggressive clinical course of PTC and unfavorable treatment outcomes, which opens up new avenues for using them in the personalization of the treatment strategy for patients with PTC. In the present work, our goal was to assess the applicability of molecular markers in the preoperative diagnosis of aggressive variants of papillary thyroid cancer. The molecular genetic profile (expression levels of 34 different markers and BRAF mutations) was studied for 108 cytology specimens collected by fine-needle aspiration biopsy in patients with PTC having different clinical manifestations. Statistically significant differences with adjustment for multiple comparisons (p < 0.0015) for clinically aggressive variants of PTC were obtained for four markers: miRNA-146b, miRNA-221, fibronectin 1 (FN1), and cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 2A (CDKN2A) genes. A weak statistical correlation (0.0015 < p < 0.05) was observed for miRNA-31, -375, -551b, -148b, -125b, mtDNA, CITED1, TPO, HMGA2, CLU, NIS, SERPINA1, TFF3, and TMPRSS4. The recurrence risk of papillary thyroid carcinoma can be preoperatively predicted using miRNA-221, FN1, and CDKN2A genes.

Abstract
Oxidative stress (OS) is recognized as a contributing factor in the development and progression of thyroid cancer. Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) is a pivotal transcription factor involved in against OS generated by excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS). It governs the expression of a wide array of genes implicated in detoxification and antioxidant pathways. However, studies have demonstrated that the sustained activation of Nrf2 can contribute to tumor progression and drug resistance in cancers. The expression of Nrf2 was notably elevated in papillary thyroid cancer tissues compared to normal tissues, indicating that Nrf2 may play an oncogenic role in the development of papillary thyroid cancer. Nrf2 and its downstream targets are involved in the progression of thyroid cancer by impacting the prognosis and ferroptosis. Furthermore, the inhibition of Nrf2 can increase the sensitivity of target therapy in thyroid cancer. Therefore, Nrf2 appears to be a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of thyroid cancer. This review summarized current data on Nrf2 expression in thyroid cancer, discussed the function of Nrf2 in thyroid cancer, and analyzed various strategies to inhibit Nrf2.

Abstract
Neck lumps can be a symptom of thyroid and parathyroid gland metabolic diseases, and papillary thyroid carcinoma is reported in some cases. It is commonly observed in middle-aged people with a female predominance. Papillary carcinoma of the thyroid is the most common type of thyroid cancer, originating from the thyroid gland cells. It is slow-growing and less aggressive, but it has been reported to have the ability to affect nearby lymph nodes and other organs. It is associated with the RET protooncogene, NTRK1, and MET genes. Early detection is crucial, especially for middle-aged patients. Treatment typically involves thyroidectomy and radioactive iodine therapy, with the need for hormone replacement therapy. Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is an efficient and cost-effective tool for diagnosing neck swellings, leading to a conclusive diagnosis of the mass. We present a case of a 60-year-old Indian female with swelling over the neck for the past six years, which was recently accompanied by dyspnea, hand tremors, and palpitations. The ignored neck mass was found to be a hyper-echoic mass with macro calcifications and cystic degeneration on ultrasonography, confirmed as papillary thyroid carcinoma by FNAC, followed by a complete thyroidectomy and uneventful follow-up.

Abstract
In the realm of clinical management, Papillary Thyroid Cancer (PTC) stands out as a prevalent thyroid malignancy, characterized by significant metabolic challenges, particularly in the context of carbohydrate metabolism. Recent studies have unveiled promising applications of Dipeptidyl Peptidase-IV (DPP-IV) and Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, which are conventionally employed in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), as potential adjuncts in anticancer therapy. DPP-IV and SGLT2 inhibitors can be imply to counteract the Warburg effect in cancer, with a specific focus on PTC, owing to their potential metabolic advantages and their influence on the tumor microenvironment, achieved by imposing restrictions on glucose accessibility. Consequently, a comprehensive review has been undertaken, involving meticulous examination of the existing body of evidence pertaining to the utilization of DPP-IV and SGLT2 inhibitors in the context of PTC. The mechanisms of action inherent to these inhibitors have been thoroughly explored, drawing upon insights derived from preclinical investigations. Furthermore, this review initiates discussions concerning the implications for future research directions and the formulation of innovative therapeutic strategies for PTC. As the intricate interplay between carbohydrate metabolism, the Warburg effect, and cancer progression garners increasing attention, attaining a comprehensive understanding of the roles played by DPP-IV and SGLT2 inhibitors in PTC management may serve as the cornerstone for novel approaches aimed at enhancing patient care and broadening the spectrum of available therapeutic modalities.

Abstract
Papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) is the most common type of thyroid cancer, and angioinvasion, the invasion of blood vessels by cancer cells, is a crucial pathological feature associated with disease progression and poor prognosis. Thus, a comprehensive search of scientific databases was conducted to identify relevant studies investigating angioinvasion markers in PTC. The selected studies were reviewed and analyzed to assess the clinical significance and potential utility of these markers in predicting angioinvasion and guiding treatment decisions. Numerous studies have investigated various markers associated with angioinvasion in PTC, including oxidative stress, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), and other angiogenic factors. The results indicate that increased expression of these markers is correlated with the presence and extent of angioinvasion in PTC. Moreover, some studies suggest that these markers can serve as prognostic indicators and guide therapeutic strategies, such as selecting patients for more aggressive treatment approaches or targeted therapies. The findings from the reviewed literature highlight the potential clinical utility of angioinvasion markers in PTC. The identification and validation of reliable markers can aid in assessing the risk of angioinvasion, predicting disease progression, and optimizing treatment decisions for patients with PTC. However, further research and validation on larger patient cohorts are necessary to establish the robustness and generalizability of these markers in clinical practice.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to analyze the diagnostic usefulness of the combined assessment of the ultrasound risk category of the nodule (evaluated with EU-TIRADS system), the presence of BRAF V600E mutation and the expression of selected microRNAs (miR-146b, miR-221 and miR-222) in Bethesda category III thyroid nodules, separately for cases with nuclear atypia (AUS-nuclear) and cases with other types of atypia (AUS-other). We evaluated 161 nodules (66 AUS-nuclear and 95 AUS-other) with known results of postoperative histopathological examination. The rate of cancer and the rate of PTC among cancers were nearly three times higher in the AUS-nuclear than the AUS-other group. For AUS-nuclear nodules, the most effective diagnostic panel included, in addition to repeat FNA, the assessment of BRAF V600E mutation and the expression of miR-146b and miR-222 (sensitivity: 93.5%, specificity: 80.0%). For AUS-other nodules, a two-step procedure was most effective: at the first stage, forgoing surgical treatment in subjects with a benign repeat FNA outcome, and, at the second stage, the assessment of miR-222 expression and the EU-TIRADS category (sensitivity: 92.3%, specificity: 76.8%). The optimal use of molecular methods in the diagnostics of category III thyroid nodules requires a separate approach for nodules with nuclear atypia and nodules with other types of atypia.

Abstract
Angioinvasion remains the important prognostic feature in papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) patients. Literature data indicates several markers that may be associated with oxidative stress and/or angioinvasion. Therefore, we assessed the utility of selected parameters in angioinvasion and metastasis screening in serum of PTC patients. Serum antioxidant capacity (TAC) and sirtuin 3 (SIRT3) levels were decreased (all p < 0.05) and both DNA/RNA oxidative stress damage products (DNA/RNA OSDP) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were increased in PTC patients with angioinvasion and metastasis (study group) when compared with PTC patients without these features (all p < 0.01). The highest screening utility in differentiation between angioinvasion and metastasis presence and absence in PTC patients was presented for DNA/RNA OSDP (AUC = 0.71), SIRT3 (AUC = 0.70), and TAC (AUC = 0.67) (all p < 0.05). Our study suggests that peripheral concentration of oxidative stress markers could be useful as angioinvasion and metastasis indicator in PTC patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The incidence of stroke has been rising annually and investigations into traditional risk factors have led to increased attention on genetic factors. In this study, we focused on the pri-let-7f gene, and investigated the association between pri-let-7f gene polymorphisms and ischemic stroke (IS). METHODS This case-control study included 1803 patients and 1456 healthy controls of Han ethnicity living in Liaoning Province. We carried out genotyping analysis of two loci, pri-let-7f-1 rs10739971 and pri-let-7f-2 rs17276588, and performed statistical analysis controlling for confounding factors by logistic regression. RESULTS The A alleles and AA genotypes of both loci were significantly associated with an increased risk of IS. Variant genotypes of rs17276588 may also increase the risk of IS in females with alcohol intake. Gene-gene interaction analysis showed combined effects of mutations in both these single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrated an association between pri-let-7f SNPs and IS, providing potential latent biomarkers for the risk of IS. However, more detailed studies are needed to clarify these results.

Abstract
Total oxidative status (TOS), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), tumor protein 53 (p53), nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), forkhead box protein O1 (FOXO), and sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) play crucial roles in oxidative homeostasis and the progression of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC), as previously demonstrated in the literature. Therefore, profiling these markers among PTC patients may be useful in determining their eligibility for radioiodine (RAI) treatment. Since treatment indications are based on multiple and dynamic recommendations, additional criteria for adjuvant RAI therapy are still needed. In our study, we evaluated the TOS, TAC, and serum concentrations of p53, NF-κB, FOXO, and SIRT1 to analyze the relationship between oxidative status and qualification for RAI treatment. For the purpose of this study, we enrolled 60 patients with PTC allocated for RAI treatment as the study group and 25 very low-risk PTC patients not allocated for RAI treatment as a reference group. The serum TOS and SIRT1 concentrations were significantly higher in the study group compared to the reference group (both p < 0.001), whereas the TAC and p53, NK-κB, and FOXO concentrations were significantly lower (all p < 0.05). We also demonstrated the diagnostic utility of TAC (AUC = 0.987), FOXO (AUC = 0.648), TOS (AUC = 0.664), SIRT1 (AUC = 0.709), p53 (AUC = 0.664), and NF-κB (AUC = 0.651) measurements as indications for RAI treatment based on American Thyroid Association recommendations. Our study revealed that oxidative status-related markers may become additional criteria for RAI treatment in PTC patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE In this study, we evaluated the biological role of miRNA-31-5p in papillary thyroid cancer (PTC). METHODS By using the real-time PCR, we measured miRNA-31-5p expression levels in 25 PTC tissues and in two human PTC cell lines (K1 and TPC-1). Then, K1 cells were transiently transfected with mirVana inhibitor or mirVana mimic to miRNA-31-5-p. Cell proliferation was determined by MTT and colony formation assays. The in vitro metastatic ability of thyroid cancer cells was evaluated by adhesion, migration and invasion assays. Epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT) and Hippo pathway related gene and protein levels were evaluated by using the TaqMan™ Gene Expression Assays and western blot analysis, respectively. RESULTS We found a significant increase of miR-31-5-p expression in tumor tissue and in K1 cells harboring the BRAF p.V600E mutation. Knockdown of miR-31-5p determined a reduction of cell proliferation, associated with a significant decrease in cell adhesion, migration and invasion properties. A downregulation of EMT markers and YAP/β-catenin axis was also observed. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that miRNA-31-5p acts as oncogenic miRNA in human thyrocytes and its overexpression may be involved in the BRAF-related tumorigenesis in PTCs, providing new understanding into its pathological role in PTC progression and invasiveness.

Abstract
Thyroid cancer (TC) is the most prevalent endocrine malignant tumor. It has many types, the Papillary thyroid cancer (PTC)(most common and follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC). Several risk factors have been associated with TC radiation exposure, autoimmunity, and genetics. Microribonucleic acids (miRNAs) are the most important genetic determinants of TC. They are small chains of nucleic acids that are able to inhibit the expression of several target genes. They could target several genes involved in TC proliferation, angiogenesis, apoptosis, development, and even resistance to therapy. Besides, they could influence the stemness of TC. Moreover, they could regulate several signaling pathways such as WNT/β-catenin, PI3K/AKT/mTOR axis, JAK/STAT, TGF- β, EGFR, and P53. Besides signaling pathways, miRNAs are also involved in the resistance of TC to major treatments such as surgery, thyroid hormone-inhibiting therapy, radioactive iodine, and adjuvant radiation. The stability and sensitivity of several miRNAs might be exploited as an approach for the usage of miRNAs as diagnostic and/or prognostic tools in TC.

Abstract
Intoduction Identification of molecular alterations associated with tumor behavior is necessary to guide clinical management. The 2022 WHO classification has organized the thyroid follicular cell-derived neoplasms into benign, low-risk and high-risk neoplasms, and emphasized the value of biomarkers that may provide differential diagnostic and prognostic information to avoid overtreatment of low risk neoplasms. This work aims to study the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) expression, functional and spatial dynamics in relation to specific miRNAs alterations in papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) and in non-invasive follicular thyroid neoplasm with papillary-like nuclear features (NIFTP) considered as models of high-risk and low-risk thyroid tumors respectively. Methods Primary thyroid cultured cells were used for miRNA gain/loss of function and luciferase reporter assays. Paraffin embedded tissues were used for real time PCR, immuno-fluorescence stain and confocal microscopy experiments. Results Our results showed that in PTC, EGFR mRNA is reduced as an effect of miR-146b-5p upregulation. The EGF expression is low and the ERK pathway is inhibited. The EGFR protein high cytoplasmic expression and colocalization with the endosomal/exosomal markers, ALIX and CD63, suggest the occurrence of stress-induced EGFR internalization, accumulation in endosomal vesicles and secretion via exosomes. In NIFTP EGFR transcription is increased in association with downregulation of miR-7-5p and the EGFR/ERK pathway is active indicating dependence on the canonical EGFR pathway for growth. Conclusion Downregulation of transcript level along with cytoplasmic accumulation of undegraded protein is a new pattern of EGFR regulation associated with malignancy in thyroid. Further research is needed to elucidate the intracellular trafficking defects responsible for this specific EGFR dynamic in PTC.

Abstract
Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) has a favorable prognosis, but a fraction of cases show progressive behaviors, becoming radioiodine refractory (RAIR) PTC. To explore circulating exosomal microRNAs (miRNAs) associated with RAIR PTC, the miRNA profiles in exosomes from parental and induced RAIR cell lines were firstly identified with a next-generation sequencing technique. The Na+/I- symporter (NIS) related miRNAs were then validated by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) in plasma of PTC patients with non-131I-avid metastases and those with 131I-avid metastases. The regulation of exosomal miRNAs on NIS were also verified. We identified that miR-1296-5p, upregulation in exosomes from RAIR cell lines, and the plasma of patients with RAIR PTC achieved the largest areas under the curve (AUC) of 0.911 and that it is an independent risk factor for RAIR PTC. In addition, miR-1296-5p was abundantly detected in the tissue of RAIR PTC and can directly target downstream gene of NIS. Taken together, our findings suggested that circulating exosomal miRNAs, particularly miR-1296-5p, may be involved in the pathogenesis of RAIR PTC by directly targeting NIS.

Abstract
Simple Summary Thyroid tumors represent the most common neoplastic pathology of the endocrine system. Mutations occurring in oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes are responsible for thyroid carcinogenesis; however, the complete mutational landscape characterizing these neoplasias has not been completely unveiled. It has been established that only the 2% of the human genome codes for proteins, suggesting that the vast majority of the genome has regulatory capabilities, which, if altered, could account for the onset of cancer. Hence, many scientific efforts are currently focused on the characterization of the heterogeneous class of noncoding RNAs, which represent an abundant part of the transcribed noncoding genome. In this review, we mainly focus on the involvement of microRNAs, long noncoding RNAs, and pseudogenes in thyroid cancer. The determination of the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of thyroid cancers based on the evaluation of the noncoding RNA network could allow the implementation of a more personalized approach to fighting these pathologies. Abstract Among the thyroid neoplasias originating from follicular cells, we can include well-differentiated carcinomas, papillary (PTC) and follicular (FTC) thyroid carcinomas, and the undifferentiated anaplastic (ATC) carcinomas. Several mutations in oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes have already been observed in these malignancies; however, we are still far from the comprehension of their full regulation-altered landscape. Even if only 2% of the human genome has the ability to code for proteins, most of the noncoding genome is transcribed, constituting the heterogeneous class of noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs), whose alterations are associated with the development of several human diseases, including cancer. Hence, many scientific efforts are currently focused on the elucidation of their biological role. In this review, we analyze the scientific literature regarding the involvement of microRNAs (miRNAs), long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs), and pseudogenes in FTC, PTC, and ATC. Recent findings emphasized the role of lncRNAs in all steps of cancer progression. In particular, lncRNAs may control progression steps by regulating the expression of genes and miRNAs involved in cell proliferation, apoptosis, epithelial–mesenchymal transition, and metastatization. In conclusion, the determination of the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of cancer based on the evaluation of the ncRNA network could allow the implementation of a more personalized approach to fighting thyroid tumors.

Abstract
The incidence of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) has increased in recent years. To improve the diagnostic management of PTC, we propose the use of microRNAs (miRNAs) as a biomarker. Our aim in this study was to evaluate the miRNA expression pattern in PTC using NanoString technology. We identified ten miRNAs deregulated in PTC compared with reference tissue: miR-146b-5p, miR-221-3p, miR-221-5p, miR-34-5p, miR-551b-3p, miR-152-3p, miR-15a-5p, miR-31-5p, and miR-7-5p (FDR < 0.05; |fold change (FC)| ≥ 1.5). The gene ontology (GO) analysis of differentially expressed miRNA (DEM) target genes identified the predominant involvement of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), tyrosine kinase inhibitor resistance, and pathways in cancer in PTC. The highest area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) for DEMs was found for miR-146-5p (AUC = 0.770) expression, indicating possible clinical applicability in PTC diagnosis. The combination of four miRNAs (miR-152-3p, miR-221-3p, miR-551b-3p, and miR-7-5p) showed an AUC of 0.841. Validation by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reactions (qRT-PCRs) confirmed our findings. The introduction of an miRNA diagnostic panel based on the results of our study may help to improve therapeutic decision making for questionable cases. The use of miRNAs as biomarkers of PTC may become an aspect of personalized medicine.

Abstract
Autosomal aneuploidies are the most frequently occurring congenital abnormalities and are related to many metabolic disorders, hormonal dysfunctions, neurotransmitter abnormalities, and intellectual disabilities. Trisomies are generated by an error of chromosomal segregation during cell division. Accumulating evidence has shown that deregulated gene expression resulting from the triplication of chromosomes 13 and 18 is associated with many disturbed cellular processes. Moreover, a disturbed oxidative stress status may be implicated in the occurrence of fetal malformations. Therefore, a literature review was undertaken to provide novel insights into the evaluation of trisomy 13 (T13) and 18 (T18) pathogeneses, with a particular concern on the oxidative stress. Corresponding to the limited literature data focused on factors leading to T13 and T18 phenotype occurrence, the importance of oxidative stress evaluation in T13 and T18 could enable the determination of subsequent disturbed metabolic pathways, highlighting the related role of mitochondrial dysfunction or epigenetics. This review illustrates up-to-date T13 and T18 research and discusses the strengths, limitations, and possible directions for future studies. The progressive unification of trisomy-related research protocols might provide potential medical targets in the future along with the implementation of the foundation of modern prenatal medicine.

Abstract
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short, noncoding, single-stranded RNA molecules that regulate gene expression at the post-transcriptional level by binding to mRNAs. miRNAs affect the course of processes of fundamental importance for the proper functioning of the organism. These processes include cell division, proliferation, differentiation, cell apoptosis and the formation of blood vessels. Altered expression of individual miRNAs has been shown in numerous cancers, which may indicate the oncogenic or suppressor potential of the molecules in question. This paper discusses the current knowledge about the possibility of using miRNA as a diagnostic marker and a potential target in modern anticancer therapies.

Abstract
This review summarizes the changes in the 5th edition of the WHO Classification of Endocrine and Neuroendocrine Tumors that relate to the thyroid gland. The new classification has divided thyroid tumors into several new categories that allow for a clearer understanding of the cell of origin, pathologic features (cytopathology and histopathology), molecular classification, and biological behavior. Follicular cell-derived tumors constitute the majority of thyroid neoplasms. In this new classification, they are divided into benign, low-risk, and malignant neoplasms. Benign tumors include not only follicular adenoma but also variants of adenoma that are of diagnostic and clinical significance, including the ones with papillary architecture, which are often hyperfunctional and oncocytic adenomas. For the first time, there is a detailed account of the multifocal hyperplastic/neoplastic lesions that commonly occur in the clinical setting of multinodular goiter; the term thyroid follicular nodular disease (FND) achieved consensus as the best to describe this enigmatic entity. Low-risk follicular cell-derived neoplasms include non-invasive follicular thyroid neoplasm with papillary-like nuclear features (NIFTP), thyroid tumors of uncertain malignant potential, and hyalinizing trabecular tumor. Malignant follicular cell-derived neoplasms are stratified based on molecular profiles and aggressiveness. Papillary thyroid carcinomas (PTCs), with many morphological subtypes, represent the BRAF-like malignancies, whereas invasive encapsulated follicular variant PTC and follicular thyroid carcinoma represent the RAS-like malignancies. This new classification requires detailed subtyping of papillary microcarcinomas similar to their counterparts that exceed 1.0 cm and recommends not designating them as a subtype of PTC. The criteria of the tall cell subtype of PTC have been revisited. Cribriform-morular thyroid carcinoma is no longer classified as a subtype of PTC. The term "Hürthle cell" is discouraged, since it is a misnomer. Oncocytic carcinoma is discussed as a distinct entity with the clear recognition that it refers to oncocytic follicular cell-derived neoplasms (composed of > 75% oncocytic cells) that lack characteristic nuclear features of PTC (those would be oncocytic PTCs) and high-grade features (necrosis and ≥ 5 mitoses per 2 mm2). High-grade follicular cell-derived malignancies now include both the traditional poorly differentiated carcinoma as well as high-grade differentiated thyroid carcinomas, since both are characterized by increased mitotic activity and tumor necrosis without anaplastic histology and clinically behave in a similar manner. Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma remains the most undifferentiated form; squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid is now considered as a subtype of anaplastic carcinoma. Medullary thyroid carcinomas derived from thyroid C cells retain their distinct section, and there is a separate section for mixed tumors composed of both C cells and any follicular cell-derived malignancy. A grading system for medullary thyroid carcinomas is also introduced based on mitotic count, tumor necrosis, and Ki67 labeling index. A number of unusual neoplasms that occur in the thyroid have been placed into new sections based on their cytogenesis. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma and secretory carcinoma of the salivary gland type are now included in one section classified as "salivary gland-type carcinomas of the thyroid." Thymomas, thymic carcinomas and spindle epithelial tumor with thymus-like elements are classified as "thymic tumors within the thyroid." There remain several tumors whose cell lineage is unclear, and they are listed as such; these include sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma with eosinophilia and cribriform-morular thyroid carcinoma. Another important addition is thyroblastoma, an unusual embryonal tumor associated with DICER1 mutations. As in all the WHO books in the 5th edition, mesenchymal and stromal tumors, hematolymphoid neoplasms, germ cell tumors, and metastatic malignancies are discussed separately. The current classification also emphasizes the value of biomarkers that may aid diagnosis and provide prognostic information.
