Treatment of Mandibular Hypomobility by Injections into the Temporomandibular Joints: A Systematic Review of the Substances Used

Temporomandibular Joint Injections and Lavage: An Overview of Reviews

Objectives: This overview was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Overviews of Reviews guidelines and aimed to collect and compare the results of systematic reviews on temporomandibular joint injection treatment. Methods: Systematic reviews of randomized clinical trials on temporomandibular disorders treated with lavage or intra-articular administrations were qualified for syntheses. The final searches were conducted on 27 February 2024, without time frame restrictions. Results: Of the 232 identified records, 42 systematic reviews were selected. The most evidence-based conclusions call into question the clinical differences between many therapeutic approaches, including the following: (1) injectable selection for the treatment of pain and hypomobility; (2) the method of performing arthrocentesis; (3) the use of imaging when rinsing the TMJ cavity; (4) the supplementation of the extracapsular administration of unprocessed blood with intracapsular deposition in the treatment of TMJ hypermobility. Conclusions: Systematic reviews based solely on randomized clinical trials proved the following differences: (1) in painful temporomandibular hypomobility, a better therapeutic effect is observed with arthrocentesis followed by I-PRF administration compared to lavage alone; (2) in painful temporomandibular hypomobility, inferior- or double-compartment injection leads to better results than superior-compartment injection; (3) in temporomandibular joint recurrent dislocation, hypertonic dextrose administration is superior to placebo, although (4) unprocessed blood has a better effect than hypertonic dextrose. The application of extracorporeal shock wave therapy in the treatment of temporomandibular joint disorders in a preliminary, small sample study

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of low-intensity, high-frequency shock waves in the treatment of temporomandibular joint disorders.

METHODS

Twenty-six patients with temporomandibular joint disorder admitted to the Second Hospital of Shanxi Medical University from August 2022 to December 2022 were selected as study subjects and randomly divided into two groups, A and B, with 13 patients each. In Group A, there were 5 males and 8 females with an average age of 38.85 ± 11.03 years. In Group B, there were 4 males and 9 females with an average age of 39.15 ± 11.16 years. Group A was the control group, which received routine treatment (manual massage + transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation + ultrashort wave therapy) plus sham shock wave therapy; Group B was the experimental group, which received routine treatment (manual massage + transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation + ultrashort wave therapy) plus shock wave therapy. The routine treatment was administered once/day, five times per week for a total of 2 weeks of treatment. In addition, shock wave therapy was administered once every 5 days, and the treatment was administered three times. The treatment period was 2 weeks, and the two groups were compared before treatment, at the end of the treatment period, and 4 weeks after treatment. The pain level of the two groups was assessed by the visual analogue scale (VAS) before and after treatment, and the temporomandibular opening index (TOI) before and after treatment was compared between the two groups. VAS and TOI scores were evaluated using the Mann-Whitney U-test, the Kruskal-Wallis H-test and two-way ANOVA.

RESULTS

There was no significant difference in the VAS score and temporomandibular opening index between the two groups before treatment (p = .829 and .75, respectively). After 2 weeks of treatment, the VAS score and temporomandibular joint opening index of both groups were significantly improved compared to those before therapy. In addition, the VAS score and temporomandibular joint opening index in the experimental group were significantly better than those in the control group (p < .001 and <.001, respectively). There was a small increase in scores 4 weeks after the treatment compared to just after the treatment period, but the difference was not significant.

CONCLUSION

This is a preliminary small sample study that demonstrates the positive effect of using low-intensity, high-frequency shock waves on the treatment of temporomandibular joint disorders and is worthy of clinical promotion.

Intra-Articular Local Anesthetics in Temporomandibular Disorders: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

This systematic review with meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of local anesthetic administration into temporomandibular joint cavities in relieving pain and increasing mandibular mobility. Randomized controlled trials were included with no limitation on report publication dates. Final searches were performed on 15 October 2023, using engines provided by the US National Library, Bielefeld University, and Elsevier Publishing House. The risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias 2 tool. Articular pain and mandible abduction values and their mean differences were summarized in tables and graphs. Eight studies on a total of 252 patients evaluating intra-articular administration of articaine, bupivacaine, lidocaine, and mepivacaine were included in the systematic review. None of the eligible studies presented a high risk of bias in any of the assessed domains. An analgesic effect of intra-articular bupivacaine was observed for up to 24 h. In the long-term follow-up, there were no statistically significant changes in quantified pain compared to both the baseline value and the placebo group, regardless of the anesthetic used (articaine, bupivacaine, and lidocaine). There is no scientific evidence on the effect of intra-articular administration of local anesthesia on the range of motion of the mandible. Therefore, in the current state of knowledge, the administration of local anesthetics into the temporomandibular joint cavities can only be considered as a short-term pain relief measure.

Hyaluronic acid injections for pain relief and functional improvement in patients with temporomandibular disorders: An umbrella review of systematic reviews

BACKGROUND

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are the main cause of chronic facial pain, and intra-articular (IA) injections of hyaluronic acid (HA) are commonly performed.

OBJECTIVES

This umbrella review of systematic reviews aimed at analysing the effectiveness of HA injections on pain and functional outcomes in patients affected by TMD.

METHODS

PubMed, Cochrane Library and PEDro were systematically searched from inception until 17 January 2023 to identify systematic reviews evaluating the effects on pain and functional outcomes of HA IA injections. PROSPERO registration number: CRD42022382586.

RESULTS

Out of 316 papers suitable for title/abstract screening, 18 articles were included in the umbrella review. Thirteen studies included only randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs). The included systematic reviews reported no statistically significant differences between HA and corticosteroids, whereas platelet derivates seem to have good results in pain relief. The literature did not show severe adverse events, except for mild pain in the site of injection. Concerning the quality assessment of the 18 systematic reviews, 2 (11.11%) had a high quality, 3 (16.67%) a moderate quality, 7 (38.89%) a low quality and 6 (33.33%) a critically low quality.

CONCLUSIONS

Taken together, findings of this umbrella review showed intriguing effects of IA HA injections in terms of reduction of pain intensity and improvement of functioning in patients affected by TMD. Furthermore, there is no agreement on the effectiveness of a combination of arthrocentesis or arthroscopy with IA HA injections. Although the literature showed these positive results after IA HA injections, the overlapping of primary studies in the systematic reviews included might have affect our results, such as the very low quality of the papers. Thus, further RCTs are needed to confirm the efficacy of IA injections of HA on pain relief in patients with TMD.

Autologous Blood Injections in Temporomandibular Hypermobility: A Systematic Review

The injection of autologous blood (AB) is one of the methods of treatment of recurrent dislocations in the temporomandibular joints (TMJs). Due to the low invasiveness of this technique, it is reasonable to evaluate it in accordance with the standards of evidence-based medicine. The purpose of this systematic review is to identify primary studies on AB injection for the treatment of TMJ hypermobility and assess the therapy for effectiveness. This systematic review was conducted in accordance with the current "Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses" guidelines. Controlled randomized trials comparing dislocation episode rates, range of motion in the TMJ, or articular pain intensity were adopted as the eligibility criteria. Final searches were conducted on 11 June 2023 using Bielefeld Academic Search Engine, Elsevier Scopus, and the National Library of Medicine: PubMed. Trials were assessed using the "Oxford Center for Evidence-Based Medicine 2011 Levels of Evidence" scale and "A revised Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomized trials". The results of the individual studies were tabulated, syntheses were illustrated in graphs. Twenty two studies involving 982 patients were included in the qualitative analysis, of which seven studies involving 390 patients were subject to quantitative analysis. None of the included randomized controlled trials presented a high risk of bias, 75% of them raised some concerns. In a three-month observation, administration of AB was more efficient in limiting temporomandibular dislocations than hypertonic dextrose (1 study, 32 patients, relative risk = 0.33, odds ratio = 0.29) and no difference in outcomes was observed between intracavitary and pericapsular administration compared to pericapsular injection alone (2 studies, 70 patients, relative risk = 1.00, odds ratio = 1.00). Injections of AB into the temporomandibular joints are effective in preventing further TMJ dislocation episodes in 75-94% of patients. This study received no funding.

Current Clinical Research Directions on Temporomandibular Joint Intra-Articular Injections: A Mapping Review

This mapping review aims to identify and discuss current research directions on intracavitary temporomandibular joints (TMJs) injections. The inclusion criteria allowed studies published in the last full six years, based on patients diagnosed with temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs), treated by TMJ intra-articular injections. Medical databases covered by the Association for Computing Machinery, Bielefeld Academic Search Engine, PubMed, and Elsevier Scopus engines were searched. The results were visualized with tables, charts, and diagrams. Of the 2712 records identified following the selection process, 152 reports were qualified for review. From January 2017, viscosupplementation with hyaluronic acid (HA) was the best-documented injectable administered into TMJ cavities. However, a significant growing trend was observed in the number of primary studies on centrifuged blood preparations administrations that surpassed the previously leading HA from 2021.

State of the Art in Temporomandibular Joint Arthrocentesis-A Systematic Review

Temporomandibular joint disorders are a heterogenic group of clinical conditions, which impair physiological functioning of the masticatory system. Arthrocentesis of the temporomandibular joint has become a widely approved method for non-invasive treatment, bridging the gap between conservative and surgical approaches. Regardless of technique, treatment is based upon joint lavage and lysis of the inflammatory fibrous tissue adhesions, which, in turn, improves joint mobility and reduces pain and closed lock. Recently, approaches for intra-articular injections have been proposed as adjuvant or replacement therapy. The aim of this study was to assess the most efficient technique of arthrocentesis. A systematic search based on PRISMA guidelines, including a computer search with specific keywords, a reference list search and a manual search, was performed. Relevant articles were selected after three search rounds for final review. The studies pulled for the analysis presented information about the relevant predictors, including the technique of arthrocentesis (single- or two-needle method), fluid used for lavage (Ringer lactate or saline), volume of the fluid, application of the injectable, number of interventions, pain (VAS) and mouth opening scores (MMO) and follow-up. All cohorts showed improvement in mouth opening, but significant pain reduction was observed only in cohorts treated either by arthrocentesis alone or arthrocentesis followed by intra-articular injectables. Intra-articular injectables used alone failed to reduce pain post-operatively when compared to other cohorts. We concluded that both double-needle and single-puncture arthrocentesis techniques are equally efficient. Application of the adjuvant injectable did not improve the outcomes of arthrocentesis performed alone. The volume of the fluid used for joint lavage and its chemical composition were not significant in clinical outcomes. However, due to the lack of homogeneity in the study settings, a meta-analysis could not be applied and a systematic review was conducted. We still, however, state that there is a knowledge gap in the current literature regarding the use of injectables alone, as well as a longitudinal follow-up, which provides information about treatment efficiency. More high-quality and randomized controlled trials are required to shed light on this subject.

Injectable Platelet-Rich Fibrin (I-PRF) Administered to Temporomandibular Joint Cavities: A Scoping Review

The aim of this review was to systematically map the research on the intra-articular administration of injectable platelet-rich fibrin (I-PRF) to the temporomandibular joints (TMJs). Medical databases covered by the ACM, BASE, Google, NLM, and ResearchGate were searched on 23 February 2023. The assessment of the level of evidence was based on the Oxford Center for Evidence-Based Medicine 2011 scale. The risk of bias was assessed for randomized controlled trials with the RoB2 tool. Extracted data were tabulated, and the changes in effect values were calculated. A total of eight studies qualified, of which five trials on 213 patients were randomized and controlled (RCTs). In each of the RTC study groups, arthrocentesis was performed, and 1-2 mL per joint of I-PRF (700 rpm/3 min/60 g centrifugation) was administered. Articular pain in three months decreased to 0-25% of the initial pre-interventional values in the study and 38-50% in the control groups. Mandible mobility increased to 121-153% and 115-120% in the I-PRF groups and controls, respectively. The main limitations of the evidence were the small number of RCTs and the lack of any RCT study groups receiving I-PRF without prior arthrocentesis. In conclusion, supplementing the temporomandibular joint rinsing with I-PRF administration further relieves pain and improves mandible mobility. The lack of RCTs on the intra-articular administration of I-PRF as a stand-alone procedure encourages further research. This research received no external funding. A comparative study of the efficacy of intra-articular injection of different drugs in the treatment of mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis: A network meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) has a high clinical prevalence and frequently interferes with patients normal lives. In KOA patients, evidence suggests that intra-articular (IA) injection improves joint function and decreases discomfort. Several IA injection treatments are used in daily practice to improve symptomatic control of knee osteoarthritis, but their efficacy is frequently disputed.

METHODS

This network meta-analysis compares the efficacy of different IA injections for mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis. Seven databases (PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, China Biology Medicine disc, WanFang, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure) were searched for randomized controlled trials published up to and including December 20, 2021, and final follow up indicators were used. Visual analogue scale (VAS) score and The Western Ontario and McMaster Universities (WOMAC) Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) score change from baseline were the primary outcomes. We used the Cochrane risk of bias tool to assess the quality and risks of biases of papers. We calculated the weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for each outcome. State (Version 15.1, Texas, USA) and SPSS (Version 20, Chicago, USA) was used in all statistical analyses, and Review Manager (version 5.4) was used in assessing the risks of biases.

RESULTS

Our study included 16 randomized controlled trials with a total of 1652 patients. platelet-rich plasma (PRP) IA injection therapy had the highest likelihood of being the best intervention in reducing WOMAC pain (surface under the cumulative ranking area [SUCRA] 84.7%), stiffness (SUCRA 95.1%), and function (SUCRA 98.5%) scores, according to the SUCRA. The best measures for lowering the WOMAC total and VAS scores were IA injection platelet-rich plasma-derived growth factor (SUCRA 84.9%) and hyaluronic acid and platelet-rich plasma (SUCRA 84.9%). In the VAS score group, PRP outperformed hyaluronic acid (HA) (WMD 1.3, 95% CI 0.55-2.55) and corticosteroids (CS) (WMD 4.85, 95% CI 4.02-5.08), according to the forest map results. PRP also outperformed CS (WMD 14.76, 95% CI 12.11-17.41), ozone (WMD 9.16, 95% CI 6.89-11.43), and PRP + HA (WMD 2.18, 95% CI 0.55-3.81) in the WOMAC total score group. Furthermore, PRP outperforms other drugs in terms of reducing WOMAC function, stiffness, and function score.

CONCLUSION

In patients with mild to moderate KOA, IA injection PRP outperformed IA injection ozone, HA, CS, platelet-rich plasma-derived growth factor, and hyaluronic acid and platelet-rich plasma in terms of pain, stiffness, and dysfunction.

Intra-Articular Injections into the Inferior versus Superior Compartment of the Temporomandibular Joint: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to validate the hypothesis that intra-articular injections into the inferior temporomandibular joint compartment are more efficient than analogous superior compartment interventions. Publications reporting differences between the above-mentioned techniques in the domains of revealing articular pain, decreasing the Helkimo index, and abolishing mandibular mobility limitation were included. Medical databases covered by the Bielefeld Academic Search Engine, Google Scholar, PubMed, ResearchGate, and Scopus engines were searched. The risk of bias was assessed using dedicated Cochrane tools (RoB2, ROBINS-I). The results were visualized with tables, charts, and a funnel plot. Six reports describing five studies with a total of 342 patients were identified. Of these, four trials on a total of 337 patients were qualified for quantitative synthesis. Each eligible report was at moderate risk of bias. From 19% to 51% improvement in articular pain, 12-20% lower Helkimo index, and 5-17% higher maximum mouth opening were observed. The evidence was limited by the small number of eligible studies, discrepancies regarding the substances used, possible biases, and the differences in observation times and scheduled follow-up visits. Despite the above, the advantage of inferior over superior compartment temporomandibular joint intra-articular injections is unequivocal and encourages further research in this direction.

Effects of joint irrigation combined with ozone injection on bone metabolism, inflammatory factors, and joint function in knee osteoarthritis

OBJECTIVE

To explore the effects of joint irrigation combined with ozone injection on bone metabolism, inflammatory factors, and joint function in patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA).

METHOD

In this retrospective study, a total of 132 KOA patients admitted to No. 215 Hospital of Shaanxi Nuclear Industry from October 2019 to July 2021 were enrolled. Among them, 62 patients received arthroscopic irrigation alone were assigned into a control group, and the remaining 70 patients who received arthroscopic irrigation combined with ozone injection were assigned into an observation group. Therapeutic efficacy and adverse reactions during the treatment were compared in the two groups. Bone metabolism, inflammatory factor levels and joint function of patients before and after treatment were observed; patients were further divided into a good prognosis group and a poor prognosis group regarding their prognosis. Multivariate analysis was performed to explore the independent risk factors affecting prognosis.

RESULTS

After treatment, compared to the control group, the total effective rate of the observation group was higher (P<0.05), and there was no notable difference in the incidence of adverse reactions between the two groups (P>0.05). The bone metabolism indexes, osteocalcin (OC) and osteoprotegerin (OPG), in the observation group were also significantly higher (P<0.05), while the level of nuclear transcription factor κB receptor activator ligand (RANKL) in the observation group was markedly lower. The inflammation level in the observation group was lower (P<0.05). Lysholm score in the observation group was strikingly higher (P<0.05), while its Western Ontario McMaster (WOMAC) score and visual analogue scale (VAS) were lower (P<0.05). The observation group had a lower rate of poor prognosis (P<0.05). Age (OR: 1.786, 95% CI: 1.347-2.370), disease duration (OR: 1.132, 95% CI: 1.002-1.279), VAS after treatment (OR: 2.316, 95% CI: 1.089-4.925), and post-treatment IL-6 (OR: 1.186, 95% CI: 1.017-1.382) were all independent risk factors for poor prognosis.

CONCLUSION

Joint irrigation combined with ozone injection shows good efficacy in the treatment of KOA, and could effectively relieve the clinical symptoms of patients, improve their bone metabolism indexes, and help the recovery of knee joint function.

Topical-Ozonized Olive Oil - A Boon for Post-Extraction Cases: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Background Post-surgical therapy in exodontia patients has historically been largely centered on pain and infection prevention. Healing of the extraction wound has rarely received any importance during regular dental extractions, despite being an inherent element of the process of tooth extraction itself. This study aimed to analyze the analgesic and antibacterial efficacy of topical-ozonized olive oil compared to regular drugs administered post-operatively to patients who have undergone tooth extraction as well as evaluate the healing effects of the former on the extraction site. Methodology A total of 200 patients in need of exodontia were randomly divided into two groups, with group A (case group) receiving ozonized olive oil as a topical application for three days and group B (control group) receiving standard post-operative treatment (antibiotics and analgesics). On day five, patients in both groups were assessed for wound healing using the Landry, Turnbull, and Howley Index and for pain using the visual analog scale (VAS). Results On days two and three, the P-value for differences in pain (VAS score) between the two groups was 0.409, but on day five, it was 0.180. According to the Landry, Turnbull, and Howley index, the P-value for differences in wound healing between the groups on day five was 0.025. When comparing the two groups, there was no discernible difference in the amount of discomfort perceived after surgery. While both groups saw improvement in wound healing and pain, the case group coped better than the control group in terms of wound healing. Conclusions This study demonstrated that ozonized olive oil may be used as a safe and effective alternative to conventional painkillers and antibiotics and can speed up wound healing after exodontia.

A Scoping Review of the Use of Pioglitazone in the Treatment of Temporo-Mandibular Joint Arthritis

Thiazolidinediones (TZDs) are a group of diabetes medications currently being investigated for anti-arthritis effectiveness, one of which is pioglitazone. The purpose of this scoping review is to evaluate the potential use of pioglitazone in the treatment of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthritis. The criteria of eligibility were studies with the diagnosis of arthritis and pioglitazone treatment with a change in any inflammation index as an outcome. Of the 1169 records initially identified following the selection process, two animal studies and four clinical studies were included in the review. Improvements from the baseline were observed in each treatment group for each inflammation indicator. The results of the animal studies on the temporomandibular joints and on patients with rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis indicate that the drug in question may have potential to treat arthritis, including within the temporomandibular joint.

Autologous Stem Cells Transplants in the Treatment of Temporomandibular Joints Disorders: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Clinical Trials

This systematic review aims to analyze the outcomes of the treatment of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) articular pain (AP) and restricted maximum mouth opening (MMO) with intra-articular administration of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). The inclusion criteria allowed primary studies involving AP and/or MMO pre-treatment and post-intervention values. Medical databases that were covered by ACM Digital, BASE, EBSCOhost, Google Scholar, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science engines were searched. The risk of bias was assessed with RoB 2 and ROBINS-I tools. The results were tabulated, plotted, and analyzed for regression. A total of 5 studies involving 51 patients/69 TMJs were identified, and 4 studies on 50 patients/67 TMJs were synthesized. Interventions were each time effective in decreasing AP and increasing MMO in a 6-month follow-up period by an average of about 85% and over 40%, respectively. Regression analysis showed a good fit of the logarithmic model for AP relief (5.8 − 0.8 ln x; R² = 0.90) and MMO increase (33.5 + 2.4 ln x; R² = 0.89). The results for AP and MMO were based on 3 studies in 39 patients and 4 studies in 50 patients, respectively, all at high risk of bias. The intra-articular administration of MSCs to TMJs, based on weak evidence, may be highly effective in reducing AP and improving MMO. This study received no funding.

Position of the Hyoid Bone and Dimension of Nasopharynx and Oropharynx after Occlusal Splint Therapy and Physiotherapy in Patients Diagnosed with Temporomandibular Disorders

Background: The aim of the study was to assess the position of the hyoid bone, as well as the width of the nasopharynx and oropharynx after occlusal splint therapy combined with physiotherapy in patients diagnosed with temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Methods: This was a clinical trial study. The study group consisted of 40 patients diagnosed with TMD, who were qualified for the treatment combining physiotherapy and occlusal splint therapy. Hyoid bone position as well as the width of the nasopharynx and oropharynx were assessed in lateral cephalograms taken before and after the end of the treatment. There were 15 generally healthy participants included into the control group, who had taken lateral cephalograms twice within the period of 1 to 2 years and did not receive any occlusal treatment in the meantime. Results: The position of the hyoid bone was significantly lowered and the dimension of the lower part of the oropharynx was significantly decreased after the end of the long-term occlusal splint therapy combined with physiotherapy in patients diagnosed with TMD. Conclusions: Long-term occlusal splint therapy combined with physiotherapy affected the position of the hyoid bone and the dimension of the lower part of the oropharynx.

Repeated Intra-Articular Administration of Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) in Temporomandibular Disorders: A Clinical Case Series

Background: Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs) are manifested, inter alia, by pain and limited scope of the mandibular abduction. Among the treatment strategies for these ailments, intra-articular injections of autologous blood preparations, including platelet-rich plasma (PRP), are administered. This prospective case series was aimed at assessing the effectiveness of repeated platelet-rich plasma (PRP) administration to the TMJ cavities in terms of reducing articular pain and increasing the mobility of the mandible. Material and methods: 40 consecutive patients diagnosed with TMJ pain qualified for the case series. The entire treatment program consisted of five PRP administrations and a summary appointment. Regression was analyzed for (1) intensity of spontaneous pain; (2) effectiveness of spontaneous pain relief; (3) mastication efficiency values; (4) painless mandibular abduction; (5) maximum mouth opening. The correlations between the abovementioned variable series were analyzed. Results: The mean spontaneous pain decreased consistently with successive PRP administrations in line with the regression model: −0.4x + 4.2 (R2 = 0.98). Articular pain improvement was reported in 71% of joints treated. Improvement in chewing quality at the end of the entire injection cycle was found in 63% of patients. The equations for the linear regression models for painless mandibular abduction (five applications of PRP) and maximum mouth opening (the first four applications of PRP) were x + 34 (R2 = 0.89) and 0.6x + 43.6 (R2 = 0.96), respectively. Improvement in these domains was found in 78% and 53% of patients, respectively. The strongest correlations were found between pain and chewing efficiency (−0.95), pain and painless mandible abduction (−0.96), and painless mandibular abduction and mastication efficiency (0.94). Conclusion: PRP injections into TMJ cavities should be considered as a low invasive, highly accessible form of treatment for various TMDs causing pain and mandible movement limitation.
