Butyl Rubber-Based Composite: Thermal Degradation and Prediction of Service Lifetime

Evaluation of Adhesion Characteristics According to Chemical Deterioration Conditions and Recycled Material Content of Butyl Rubber Compound Waterproof Sheet

This study sought to investigate the adhesion strength reduction of reclaimed butyl rubber self-adhesive waterproofing sheets after exposure to a chemical erosion environment. Ranges from 0 to 45% mixture ratio (with changing intervals of 5% ratio) of reclaimed butyl rubber replaced the new rubber content of commercial butyl rubber self-adhesive waterproofing sheets for testing, based on the optimal results for the reclaimed butyl rubber content in order to ensure performance that meets the standard criteria. The research results confirmed that performance degradation was relatively greater when exposed to an acidic environment that was responsible for chemical deterioration. It was also confirmed that, given the deterioration environment described above, the reclaimed butyl rubber content should be limited to 44% so as to ensure an adhesion performance similar to that of the untreated test sample (reclaimed butyl rubber content of 67%). Based on the above results, it was suggested that the optimal mixing range of reclaimed butyl rubber should be up to 44% of the total rubber content, considering performance degradation after field application in the production of self-adhesive waterproofing sheets.

Durability and Service Life Prediction of Fluorocarbon Elastomer under Thermal Environments

This study investigated the service life prediction of fluorocarbon elastomers that are used in automotive vapor fuel hoses under thermal environments. The changes in mechanical properties such as the tensile strength, elongation, compression set (CS), and hardness according to thermal aging were investigated for two types of ternary fluoroelastomers. Destructive tests of the tensile strength and elongation showed large variations in the mechanical properties under the same condition because there is no continuity of samples. In contrast, nondestructive tests of the CS and hardness showed little variations in the mechanical properties under the same condition. The elongation, CS, and hardness were selected as the physical parameters for service life prediction as they showed a tendency according to the aging temperature, which is an accelerating factor. The effective activation energy derived using each physical parameter was 74.91-159.6 kJ mol^-1, and the service life was 17.8-140 × 10³ h based on B₁₀. In this study, hardness, which has a small deviation between samples, is considered appropriate as mechanical parameter for predicting the service lifetime.

Biodegradable Gloves for Waste Management Post-COVID-19 Outbreak: A Shelf-Life Prediction

With increased awareness on the importance of gloves arising from the COVID-19 pandemic, people are expected to continue using them even after the pandemic recedes. This scenario in a way increased the rubber solid waste disposal problem; therefore, the production of biodegradable gloves may be an option to overcome this problem. However, the need to study the shelf life of biodegradable gloves is crucial before commercialization. There are well-established models to address the failure properties of gloves as stated in the American Society for Testing and Material (ASTM) D7160. In this study, polysaccharide-based material-filled natural rubber latex (PFNRL) gloves, which are biodegradable gloves, were subjected to an accelerated aging process at different temperatures of 50-80 °C for 1-120 days. Prediction models based on Arrhenius and shift factors were used to estimate the shelf life of the PFNRL gloves. Based on the results obtained, the estimated time for the PFNRL gloves to retain 75% of their tensile strength at shelf temperature (30 °C) based on Arrhenius and shift factor models was 2.8 years. Verification on the activation energy based on the shift factor model indicated that the shelf life of PFNRL gloves is 2.9 years, which is only a 3.6% difference. The value obtained is aligned with the requirement in accordance with ASTM D7160, which states that only up to a maximum of 3 years' shelf life is allowed for the gloves under accelerated aging conditions.

Kinetic Study of the Thermal and Thermo-Oxidative Degradations of Polystyrene Reinforced with Multiple-Cages POSS

A comprehensive kinetics degradation study is carried out on novel multiple cages polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS)/polystyrene (PS) composites at 5% (w/w) of POSS to assess their thermal behavior with respect to the control PS and other similar POSS/PS systems studied in the past. The composites are synthesized by in situ polymerization of styrene in the presence of POSSs and characterized by 1H-NMR. The characteristics of thermal parameters are determined using kinetics literature methods, such as those developed by Kissinger and Flynn, Wall, and Ozawa (FWO), and discussed and compared with each other and with those obtained in the past for similar POSS/PS composites. A good improvement in the thermal stability with respect to neat polymer is found, but not with respect to those obtained in the past for polystyrene reinforced with single- or double-POSS cages. This behavior is attributed to the greater steric hindrance of the three-cages POSS compared with those of single- or double-cage POSS molecules.

Antibacterial Activity of TiO2- and ZnO-Decorated with Silver Nanoparticles

This work emphasizes the use of the silver decorative method to enhance the antibacterial activity of TiO2 and ZnO nanoparticles. These silver-decorated nanoparticles (hybrid nanoparticles) were synthesized using sodium borohydride as a reducing agent, with the weight ratio of Ag precursors/oxide nanoparticles = 1:30. The morphology and optical properties of these hybrid nanoparticles were investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The agar-well diffusion method was used to evaluate their antibacterial activity against both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacteria, with or without light irradiation. The TEM images indicated clearly that silver nanoparticles (AgNPs, 5–10 nm) were well deposited on the surface of nano-TiO2 particles (30–60 nm). In addition to this, bigger AgNPs (<20 nm) were dispersed on the surface of nano-ZnO particles (30–50 nm). XRD patterns confirmed the presence of AgNPs in both Ag-decorated TiO2 and Ag-decorated ZnO nanoparticles. UV-Vis spectra confirmed that the hybridization of Ag and oxide nanoparticles led to a shift in the absorption edge of oxide nanoparticles to the lower energy region (visible region). The antibacterial tests indicated that both oxide pure nanoparticles did not exhibit inhibitory effects against bacteria, with or without light irradiation. However, the presence of AgNPs in their hybrids, even at low content (<40 mg/mL), leads to a good antibacterial activity, and higher inhibition zones under light irradiation as compared to those in dark were observed.
