Environmental Impacts and Challenges Associated with Oil Spills on Shorelines

Oil Sorption Properties of Centrifugally Spun Polyisobutylene-Based Thermoplastic Elastomer Microfibers

Fiber-based sorbent materials are an essential part of containing oil spills, thus preventing ecological damage. Poly(styrene-b-isobutylene-b-styrene) thermoplastic elastomer fibers were successfully produced by centrifugal spinning. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the fibers were bead free and smooth-surfaced, with an average fiber diameter of 5.9 ± 2.3 μm. Contact angle measurements proved the highly hydrophobic (water contact angle of 126.8 ± 6.4°) and highly oleophilic nature of the fiber mat. The sorption and retention capacities of the fiber mat were tested for various oils and benchmarked against polypropylene as the industry standard and polystyrene, which is widely used in the literature. The oil uptake of the fiber mat showed a strong correlation with the viscosity of the oil, resulting in sorption capacities of 10.1 ± 0.8 g/g for sunflower oil, 19.9 ± 2.1 g/g for motor oil, and 23.8 ± 1.8 g/g for gear oil. Oil-water separation tests were also conducted, resulting in ~100% oil removal. The thermoplastic elastomer fiber mat outperformed the industry standard; however, the polystyrene fiber mat demonstrated the best oil sorption performance.

Mapping the shoreline risk assessment of oil spill in the eastern region of Qeshm channel

The northern shores of the Strait of Hormuz constitute one of the most diverse shorelines in the Persian Gulf, characterized by both utility and environmental richness. Situated in the Qeshm channel, which hosts the largest mangrove habitat, major industries, and commercial port, these shores are subject to the occurrence of oil spills, posing potential substantial harm. This study employs General NOAA Operational Modeling Environment (GNOME) and numerical modeling to assess the potential risks to shorelines from hypothetical oil spills, considering the distinctive features of the shores and their environmental sensitivity. The results indicate that high-risk levels are not excessively prevalent overall and are confined to approximately 24 km. The shape of the channel and hydrodynamic conditions highlight the eastern sector of the Bandar Abbas urban area as particularly susceptible to oil spill entrapment. The findings indicate that high-risk areas are predominantly located away from industrial-oil shores and primarily consist of muddy shores. Therefore, internal strategies of Oil Spill Contingency Plan (OSCP) of companies are deemed insufficient and necessitate comprehensive planning initiatives.

A review of the prospects, efficacy and sustainability of nanotechnology-based approaches for oil spill remediation

Numerous marine oil spill incidents and their environmental catastrophe have raised the concern of the research community and environmental agencies on the topic of the offshore crude oil spill. The oil transport through oil tankers and pipelines has further aggravated the risk of the oil spill. This has led to the necessity to develop an effective, environment-friendly, versatile oil spill clean-up strategy. The current review article analyses various nanotechnology-based methods for marine oil spill clean-up, focusing on their recovery rate, reusability and cost. The authors weighed the three primary factors recovery, reusability and cost distinctively for the analysis based on their significance in various contexts. The findings and analysis suggest that magnetic nanomaterials and nano-sorbent have been the most effective nanotechnology-based marine oil spill remediation techniques, with the magnetic paper based on ultralong hydroxyapatite nanowires standing out with a recovery rate of over 99%. The chitosan-silica hybrid nano-sorbent and multi-wall carbon nanotubes are also promising options with high recovery rates of up to 95-98% and the ability to be reused multiple times. Although the photocatalytic biodegradation approach and the nano-dispersion method do not offer benefits for recovery or reusability, they can nevertheless help lessen the negative ecological effects of marine oil spills. Therefore, careful evaluation and selection of the most appropriate method for each marine oil spill situation is crucial. The current review article provides valuable insights into the current state of nanotechnology-based marine oil spill clean-up methods and their potential applications.

Effects of expanded graphite's structural and elemental characteristics on its oil and heavy metal sorption properties

Expanded graphite has promising potential environmental applications due to its porous structure and oleophilic nature, which allow it to absorb large quantities of oil. The material is produced by intercalating graphite and applying heat to convert the intercalant into gas to cause expansion between the layers in the graphite. Using different intercalants and temperature conditions results in varying properties of expanded graphite. This work has proven that the sorption properties of commercial expanded graphite differ significantly due to the material's structural and elemental characteristics, which can be attributed to the intercalation method. This resulted in various degrees of exfoliation of the graphite and possible functionalisation of the graphene sheets within the structure. This affected the material's sorption capacity and its affinity for heavy metal sorption by incorporating selectivity towards the sorption of certain metals. It was found that sample EG3, which underwent a less harsh expansion, exhibited lower porosity than EG1, and thus, the sample absorbed less oil at 37.29 g/g compared to the more expanded samples EG1 and EG2 with 55.16 g/g and 48.82 g/g, respectively. However, it was able to entrap a wider variety of metal particles compared to EG1 and EG2, possibly due to its smaller cavities allowing for a capillary effect between the graphene sheets and greater Van der Waals forces. A second possibility is that ionic or coordination complexes could form with certain metals due to the possible functionalisation of the expanded graphite during the intercalation process. This would be in addition to coordination between the metals and expanded graphite carbon atoms. The findings suggest that there is evidence of functionalisation as determined by XRD and elemental analyses. However, further investigation is necessary to confirm this hypothesis. The findings in this work suggest that the first mechanism of sorption was more likely to be related to the degree of expansion of the expanded graphite. Various metals are present in used oil, and their removal can be challenging. Some metals in oil are not considered heavy since they have a relatively low density but can be associated with heavy metals in terms of toxicity.

Intelligent Devices Harnessing Underwater Superoleophobic and Underoil Superhydrophobic Quartz Sands for the Separation of Diverse Stratified and Emulsified Water-Oil Mixtures

To achieve the green, sustainable, and controllable recovery of oil-water resources and to address the limited functionality of single superwet materials in oil-water separation, this study reports a multifunctional oil-water separation strategy by compositing the underwater superoleophobic and underoil superhydrophobic materials (HS). The underwater superoleophobic quartz sands with an oil contact angle of 152.68° were prepared by adjusting the particle size. This material demonstrated a water flux of 4688 L m-2 h-1 and a low-density oil and water mixture separation efficiency of 98.6%, which remained above 97.9% over 50 cycles. It was effective in separating oil-in-water emulsions with a separation efficiency of >99%. For HS, quartz sands were modified with dodecyltrimethoxysilane. The optimized HS-4 exhibited superhydrophobic properties with a water contact angle of 157.06°. It achieved an oil flux of 5775 L m-2 h-1 and a water and dichloromethane mixture separation efficiency of 98.4%. Additionally, they exhibited significant potential in the separation of water-in-oil emulsions. Furthermore, by placing the underwater superoleophobic and underoil superhydrophobic units at the bottom of the filter, we achieved cyclic separation of high-density oil and water mixtures, low-density oil and water mixtures, water-in-oil emulsions, and oil-in-water emulsions. The separation efficiency consistently exceeded 96.5% over 10 cycles. In addition, the oil-water separation mechanism of underwater oleophobic and underoil hydrophobic materials was demonstrated by the relative concentration distribution of water and oil with molecular dynamics simulations. This intelligent oil-water separation method marks a significant advancement in the sustainable separation of diverse oil-water mixtures.

Spotlight on the vertical migration of aged microplastics in coastal waters

Coastal waters are complex and dynamic areas with unique environmental attributes that complicate the vertical migration of microplastics (MPs). The MPs that enter coastal waters from diverse sources, including terrestrial, riverine, oceanic, and shoreline inputs undergo various aging pathways. In this study, the variations in the physiochemical characteristics of MPs undergoing various aging pathways and their vertical migration under dynamic conditions subjected to the effects of different MP characteristics and coastal environmental features were comprehensively explored. Opposite effects of aging on the vertical migration of hydrophobic and hydrophilic MPs were observed, with aging appearing to promote the dispersion of hydrophobic MPs but enhance the vertical migration of hydrophilic ones. The positive role of salinity and the negative role of humic acid (HA) concentrations on MP vertical migration were identified, and the mechanisms driving these effects were analyzed. Notably, intense turbulence not only promoted the floating of positively buoyant MPs but also reversed the migration direction of negatively buoyant MPs from downward to upward. Aging-induced changes in MP characteristics had a limited effect on MP vertical migration. The inherent characteristics of MPs and the surrounding environmental features, however, played major roles in their vertical migration dynamics. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: Microplastics (MPs) have emerged as a significant global environmental concern and the coastal zones are the hotspots for MP pollution due to their high population density. This study comprehensively investigated the variations in the physiochemical characteristics of MPs undergoing various aging pathways. Their vertical migration patterns under dynamic conditions subjected to the effects of different MP characteristics and coastal environmental features were revealed. The roles of turbulence and MP density in their migration were identified. The findings of this study have important implications for understanding the transport and determining the ecological risks of MPs in coastal waters.

Evaluating the productivity and bioremediation potential of two tropical marine algae in petroleum hydrocarbon polluted tropical marine water

Bioremediation using tropical marine algae provides cost effective and eco-friendly alternative mean of removing toxic and harmful substances from the environment. Bioremediation is an important tool in sustainable environmental management and protection. This study examined the productivity and bioremediation potential of Nannochloropsis oculata and Porphyridium cruentum in Water Soluble Fraction (WSF) of petroleum fuels by investigating the growth of Nannochloropsis oculata and Porphyridium cruentum at 0%, 10% 20% 30% 40% 50% 75% 100% of WSF of kerosene, diesel, and gasoline. Growth was monitored optically every two days for fourteen days using 721 Visible Spectrophotometer. Productivity was measured using prescribed procedure. Bioremediation potential of test algae were examined using standard method for the GC analysis of diesel range organics in 100% WSFs. The minimum growth for both species was recorded at 100% in all the fuels. The maximum growth of Porphyridium cruentum was obtained at 10% in all fuels, while the maximum growth of Nannochloropsis oculata was obtained at 30% in both kerosene and gasoline and at 50% in diesel. Whereas Porphyridium cruentum was greatly inhibited by all fuels, Nannochloropsis oculata was stimulated at lower concentration of the fuels. Nannochloropsis oculata proved more efficient for bioremediation of the petroleum fuels with 84.58%, 65.51% and 70.77% removal efficiency for kerosene, diesel and gasoline respectively, while Porphyridium cruentum was 58.94%, 46.64% and 56.67% respectively. Nannochloropsis oculata is a very strong and reliable candidate for bioremediation of petroleum hydrocarbons and should be subjected to further examination for sustainable and eco-friendly remediation of petroleum pollution.

Bioremediation of oily hypersaline soil via autochthonous bioaugmentation with halophilic bacteria and archaea

Kuwaiti hypersaline soil samples were contaminated with 5 % (w/w) weathered Kuwaiti light crude oil and bioaugmented with autochthonous halophilic hydrocarbonoclastic archaeal and bacterial strains, two each, individually and as consortia. Residual oil contents were determined, and microbial communities were analyzed by culture-dependent and culture-independent approaches initially and seasonally for one year. After one year of the bioremediation process, the mean oil degradation rate was similar across all treated soils including the controlled unbioaugmented one. Oil hydrocarbons were drastically reduced in all soil samples with values ranging from 82.7 % to 93 %. During the bioremediation process, the number of culturable oil-degrading bacteria increased to a range of 142 to 344 CFUx104 g-1 after 12 months of bioaugmentation. Although culture-independent analysis showed a high proportion of inoculants initially, none could be cultured throughout the bioremediation procedure. Within a year, microbial communities changed continually, and 33 species of halotolerant/halophilic hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria were isolated and identified belonged mainly to the three major bacterial phyla Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, and Firmicutes. The archaeal phylum Halobacterota represented <1 % of the microbial community's relative abundance, which explains why none of its members were cultured. Improving the biodegradability of an already balanced environment by autochthonous bioaugmentation is more involved than just adding the proper oil degraders. This study emphasizes the possibility of a relatively large resistant population, a greater diversity of oil-degrading microorganisms, and the highly selective impacts of oil contamination on hypersaline soil bacterial communities.

Patterns and spatial distribution of sea turtle strandings in Alagoas, Brazil

This study makes a descriptive analysis of necropsied sea turtles registered in the Biota Conservation Institute database between May 2018 and May 2022 on the coast of Alagoas, Brazil. During this period, 79 animals of four species were necropsied: 87.4 % (69) Chelonia mydas, 6.3 % (5) Caretta caretta, 3.8 % (3) Lepidochelys olivacea and 2.5 % (2) Eretmochelys imbricata. C. mydas was the most frequent species, mainly juvenile females. In 29.1 % (23/79) evidence of anthropogenic interactions was found (e.g., fishing net marks, plastic waste in the digestive tract, trauma from collisions with boats). Cutaneous tumors suggestive of fibropapillomatosis in 35.4 % (28/79), in C. mydas and E. imbricata, half were in an area of high eutrophication, close to the capital. Endoparasites were found in 46.8 % (37/79) individuals. Information on strandings in the region is essential for understanding the use of the area and the impacts to which these animals are exposed.

Prolonged drying impedes the detachment of microplastics in unsaturated substrate: Role of flow regimes

The detachment of microplastics (MPs) from porous media under different moisture conditions and flow regimes has garnered limited attention within the research community. The present study investigates the detachment of MPs from porous media under wet and dry conditions combined with steady and transient flow. For both the wet and dry conditions, the increase in flow rates is found to decrease the detachment of hydrophobic polyethylene of two sizes and of hydrophilic polymethylmethacrylate. Intermittent flow is found to result in effluent peaks and a higher rate of MP detachment compared to steady flow. The ionic strength of inflow drops in a stepwise manner, leading to abrupt peaks followed by a tail corresponding to the arrival of each ionic strength front. Each step increase in flow rate leads to a steep peak followed by slow release over several pore volumes. Although transient flow facilitates the detachment of MPs, drying significantly impedes the detachment of MPs irrespective of flow regime. Ultraviolet weathering of MPs for 60 days weakens the inhibition effect of drying on hydrophilic polymethylmethacrylate, facilitating their detachment. Furthermore, the release of MPs decreases markedly with an increase in air-drying duration from 0 h to 72 h. Hydrus-1D two-site kinetic models are used to successfully simulate time-dependent processes, implying that drying heightens the energy barrier for MPs to detach. Our analysis confirms the significance of moisture in determining the remobilization of MPs, providing valuable insights concerning the fate of MPs in unsaturated substrate under prolonged drought conditions.

Mineral oil emulsion species and concentration prediction using multi-output neural network based on fluorescence spectra in the solar-blind UV band

The accurate monitoring of oil spills is crucial for effective oil spill recovery, volume determination, and cleanup. Oil slicks become emulsified under the effects of wind and waves, which increases the consistency of the oil spills. This phenomenon makes oil spills more challenging to handle and exacerbates environmental pollution. In this study, the variation of the solar-blind ultraviolet (UV) fluorescence spectra obtained from simulated oil spills with different oil types and oil-water ratios was investigated. By designing and constructing a multi-angle excitation and detection system, an apparent fluorescence peak of the oil emulsions was observed at around 290 nm under 220 nm excitation. By utilizing competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS) and multi-output neural network algorithms, both the types and concentrations of the emulsified oils were obtained simultaneously. The classification accuracy for identifying the oil type exceeds 98%, and the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) for concentration regression is around 2%. The results indicate that active solar-blind UV fluorescence could become a supplementary method for on-site oil spill detection to achieve comprehensive monitoring of oil spills. This study provides potential applications for UV-induced fluorescence spectrometry in oil spill on-site monitoring during the daytime.

PAH residues and toxicity levels two years after an extensive oil spill on the northeast Brazilian coast

The most extensive oil spill ever recorded in tropical oceans occurred between August 2019 and March 2020, affecting approximately 3000 km of the Brazilian coast. This study assessed the chemical contamination and toxicity of sediments collected from affected reef areas during two sampling surveys conducted 17 and 24 months after the peak of oil slick inputs. Our results indicated that neither PAH levels nor measured toxicity showed a significant contribution from the spilled oil, with concentrations and biological effects indistinguishable from those in unaffected areas. Similarly, no differences were observed between seasons. Furthermore, there was no discernible relationship between sediment toxicity results and the measured PAH concentrations. Therefore, while biological responses indicated toxicity in most assessed areas, these responses are likely related to other local sources. This evidence suggests a natural oil attenuation process contributing to local environmental recovery. Nonetheless, further investigation is needed for other areas affected by oil spills.

Use of remote sensing to assess vegetative stress as a proxy for soil contamination

We report, for the first time, a multimodal investigation of current crude oil reprocessing and storage sites to assess their impact on the environment after 50 years of continuous operation. We have adopted a dual approach to investigate potential soil contamination. The first approach uses conventional analytical techniques i.e. energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF) for metal analysis, and a complementary metabolomic investigation using hydrophilic liquid interaction chromatography hi-resolution mass spectrometry (HILIC-MS) for organic contaminants. Secondly, the deployment of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with a multispectral image (MSI) camera, for the remote sensing of vegetation stress, as a proxy for sub-surface soil contamination. The results identified high concentrations of barium (mean 21 017 ± 5950 μg g-1, n = 36) as well as metabolites derived from crude oil (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons), cleaning processes (surfactants) and other organic pollutants (e.g. pesticides, plasticizers and pharmaceuticals) in the reprocessing site. This data has then been correlated, with post-flight data analysis derived vegetation indices (NDVI, GNDVI, SAVI and Cl green VI), to assess the potential to identify soil contamination because of vegetation stress. It was found that strong correlations exist (an average R2 of >0.68) between the level of soil contamination and the ground cover vegetation. The potential to deploy aerial remote sensing techniques to provide an initial survey, to inform decision-making, on suspected contaminated land sites can have global implications.

Ecotoxicity of commonly used oilfield-based emulsifiers on Guinean Tilapia (Tilapia guineensis) using histopathology and behavioral alterations as protocol

This study examined the histological aberrations in the gill and liver tissues and behavioural changes of Tilapia guineensis fingerlings exposed to lethal concentrations of used Oilfield-based emulsifiers for 96 h. Various concentrations of the surfactants were tested, ranging from 0.0 to 15.0 ml/L. The behaviour of the fish was observed throughout the experiment, and the results showed that increasing concentrations of the surfactants led to progressively abnormal behaviour, including hyperventilation and altered opercular beat frequency. These behavioural changes indicated respiratory distress and neurotoxic effects. Histological analysis revealed structural aberrations in the gill and liver tissues, with higher concentrations causing more severe damage, such as lesions, necrosis, inflammation, and cellular degeneration. This implies that surfactants released even at low concentrations are capable of inducing changes in the tissues of aquatic organisms. These findings highlight the toxic effects of the surfactants on fish health and provide biomarkers of toxicity. Future research should focus on understanding the specific mechanisms and long-term consequences of surfactant toxicity on fish genetic composition, populations, and ecosystems to implement effective conservation measures.

The role of marine pollution on the emergence of fish bacterial diseases

Marine pollution and bacterial disease outbreaks are two closely related dilemmas that impact marine fish production from fisheries and mariculture. Oil, heavy metals, agrochemicals, sewage, medical wastes, plastics, algal blooms, atmospheric pollutants, mariculture-related pollutants, as well as thermal and noise pollution are the most threatening marine pollutants. The release of these pollutants into the marine aquatic environment leads to significant ecological degradation and a range of non-infectious disorders in fish. Marine pollutants trigger numerous fish bacterial diseases by increasing microbial multiplication in the aquatic environment and suppressing fish immune defense mechanisms. The greater part of these microorganisms is naturally occurring in the aquatic environment. Most disease outbreaks are caused by opportunistic bacterial agents that attack stressed fish. Some infections are more serious and occur in the absence of environmental stressors. Gram-negative bacteria are the most frequent causes of these epizootics, while gram-positive bacterial agents rank second on the critical pathogens list. Vibrio spp., Photobacterium damselae subsp. Piscicida, Tenacibaculum maritimum, Edwardsiella spp., Streptococcus spp., Renibacterium salmoninarum, Pseudomonas spp., Aeromonas spp., and Mycobacterium spp. Are the most dangerous pathogens that attack fish in polluted marine aquatic environments. Effective management strategies and stringent regulations are required to prevent or mitigate the impacts of marine pollutants on aquatic animal health. This review will increase stakeholder awareness about marine pollutants and their impacts on aquatic animal health. It will support competent authorities in developing effective management strategies to mitigate marine pollution, promote the sustainability of commercial marine fisheries, and protect aquatic animal health.

Eliminating waste with waste: transforming spent coffee grounds into microrobots for water treatment

Water pollutants such as oil spills, industrial dyes, and microplastics threaten public health and aquatic ecosystems. There are considerable challenges in removing water contaminants using traditional methods. Several studies have been conducted in recent years to develop effective water purification materials. Despite this, the mass production of most materials is extremely challenging because they involve multiple intricate steps and sophisticated equipment. Herein, we report the facile synthesis of spent coffee ground (SCG)-derived magnetic microrobots, which we dub "CoffeeBots", to remove oil, organic dyes, and microplastic pollution from contaminated seawater. In order to meet eco-friendly, high-yield and low-cost requirements, iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) were deposited on biodegradable SCGs using green chemistry. The IONPs on CoffeeBots facilitate magnetic navigation and recycling, microswarm assembly, and ease of retrieval after water remediation tasks. CoffeeBots' intrinsic surface hydrophobicity enables efficient on-the-fly capture and removal of oil droplets and microplastics from contaminated water with remote magnetic guidance. CoffeeBots were also functionalized with ascorbic acid (AA@CoffeeBots) to remove methylene blue (MB) dye contaminants from polluted seawater. SCGs and AA act as bioadsorbent and reducing agent, respectively, for MB dye removal whereas magnetic propulsion enhances mixing and accelerates MB decolorization. These CoffeeBots can be recycled numerous times for removing oil spills, organic dyes, and microplastics from the seawater. CoffeeBots hold considerable potential as sustainable, recyclable, and low-cost remediation agents for water treatment in the near future.

First report on the detection of microplastics from the feathers of black-tailed gulls in South Korea

In this study, microplastics, including polyethylene (PE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS), adhering to the feathers of all tracked black-tailed gull individuals were studied. PE was detected in the highest number of feathers (n = 26, 35.6 %), followed by PP (n = 21, 28.8 %), PET and other microplastics (n = 16, 21.9 %), and PS (n = 10, 13.7 %). Furthermore, plastic particles of size 50-100 μm were the most common (n = 33, 45.1 %), followed by ≤50 (n = 21, 28.8 %), 100-150 (n = 11, 15.1 %), ≥200 (n = 7, 9.6 %), and 150-200 μm (n = 1, 1.4 %). Microplastic levels did not differ considerably between the Dokdo and Ulleungdo populations. As black-tailed gulls spend >95 % of their time in coastal areas, coastal pollution caused by oil spills and increasing microplastic levels could lead to physical problems, such as the adherence of oil and microplastics onto feathers.

An ocean-wave-trajectory forecasting system for the eastern Baltic Sea: Validation against drifting buoys and implementation for oil spill modeling

We present the implementation and validation of OpenDrift, an open-source Lagrangian particle trajectory modeling framework for oil spill modeling in the coastal waters of Estonia in the Baltic Sea. The framework was coupled with ECMWF winds, NEMO-EST05 hydrodynamical model, and SWAN-EST wave model, and validated using six drift experiments from 2022. The sensitivity analysis revealed the importance of incorporating additional forcing factors, such as Stokes drift and currents, which generally improved the accuracy of the trajectory model compared to using wind alone. Nevertheless, the benefits of providing OpenDrift with, for example, the Stokes drift seemed to depend on whether currents are also included or not. The wind drift factors of the utilized drifters align closely with those commonly employed in oil spill modeling. Furthermore, the modeling results for hypothetical oil spills in severe weather conditions and high-risk regions emphasize the critical need for preparedness and rapid response strategies.

Applications of bubble curtains in marine oil spill containment: Hydrodynamic characteristics, applications, and future perspectives

Although the marine oil spill pollution issue does not bring us to flock in droves as the new emerging oceanic techniques like wave energy converters, remote operated vehicle (ROV), blue ammonia and green hydrogen, the huge pollution risks of the marine oil spills caused by man-made intentional discharge, old equipment, accidental leakage, war and other aspects should arouse our sufficient attention and concern. As the primary countermeasure of emergency response to a marine oil spill, rapid & efficient oil containment is crucial to limit the pollution scope and the subsequent recovery and treatment. Here, we summarized the existing investigations on oil-spill containment with a marked emphasis on the applications of bubble curtains and their working mechanisms. The critical research progress and trends about the remediation techniques and the application of bubble curtains in marine environments were briefly introduced. The article thoroughly analyzed the basic working mechanism of the bubble curtains in oil spill containment, the technical difficulties of the existing methods, the potential application prospects of coupling with the traditional oil containment booms and the critical scientific problems to be studied in the future. Regarding the issues involving insufficient oil retention performance and inconvenient deployment of the existing traditional oil boom under complex and variable sea conditions, the performance and structural optimization of bubble curtain enhanced oil containment boom will get the top priority in developing the next-generation oil containment techniques.

Optimization of Oil Sorbent Thermoplastic Elastomer Microfiber Production by Centrifugal Spinning

Fibrous structures are promising candidates for oil-water separation applications. In this study, we have produced poly(styrene-b-isobutylene-b-styrene) thermoplastic elastomeric fibers with the centrifugal spinning fiber production method. The optimal fiber production conditions were achieved when using a 25% w/w solution concentration in an 80/20 tetrahydrofuran/toluene (w/w) solvent system at 8000 rpm rotational speed. The produced fibers were bead-free and smooth-surfaced with a diameter of 3.68 µm. The produced fibers were highly hydrophobic and oleophilic, suggested by a water contact angle of 129° and the instantaneous absorption of the oil droplet. The oil absorption study showed fast absorption kinetics with 94% relative oil uptake after 1 min and a maximum of 16.5 g sunflower oil/g fiber. The results suggest that polyisobutylene-based thermoplastic elastomers could be promising alternatives in oil absorption applications.

Preparation, characteristics, and performance of the microemulsion system in the removal of oil from beach sand

Oil deposited on shoreline substrates has serious adverse effects on the coastal environment and can persist for a long time. In this study, a green and effective microemulsion (ME) derived from vegetable oil was developed as a washing fluid to remove stranded oil from beach sand. The pseudo-ternary phase diagrams of the castor oil/water (without or without NaCl)/Triton X-100/ethanol were constructed to determine ME regions, and they also demonstrated that the phase behaviors of ME systems were almost independent of salinity. ME-A and ME-B exhibited high oil removal performance, low surfactant residues, and economic benefits, which were determined to be the W/O microstructure. Under optimal operation conditions, the oil removal efficiencies for both ME systems were 84.3 % and 86.8 %, respectively. Moreover, the reusability evaluation showed that the ME system still had over 70 % oil removal rates, even though it was used six times, implying its sustainability and reliability.

Petroleum-Degrading Fungal Isolates for the Treatment of Soil Microcosms

The main purpose of this study was to degrade total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) from contaminated soil in batch microcosm reactors. Native soil fungi isolated from the same petroleum-polluted soil and ligninolytic fungal strains were screened and applied in the treatment of soil-contaminated microcosms in aerobic conditions. The bioaugmentation processes were carried out using selected hydrocarbonoclastic fungal strains in mono or co-cultures. Results demonstrated the petroleum-degrading potential of six fungal isolates, namely KBR1 and KBR8 (indigenous) and KBR1-1, KB4, KB2 and LB3 (exogenous). Based on the molecular and phylogenetic analysis, KBR1 and KB8 were identified as Aspergillus niger [MW699896] and tubingensis [MW699895], while KBR1-1, KB4, KB2 and LB3 were affiliated with the genera Syncephalastrum sp. [MZ817958], Paecilomyces formosus [MW699897], Fusarium chlamydosporum [MZ817957] and Coniochaeta sp. [MW699893], respectively. The highest rate of TPH degradation was recorded in soil microcosm treatments (SMT) after 60 days by inoculation with Paecilomyces formosus 97 ± 2.54%, followed by bioaugmentation with the native strain Aspergillus niger (92 ± 1.83%) and then by the fungal consortium (84 ± 2.21%). The statistical analysis of the results showed significant differences.

The Role of Bacteria in the Formation and Migration of Oil-Particle Aggregates (OPAs) after Marine Oil Spills and the Associated Mechanism

Oil spills interact with mineral particles to form oil-particle aggregates (OPAs), which promotes the oil's natural diffusion and biodegradation. We investigated the effect of bacteria on the formation and vertical migration of OPAs under different concentrations and types of particles and proposed and elucidated an oil-particle-bacteria coupling mechanism. The depth of particle penetration into oil droplets (13-17 μm) was more than twice that of the nonbacterial group. Oil that remained in the water column and deposited to the bottom decreased from 87% to 49% and increased from 14% to 15% at high/low concentration, respectively. Interestingly, the median droplet diameter showed a negative correlation (R² = 0.83) and positive correlation (R² = 0.60) at high/low concentration, respectively, with the relative penetration depth first proposed. We further demonstrated that bacteria increased the penetrating depth by a combination of reducing/increasing the interfacial tension, reducing the oil amount (C₁₇-C₃₈) in the OPAs, and increasing the particle width. These effects reduced the droplet size and ultimately changed the vertical migration of OPAs. Finally, we provided a simple assessment of the vertical distribution of OPAs in nearshore environments based on experimental data and suggested that the role of bacteria in increasing the depth of particles penetrating into the oil droplets should not be ignored. These findings will broaden the research perspective of marine oil spill migration.

Tar ball pollution under the influence of ocean circulation in the Bohai Sea, China

The deposition of tar balls of unknown sources on the coast poses a great threat to the fishery, tourism and coastal biodiversity in the Bohai Sea. This work aimed to identify the sources of tar balls by using oil fingerprint technique. Tar ball samples were collected from the seashore of two islands of the western Bohai Sea and divided into two groups (Group I and Group II). Principal component analysis showed that although Caofeidian oilfield was one of the closest oilfields to the sampling area it was not a source. Fingerprints of characteristic hopanes and steranes showed that samples of Group I were similar to the crude oils from the nearby Jidong oilfield, and samples of Group II were similar to the Penglai-19-3 crude oils. Combined with cross-plots of the samples and the reference oils, it indicated that Group I may come from Jidong and Group II may come from Penglai-19-3. The weathering characteristics of alkanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons showed that the samples were affected by natural weathering processes (e.g., evaporation, photooxidation and biodegradation). It revealed that oil pollution from the nearby oilfields can also affect other areas under the influence of ocean circulation. It is the first study on source identification of tar balls from the Bohai Sea and the effects of ocean circulation on the tar ball transport. This study can considerably help to further understand the evolution of tar balls and consequently determine their sources.

Optical discrimination of emulsified oil in optically complex estuarine waters

Coastal estuaries, characterized by highly varying waters with complex optical properties, pose challenges for effective oil discrimination via optical remote sensing. In this study, an object-based spectra comparison (OBSC) approach was proposed to extract emulsified oil slicks from Balikpapan Bay, Indonesia, using optical imagery from Sentinel-2 Multispectral Instrument (MSI) and PlanetScope. The OBSC approach utilizes the spectral signatures of oil emulsion to develop emulsified oil index and normalized emulsified oil index to identify potentially emulsified oil objects from MSI and PlanetScope, respectively. Reflectance spectra of the potential objects were compared with those from dynamically-selected nearby waters to rule out false-positive detections, accounting for the varying water optical properties in the estuary. This OBSC approach performed well in extracting emulsified oil slicks from optical images. Moreover, multiple sensor capabilities for oil detection were compared, and requirements for detection and discrimination of oil spills in the coastal estuary environment were further discussed.

Novel Magnetically Driven Superhydrophobic Sponges Coated with Asphaltene/Kaolin Nanoparticles for Effective Oil Spill Cleanup

Fast and effective cleanup of oil spills remains a global challenge. A modified commercial sponge with superhydrophobicity, strong absorption capacity, outstanding magnetic response, and fire resistance were fabricated by a facile and inexpensive route of dip-coated melamine sponge carbonization. The low-cost petroleum asphaltene and kaolin nanoparticles were used as the dip-coating reagent. High absorption capacity of the fabricated sponges allowed rapid and continuous removal of oil contaminants. Taking advantage of the good refractory property, the sponges can be used in burning conditions and directly reused after burning out of the absorbed oil. Reusability tests showed that the modified sponges still maintained high absorption capacity (>85%) after six regeneration and reuse cycles. These characteristics make the fabricated sponge a promising aid to promote effective in situ burning cleanup of oil spills, contributing as a magnetic oil collector and a fire-resistant flexible boom. An example usage scenario of the sponges applied to in situ burning cleanup of oil spills is described.
