Abstract
Microbial dysbiosis is hypothesized to cause larval mass mortalities in New Caledonian shrimp hatcheries. In order to confirm this hypothesis and allow further microbial comparisons, we studied the active prokaryotic communities of healthy Penaeus stylirostris larvae and their surrounding environment during the first 10 days of larval rearing. Using daily nutrient concentration quantitative analyses and spectrophotometric organic matter analyses, we highlighted a global eutrophication of the rearing environment. We also evidenced drastic bacterial community modifications in the water and the larvae samples using Illumina HiSeq sequencing of the V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene. We confirmed that Alteromonadales, Rhodobacterales, Flavobacteriales, Oceanospirillales, and Vibrionales members formed the core bacteriota of shrimp larvae. We also identified, in the water and the larvae samples, several potential probiotic bacterial strains that could lead to rethink probiotic use in aquaculture (AEGEAN 169 marine group, OM27 clade, Ruegeria, Leisingera, Pseudoalteromonas, and Roseobacter). Finally, investigating the existing correlations between the environmental factors and the major bacterial taxa of the water and the larvae samples, we suggested that deterministic and stochastic processes were involved in the assembly of prokaryotic communities during the larval rearing of P. stylirostris. Overall, our results showed that drastic changes mostly occurred during the zoea stages suggesting that this larval phase is crucial during shrimp larval development.

Abstract
The physiological and genotypic characteristics of Mangrovibacter (MGB) remain largely unexplored, including their distribution and abundance within ecosystems. M. phragmitis (MPH) ASIOC01 was successfully isolated from activated sludge (AS), which was pre-enriched by adding 1,3-dichloro-2-propanol and 3-chloro-1,2-propanediol as carbon sources. The new isolate, MPH ASIOC01, exhibited resilience in a medium containing sodium chloride concentration up to 11% (with optimal growth observed at 3%) and effectively utilizing glycerol as their sole carbon source. However, species delimitation of MGBs remains challenging due to high 16S rRNA sequence similarity (greater than 99% ANI) among different MGBs. In contrast, among the housekeeping gene discrepancies, the tryptophan synthase beta chain gene can serve as a robust marker for fast species delimitation among MGBs. Furthermore, the complete genome of MPH ASIOC01 was fully sequenced and circlized as a single contig using the PacBio HiFi sequencing method. Comparative genomics revealed genes potentially associated with various phenotypic features of MGBs, such as nitrogen-fixing, phosphate-solubilizing, cellulose-digesting, Cr-reducing, and salt tolerance. Computational analysis suggested that MPH ASIOC01 may have undergone horizontal gene transfer events, possibly contributing unique traits such as antibiotic resistance. Finally, our findings also disclosed that the introduction of MPH ASIOC01 into AS can assist in the remediation of wastewater chemical oxygen demand, which was evaluated using gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry. To the best of our knowledge, this study offers the most comprehensive understanding of the phenotypic and genotypic features of MGBs to date.

Abstract
Despite increased attention to the aquaculture environment, there is still a lack of understanding regarding the significance of water quality. To address this knowledge gap, this study utilized high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA and 18S rRNA to examine microbial communities (bacteria and eukaryotes) in coastal water over different months through long-term observations. The goal was to explore interaction patterns in the microbial community and identify potential pathogenic bacteria and red tide organisms. The results revealed significant differences in composition, diversity, and richness of bacterial and eukaryotic operational taxonomic units (OTUs) across various months. Principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) demonstrated distinct temporal variations in bacterial and eukaryotic communities, with significant differences (P = 0.001) among four groups: F (January-April), M (May), S (June-September), and T (October-December). Moreover, a strong association was observed between microbial communities and months, with most OTUs showing a distinct temporal preference. The Kruskal-Wallis test (P < 0.05) indicated significant differences in dominant bacterial and eukaryotic taxa among months, with each group exhibiting unique dominant taxa, including potential pathogenic bacteria and red tide organisms. These findings emphasize the importance of monitoring changes in potentially harmful microorganisms in aquaculture. Network analysis highlighted positive correlations between bacteria and eukaryotes, with bacteria playing a key role in network interactions. The key bacterial genera associated with other microorganisms varied significantly (P < 0.05) across different groups. In summary, this study deepens the understanding of aquaculture water quality and offers valuable insights for maintaining healthy aquaculture practices. Abstract
In recent years, excessive discharge of pollutants has led to increasing concentrations of cadmium (Cd) and diclofenac (DCF) in water; however, the toxicity mechanism of combined exposure of the two pollutants to aquatic animals has not been fully studied. Procambarus clarkii is an economically important aquatic species that is easily affected by Cd and DCF. This study examined the effects of combined exposure to Cd and DCF on the tissue accumulation, physiology, biochemistry, and gut microflora of P. clarkii. The results showed that Cd and DCF accumulated in tissues in the order of hepatopancreas > gill > intestine > muscle. The hepatopancreas and intestines were subjected to severe oxidative stress, with significantly increased antioxidant enzyme activity. Pathological examination revealed lumen expansion and epithelial vacuolisation in the hepatopancreas and damage to the villous capillaries and wall in the intestine. The co-exposure to Cadmium (Cd) and Diclofenac (DCF) disrupts the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes (F/B) ratio, impairing the regular functioning of intestinal microbiota in carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycling. This disturbance consequently hinders the absorption and utilization of energy and nutrients in Procambarus clarkii. This study offers critical insights into the toxicological mechanisms underlying the combined effects of Cd and DCF, and suggests potential approaches to alleviate their adverse impacts on aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract
Aquatic wildlife health assessment is critically important for aquatic wildlife conservation. However, the health assessment of aquatic wildlife (especially aquatic wild animals) is difficult and often accompanied by invasive survey activities and delayed observability. As there is growing evidence that aquatic environmental microbiota could impact the health status of aquatic animals by influencing their symbiotic microbiota, we propose a non-invasive method to monitor the health status of wild aquatic animals using the environmental microbiota health index (microHI). However, it is unknown whether this method is effective for different ecotype groups of aquatic wild animals. To answer this question, we took a case study in the middle Yangtze River and studied the water environmental microbiota and fish gut microbiota at the fish community level, population level, and ecotype level. The results showed that the gut microHI of the healthy group was higher than that of the unhealthy group at the community and population levels, and the overall gut microHI was positively correlated with the water environmental microHI, whereas the baseline gut microHI was species-specific. Integrating these variations in four ecotype groups (filter-feeding, scraper-feeding, omnivorous, and carnivorous), only the gut microHI of the carnivorous group positively correlated with water environmental microHI. Alcaligenaceae, Enterobacteriaceae, and Achromobacter were the most abundant groups with health-negative-impacting phenotypes, had high positive correlations between gut sample group and environment sample group, and had significantly higher abundance in unhealthy groups than in healthy groups of carnivorous, filter-feeding, and scraper-feeding ecotypes. Therefore, using water environmental microHI to indicate the health status of wild fish is effective at the community level, is effective just for carnivorous fish at the ecotype level. In the middle Yangtze River, Alcaligenaceae, Enterobacteriaceae (family level), and Achromobacter (genus level) were the key water environmental microbial groups that potentially impacted wild fish health status. Of course, more data and research that test the current hypothesis and conclusion are encouraged.

Abstract
The microbial community structure in aquaculture water plays an important role in the intestinal microbial diversity of aquatic animals. The Chinese soft-shelled turtle (SST) (Trionyx sinensis) is an important aquaculture species of high economic value in the Asia-Pacific region. An intuitive understanding of the microbial diversity and abundances of SST aquaculture is crucial for comprehending these ecosystems. Herein, the evolutionary characteristics of the bacterial communities in the SST and its aquaculture water systems were investigated using Illumina MiSeq sequencing. This experiment sampled nine SSTs from a pond outside a greenhouse and was repeated three times. The sequencing results revealed significant differences in the microflora composition at the phylum and genus levels in both the intestine and aquaculture water of the SSTs in the greenhouse and pond aquaculture environments. A total of 1039 genera belonging to 65 phyla were identified. At the phylum level, the relative abundances of Chloroflexi (24%), Acidobacteria (5%), and Nitrospira (3%) were higher in the greenhouse water than in the pond water. The relative abundances of Bacteroidetes (35%), Actinobacteria (8%), and Cyanobacteria (4%) were higher in the pond water than in the greenhouse water. The intestinal microorganisms in the SSTs experienced significant changes after the SSTs were transferred from a greenhouse culture to a pond culture environment for 28 days. After the SSTs were cultured in the ponds, we observed decreases in the relative abundances of Actinobacteria (39% to 25%), Cyanobacteria (24% to 0.8%), Chlorobacteria (9% to 3%), and Firmicutes (5.5% to 0.8%. However, we observed increases in the relative abundances of Bacteroidetes (2% to 35%) and Acidobacteria (0.3% to 25%). These results showed that the bacterial diversity and richness compositions in the intestinal tract and aquaculture water were the same. However, the relative abundances of bacterial communities varied. The results of this study are of great significance in understanding how the environment affects SST cultures. These data may provide valuable instructions for Chinese soft-shelled turtle aquaculture management.

Abstract
Introduction The mud crab, Scylla paramamosain, holds great commercial significance as a marine crustacean widely cultivated in the Indo-Pacific region. Understanding the core gut microbiota of aquatic animals is crucial for their overall health and growth, yet the core gut microbiota of mud crab remains poorly characterized. Methods In this study, we gathered gut samples from mud crabs across five locations within Sanmen Bay, China. Through the utilization of high-throughput sequencing, we delved into the composition of the gut microbial community and identified the core gut microbiome of mud crab. Results Our results demonstrate that the gut microbial diversity of mud crab did not exhibit significant variation among the five sampling sites, although there were some differences in community richness. At the phylum level, we identified 35 representative phyla, with Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota, and Campilobacterota as the dominant phyla. Among the 815 representative genera, we discovered 19 core genera, which accounted for 65.45% of the total sequences. These core genera were distributed across 6 phyla, and among them, Photobacterium exhibited the highest average relative abundance. Discussion Photobacterium has probiotic activity and may play a crucial role in enhancing the immune response of the host and maintaining the diversity of the gut microbiota. Moreover, we observed a positive correlation between the relative abundance of core genera and the stability of the gut microbial community. Furthermore, our findings revealed distinct differences in gut microbial composition and specific taxa between the sexes of mud crab. These differences subsequently influenced the functionality of the gut microbial community. Overall, our investigation sheds light on the core gut microbiota of mud crab, emphasizing the importance of core gut microbial communities in maintaining the health and growth of these commercially significant marine crustaceans.

Abstract
The change in temperature will change the composition of intestinal microorganisms of juvenile Eriocheir sinensis, and the composition of intestinal microorganisms will affect the growth and development of juvenile crabs. In order to explore the relationship between intestinal microorganisms and growth of E. sinensis at different temperatures, the status of growth and intestinal microflora of juvenile E. sinensis reared at different water temperatures (15 °C, 23 °C, and 30 °C) were compared in this study. The results showed that the respective survival rate of juvenile E. sinensis in the three water temperature groups was 100%, 87.5%, and 64.44%. Moreover, the molting rate increased with an increase in water temperature, which was at 0%, 10%, and 71.11% for the three respective temperature groups. The average weight gain rate showed an overall increasing trend with the increase of water temperature. Moreover, the final fatness of the crabs in the 30 °C water temperature group was significantly lower than that in the 15 °C and 23 °C groups (p < 0.05); there was no significant difference in the liver-to-body ratio among the three groups. The results of the alpha diversity analysis of the 16S rRNA data revealed that there was no significant difference in the intestinal microbial abundance among the three water temperature groups; however, the intestinal microbial diversity in the 23 °C water temperature group was significantly lower than that in the 15 °C and 30 °C groups. At the phylum level, the dominant flora of the three groups was Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Bacteroidota. At the genus level, the abundance of Parabacteroides and Aeromonas in the intestine of the crabs in the 30 °C water temperature group was significantly higher than that in the 15 °C and 23 °C groups (p < 0.05). The function prediction showed that the main functional diversity of intestinal microflora of juvenile E. sinensis in the three water temperature groups was similar and mainly involved in metabolic-related functions, but there were still differences in the effects of water temperature on functional pathways such as metabolism, immunity, and growth among each group, either promoting or inhibiting. In conclusion, different water temperatures can affect the composition and function of intestinal flora of E. sinensis, and 23 °C-30 °C is the optimal water temperature for the growth of juvenile E. sinensis.

Abstract
To investigate the key gut microbiota and metabolites associated with the growth performance of Macrobrachium rosenbergii families, 16S rRNA sequencing and LC-MS metabolomic methods were used. In this study, 90 M. rosenbergii families were bred to evaluate growth performance. After 92 days of culture, high (H), medium (M), and low (L) experimental groups representing three levels of growth performance, respectively, were collected according to the weight gain and specific growth rate of families. The composition of gut microbiota showed that the relative abundance of Firmicutes, Lachnospiraceae, Lactobacillus, and Blautia were much higher in Group H than those in M and L groups. Meanwhile, compared to the M and L groups, Group H had significantly higher levels of spermidine, adenosine, and creatinine, and lower levels of L-citrulline. Correlation analysis showed that the abundances of Lactobacillus and Blautia were positively correlated with the levels of alpha-ketoglutaric acid and L-arginine. The abundance of Blautia was also positively correlated with the levels of adenosine, taurine, and spermidine. Notably, lots of metabolites related to the metabolism and biosynthesis of arginine, taurine, hypotaurine, and fatty acid were upregulated in Group H. This study contributes to figuring out the landscape of the gut microbiota and metabolites associated with prawn growth performance and provides a basis for selective breeding.

Abstract
This study aimed to explore the bacteria present in the digestive tracts of wild and cultivated Indonesian shortfin eel during the elver phase. The eel has high export potential due to its vitamin and micronutrient content, but slow growth and vulnerability to collapse in farm conditions hinder its cultivation. The microbiota in the eel's digestive tract is crucial for its health, particularly during the elver phase. This study used Next Generation Sequencing to analyze the community structure and diversity of bacteria in the eels' digestive tracts, focusing on the V3-V4 regions of the 16S rRNA gene. Mothur software was used for data analysis and PAST v.3.26 was used to calculate alpha diversity. The results showed that Proteobacteria (64.18%) and Firmicutes (33.55%) were the predominant phyla in the digestive tract of cultivated eels, while Bacteroidetes (54.16%), Firmicutes (14.71%), and Fusobacteria (10.56%) were predominant in wild eels. The most prevalent genera in cultivated and wild elver were Plesiomonas and Cetobacterium, respectively. The microbiota in the digestive tract of cultivated eels was diverse despite uneven distribution. The KEGG database analysis revealed that the primary function of the microbiome was to facilitate the eel's absorption of nutrients by contributing significantly to the metabolism of carbohydrates and amino acids. This study's findings can aid in assessing eel health and improving eel farming conditions.

Abstract
Gut microbiota is closely related to the health of the host and its adaptation to environmental changes. Sinopotamon planum is a species of freshwater crab that lives in the water for three seasons and plays a key role in freshwater ecosystems as a benthic macroinvertebrate, an important indicator of aquatic ecological health. In this study, we sequenced 60 gut microbial samples of S. planum and nine microbial samples from the surrounding water in spring, summer, and autumn based on the 16S rRNA gene. The results showed that gut microbiota had the highest alpha diversity in summer, which may be related to increased adaptability in summer. Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Bacteroidota were the most dominant phyla of gut microbiota across three seasons, with Candidatus Hepatoplasma and Candidatus Bacilloplasma being the main genera. These main phyla and genera may be key to maintaining a stable function of the intestinal environment. Firmicutes was the phylum with the highest relative abundance, which is probably related to the carnivorous behaviour of S. planum. The abundant C. Hepatoplasma may be related to the starvation of S. planum in the wild. In both gut and water microbiota, beta diversity analyses showed significant differences across seasons. Comparative analysis of gut microbes and surrounding water microbes showed significant differences in microbial diversity and composition between gut and surrounding water. In conclusion, the structure of the gut microbial community of S. planum differed significantly between the studied seasons, but the water microbial community around S. planum was less variable and significantly different from the gut microbes. The seasonal differences in gut microbes are more likely the result of self-internal adaptation to changes in water temperature and food resources between seasons.

Abstract
L-tryptophan (L-TRP) is an essential amino acid for the normal growth of crustaceans. As a nutritional supplement and antioxidant, L-TRP has the function of immune and antioxidant capacity regulation. From July to November, the effects of L-TRP on the immunity, antioxidant capacity and intestinal microflora of the Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) in pond culture were investigated. After feeding an L-TRP diet for 30 (named as August), 60 (named as September) and 106 (named as November) days, respectively, the activities of the immune and antioxidant enzymes in the hepatopancreas and hemolymph were evaluated, and the intestinal microbiota were profiled via high-throughput Illumina sequencing. The results showed that supplementation of L-TRP significantly increased the activities of AKP in the hepatopancreas in September, and significantly increased the activities of ACP in the hepatopancreas in August and September, and the hemolymph’s ACP activities also significantly increased in August and November (p < 0.05). Similarly, the activities of SOD, AOC and POD in the hepatopancreas significantly increased in September and November (p < 0.05) after feeding the L-TRP diet; meanwhile, the activities of SOD and AOC in the hemolymph also significantly increased in August (p < 0.05). However, in August, the L-TRP diet resulted in a significant increase in MDA activity in the hepatopancreas and hemolymph (p < 0.05). In addition, the results of the intestinal microbiota analysis showed that Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria were the dominant phyla in August, September and November, and Patescibacteria was the dominant phylum in September and November. After feeding the L-TRP diet, the richness of Cyanobacteria and Desulfobacterota significantly increased in August (p < 0.05), and the richness of Actinobacteriota significantly decreased in September (p < 0.05). Moreover, the L-TRP supplementation significantly reduced the abundance of ZOR0006 in the Firmicutes in September (p < 0.05). In conclusion, dietary L-TRP could improve the immunity and antioxidant ability and impact the intestinal health of E. sinensis at the early stage of pond culturing. However, long-term feeding of an L-TRP diet might have no positive impact on the activities of the immune, antioxidant enzymes and intestinal microbiota.

Abstract
Genetically improved farmed tilapia (GIFT, Oreochromis niloticus) are intensively farmed in China, where most of the yield derives from the pond culture system (PCS). The in-pond raceway system (IPRS) is a new type of highly efficient aquaculture mode, and has been recommended as a novel system for GIFT farming. To determine the effects of these culture modes on the gut microbiome of GIFT, we conducted a 90-days experiment in IPRS and PCS units. A 16S rRNA gene profile analysis showed that the composition of gut microbiota in GIFT under IPRS and PCS conditions gradually separated as rearing progressed, with divergent responses by the midgut and hindgut bacteria. The α-diversity in hindgut decreased significantly by day 90, as compared with on day 7 (p < 0.05), with a significantly greater decrease in PCS-reared fish than in IPRS fish (p < 0.05). The α-diversity of microbiota in midgut remained stable (p > 0.05). The overall dominant gut bacteria were Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, and Firmicutes. Rearing mode affected the taxonomic profile of the gut bacteria; in midgut, IPRS samples had more Firmicutes and Fusobacteria compared with PCS samples, but less Proteobacteria, Verrucomicrobia, and Actinobacteria. Firmicutes was enriched in IPRS hindgut, and Fusobacteria was enriched in PCS hindgut. Using random-forest models and LEfSe, we also screened core taxa that could discriminate between the gut microbial communities under IPRS and PCS conditions. The genus Cetobacterium (of family Fusobacteriaceae) was significantly enriched in midgut in IPRS fish, and enriched in hindgut in PCS fish. The genus Clostridium sensu stricto (of family Clostridiaceae 1) was significantly enriched in both IPRS midgut and hindgut. Analysis with PICRUSt2 software revealed that the culture modes were similar in their effects on the gut microbial metabolic functions. The predicted pathways were significantly enriched in the metabolism class (level 1). Further, the relative abundance of functions related to amino acid metabolic, carbohydrate metabolic, energy metabolic, and metabolic of cofactors and vitamins were high at hierarchy level 2, as the metabolic activity of intestinal bacteria is especially active. Overall, this study enhances our understanding of the characteristics of gut microbiota in GIFT under IPRS and PCS culture modes. Moreover, our findings provide insights into the microecological balance in IPRS units, and a theoretical reference for further development of this culture system.

Abstract
Although the importance of intestinal microbes to aquaculture animals has been recognized, the intestinal bacteria of Sinonovacula constricta and its culture environment are rarely studied. In this study, high-throughput sequencing was used to explore the intestinal bacterial communities of pond water, sediment, and S. constricta intestine. Significance analysis and principal coordinates analysis (PCoA) showed that there were significant differences in bacterial communities among animals' intestine, pond water, and sediment (p < 0.05). Venn analysis showed that intestinal bacteria shared a considerable number of OTUs (operational taxonomic units) with the sediment and water. SourceTracker analysis suggested that the contribution of sediment to the intestinal bacteria of S. constricta was much larger than that of rearing water. The Kruskal-Wallis test showed that the dominant bacterial taxa differed significantly between animals' intestines and the pond environment, and each of them has a unique bacterial composition. A network diagram indicated the complex positive and negative interactions between intestinal bacteria at the OTU level. Furthermore, BugBase analysis indicated that the bacterial contribution to potential pathogens in the animals' intestines is similar to that in sediments, suggesting that sediment was the main source of potential pathogens in S. constricta intestine. This study provided a theoretical basis for environmental regulation and disease prevention of S. constricta in aquaculture. KEY POINTS: • Culture environment had a significant effect on the intestinal bacterial community in S. constricta. • Sediment was a major source of intestinal bacteria and potentially pathogenic bacteria. • Complex positive and negative interactions existed between intestinal bacteria.

Abstract
The many ecological niches present in an organism harbor distinct microorganisms called microbiota. Different factors can influence the establishment of these commensal microbial communities. In a previous article, we have concluded that some bacterial lineages associated with the early larval stages of the Pacific blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris could be acquired from the breeders via a potential vertical transmission. The present study was conducted in order to investigate this hypothesis. Using HiSeq sequencing of the V4 region of 16S rRNA gene, we analyzed the active microbiota associated with the eggs and the nauplii of L. stylirsotris as well as with the reproductive organs of their breeders. Microbial communities associated with the rearing water were also considered to discriminate environmental microbial lineages. Using these analyses, we highlight a set of core bacterial families present in all samples and composed of members of Colwelliaceae, Alteromonadaceae, Pseudoalteromonadaceae, Saccharospirillaceae, Oceanospirillaceae, Vibrionaceae, Burkholderiaceae, Rhodobacteraceae, Flavobacteraceae, and Corynebacteriaceae; showing the importance of the environment in the establishment of the larval microbiota. We also present specific bacteria affiliated to the Arcobacteraceae, Rhodobacteraceae, Comamonadaceae, and Colwelliaceae families, which were only found in the breeders and their offspring strengthening the hypothesis of a potential vertical transmission shaping the active microbiota of the eggs and the nauplii of L. stylirostris.

Abstract
In aquatic animals, gut microbial communities shift with host development and living environments. Understanding the mechanism by which the environment impacts the gut microbial communities of aquatic animals is crucial for assessing and managing aquatic ecosystem health. Here, we proposed a simplified framework for the colonization and dynamics of gut microbial communities. Then, to quantify the colonization of environmental microbes in the wild fish gut, the current study used 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing to obtain the structure of the water environmental microbial community and the gut microbial community in 10 wild fish populations (Leiocassis crassilabris, Leiocassis longirostris, Pelteobagrus vachelli, Silurus asotus, Siniperca chuatsi, Coilia brachygnathus, Aristichthys nobilis, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, Coreius heterodon, and Xenocypris argentea) from the Wuhan section of the Yangtze River, and the relationship of these microbial communities was analyzed. The results identified that in most individuals, approximately 80% of gut microbes [at the operational taxonomic unit (OTU) level] were shared with the water environmental microbial community (except for individuals of Siniperca chuatsi and Coilia brachygnathus, approximately 74%). In approximately 80% of individuals, more than 95% of microbial species (OTUs) in the gut were transient. For fish species, more than 99% of microbial species (OTUs) that were introduced into the gut were transient. Nearly 79% of OTUs and 89% of species of water environmental microbes could be introduced into the fish gut. Driven by the introduction of transient microbes, fishes with similar feeding habits had similar gut microbial communities. The results indicated that for adult wild fishes, most gut microbiota were transient from the environmental microbiota that were related to fish feeding habits. We therefore encourage future research to focus on environmental microbiota monitoring and management to promote the better conservation of aquatic animals. It was important to note that, because of various influence factors, interspecific differences and individual variations on gut microbial community characteristics, the quantification of gut microbes in the current work was approximate rather than accurate. We hope that more comparable research could be conducted to outline the quantitative characteristics of the relationship between gut microbial community and aquatic environment microbial community as soon as possible.

Alterations of amino acid metabolism and intestinal microbiota in Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) fed on formulated diet and iced trash fish. Abstract
Formulated diet (FD) and iced trash fish (ITF) are common diets during E. sinensis farming. However, whether FD can completely replace ITF during long-term E. sinensis farming is still unclear. Thus this study was conducted to compare the differences in amino acid metabolism and intestinal microbiota of the E. sinensis fed on different diets. The crabs were randomly divided into three groups fed on FD, ITF and mixed diet (MD, FD: ITF = 1:1), respectively. The results showed that there were no significant differences in amino acid composition among FD, MD and ITF groups. The activities of AST and ALT, and the mRNA levels of amino acid metabolism-related genes were significantly up-regulated in FD or/and MD groups compared with ITF group. The diversity of intestinal bacterial community was similar between the FD and ITF groups, but the relative abundance of dominant taxa showed marked differences between the two groups. At the phylum level, the relative abundance of Firmicutes was significantly higher, but the relative abundance of Proteobacteria was significantly lower in the FD group than that in ITF group. Meanwhile, at genus level, the relative abundance of Candidatus_Hepatoplasma in FD was higher than that in ITF group. Data related to functional prediction demonstrated that the significantly differenced pathways between the two groups were observed in metabolism (Pyrimidine metabolism, Glycolysis/Gluconeogenesis and Citrate cycle) and environmental information processing (transporters). The overall results indicated that replacement of ITF by FD did not affect amino acid composition, but altered amino acid metabolism and the relative abundance of intestinal microbiota. Our data provided a valuable reference for FD application replacing ITF during long-term E. sinensis farming.
