Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to evaluate the derived neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (dNLR) in predicting the prognosis of patients with locally advanced oral squamous cell carcinoma (LAOSCC) and to assess the survival benefits from docetaxel, cisplatin, and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) (TPF) induction chemotherapy (IC). METHODS Patients from a phase III trial involving TPF IC in stage III/IVA OSCC patients (NCT01542931) were enrolled. Receiver operating characteristic curves were constructed, and the area under the curve was computed to determine dNLR cutoff points. Kaplan-Meier survival estimates and Cox proportional hazards models were used for longitudinal analysis. RESULTS A total of 224 patients were identified (median age: 55.4 years; range: 26 to 75 years; median follow-up: 90 months; range: 3.2 to 93 months). The cutoff point for the dNLR was 1.555. Multivariate analysis showed that the dNLR was an independent negative predictive factor for survival (overall survival (OS): hazard ratio (HR) = 1.154, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.018-1.309, p = 0.025; disease-free survival (DFS): HR = 1.123, 95% CI: 1.000-1.260, p = 0.050; local recurrence-free survival (LRFS): HR = 1.134, 95% CI: 1.002-1.283, p = 0.047; distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS): HR = 1.146, 95% CI: 1.010-1.300, p = 0.035). A low dNLR combined with cTNM stage III disease predicted benefit from TPF IC for the patients [OS (χ2 = 4.674, p = 0.031), DFS (χ2 = 7.134, p = 0.008), LRFS (χ2 = 5.937, p = 0.015), and DMFS (χ2 = 4.832, p = 0.028)]. CONCLUSIONS The dNLR is an independent negative predictive factor in LAOSCC patients. Patients with cTNM stage III disease and a low dNLR can benefit from TPF IC.

Abstract
Rationale It is unclear whether lifestyle factors affect bone mineral density (BMD) during different inflammatory states. Objective This study investigated the effects of coffee consumption, vitamin D (VD) intake, smoking, and alcohol consumption on heel BMD in adults with different inflammatory states. Methods The phenotypic data from 249,825 participants were analyzed using the UK Biobank cohort. The inflammatory status was evaluated using C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and the systemic immune-inflammation index. Linear regression analysis was used to examine the association between coffee consumption, VD, smoking, alcohol consumption, and heel BMD in adults with different inflammatory states. Linear regression models were used to analyze the interaction between inflammation and the four lifestyle factors with respect to their influence on heel BMD in adults. Results Our findings revealed that VD was positively associated with adult heel BMD (β = 2.41 × 10-2, SE = 5.14 × 10-3, P = 2.72 × 10-6), while alcohol consumption and smoking were negatively associated with adult heel BMD. Coffee was negatively associated with adult heel BMD in low inflammatory states (β = -1.27 × 10-2, SE = 4.79 × 10-3, P = 8.00 × 10-3), while there was no association between coffee and adult heel BMD in high inflammatory states. Overall, it was found that these four lifestyle factors interacted negatively with inflammatory states. Conclusion Our study suggests that VD is positively associated with adult heel BMD and that alcohol consumption and smoking are negatively associated with adult heel BMD. Coffee may reverse the adverse effects of inflammation on BMD when the patient is in a highly inflammatory state, thus acting as a protective agent against heel BMD in adults.

Abstract
Background Systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), a novel prognostic indicator, is being more commonly utilized in different types of cancer. This research project involved combining information from previously published studies to examine how pre-treatment SII can predict outcomes in individuals with upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC). Further examination of the correlation between SII and clinical and pathological features in UTUC. Methods We thoroughly chose pertinent articles from various databases including PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), WanFang database, and Chinese Scientific Journal Database (VIP) until March 10, 2022.The data collected was analyzed using Stata 17.0 software (Stat Corp, College Station, TX). Subsequently, the impact of SII on the survival outcomes of UTUC patients was evaluated by combining HRs with 95% confidence intervals. Results Six included studies were finally confirmed, including 3911 UTUC patients in seven cohorts. The results showed that high SII before treatment predicted poor overall survival (HR =1.87, 95%CI 1.20-2.92, p=0.005), cancer specific survival (HR=2.70, 95%CI 1.47-4.96, P=0.001), and recurrence-free survival (HR =1.52, 95%CI 1.12-2.07, P=0.007). And the elevated SII may be related to LVI (present vs. absent) (OR=0.83, 95% CI=0.71-0.97, p=0.018), pT stage (pT ≥3 vs. < 3) (OR=1.82, 95% CI=1.21-2.72, p=0.004), and pN stage (N+ vs. N0) (OR=3.27, 95% CI=1.60-6.71, p=0.001). Conclusion A comprehensive analysis of all included articles in this study showed that higher pretreatment SII was related to poorer survival outcomes and adverse pathological features independently. Abstract
Objective Systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), a novel inflammatory marker, has been reported to be associated with diabetic kidney disease (DKD) in the U.S., however, such a close relationship with DKD in other countries, including China, has not been never determined. We aimed to explore the association between SII and DKD in Chinese population. Methods A total of 1922 hospitalized patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) included in this cross-sectional study were divided into three groups based on estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR): non-DKD group, DKD stages 1-2 Alb group, and DKD-non-Alb+DKD stage 3 Alb group. The possible association of SII with DKD was investigated by correlation and multivariate logistic regression analysis, and receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves analysis. Results Moving from the non-DKD group to the DKD-non-Alb+DKD stage 3 Alb group, SII level was gradually increased (P for trend <0.01). Partial correlation analysis revealed that SII was positively associated with urinary ACR and prevalence of DKD, and negatively with eGFR (all P<0.01). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that SII remained independently significantly associated with the presence of DKD after adjustment for all confounding factors [(odds ratio (OR), 2.735; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.840-4.063; P < 0.01)]. Moreover, compared with subjects in the lowest quartile of SII (Q1), the fully adjusted OR for presence of DKD was 1.060 (95% CI 0.773-1.455) in Q2, 1.167 (95% CI 0.995-1.368) in Q3, 1.266 (95% CI 1.129-1.420) in the highest quartile (Q4) (P for trend <0.01). Similar results were observed in presence of DKD stages 1-2 Alb or presence of DKD-non- Alb+DKD stage 3 Alb among SII quartiles. Last, the analysis of ROC curves revealed that the best cutoff values for SII to predict DKD, Alb DKD stages 1- 2, and DKD-non-Alb+ DKD stage 3 Alb were 609.85 (sensitivity: 48.3%; specificity: 72.8%), 601.71 (sensitivity: 43.9%; specificity: 72.3%), and 589.27 (sensitivity: 61.1%; specificity: 71.1%), respectively. Conclusion Higher SII is independently associated with an increased risk of the presence and severity of DKD, and SII might be a promising biomarker for DKD and its distinct phenotypes in Chinese population.

Abstract
Members of the omega class of glutathione transferases (GSTs), GSTO1, and GSTO2, catalyze a range of reduction reactions as a part of the antioxidant defense system. Polymorphisms of genes encoding antioxidant proteins and the resultant altered redox profile have already been associated with the increased risk for testicular germ cell cancer (GCT) development. The aim of this pilot study was to assess the individual, combined, haplotype, and cumulative effect of GSTO1rs4925, GSTO2rs156697, and GSTO2rs2297235 polymorphisms with the risk for testicular GCT development, in 88 patients and 96 matched controls, through logistic regression models. We found that carriers of the GSTO1*C/A*C/C genotype exhibited an increased risk for testicular GCT development. Significant association with increased risk of testicular GCT was observed in carriers of GSTO2rs2297235*A/G*G/G genotype, and in carriers of combined GSTO2rs156697*A/G*G/G and GSTO2rs2297235*A/G*G/G genotypes. Haplotype H7 (GSTO1rs4925*C/GSTO2rs2297235*G/GSTO2rs156697*G) exhibited higher risk of testicular GCT, however, without significant association (p > 0.05). Finally, 51% of testicular GCT patients were the carriers of all three risk-associated genotypes, with 2.5-fold increased cumulative risk. In conclusion, the results of this pilot study suggest that GSTO polymorphisms might affect the protective antioxidant activity of GSTO isoenzymes, therefore predisposing susceptible individuals toward higher risk for testicular GCT development.

Abstract
In contemporary clinical practice, biomarkers are indispensable in the assessment and management of oncological patients. Although established serum tumor markers (beta human chorionic gonadotropin (bHCG), alpha fetoprotein (AFP), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH)) have an indisputably important role in the management of patients with testicular cancer (TC), the application of these tumor markers may be accompanied with certain limitations, implying the need for additional biomarkers. Contrary to TC, there is a lack of established serological biomarkers for penile cancer (PC) and the management of this urological malignancy is based on multiple clinicopathological parameters. Therefore, the identification and rigorous analytical and clinical validation of reliable biomarkers are considered pivotal for improving PC management. Inflammation may be associated with all stages of oncogenesis, from initial neoplastic transformation to angiogenesis, tissue invasion, and metastasis. Accordingly, an array of inflammation-related indices have gained increasing attention as emerging predictors of oncological outcomes. The clinical usefulness of systemic inflammation markers was reported in many urological and non-urological malignancies. The aim of this narrative review is to summarize current scientific data regarding the prognostic and predictive significance of systemic inflammation markers in TC and PC patients.
