The Impacts of Urbanization to Improve Agriculture Water Use Efficiency—An Empirical Analysis Based on Spatial Perspective of Panel Data of 30 Provinces of China

The impacts of cropland balance policy on habitat quality in China: A multiscale administrative perspective

Cropland protection policies are implemented to guarantee food security, especially the cropland balance policy in China. Although these policies alleviate the quantitative loss of cropland, they cause a serious decline in habitat quality and reduce biodiversity. With the reform trial of China's cropland balance policy from the within-province scale to the cross-provincial scale, the evaluation of habitat quality for obtaining cropland balance at different administrative scales is necessary to help seek sustainable strategies of cropland protection. Thus, taking Chinese mainland as the study area, this research assessed the different impacts of the cropland balance policy on habitat quality during 2000-2015 and 2015-2030 at national, provincial, municipal and county scales on the basis of the LAND System Cellular Automata model for Potential Effects (LANDSCAPE) and the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs model (InVEST). The results revealed that (1) the loss of habitat quality by compensated cropland was 4.02 times that of the loss by occupied cropland in 2000-2015. Compared with occupied cropland, compensated cropland dominated the impacts of cropland change on habitat quality. (2) For both cropland quantity balance and cropland quality balance, habitat quality was slightly lost the most on the national scale in 2030. In detail, the greatest loss of habitat quality mostly occurred in areas where the ecological environment is already vulnerable at the national scale, whereas habitat quality was relatively less in these areas at the provincial, municipal and county scales. (3) Under the same administrative scales, habitat quality was lost more in cropland quality balance scenarios than in cropland quantity balance scenarios. The loss of habitat quality caused by cropland quality balance at national, provincial, municipal and county scales was 1.25, 1.05, 0.90 and 1.37 times higher than that by cropland quantity balance, respectively. The research highlights that considering the differentiated loss of habitat quality caused by cropland protection is quite important when implementing the cropland balance policy and land use planning.

Developing a Conceptual Partner Matching Framework for Digital Green Innovation of Agricultural High-End Equipment Manufacturing System Toward Agriculture 5.0: A Novel Niche Field Model Combined With Fuzzy VIKOR

Digital green innovation (DGI) is the core factor that affects the digitalization and decarbonization strategy of agricultural high-end equipment manufacturing (AHEM) system. Although AHEM enterprises actively cooperate with academic research institutes to develop agricultural high-end equipment, there are many obstacles in the process of DGI. Moreover, the integration of digital technology and green innovation from the perspective of partner matching for the AHEM system has not been fully introduced in current literature. Hence, this study aimed to (i) establish a suitable framework system for the AHEM system in general, (ii) quantify the selection of DGI by academic research institutions based on niche theory, and (iii) propose an extended niche field model combined with fuzzy VIKOR model. First, a theoretical framework consisting of three core elements of technology superposition, mutual benefit, and mutual trust, and technological complementarity was constructed based on niche intensity and niche overlap degree. DGI ability superposition of technology, mutual trust, and technical complementarity are beneficial for transferring DGI knowledge from academic research institutes to the AHEM industry. Second, triangle fuzzy number and prospect theory combined with the VIKOR method were introduced into the field theory to construct the complementary field model of DGI resources. The niche field model has been successfully applied to practical cases to illustrate how the model can be implemented to solve the problem of DGI partner selection. Third, the results of a case study show that the criteria framework and the niche field model can be applied to real-world partner selection for AHEM enterprises. This study not only puts forward the standard framework of niche fitness evaluation based on niche theory but also establishes the niche domain model of innovation partner selection management based on niche theory. The standard framework and novel niche field model can help enterprises to carry out digital green innovation in the development of high-end agricultural equipment. The study has the following theoretical and practical implications: (i) constructing a criteria framework based on niche theory; (ii) developing a novel niche field model for DGI partner selection of AHEM enterprises; and (iii) assisting AHEM enterprises to perform DGI practice.

Conceptual Evaluation of Factors Controlling Groundwater Chemistry in Ad-Dawadmi, Saudi Arabia, Using Visualization and Multiple Lines of Evidence

Understanding the hydrogeochemical and physicochemical processes and factors controlling the chemical characteristics of groundwater (GW) is essential in water resources studies. In this work, the authors explored, applied, and evaluated the practicality of a series of analysis methods, exploring their ability to improve the representation of the generic GW chemical datasets. The demonstration resulted in a detailed explanation of findings and interpretations, which benefits newcomers who may not be experts in managing such data. Visualization-based, facile, readily readable, and interpretable graphs were tuned and applied to identify the interconnected controlling factors. The examined varieties were bubble diagrams, 3D surface plots, and scatter box plot matrices. Box plot matrices yielded intensive information about the significant interacting parameters in one graph. Employing bubble diagrams produced vast detail, allowing the identification of the significant processes and enabling the recognition of internally acting mechanisms that were otherwise hidden. The identified GW evolution processes include aerosol dissolution, evaporation, direct and reverse ion exchange, precipitation of calcium salts, flushing out of soil-bounded salts, and rock weathering. pH and HCO3− fluctuations coupled with evaporation were recognized as prominent factors giving rise to the vicious salinization cycle, which is thought to be the process causing the worst deterioration in the GW quality and the salinity within the study area.
