Astrochemical Pathways to Complex Organic and Prebiotic Molecules: Experimental Perspectives for In Situ Solid-State Studies

3He spin-echo scattering indicates hindered diffusion of isolated water molecules on graphene-covered Ir(111)

The dynamics of water diffusion on carbon surfaces are of interest in fields as diverse as furthering the use of graphene as an industrial-coating technology and understanding the catalytic role of carbon-based dust grains in the interstellar medium. The early stages of water-ice growth and the mobility of water adsorbates are inherently dependent on the microscopic mechanisms that facilitate water diffusion. Here, we use 3He spin-echo quasi-inelastic scattering to probe the microscopic mechanisms responsible for the diffusion of isolated water molecules on graphene-covered and bare Ir(111). The scattering of He atoms provides a non-invasive and highly surface-sensitive means to measure the rate at which absorbates move around on a substrate at very low coverage. Our results provide an approximate upper limit on the diffusion coefficient for water molecules on GrIr(111) of < 10 - 12  m2/s, an order of magnitude lower than the coefficient that describes the diffusion of water molecules on the bare Ir(111) surface. We attribute the hindered diffusion of water molecules on the GrIr(111) surface to water trapping at specific areas of the corrugated moiré superstructure. Lower mobility of water molecules on a surface is expected to lead to a lower ice nucleation rate and may enhance the macroscopic anti-icing properties of a surface.

Formation of Complex Organic and Prebiotic Molecules in H2O:NH3:CO2 Ices at Temperatures Relevant to Hot Cores, Protostellar Envelopes, and Planet-Forming Disks

Photochemistry in H₂O:NH₃:CO₂ cosmic ice analogues was studied at temperatures of 75, 120, and 150 K, relevant to hot cores and warmer regions in protostellar envelopes and planet-forming disks. A combination of two triggers of surface chemistry in cosmic ice analogues, heat and UV irradiation, compared to using either just heat or UV irradiation, leads to a larger variety and an increased production of complex organic molecules, including potential precursors of prebiotic molecules. In addition to complex organic molecules detected in previous studies of H₂O:NH₃:CO₂ ices, ammonium carbamate, carbamic acid, ammonium formate and formamide, we detected acetaldehyde, urea, and, tentatively, glycine, the simplest amino acid. Water ice hampers reactions at low temperature (75 K) but allows the parent molecules, CO₂ and NH₃, to stay in the solid state and react at higher temperatures (120 and 150 K, above their desorption temperatures). The experiments were performed on the surface of KBr substrates and amorphous silicate grains, analogs of cosmic silicate dust. The production of complex molecules on the silicate surface is decreased compared to KBr. This result suggests that the larger surface area and/or surface properties of the silicate grains play a role in controlling the chemistry, preventing it taking place to the same extent as on the flat KBr substrate. This is further evidence of the fact that cosmic dust grains play an important role in the chemistry taking place on their surface.

Neutral Dissociation of Pyridine Evoked by Irradiation of Ionized Atomic and Molecular Hydrogen Beams

The interactions of ions with molecules and the determination of their dissociation patterns are challenging endeavors of fundamental importance for theoretical and experimental science. In particular, the investigations on bond-breaking and new bond-forming processes triggered by the ionic impact may shed light on the stellar wind interaction with interstellar media, ionic beam irradiations of the living cells, ion-track nanotechnology, radiation hardness analysis of materials, and focused ion beam etching, deposition, and lithography. Due to its vital role in the natural environment, the pyridine molecule has become the subject of both basic and applied research in recent years. Therefore, dissociation of the gas phase pyridine (C₅H₅N) into neutral excited atomic and molecular fragments following protons (H⁺) and dihydrogen cations (H₂⁺) impact has been investigated experimentally in the 5–1000 eV energy range. The collision-induced emission spectroscopy has been exploited to detect luminescence in the wavelength range from 190 to 520 nm at the different kinetic energies of both cations. High-resolution optical fragmentation spectra reveal emission bands due to the CH(A²Δ→X²Π_r; B²Σ⁺→X²Π_r; C²Σ⁺→X²Π_r) and CN(B²Σ⁺→X²Σ⁺) transitions as well as atomic H and C lines. Their spectral line shapes and qualitative band intensities are examined in detail. The analysis shows that the H₂⁺ irradiation enhances pyridine ring fragmentation and creates various fragments more pronounced than H⁺ cations. The plausible collisional processes and fragmentation pathways leading to the identified products are discussed and compared with the latest results obtained in cation-induced fragmentation of pyridine.
