A Global and Local Feature fused CNN architecture for the sEMG-based hand gesture recognition

Deep learning methods have been widely used for the classification of hand gestures using sEMG signals. Existing deep learning architectures only captures local spatial information and has limitations in extracting global temporal dependency to enhance the model's performance. In this paper, we propose a Global and Local Feature fused CNN (GLF-CNN) model that extracts features both globally and locally from sEMG signals to enhance the performance of hand gestures classification. The model contains two independent branches extracting local and global features each and fuses them to learn more diversified features and effectively improve the stability of gesture recognition. Besides, it also exhibits lower computational cost compared to the present approaches. We conduct experiments on five benchmark databases, including the NinaPro DB4, NinaPro DB5, BioPatRec DB1-DB3, and the Mendeley Data. The proposed model achieved the highest average accuracy of 88.34% on these databases, with a 9.96% average accuracy improvement and a 50% reduction in variance compared to the models with the same number of parameters. Moreover, the classification accuracies for the BioPatRec DB1, BioPatRec DB3 and Mendeley Data are 91.4%, 91.0% and 88.6% respectively, corresponding to an improvement of 13.2%, 41.5% and 12.2% over the respective state-of-the-art models. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model effectively enhances robustness, with improved gesture recognition performance and generalization ability. It contributes a new way for prosthetic control and human-machine interaction.

Low-Density sEMG-Based Pattern Recognition of Unrelated Movements Rejection for Wrist Joint Rehabilitation

sEMG-based pattern recognition commonly assumes a limited number of target categories, and the classifiers often predict each target category depending on probability. In wrist rehabilitation training, the patients may make movements that do not belong to the target category unconsciously. However, most pattern recognition methods can only identify limited patterns and are prone to be disturbed by abnormal movement, especially for wrist joint movements. To address the above the problem, a sEMG-based rejection method for unrelated movements is proposed to identify wrist joint unrelated movements using center loss. In this paper, the sEMG signal collected by the Myo armband is used as the input of the sEMG control method. First, the sEMG signal is processed by sliding signal window and image coding. Then, the CNN with center loss and softmax loss is used to describe the spatial information from the sEMG image to extract discriminative features and target movement recognition. Finally, the deep spatial information is used to train the AE to reject unrelated movements based on the reconstruction loss. The results show that the proposed method can realize the target movements recognition and reject unrelated movements with an F-score of 93.4% and a rejection accuracy of 95% when the recall is 0.9, which reveals the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Applying Deep Learning-Based Human Motion Recognition System in Sports Competition

The exploration here intends to compensate for the traditional human motion recognition (HMR) systems' poor performance on large-scale datasets and micromotions. To this end, improvement is designed for the HMR in sports competition based on the deep learning (DL) algorithm. First, the background and research status of HMR are introduced. Then, a new HMR algorithm is proposed based on kernel extreme learning machine (KELM) multidimensional feature fusion (MFF). Afterward, a simulation experiment is designed to evaluate the performance of the proposed KELM-MFF-based HMR algorithm. The results showed that the recognition rate of the proposed KELM-MFF-based HMR is higher than other algorithms. The recognition rate at 10 video frame sampling points is ranked from high to low: the proposed KELM-MFF-based HMR, support vector machine (SVM)-MFF-based HMR, convolutional neural network (CNN) + optical flow (CNN-T)-based HMR, improved dense trajectory (IDT)-based HMR, converse3D (C3D)-based HMR, and CNN-based HMR. Meanwhile, the feature recognition rate of the proposed KELM-MFF-based HMR for the color dimension is higher than the time dimension, by up to 24%. Besides, the proposed KELM-MFF-based HMR algorithm's recognition rate is 92.4% under early feature fusion and 92.1% under late feature fusion, higher than 91.8 and 90.5% of the SVM-MFF-based HMR. Finally, the proposed KELM-MFF-based HMR algorithm takes 30 and 15 s for training and testing. Therefore, the algorithm designed here can be used to deal with large-scale datasets and capture and recognize micromotions. The research content provides a reference for applying extreme learning machine algorithms in sports competitions.
