Evaluating the Impact of Intraoperative MRI in Neuro-Oncology by Scientometric Analysis

Global trends in neonatal MRI brain neuroimaging research over the last decade: a bibliometric analysis

Background

Neuroimaging plays a central role in the evaluation, treatment, and prognosis of neonates. In recent years, the exploration of the developing brain has been a major focus of research for researchers and clinicians. In this study, we conducted bibliometric and visualization analyses of the related studies in the field of neonatal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain neuroimaging from the past 10 years, and summarized its research status, hotspots, and frontier development trends.

Methods

The Web of Science core collection database was used as the literature source from which to retrieve the relevant papers and reviews in the field of neonatal MRI brain neuroimaging published in the Science Citation Index-Expanded from 2013 to 2022. VOSviewer and CiteSpace were used to conduct bibliometric and visualization analyses of the annual publication volume, countries, institutions, journals, authors, co-cited literature, and the overall distribution of keywords.

Results

We retrieved 3,568 papers and reviews published from 2013 to 2022. The number of publications increased during this period. The United States (US) and the United Kingdom were the largest contributors, with the US receiving the highest H-index and number of citations. The institutions that published the most were the University of London and Harvard University. The research mainly focused on cerebral cortex, brain tissue, brain structure network, artificial intelligence algorithm, automatic image segmentation, and premature infants.

Conclusions

This study reveals the research status and hotspots of magnetic resonance imaging in the field of neonatal brain neuroimaging in the past decade, which helps researchers to better understand the research status, hotspots, and frontier development trends.

A bibliometric analysis of research foci and trends in cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury involving autophagy during 2008 to 2022

BACKGROUND

Cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury (CIRI) is a complex pathophysiological process that typically occurs during the treatment of ischemia, with limited therapeutic options. Autophagy plays a vital role during the reperfusion phase and is a potential therapeutic target for preventing and treating cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury.

METHODS

We conducted a comprehensive search of the Web of Science Core Collection for publications related to cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury with autophagy, published between January 1, 2008, and January 1, 2023. We analyzed the selected publications using VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and other bibliometric tools.

RESULTS

Our search yielded 877 relevant publications. The field of autophagy in cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury has grown rapidly since 2016. China has been the leading contributor to publications, followed by the USA and Iran. Chen Zhong and Qin Zhenghong have been influential in this field but have yet to reach all groups. In addition, there has been a shortage of collaboration among authors from different institutions. Our literature and keyword analysis identified Neurovascular protection (#11 Neuroprotective, #13 Neurovascular units, etc) and Inflammation (NLRP3 inflammasome) as popular research directions. Furthermore, the terms "Blood-Brain Barrier," "Mitophagy," and "Endoplasmic reticulum stress" have been frequently used and may be hot research topics in the future.

CONCLUSIONS

The role of autophagy in cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury remains unclear, and the specific mechanisms of drugs used to treat ischemia-reperfusion injury still need to be explored. This work outlines the changing trends in investigating cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury involving autophagy and suggests future lines of inquiry.

Long-Term Outcomes of Patients with Primary Brain Tumors after Acute Rehabilitation: A Retrospective Analyses of Factors

Although primary brain tumors are relatively rare, they cause significant morbidity and mortality due to the high rates of neurological impairment. The purpose of this study was to examine the physical and functional outcomes of patients with primary brain tumors who had undergone inpatient rehabilitation. This was a retrospective study which recruited 163 patients who had been admitted for inpatient rehabilitation. Rehabilitation outcomes, including the Functional Independence Measure (FIM) and Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS), were recorded up to 1 year post-discharge. The majority of patients (79.1%) had low-grade (WHO Class I-II) tumors, 35 (21.5%) were diagnosed with GBM and 52 (31.9%) had recurrent brain tumors. Rehabilitation outcomes were sustained, with 125 (76.7%) and 113 (69.3%) patients having a GOS of ≥4 at 6 months and 1 year after discharge, respectively. A GOS of ≥4 at 1 year was negatively associated with high-grade tumors (p < 0.001) and radiotherapy (p = 0.028), and positively associated with a higher discharge FIM motor score (p < 0.001) and the presence of a caregiver after discharge (p = 0.034). Our study demonstrates significant positive functional benefits from 4 weeks of inpatient neuro-oncological rehabilitation for patients with primary brain tumors, as well as the importance of supportive care from caregivers.

Neurosurgical Clinical Trials for Glioblastoma: Current and Future Directions

The mainstays of glioblastoma treatment, maximal safe resection, radiotherapy preserving neurological function, and temozolomide (TMZ) chemotherapy have not changed for the past 17 years despite significant advances in the understanding of the genetics and molecular biology of glioblastoma. This review highlights the neurosurgical foundation for glioblastoma therapy. Here, we review the neurosurgeon’s role in several new and clinically-approved treatments for glioblastoma. We describe delivery techniques such as blood–brain barrier disruption and convection-enhanced delivery (CED) that may be used to deliver therapeutic agents to tumor tissue in higher concentrations than oral or intravenous delivery. We mention pivotal clinical trials of immunotherapy for glioblastoma and explain their outcomes. Finally, we take a glimpse at ongoing clinical trials and promising translational studies to predict ways that new therapies may improve the prognosis of patients with glioblastoma.
