Preparation and Optimization of Fluorescent Thin Films of Rosamine-SiO2/TiO2 Composites for NO2 Sensing

Functionalization of Rhodamine Platforms with 3-Hydroxy-4-pyridinone Chelating Units and Its Fluorescence Behavior towards Fe(III)

Functionalization of xanthene fluorophores with specific receptor units is an important topic of research aiming for the development of new analytical tools for biological sciences, clinical diagnosis, food and environmental monitoring. Herein, we report a new dihydrorosamine containing two active amino groups, which was functionalized with 3-benzyloxy-1-(3′-carboxypropyl)-2-methyl-4-pyridinone through an amide coupling strategy. Benzylated mono- and di-functionalized dihydrorosamine derivatives (H in position 9 of the xanthene) were obtained, but with modest reaction yields, requiring long and laborious purification procedures. Looking for a more efficient approach, rhodamine 110 was selected to react with the carboxypropyl pyridinone, enabling the isolation of the corresponding mono- and di-functionalized derivatives in amounts that depend on the excess of pyridinone added to the reaction. The structure of all compounds was established by ¹H and ¹³C NMR, MS (ESI) and their absorption and emission properties were evaluated in dichloromethane. The fluorescence behavior of the debenzylated mono-rhodamine 110 derivative in the presence of Fe(III) was studied, making it an interesting fluorogenic dye for future optical sensing applications.

A new family of microporous 2-dimensional rare earth metal organic frameworks based on a hexanuclear secondary building unit with capability to selectively detect vapours of volatile organic compounds and nitroaromatic explosives is reported.

Effect of the Functionalization of Porous Silicon/WO₃ Nanorods with Pd Nanoparticles and Their Enhanced NO₂-Sensing Performance at Room Temperature

The decoration of noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) on the surface of metal oxide semiconductors to enhance material characteristics and gas-sensing performance has recently attracted increasing attention from researchers worldwide. Here, we have synthesized porous silicon (PS)/WO₃ nanorods (NRs) functionalized with Pd NPs to enhance NO₂ gas-sensing performance. PS was first prepared using electrochemical methods and worked as a substrate. WO₃ NRs were synthesized by thermally oxidizing W film on the PS substrate. Pd NPs were decorated on the surface of WO₃ NRs via in-situ reduction of the Pd complex solution by using Pluronic P123 as the reducing agent. The gas-sensing characteristics were tested at different gas concentrations and different temperatures ranging from room temperature to 200 °C. Results revealed that, compared with bare PS/WO₃ NRs and Si/WO₃ NRs functionalized with Pd NPs, the Pd-decorated PS/WO₃ NRs exhibited higher and quicker responses to NO₂, with a detection concentration as low as 0.25 ppm and a maximum response at room temperature. The gas-sensing mechanism was also investigated and is discussed in detail. The high surface area to volume ratio of PS and the reaction-absorption mechanism can be explained the enhanced sensing performance.

Fabrication of Nanosized Island-Like CdO Crystallites-Decorated TiO₂ Rod Nanocomposites via a Combinational Methodology and Their Low-Concentration NO₂ Gas-Sensing Behavior

TiO₂–CdO composite rods were synthesized through a hydrothermal method and sputtering thin-film deposition. The hydrothermally derived TiO₂ rods exhibited a rectangular cross-sectional crystal feature with a smooth surface, and the as-synthesized CdO thin film exhibited a rounded granular surface feature. Structural analyses revealed that the CdO thin film sputtered onto the surfaces of the TiO₂ rods formed a discontinuous shell layer comprising many island-like CdO crystallites. The TiO₂–CdO composite rods were highly crystalline, and their surfaces were rugged. A comparison of the NO₂ gas-sensing properties of the CdO thin film, TiO₂ rods, and TiO₂–CdO composite rods revealed that the composite rods exhibited superior gas-sensing responses to NO₂ gas than did the CdO thin film and TiO₂ rods, which can be attributed to the microstructural differences and the formation of heterojunctions between the TiO₂ core and CdO crystallites.
