Synthesis and Application of Cellulose-Polyethyleneimine Composites and Nanocomposites: A Concise Review

Cellulose/polyethyleneimine composites have increasingly attracted the attention of scientific community, devoted to the design and development of new synthetic strategies and materials for different application fields. In this review, after introducing the main characteristics of the two polymeric components, we provide in the second section a critical overview on the main protocols for the synthesis of these composites, considering both the several cellulose sources and forms, and the different cross-linkers and cross-linking procedures developed for this purpose, outlining advantages and limits for the reported approaches. The last section analyses the principal results obtained in different application fields. A wide discussion is dedicated to the principal use of cellulose/polyethyleneimine composites as sorbents for water remediation from heavy metal ions and organic contaminants. Subsequently, we introduce the literature describing the use of these composites, functionalized appropriately, where necessary, as drug delivery systems, sensors, and heterogeneous catalysts for organic reactions. Finally, after a brief description of other random applications, we furnish a personal analysis of actual limits and potentialities for these systems.

A SnO2/CeO2 Nano-Composite Catalyst for Alizarin Dye Removal from Aqueous Solutions

A new SnO₂/CeO₂ nano-composite catalyst was synthesized, characterized and used for the removal of alizarin dyes from aqueous solutions. The composite material was prepared using a precipitation method. X-ray powder diffractometry (XRD), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller methodology (BET) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry (ATR-FTIR) were utilized for the characterization of the prepared composite. The prepared nano-composite revealed high affinity for the adsorption and decomposition of alizarin dyes. The adsorption capacity under different experimental conditions (adsorbate concentration, contact time, adsorbent dose and pH) was examined. Under optimized experimental conditions, the removal of alizarin yellow, alizarin red and alizarin-3-methylimino-diacetic acid dyes from aqueous solutions was about 96.4%,87.8% and 97.3%, respectively. The adsorption isotherms agreed with the models of Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherms.

Preparation of Nafion/Polycation Layer-by-Layer Films for Adsorption and Release of Insulin

Thin films were prepared using layer-by-layer (LbL) deposition of Nafion (NAF) and polycations such as poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH), poly(ethyleneimine) (PEI), and poly(diallydimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA). Insulin was then adsorbed on the NAF-polycation LbL films by immersion in an insulin solution. The NAF-polycation LbL films were characterized using a quartz crystal microbalance and an atomic force microscope. The release of insulin from the LbL films was characterized using UV-visible adsorption spectroscopy and fluorescence emission spectroscopy. The greatest amount of insulin was adsorbed on the NAF-PAH LbL film. The amount of insulin adsorbed on the (NAF/PAH)₅NAF LbL films by immersion in a 1 mg mL-1 insulin solution at pH 7.4 was 61.8 µg cm-2. The amount of insulin released from the LbL films was higher when immersed in insulin solutions at pH 2.0 and pH 9.0 than at pH 7.4. Therefore, NAF-polycations could be employed as insulin delivery LbL films under mild conditions and as an insulin release control system according to pH change.

Voltammetric Response of Alizarin Red S-Confined Film-Coated Electrodes to Diol and Polyol Compounds: Use of Phenylboronic Acid-Modified Poly(ethyleneimine) as Film Component

Alizarin red S (ARS) was confined in layer-by-layer (LbL) films composed of phenylboronic acid-modified poly(ethyleneimine) (PBA-PEI) and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) to study the voltammetric response to diol and polyol compounds. The LbL film-coated gold (Au) electrode and quartz slide were immersed in an ARS solution to uptake ARS into the film. UV-visible absorption spectra of ARS-confined LbL film suggested that ARS formed boronate ester (ARS-PBS) in the film. The cyclic voltammetry of the ARS-confined LbL film-coated electrodes exhibited oxidation peaks at -0.50 and -0.62 V, which were ascribed to the oxidation reactions of ARS-PBS and free ARS, respectively, in the LbL film. The peak current at -0.62 V increased upon the addition of diol or polyol compounds such as L-dopa, glucose, and sorbitol into the solution, depending on the concentration, whereas the peak current at -0.50 V decreased. The results suggest a possible use of ARS-confined PBA-PEI/CMC LbL film-coated Au electrodes for the construction of voltammetric sensors for diol and polyol compounds.
