Two New Sandwich-Type Polyoxomolybdates Functionalized with Diphosphonates: Efficient and Selective Oxidation of Sulfides to Sulfones

Diphosphoryl-functionalized Polyoxometalates: Structurally and Electronically Tunable Hybrid Molecular Materials

Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of a new class of hybrid Wells-Dawson polyoxometalate (POM) containing a diphosphoryl group (P2 O6 X) of the general formula [P2 W17 O57 (P2 O6 X)]6- (X=O, NH, or CR1 R2 ). Modifying the bridging unit X was found to impact the redox potentials of the POM. The ease with which a range of α-functionalized diphosphonic acids (X=CR1 R2 ) can be prepared provides possibilities to access diverse functionalized hybrid POMs. Compared to existing phosphonate hybrid Wells-Dawson POMs, diphosphoryl-substituted POMs offer a wider tunable redox window and enhanced hydrolytic stability. This study provides a basis for the rational design and synthesis of next-generation hybrid Wells-Dawson POMs.

Carbazole-based bis-imidazole ligand-involved synthesis of inorganic–organic hybrid polyoxometalates as electrochemical sensors for detecting bromate and efficient catalysts for selective oxidation of thioether

Considering the potential application on preparing electrode and catalyst materials of inorganic–organic hybrid polyoxometalates, a bis-imidazole ligand with carbazole as a connector, 3,6-di(1H-imidazol-1-yl)-9H-carbazole (L), was used for preparing inorganic–organic hybrid polyoxometalates. As a result, three complexes formulated by [NiL₂(Mo₂O₇)] (1), [Cu(H₂O)₂(HL)₂ (β-Mo₈O₂₆)]·H₂O (2) and [Ni₂(H₂O)₄L₂ (CrMo₆(OH)₅O₁₉)]·6H₂O (3) were obtained successfully. Structural analysis indicated that the different polyoxoanions and metal ions showed important influences on the formation of structures. In the presence of Ni²⁺ ions and heptamolybdate, a 2D network constructed from Ni²⁺ ions and L ligands was formed in complex 1, in which the [Mo₄O₁₄]⁴⁻ polyoxoanions were encapsulated. But the use of Cu²⁺ ions led to a 1D chain of complex 2, which was composed of [β-Mo₈O₂₆]⁴⁻ polyoxoanions and mononuclear {CuL₂} units. By utilizing [CrMo₆(OH)₅O₁₉]⁴⁻ as the inorganic building block, complex 3 showed a 2D (4, 4)-connected layer. Complexes 1–3 could be employed as electrode materials for sensing bromate with the limits of detection of 0.315 μM for 1, 0.098 μM for 2 and 0.551 μM for 3. Moreover, these complexes showed efficient catalytic activity for the selective oxidation of thioethers.

Three inorganic–organic hybrid polyoxometalates were prepared using a bis-imidazole ligand featuring carbazole as a connector, exhibiting not only diverse structures, but also good electrochemical sensing activities for bromate, as well as efficient catalytic performances for oxidation of thioether.

Assembly of a Hexameric Cluster of Polyoxomolybdotriphosphonate Builts from [Zn(H2O){TeMo6O21}{N(CH2PO3)3}]6- Subunits and Its Optical and Catalytic Properties

The crown-shaped organotriphosphonate-modified 36-molybdenum cluster (NH₄)₁₈Na₇H₁₁[Zn(H₂O)TeMo₆O₂₁{N(CH₂PO₃)₃}]₆·23H₂O (1) has been synthesized, which is the largest zinc-containing organophosphonate-based polyoxometalate to date. Compound 1 was prepared in buffer solution (pH 5.5) with heptamolybdate and amino trimethylene phosphonic acid (ATMP) as the organic ligand. The polyanion constructed from a hexmeric assembly of [Zn(H₂O){TeMo₆O₂₁}{N(CH₂PO₃)₃}]^6- subunits has been fully investigated by a few characterization methods. In this work, we discovered that 1 exhibited reversible photochromism and it changed from white to reddish brown upon UV irradiation. In addition, compound 1, as a catalyst, can oxidize sulfides to sulfoxides, showing a high yield/conversion and a good selectivity.

A Novel Ruthenium-Decorating Polyoxomolybdate Cs₃Na₆H[MoVI14RuIV₂O50(OH)₂]·24H₂O: An Active Heterogeneous Oxidation Catalyst for Alcohols

The first example of wholly inorganic ruthenium-containing polyoxomolybdate Cs₃Na₆H[MoVI14RuIV₂O50(OH)₂]·24H₂O (1) was isolated and systematically characterized by element analysis, infrared spectroscopy (IR), thermogravimetric analyses (TGA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound 1 is composed of an unprecedented {Mo14}-type isopolymolybdate with a di-ruthenium core precisely encapsulated in its center, exhibiting a three-tiered ladder-like structure. The title compound can act as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst in the transformation of 1-phenylethanol to acetophenone. This catalyst is also capable of being recycled and reused for at least ten cycles with its activity being retained under the optimal conditions.
