Synthesis of Controlled-Size Silica Nanoparticles from Sodium Metasilicate and the Effect of the Addition of PEG in the Size Distribution

Silica nanoparticles-induced cytotoxicity and genotoxicity in A549 cell lines

Among the myriad of nanoparticles, silica nanoparticles (SiO2NPs) have gained significant attention since they are extensively produced and used across several kinds of industries. Because of its widespread usage, there has been increasing concern about the potential health effects. This study aims to evaluate the effects of SiO2NPs on Interleukin-6 (IL-6) gene expression in human lung epithelial cell lines (A549). In this study, A549 cells were exposed to SiO2NPs at concentrations of 0, 1, 10, 50, 100, and 200 µg/mL for 24 and 48 h. The IL-6 gene expression was assessed using Real-Time RT-PCR. Additionally, the impact of SiO2NPs on the viability of A549 cells was determined by MTT assay. Statistical analysis was performed using GraphPad Prism software 8.0. MTT assay results indicated a concentration-dependent impact on cell survival. After 24 h, survival decreased from 80 to 68% (1-100 µg/mL), rising to 77% at higher concentrations. After 48 h, survival dropped from 97 to 80%, decreasing to 90% at higher concentrations. RT-PCR showed a dose-response relationship in cellular toxicity up to 10 µg/mL. At higher concentrations, there was increased IL-6 gene expression, mitigating SiO2NP-induced cytotoxic effects. The study shows that the viability and proliferation of A549 cells are impacted by different SiO2NPs concentrations. There may be a potential correlation between IL-6 gene expression reduction and a mechanism linked to cellular toxicity. However, at higher concentrations, an unknown mechanism increases IL-6 gene expression, reducing SiO2NPs' cytotoxic effects. These effects are concentration-dependent and not influenced by exposure times. Further investigation is recommended to determine this mechanism's nature and implications, particularly in cancer research.

Fabrication and Analysis of Microcapsule Electrets with a Tunable Flexoelectric-like Response

The electret has drawn considerable attention as an emerging flexible energy collector. In this work, a charged microcapsule is designed which can provide a stable storage space for electric charge in the electret. The flexoelectric-like response is achieved by embedding a layer of charged microcapsules in the middle plane of the flexible polymer to form an electret. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy verified the successful preparation of microcapsules. Zeta potential analysis showed the negative electrical properties of the microcapsules. The prepared microcapsule electret has a significant flexoelectric effect under loading conditions. This work presents a preliminary theoretical study of the microcapsule electret to optimize the output characteristics of the electret by varying the parameters, including the number of microcapsules, the size of the electret, and the external load. Good agreement was achieved with the experimental results, which verified the validity of the theoretical study. This work provides a new method for preparing electret and further promotes its application in electromechanical transducers.

Gold Nanoparticles as Drug Carriers: The Role of Silica and PEG as Surface Coatings in Optimizing Drug Loading

The use of gold nanoparticles as drug delivery systems has received increasing attention due to their unique properties, such as their high stability and biocompatibility. However, gold nanoparticles have a high affinity for proteins, which can result in their rapid clearance from the body and limited drug loading capabilities. To address these limitations, we coated the gold nanoparticles with silica and PEG, which are known to improve the stability of nanoparticles. The synthesis of the nanoparticles was carried out using a reduction method. The nanoparticles' size, morphology, and drug loading capacity were also studied. The SEM images showed a spherical and homogeneous morphology; they also showed that the coatings increased the average size of the nanoparticles. The results of this study provide insight into the potential of gold nanoparticles coated with silica and PEG as drug delivery systems. We used ibuprofen as a model drug and found that the highest drug load occurred in PEG-coated nanoparticles and then in silica-coated nanoparticles, while the uncoated nanoparticles had a lower drug loading capacity. The coatings were found to significantly improve the stability and drug load properties of the nanoparticles, making them promising candidates for further development as targeted and controlled release drug delivery systems.

A green method for removing chromium (VI) from aqueous systems using novel silicon nanoparticles: Adsorption and interaction mechanisms

In the present study, we used the horsetail plant (Equisetum arvense) as a green source to synthesize silicon nanoparticles (GS-SiNPs), considering that it could be an effective adsorbent for removing chromium (Cr (VI)) from aqueous solutions. The characterization of GS-SiNPs was performed via Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photo electron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. The batch test results of Cr (VI) adsorption on GS-SiNPs showed a high adsorption capacity, reaching 87.9% of the amount added. The pseudo-second order kinetic model was able to comprehensively explain the adsorption kinetics and provided a maximum Cr (VI) adsorption capacity (Q_e) of 3.28 mg g^-1 (R² = 90.68), indicating fast initial adsorption by the diffusion process. The Langmuir isotherm model fitted the experimental data, and accurately simulated the adsorption of Cr (VI) on GS-SiNPs (R² = 97.79). FTIR and XPS spectroscopy gave further confirmation that the main mechanism was ion exchange with Cr and surface complexation through -OH and -COOH. Overall, the results of the research can be of relevance as regards a green and new alternative for the removal of Cr (VI) pollution from affected environments.

Modification of Poplar Wood via Polyethylene Glycol Impregnation Coupled with Compression

Wood permeability and compressibility are affected by cell wall structure and chemical composition. These properties can be improved by appropriate wood pretreatments. Low-density poplar wood was converted to a more dense structure by the following steps: First, lignin and hemicellulose were removed using a mixture of NaOH and Na2SO3. Second they were impregnated with polyethylene glycol (PEG, mean molecular weight of 1200), nano-SiO2, and a silane coupling agent at atmospheric temperature and pressure. Finally, impregnated wood was compressed at 150 °C. Results showed that the tracheid lumens on the transverse section of the compressed wood almost vanished. Specifically, the lumens in the wood cells, especially those that were compressed, were almost completely filled with PEG. In FTIR, the asymmetric absorption peaks of Si–O–Si at 1078–1076 cm−1 were clearly observed, which confirms the existence of bonding between nano-SiO2 and wood. The highest melting enthalpy and crystallization enthalpy showed a heat storage capacity of modified wood, which were 20.7 and 9.8 J/g, respectively. Such phase change capabilities may have potential applications in regulating the rate of change of room temperature. In summary, the modified wood could be utilized as material for construction to conserve energy.

Valorization of Rice Husk and Straw Agriculture Wastes of Eastern Saudi Arabia: Production of Bio-Based Silica, Lignocellulose, and Activated Carbon

Bio-based silica, lignocellulose, and activated carbon were simply produced via the recycling of Hassawi rice biomass waste of Al-Ahsa governorate in the eastern Saudi Arabia region using a fast chemical treatment procedure. Rice husk and rice straw wastes were collected, ground, and chemically treated with sodium hydroxide to extract silica/silicate from the dried plant tissues. The liquid extract is then treated with acid solutions in order to precipitate silica/silicate at neutral medium. Lowering the pH of the supernatant to 2 resulted in the precipitation of lignocellulose. Thermal treatment of the biomass residue under N2 gas stream resulted in activated carbon production. Separated products were dried/treated and characterized using several physical examination techniques, such as FT-IR, SEM/EDX, XRD, and Raman spectroscopy in order to study their structure and morphology. Silica and lignocelluloses products were then preliminarily used in the treatment of wastewaters and water-desalination processes.

Preparation and in-vitro evaluation of mesoporous biogenic silica nanoparticles obtained from rice and wheat husk as a biocompatible carrier for anti-cancer drug delivery

In this study, mesoporous silica nanocarriers were synthesized from natural sources such as rice and wheat husk for drug delivery application. First, the biogenic silica in cereals husk was extracted by acid leaching and then converted to sodium silicate as a silica precursor. Mesoporous silica nanoparticles were then synthesized by adding sodium silicate to the template mixture by continuous and discrete modes during the sol-gel process. The effects of natural sources type and precursor addition method on nanocarriers' morphological and physicochemical properties were investigated by XRD, FT-IR, BET and SEM analysis. Our results showed rice husk-based spherical nanocarriers were more crystalline with slit-shaped pores, while wheat husk-based nanocarriers had been composed of spherical nanoparticles with narrow cylindrical pores. The results also showed that by adding the precursor discretely, their hydrophilicity, particle size and pore size increased compared with the continuous mode, probably due to the high initial concentration of the precursor in the reaction mixture. Doxorubicin (Dox), as a model anticancer drug was loaded into the nanocarriers, and the drug release behavior was studied at two different pH values (7.4 and 5.4). In general, the accumulated released drug at pH 5.4 was approximately twice as much as pH 7.4 due to the higher solubility of doxorubicin at acidic environment. Also, the accumulated released drug at pH 5.4 for nanocarriers which had been synthesized by discrete mode, was higher than continuous mode, due to the larger pore diameter of them. The biocompatibility and cytotoxicity of nanocarriers and Dox-loaded nanocarriers were also investigated on the HFF-2 and MCF-7 cell lines, respectively. Moreover, apoptosis, as the mechanism of cell death, was evaluated by morphological study of the MCF-7 cells. Within acceptable toxicity limits and apoptosis induction, the Dox-loaded nanocarriers, especially discrete mode synthesized nanocarriers, exhibited high-efficiency anticancer effect on the MCF-7 cell line.

Experimental models of maternal-fetal interface and their potential use for nanotechnology applications

During pregnancy, the placenta regulates the transfer of oxygen, nutrients, and residual products between the maternal and fetal bloodstreams and is a key determinant of fetal exposure to xenobiotics from the mother. To study the disposition of substances through the placenta, various experimental models are used, especially the perfused placenta, placental villi explants, and cell lineage models. In this context, nanotechnology, an area of study that is on the rise, enables the creation of particles on nanometric scales capable of releasing drugs aimed at specific tissues. An important reason for furthering the studies on transplacental transfer is to explore the potential of nanoparticles (NPs), in new delivery strategies for drugs that are specifically aimed at the mother, the placenta, or the fetus and that involve less toxicity. Due to the fact that the placental barrier is essential for the interaction between the maternal and fetal organisms as well as the possibility of NPs being used in the treatment of various pathologies, the aim of this review is to present the main experimental models used in studying the maternal-fetal interaction and the action of NPs in the placental environment.
