Research Advances on the Bioactivity of 1,2,3-Triazolium Salts

1,2,3-Triazolium salts have demonstrated significant potential in the fields of medicine and agriculture, exhibiting exceptional antibacterial, antifungal, anticancer, and antileishmanial properties. Moreover, these salts can be utilized as additives or components to produce nano- and fiber-based materials with antibacterial properties. In this review, we summarize several synthetic strategies to obtain 1,2,3-triazolium salts and the structures of 1,2,3-triazolium derivatives with biological activities in the domains of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and functional materials. Additionally, the structure-activity relationship (SAR) of 1,2,3-triazolium salts with different biological activities has been analyzed. Finally, this review presents the potential applications and prospects of 1,2,3-triazolium salts in the fields of agriculture, medicine, and industrial synthesis.

Biopolymer Honeycomb Microstructures: A Review

In this review, we present a comprehensive summary of the formation of honeycomb microstructures and their applications, which include tissue engineering, antibacterial materials, replication processes or sensors. The history of the honeycomb pattern, the first experiments, which mostly involved the breath figure procedure and the improved phase separation, the most recent approach to honeycomb pattern formation, are described in detail. Subsequent surface modifications of the pattern, which involve physical and chemical modifications and further enhancement of the surface properties, are also introduced. Different aspects influencing the polymer formation, such as the substrate influence, a particular polymer or solvent, which may significantly contribute to pattern formation, and thus influence the target structural properties, are also discussed.

Antimicrobial Polymeric Structures Assembled on Surfaces

Pathogenic microbes are the main cause of various undesired infections in living organisms, including humans. Most of these infections are favored in hospital environments where humans are being treated with antibiotics and where some microbes succeed in developing resistance to such drugs. As a consequence, our society is currently researching for alternative, yet more efficient antimicrobial solutions. Certain natural and synthetic polymers are versatile materials that have already proved themselves to be highly suitable for the development of the next-generation of antimicrobial systems that can efficiently prevent and kill microbes in various environments. Here, we discuss the latest developments of polymeric structures, exhibiting (reinforced) antimicrobial attributes that can be assembled on surfaces and coatings either from synthetic polymers displaying antiadhesive and/or antimicrobial properties or from blends and nanocomposites based on such polymers.

Recent advances on porous interfaces for biomedical applications

Porous structures on solid surfaces prepared artificially through the water droplet template method have the features of easy operation, low cost and self-removal of templates, and thus are widely applied in the fields of medicine, biomedicine, adsorption, catalysis, and separation, optical and electronic materials. Due to their tunable dimensions, abundant selection of materials, mechanical stability, high porosity, and enlarged pore surface, the formed porous interfaces show specific significance in bio-related systems. In this study, recent achievements related to applications of porous interfaces and a focus into biological and medical-related systems are summarized. The discussion involves the preparation of porous interfaces, and porous interface-induced cell behaviors including culture, growth, proliferation, adhesion, and differentiation of cells. The inhibitory effect of bacteria and separated features of microorganisms supported by porous interfaces, the immobilization of biomolecules related to proteins, DNA and enzymes, and the controllable drug delivery are also discussed. The summary of recent advances pointed out in the study, are suggestive of insights for motivating unique potential applications including their extension to porous interfaces in biomedical materials.

How many ways a cell can move: the modes of self-propulsion of an active drop

Numerous physical models have been proposed to explain how cell motility emerges from internal activity, mostly focused on how crawling motion arises from internal processes. Here we offer a classification of self-propulsion mechanisms based on general physical principles, showing that crawling is not the only way for cells to move on a substrate. We consider a thin drop of active matter on a planar substrate and fully characterize its autonomous motion for all three possible sources of driving: (i) the stresses induced in the bulk by active components, which allow in particular tractionless motion, (ii) the self-propulsion of active components at the substrate, which gives rise to crawling motion, and (iii) a net capillary force, possibly self-generated, and coupled to internal activity. We determine travelling-wave solutions to the lubrication equations as a function of a dimensionless activity parameter for each mode of motion. Numerical simulations are used to characterize the drop motion over a wide range of activity magnitudes, and explicit analytical solutions in excellent agreement with the simulations are derived in the weak-activity regime.

Polymeric Materials: Surfaces, Interfaces and Bioapplications

This special issue “Polymeric Materials: Surfaces, Interfaces and Bioapplications” was proposed to cover all the aspects related to recent innovations on surfaces, interfaces and bioapplications of polymeric materials. The collected articles show the advances in polymeric materials, which have tremendous applications in agricultural films, food packaging, dental restoration, antimicrobial systems and tissue engineering. We hope that readers will be able to enjoy highly relevant topics that are related to polymers. Therefore, we hope to prove that plastics can be a solution and not a problem.

Exact results for sheared polar active suspensions with variable liquid crystalline order

We consider a confined sheared active polar liquid crystal with a uniform orientation and study the effect of variations in the magnitude of polarization. Restricting our analysis to one-dimensional geometries, we demonstrate that with asymmetric boundary conditions, this system is characterized, macroscopically, by a linear shear stress vs. shear strain relationship that does not pass through the origin: At a zero strain rate, the fluid sustains a non-zero stress. Analytic solutions for the polarization, density, and velocity fields are derived for asymptotically large or small systems and are shown by comparison with precise numerical solutions to be good approximations for finite-size systems.

Providing Antibacterial Activity to Poly(2-Hydroxy Ethyl Methacrylate) by Copolymerization with a Methacrylic Thiazolium Derivative

Antimicrobial polymers and coatings are potent types of materials for fighting microbial infections, and as such, they have attracted increased attention in many fields. Here, a series of antimicrobial copolymers were prepared by radical copolymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), which is widely employed in the manufacturing of biomedical devices, and the monomer 2-(4-methylthiazol-5-yl)ethyl methacrylate (MTA), which bears thiazole side groups susceptible to quaternization, to provide a positive charge. The copolymers were further quantitatively quaternized with either methyl or butyl iodide, as demonstrated by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). Then, the polycations were characterized by zeta potential measurements to evaluate their effective charge and by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) to evaluate their thermal properties. The ζ-potential study revealed that the quaternized copolymers with intermediate compositions present higher charges than the corresponding homopolymers. The cationic copolymers showed greater glass transition temperatures than poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA), with values higher than 100 °C, in particular those quaternized with methyl iodide. The TGA studies showed that the thermal stability of polycations varies with the composition, improving as the content of HEMA in the copolymer increases. Microbial assays targeting Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria confirmed that the incorporation of a low number of cationic units into PHEMA provides antimicrobial character with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 128 µg mL-1. Remarkably, copolymers with MTA molar fractions higher than 0.50 exhibited MIC values as low as 8 µg mL-1.

Ion Transport Properties and Ionicity of 1,3-Dimethyl-1,2,3-Triazolium Salts with Fluorinated Anions

1,2,3-Triazolium salts are an important class of materials with a plethora of sophisticated applications. A series of three novel 1,3-dimethyl-1,2,3-triazolium salts with fluorine, containing anions of various size, is synthesized by methylation of 1,2,3-triazole. Their ion conductivity is measured by impedance spectroscopy, and the corresponding ionicities are determined by diffusion coefficients obtained from ¹H and 19F pulsed field gradient nuclear magnetic resonance (PFG NMR) spectroscopy data, revealing that the anion strongly influences their ion conductive properties. Since the molar ion conductivities and ionicities of the 1,3-dimethyl-1,2,3-triazolium salts are enhanced in comparison to other 1,2,3-triazolium salts with longer alkyl substituents, they are promising candidates for applications as electrolytes in electrochemical devices.
