Mesoscale Anisotropy in Porous Media Made of Clay Minerals. A Numerical Study Constrained by Experimental Data

Structural Transformation between a Nematic Loose Packing and a Randomly Stacked Close Packing of Granular Disks

Packing structures of granular disks are reconstructed using magnetic resonance imaging techniques. As packing fraction increases, the packing structure transforms from a nematic loose packing to a dense packing with randomly oriented stacks. According to our model based on Edwards' volume ensemble, stack structures are statistically favored when the effective temperature decreases, which has a lower structural anisotropy than single disks, and brings down the global orientational order consequently. This mechanism identified in athermal granular materials can help us understand the nonergodic characteristics of disklike particle assemblies such as discotic mesogens and clays.

Structural Color Spectral Response of Dense Structures of Discoidal Particles Generated by Evaporative Assembly

Structural color─optical response due to light diffraction or scattering from submicrometer-scale structures─is a promising means for sustainable coloration. To expand the functionality of structural color, we introduce discoidal shape anisotropy into colloidal particles and characterize how structural color reflection can be engineered. Uniaxial compression of spheres is used to prepare discoids with varying shape anisotropy and particle size. Discoids are assembled into thin films by evaporation. We find that structural color of assembled films displays components due to diffuse backscattering and multilayer reflection. As discoids become more anisotropic, the assembled structure is more disordered. The multilayer reflection is suppressed─peak height becomes smaller and peak width broader; thus, the color is predominantly from diffuse backscattering. Finally, the discoid structural color can be tuned by varying particle size and has low dependence on viewing angle. We corroborate our results by comparing experimental microstructures and measured reflection spectra with Monte Carlo simulations and calculated spectra by finite-difference time-domain simulation. Our findings demonstrate that the two tunable geometries of discoids─size and aspect ratio─generate different effects on spectral response and therefore can function as independent design parameters that expand possibilities for producing noniridescent structural color.

Orientation measurements of clay minerals by polarized attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy

The orientation and organization of molecular guests within the interlayer of clay minerals control the reactivity and performance of tailored organo-clay materials. Such a detailed investigation of hybrid structure on the molecular scale is usually provided by computational methods with limited experimental validation. In this study, polarized attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy was used to extract quantitative orientation measurements of montmorillonite particles. The validity of the evanescent electric field amplitude calculations necessary to derive the order parameter was critically evaluated to propose a methodology for determining the orientation of the normal to the clay layer relative to a reference axis, enabling comparison with the results obtained from X-ray scattering experiments and molecular dynamic simulations. Subsequently, the orientation of the interlayer water dipole and surface hydroxyls with respect to the normal of the clay layer was experimentally determined, showing good agreement with molecular simulations. This methodology may provide quantitative insights into the molecular-level description of interfacial processes between organic molecules and clay minerals.

A general orientation distribution function for clay-rich media

The role of the preferential orientation of clay platelets on the properties of a wide range of natural and engineered clay-rich media is well established. However, a reference function for describing the orientation of clay platelets in these different materials is still lacking. Here, we conducted a systematic study on a large panel of laboratory-made samples, including different clay types or preparation methods. By analyzing the orientation distribution functions obtained by X-ray scattering, we identified a unique signature for the preferred orientation of clay platelets and determined an associated reference orientation function using the maximum-entropy method. This new orientation distribution function is validated for a large set of engineered clay materials and for representative natural clay-rich rocks. This reference function has many potential applications where consideration of preferred orientation is required, including better long-term prediction of water and solute transfer or improved designs for new generations of innovative materials.
