Creation of Superhydrophobic and Superhydrophilic Surfaces on ABS Employing a Nanosecond Laser

TiO2 ceramic membrane decorated with Fe3O4-Ag composite nanoparticles for produced water treatment

This study focused on the surface modification of commercial TiO₂ membranes with Fe₃O₄ decorated silver (Ag) nanoparticles (Fe₃O₄-Ag) via chemical attachment. Firstly, the Ag concentration on Fe₃O₄ was optimized, and different composites were prepared and characterized. Secondly, the optimal composite was used to prepare novel TiO₂/Fe₃O₄-Ag ceramic membranes via surface coating through tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) crosslinking. The membranes were characterized using SEM, EDX, FTIR, XRD, and contact angle. Biofouling resistance of the membranes was investigated using the Coomassie Blue dye method. The coated membranes were tested for water flux, chemical oxygen demand (COD) rejection, and biofouling resistance. Results showed that all coated membranes exhibited higher water flux. For example, the membrane with a 1.25 wt% Fe₃O₄-Ag coating showed the highest filtration flux of 1445 L/m²h (LMH) compared to the pristine membrane (379 LMH) without compromising the COD rejection. The resistance of the membrane to biofouling increased with the increase of Fe₃O₄-Ag nanoparticle concentration. The obtained results demonstrate the great potential of TiO₂/Fe₃O₄-Ag ceramic membranes for the treatment of produced water.

Hemostatic materials in wound care

Blood plays an essential role in the human body. Hemorrhage is a critical cause of both military and civilian casualties. The human body has its own hemostatic mechanism that involves complex processes and has limited capacity. However, in emergency situations such as battlefields and hospitals, when the hemostatic mechanism of the human body itself cannot stop bleeding effectively, hemostatic materials are needed for saving lives. In this review, the hemostatic mechanisms and performance of the most commonly used hemostatic materials, (including fibrin, collagen, zeolite, gelatin, alginate, chitosan, cellulose and cyanoacrylate) and the commercial wound dressings based on these materials, will be discussed. These materials may have limitations, such as poor tissue adhesion, risk of infection and exothermic reactions, that may lessen their hemostatic efficacy and cause secondary injuries. High-performance hemostatic materials, therefore, have been designed and developed to improve hemostatic efficiency in clinical use. In this review, hemostatic materials with advanced performances, such as antibacterial capacity, superhydrophobicity/superhydrophilicity, superelasticity, high porosity and/or biomimicry, will be introduced. Future prospects of hemostatic materials will also be discussed in this review.

Physical Properties of Fe3Si Films Coated through Facing Targets Sputtering after Microwave Plasma Treatment

Fe3Si films are deposited onto the Si(111) wafer using sputtering with parallel facing targets. Surface modification of the deposited Fe3Si film is conducted by using a microwave plasma treatment under an Ar atmosphere at different powers of 50, 100 and, 150 W. After the Ar plasma treatment, the crystallinity of the coated Fe3Si films is enhanced, in which the orientation peaks, including (220), (222), (400), and (422) of the Fe3Si are sharpened. The extinction rule suggests that the B2–Fe3Si crystallites are the film’s dominant composition. The stoichiometry of the Fe3Si surfaces is marginally changed after the treatment. An increase in microwave power damages the surface of the Fe3Si films, resulting in the generation of small pinholes. The roughness of the Fe3Si films after being treated at 150 W is insignificantly increased compared to the untreated films. The untreated Fe3Si films have a hydrophobic surface with an average contact angle of 101.70°. After treatment at 150 W, it turns into a hydrophilic surface with an average contact angle of 67.05° because of the reduction in the hydrophobic carbon group and the increase in the hydrophilic oxide group. The hardness of the untreated Fe3Si is ~9.39 GPa, which is kept at a similar level throughout each treatment power.

Innovative fouling-resistant materials for industrial heat exchangers: a review

Fouling of heat exchangers (HEs) has become a major concern across the industrial sector. Fouling is an omnipresent phenomenon but is particularly prevalent in the dairy, oil, and energy industries. Reduced energy performance that results from fouling represents significant operating loss in terms of both maintenance and impact on product quality and safety. In most industries, cleaning or replacing HEs are currently the only viable solutions for controlling fouling. This review examines the latest advances in the development of innovative materials and coatings for HEs that could mitigate the need for costly and frequent cleaning and potentially extend their operational life. To better understand the correlation between surface properties and fouling occurrence, we begin by providing an overview of the main mechanisms underlying fouling. We then present selected key strategies, which can differ considerably, for developing antifouling surfaces and conclude by discussing the current trends in the search for ideal materials for a range of applications. In our presentation of all these aspects, emphasis is given wherever possible to the potential transfer of these innovative surfaces from the laboratory to the three industries most concerned by HE fouling problems: food, petrochemicals, and energy production.

Do Microplastics Enter Our Food Chain Via Root Vegetables? A Raman Based Spectroscopic Study on Raphanus sativus

The outburst of plastic pollution in terrestrial ecosystems poses a potential threat to agriculture and food safety. Studies have already provided evidence for the uptake of plastic microparticles by several plant species, accompanied by numerous developmental effects, using fluorescence labelling techniques. Here, we introduce the implementation of confocal Raman spectroscopy, a label-free method, for the effective detection of microplastics (MPs) accumulation in the roots of a common edible root vegetable plant, Raphanus sativus, after treatment with acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) powder. We also demonstrate the concomitant occurrence of phenotypic defects in the polymer-treated plants. We anticipate that this work can provide new insights not only into the extent of the impact this widespread phenomenon has on crop plants but also on the methodological requirements to address it.

Study of Infrared Laser Parameters on Surface Morphology and Hydrophobic Properties

Many studies have shown that super hydrophobic surfaces have been applied to micro–nano structures and low surface energy materials. In the present study, infrared laser scanning and simple salinization modification were used to improve the hydrophobicity of a surface. When the scanning speed was 100 mm/s, the laser power was 30 W and the scanning interval was 200 μm, the apparent contact angle of surface was up to 157°. The assessment of surface characteristics revealed that decreasing scanning speed or increasing laser power were able to improve the hydrophobicity of the surface. After aging treatment, the superhydrophobic surface prepared by this method still had good durability.

This special issue “Polymeric Materials: Surfaces, Interfaces and Bioapplications” was proposed to cover all the aspects related to recent innovations on surfaces, interfaces and bioapplications of polymeric materials. The collected articles show the advances in polymeric materials, which have tremendous applications in agricultural films, food packaging, dental restoration, antimicrobial systems and tissue engineering. We hope that readers will be able to enjoy highly relevant topics that are related to polymers. Therefore, we hope to prove that plastics can be a solution and not a problem.
