Cesium adsorption from an aqueous medium for environmental remediation: A comprehensive analysis of adsorbents, sources, factors, models, challenges, and opportunities

Considering the widespread and indispensable nature of nuclear energy for future power generation, there is a concurrent increase in the discharge of radioactive Cs into water streams. Recent studies have demonstrated that adsorption is crucial in removing Cs from wastewater for environmental remediation. However, the existing literature lacks comprehensive studies on various adsorption methods, the capacities or efficiencies of adsorbents, influencing factors, isotherm and kinetic models of the Cs adsorption process. A bibliometric and comprehensive analysis was conducted using 1179 publications from the Web of Science Core Collection spanning from 2014 to 2023. It reviews and summarizes current publication trends, active countries, adsorption methods, adsorption capacities or efficiencies of adsorbents, tested water sources, influencing factors, isotherm, and kinetic models of Cs adsorption. The selection of suitable adsorbents and operating parameters is identified as a crucial factor. Over the past decade, due to their notable capacity for Cs adsorption, considerable research has focused on novel adsorbents, such as Prussian blue, graphene oxide, hydrogel, and nanoadsorbents (NA). However, there remains a need for further development of application-oriented laboratory-scale experiments. Future research directions should encompass exploring adsorption mechanisms, developing new adsorbents or their combinations, practical applications of lab-scale studies, and recycling radioactive Cs from wastewater. Drawing upon this literature review, we present the most recent research patterns concerning adsorbents to remove Cs, outline potential avenues for future research, and delineate the obstacles hindering effective adsorption. This comprehensive bibliometric review provides valuable insights into prevalent research focal points and emerging trends, serving as a helpful resource for researchers and policymakers seeking to understand the dynamics of adsorbents for Cs removal from water.

Adsorption of Phosphate and Ammonium on Waste Building Sludge

Two selected waste building sludges (WBS) were used in this study: (i) sludge from the production and processing of prestressed concrete pillars (B) and (ii) sludge from the production of technical stone (TS). The materials were used in their original and Fe-modified forms (B_Fe/TS_Fe) for the adsorption of NH₄⁺ and PO₄^3- from contaminated waters. The experiments were performed on a model solution simulating real wastewater with a concentration of 1.7 mmol·L^-1 (NH₄⁺) and 0.2 mmol·L^-1 (PO₄^3-). The adsorption of PO₄^3- had a high efficiency (>99%) on B, B_Fe and TS_Fe, while for TS, the adsorption of PO₄^3- was futile due to the high content of available P in the raw TS. The adsorption of NH₄⁺ on all sorbents (B/B_Fe, TS/TS_Fe) had a lower efficiency (<60%), while TS proved to be the most effective. Leaching tests were performed according to the CSN EN 12457 standard for B/B_Fe and TS/TS_Fe before and after NH₄⁺ and PO₄^3- sorption when the contents of these ions in the leachates were affected by adsorption experiments in the cases of B and TS. For B_Fe and TS_Fe, the ion content in the leachates before and after the adsorption experiments was similar.

Non-Destructive Testing of Materials in Civil Engineering

This issue was proposed and organized as a means to present recent developments in the field of non-destructive testing of materials in civil engineering. For this reason, the articles highlighted in this editorial relate to different aspects of non-destructive testing of different materials in civil engineering, from building materials to building structures. The current trend in the development of non-destructive testing of materials in civil engineering is mainly concerned with the detection of flaws and defects in concrete elements and structures, and acoustic methods predominate in this field. As in medicine, the trend is towards designing test equipment that allows one to obtain a picture of the inside of the tested element and materials. Interesting results with significance for building practices were obtained.
