Preparation and Characterization of a New Low Refractive Index Ferrofluid

The Synthesis Methodology of PEGylated Fe3O4@Ag Nanoparticles Supported by Their Physicochemical Evaluation

Many investigations are currently being performed to develop the effective synthesis methodology of magnetic nanoparticles with appropriately functionalized surfaces. Here, the novelty of the presented work involves the preparation of nano-sized PEGylated Fe3O4@Ag particles, i.e., the main purpose was the synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles with a functionalized surface. Firstly, Fe3O4 particles were prepared via the Massart process. Next, Ag+ reduction was conducted in the presence of Fe3O4 particles to form a nanosilver coating. The reaction was performed with arabic gum as a stabilizing agent. Sound energy-using sonication was applied to disintegrate the particles' agglomerates. Next, the PEGylation process aimed at the formation of a coating on the particles' surface using PEG (poly(ethylene glycol)) has been performed. It was proved that the arabic gum limited the agglomeration of nanoparticles, which was probably caused by the steric effect caused by the branched compounds from the stabilizer that adsorbed on the surface of nanoparticles. This effect was also enhanced by the electrostatic repulsions. The process of sonication caused the disintegration of aggregates. Formation of iron (II, III) oxide with a cubic structure was proved by diffraction peaks. Formation of a nanosilver coating on the Fe3O4 nanoparticles was confirmed by diffraction peaks with 2θ values 38.15° and 44.35°. PEG coating on the particles' surface was proven via FT-IR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) analysis. Obtained PEG-nanosilver-coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles may find applications as carriers for targeted drug delivery using an external magnetic field.

Polyethylene Glycol Coated Magnetic Nanoparticles: Hybrid Nanofluid Formulation, Properties and Drug Delivery Prospects

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are widely used materials for biomedical applications owing to their intriguing chemical, biological and magnetic properties. The evolution of MNP based biomedical applications (such as hyperthermia treatment and drug delivery) could be advanced using magnetic nanofluids (MNFs) designed with a biocompatible surface coating strategy. This study presents the first report on the drug loading/release capability of MNF formulated with methoxy polyethylene glycol (referred to as PEG) coated MNP in aqueous (phosphate buffer) fluid. We have selected MNPs (NiFe₂O4, CoFe₂O4 and Fe₃O₄) coated with PEG for MNF formulation and evaluated the loading/release efficacy of doxorubicin (DOX), an anticancer drug. We have presented in detail the drug loading capacity and the time-dependent cumulative drug release of DOX from PEG-coated MNPs based MNFs. Specifically, we have selected three different MNPs (NiFe₂O₄, CoFe₂O₄ and Fe₃O₄) coated with PEG for the MNFs and compared their variance in the loading/release efficacy of DOX, through experimental results fitting into mathematical models. DOX loading takes the order in the MNFs as CoFe₂O₄ > NiFe₂O₄ > Fe₃O₄. Various drug release models were suggested and evaluated for the individual MNP based NFs. While the non-Fickian diffusion (anomalous) model fits for DOX release from PEG coated CoFe₂O₄, PEG coated NiFe₂O₄ NF follows zero-order kinetics with a slow drug release rate of 1.33% of DOX per minute. On the other hand, PEG coated NiFe₂O₄ follows zero-order DOX release. Besides, several thermophysical properties and magnetic susceptibility of the MNFs of different concentrations have been studied by dispersing the MNPs (NiFe₂O₄, CoFe₂O₄ and Fe₃O₄) in the base fluid at 300 K under ultrasonication. This report on the DOX loading/release capability of MNF will set a new paradigm in view that MNF can resolve problems related to the self-heating of drug carriers during mild laser treatment with its thermal conducting properties.

Spatial self-phase modulation of a Gaussian beam transmitted through a ferrofluid

We report on the experimental observation of the diffraction pattern formed in the far-field region when a high-power continuous-wave laser convergent or divergent Gaussian beam passes through a cuvette with ferrofluid. Two different types of diffraction rings with opposite light-intensity distribution are shown in the far field. The difference between the diffractive patterns is attributed to the interaction of the strong spatial self-phase modulation caused by the refractive index change of the medium with wavefront curvature of the input Gaussian beam. The observed behavior of the diffraction pattern dynamics is interpreted theoretically based on the Fresnel-Kirchhoff integral. The negative polarity of nonlinear refraction can be identified by the central interference profiles and the diffraction pattern. At the same time, the self-defocusing phenomena of the ferrofluid can be determined by the type of pattern. The nonlinear refraction coefficients of the ferrofluid were estimated to be ∼-2.89×10^-5cm²/W (convergent Gaussian beam) and ∼-3.53×10^-5cm²/W (divergent Gaussian beam). In addition, the corresponding third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility of the sample was also estimated as ∼1.43×10^-5esu and ∼1.75×10^-5esu, respectively. The experimental results imply a novel potential application of ferrofluid in nonlinear phase modulation devices.
