Structural Flexibility in Activated Carbon Materials Prepared under Harsh Activation Conditions

MoS2 nanobelts-carbon hybrid material for supercapacitor applications

The MoS2 nanobelts/Carbon hybrid nanostructure was synthesized by the simple hydrothermal method. The MoS2 nanobelts were distributed in the interlayers of Lemon grass-derived carbon (LG-C), provides the active sites and avoid restacking of the sheets. The structural and morphological characterization of MoS2/LG-C and LG-C were performed by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The electrochemical measurements were studied with cyclic voltammetry, the galvanostatic charge-discharge method, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The specific capacitance of MoS2/LG-C and LG-C exhibits 77.5 F g-1 and 30.1 F g-1 at a current density of 0.5 A g-1. The MoS2/LG-C-based supercapacitor provided the maximum power density and energy density of 273.2 W kg-1 and 2.1 Wh kg-1, respectively. Furthermore, the cyclic stability of MoS2/LG-C was tested using charging-discharging up to 3,000 cycles, confirming only a 71.6% capacitance retention at a current density of 3 A g-1. The result showed that MoS2/LG-C is a superior low-cost electrode material that delivered a high electrochemical performance for the next generation of electrochemical energy storage.

Innovative metal oxides (CaO, SrO, MgO) impregnated waste-derived activated carbon for biohydrogen purification

In this work, a series of innovative metal oxide impregnated waste-derived activated carbons (MO/AC) was synthesized and used to purify the simulated biohydrogen based on the concept of CO₂ removal from the gas stream. Effects of metal oxide types (CaO, SrO and MgO) and contents of the best metal oxides on the morphology and the CO₂ adsorption capacity from the biohydrogen were investigated. It was found that both metal oxide types and contents played an important role on the adsorbent textural property and surface chemistry as well as the CO₂ adsorption capacity. Among all synthesized adsorbent, the MgO-impregnated AC with 12 wt.% MgO (12MgO/AC) exhibited the highest CO₂ adsorption capacity of around 94.02 mg/g. With this successive adsorbent, the biohydrogen with the H₂ purity higher than 90 mol% can be achieved from the gas stream with 50 mol% CO₂ for the first 2 min of adsorption period in a fixed bed reactor. The mechanism of CO₂ adsorption occurred via a combined process of the physisorption and chemisorption. Besides, the 12MgO/AC exhibited a high recyclability after several repetitive adsorption/desorption cycles.

Green and facile synthesis of nickel oxide-porous carbon composite as improved electrochemical electrodes for supercapacitor application from banana peel waste

Lithium-ion batteries and supercapacitors are examples of energy storage technologies that have a lot of promise in a variety of applications. Herein, NiO-porous carbon composites were prepared by a green and cost-effective facile synthesis route from banana peel waste materials. The surface morphology and chemical composition of the NiO-porous carbon composite were investigated using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive x-ray analysis (EDX). The prepared samples were also described through Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, x-ray powder diffraction (XRD), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and surface area measurements. The electrochemical behavior of prepared materials was studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge-discharge, and electrochemical impedance (EIS) to test their applicable suitability as supercapacitor electrode. PC-NiO (3) composite exhibits a remarkable specific capacitance of 811 F/g at a current density of 1 A/g. The specific capacitance of PC-NiO (3) is 5.3 times more than that of PC material at 1.0 A/g. Furthermore, the PC-NiO (3) composite material still exhibits a specific capacitance of 780 F/g at 5.0 A/g, high rate capability of 84.55% retention at a high current density of 10.0 A/g and superior cycle stability at 1000 cycles. Based on its high specific capacitance, the NiO-porous carbon nanocomposite is one of the most promising electrode materials for supercapacitors, according to the above results.

Acetaldehyde Adsorption Characteristics of Ag/ACF Composite Prepared by Liquid Phase Plasma Method

Ag particles were precipitated on an activated carbon fiber (ACF) surface using a liquid phase plasma (LPP) method to prepare a Ag/ACF composite. The efficiency was examined by applying it as an adsorbent in the acetaldehyde adsorption experiment. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry confirmed that Ag particles were distributed uniformly on an ACF surface. X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed that metallic silver (Ag0) and silver oxide (Ag2O) precipitated simultaneously on the ACF surface. Although the precipitated Ag particles blocked the pores of the ACF, the specific surface area of the Ag/ACF composite material decreased, but the adsorption capacity of acetaldehyde was improved. The AA adsorption of ACF and Ag/ACF composites performed in this study was suitable for the Dose-Response model.

Mesoporous Carbon from Optimized Date Stone Hydrochar by Catalytic Hydrothermal Carbonization Using Response Surface Methodology: Application to Dyes Adsorption

Providing efficient and environmental friendly ways to recover lignocellulosic waste remains a challenge around the world. In this study, citric acid-catalyzed hydrothermal carbonization (CHTC) was coupled with pyrolysis to convert date seed (Ds) into adsorbent material. In this regard, a central composite design (CCD) using response surface methodology (RSM) was developed to examine the influence of temperature, reaction time, and catalyst dose on the mass yield (Ym(%)) and carbon retention rate (CRR(%)) in the produced hydrochars. The optimized hydrochar (OHC-Ds) was obtained under optimal conditions (200°C, 120 min, 20 mg) and characterized by a Ym(%) and CRR(%) of 59.71% and 75.84%, respectively. Chemical activation by KOH of OHC-Ds followed by pyrolysis at 600°C resulted in an active material (AOHC-Ds) rich in carbon and characterized by a high specific surface area of 1251.5 m2/g, with the dominance of mesopores, as well as an amorphous structure comparable to graphite shown by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Adsorption experiments of two dyes on AOHC-Ds showed a high maximum adsorption capacity (Qm) of 657.89 mg g−1 for methylene blue (MB) and 384.61 mg g−1 for methyl orange (MO) compared to other conventional adsorbents. This result is due to the low acidity (pHpzc) of the surface of AOHC-Ds, which equals 6.75, and its surface, which is also rich in oxygenated functional groups such as (-OH), (C=O), and (C-O) shown by FTIR analysis. These results suggest that the coupling of CHTC and KOH activation followed by pyrolysis is an encouraging way to prepare an efficient and inexpensive adsorbent to remove dyes in wastewater.
